Norio MaedaNorio Maeda – Maestro Works ... CD
Columbia (Japan), 1970s/1980s/1990s. New Copy 2CD ... $36.99
Unusual later work from Norio Maeda – the Japanese jazz arranger who did some very groovy work in the 60s, then went on to handle a whole different array of sounds in the Japanese scene – a good deal of which are collected in this set! The double-length package features Maeda music from the 70s onwards, with a fair bit from recent decades that we didn't know about at all – and the package is divided up into creations in a few different categories – jazz, pops, and TV/Animation – with a surprising mix of sounds and styles that all show the maestro at his best! Norio's one of the more compelling talents of his generation in Japan – and the jazz material here is especially nice, and really shows that new flair for grooviness in larger ensemble that Maeda and his generation helped bring to the scene. All titles are in Japanese – or we'd tell you more – but the set features a total of 31 tracks in all, in a very handsome-looking package! (Jazz, Sound Library) CD
