The cover and the title are a great illustration of the growth of Bobby Womack on this classic 70s set – a mode of presentation that's maybe a bit more badass than before, without the down-home image of Bobby holding his guitar! Some aspects of the record are plenty darn righteous – and live up to the social commentary of the title – and these are mixed with Womack's rootsy vocals in a way that's really unique – almost as if a Marvin Gaye message album was crafted down in Memphis or Muscle Shoals. Some bits of the record are almost blackploitation funk in their use of wicked keyboards, sharp guitar, and larger charts – and the tunes blend together in this very cool way that really makes the whole set fit together nicely. A monster from start to finish – not only the greatest album from War, but maybe one of the greatest mainstream funk albums of all time! The set's got a really unique groove – one that so many others tried to copy, but which was forged here first – in a wicked LA blend of Chicano funk, heavy organ lines, and soulful singing that sews the whole thing together perfectly. One of the coolest collections of music we've ever heard from the legendary TK Records in Miami – a company that was a powerhouse of 70s hits and disco classics – but which also cut some wonderful underground soul at the time! Jackson 5, move over – because the folks at Numero Records have uncovered a whole host of rare kid soul acts from the 70s – most of them a fair bit funkier than their Motown contemporaries! The tracks here all clearly follow the lead started by Michael and his brothers at the end of the 60s – but the music is way more than just a simple copycat of Jackson modes – as each of these artists have a really individual approach, and a heck of a lot of personality in their music – despite their youthful years. If you never went to Skippy White's record store in Boston, you really missed a hell of a shop – a surprisingly great outlet for rare and underground soul, located way up in New England – and a place that was giving the world wonderful music over the course of many decades! Back in the early days of the store, Skippy really had his ear to the scene – and managed to capture all sorts of great artists who were working very underground on the Boston scene – mostly soul acts, but a bit of blues and gospel too – all featured here in the first-ever collection to look at White's work at this level. Another killer from Brass Construction – served up in that fantastic Randy Muller groove! The group's a bit one, but they've got a tightness that's really incredible – horns, bass, keys, and drums all focused together perfectly – hitting a pulsating rhythmic line that's perfect for the dancefloor, yet still funky enough to keep up with their roots. The vocals crackle nicely on the best cuts – sung together in an ensemble mode that's not really harmony, but has a fullness that supports the themes of the lyrics nicely. One of the greatest jazz vocal albums of all time – and one of the first true moments of genius from a young Dee Dee Bridgewater! The album's a Japanese only release (proof that they're always hipper to our jazz artists than we are!) – and it features Dee Dee singing material that's quite different than her later R&B-inflected sides from the late 70s – very soaring and spiritual work, delivered in a way that set a whole new standard for jazz at the time! Backing is by a small combo with brothers Ron and Cecil Bridgewater, plus Roland Hanna on acoustic and electric piano, George Mraz on bass, and Motohiko Hino on drums and percussion – but the star of the set is always Dee Dee, who sparkles beautifully on the album's classic versions of "Afro Blue" and "Little B's Poem" – both of which have been redone by many other singers over the years. Randy Crawford's working here with arrangements and production from Reggie Lucas – all very much in that sweet 80s style he was bringing to work with other artists at the time! There's plenty of beats, guitars, and keyboards in the instrumentation – pushing an overall sound that's more electric than some of Randy's jazzier sides from the early days. But Ms Crawford's vocals come out strongly on top of it all – with a poised presence that's clearly the main focus of the set. One of the best ever albums from maestro Will Downing – a smooth rolling, impeccably arranged gem of an album from the early 90s – with a timeless sound that's as fresh and breezy as ever! The production is immaculate, without losing any of the warmth and emotion – a clean approach that's really close to perfect when done by artists as capable as Downing. Will's vocal arrangements are front and center, with gorgeous female backing singers, keys, piano and synth, crisply popping bass, and horn accompaniment. Like so many other soul artists before them, these guys have voices that are steeped in the best traditions of gospel – but rather than giving up their roots and going secular, they just cut this set with the best Philly soul help of the time – arrangements from Wade Marcus, and a smoking Sigma Sound lineup that includes work from Norman Harris, Vince Montana, Bobby Eli, Ronnie Baker, and Earl Young – all of whom give the record the vibe of the best Philly International material from the time! Groovy Lena Horne from the 60s – an album that's a heck of a lot hipper and more swinging than most of her sets from a decade before! That unmistakable Horne style of singing is still very much in place here – but the backings are often tightly punctuated, with a gently soulful groove that definitely lives up to the title, and which serves up most of the tracks with a nice little sense of rhythm. Ray Ellis is working here with Lena on the backings – and his style is arguably a bit groovier than usual too, with more of the syncopations you might find in mid 60s Quincy Jones or Oliver Nelson. Big ol' bass from Marcus Miller – but also some sweet keyboards and great vocals too – all wrapped up in a set that's really got Miller at the height of his powers! Marcus wonderfully skirts the worlds of soul and fusion for the record – and mostly creates a tight groove on his own, even the vocals – but sometimes brings in key help from artists who include Mike Mainieri on vibes, David Sanborn on alto, and Ralph McDonald on percussion. A few other singers come into the mix to support Marcus' lead – including Luther Vandross and Yvonne Lewis – but he's got a warmth that grooves right alongside his instrumentation, even without any help.
