PreachermanUniversal Philosophy – Preacherman Plays TJ Hustler's Greatest Hits ... CD
Luaka Bop, 2018. New Copy ... $4.99 14.99
Wild work from one of the more compelling artists of the Cali soul scene – an Oakland singer/keyboardist who issued a rare album under the name of TJ Hustler in 1979, then kept on making his own sounds away from the mainstream! The vibe here is very very 80s underground – lots of Casio-styled keyboards, used with spare drum programs – and topped with lyrics that are quite far from any mainstream understanding of soul – clearly marking Preacherman as his own sort of singer right from the start. The collection is a perfect fit for the Luaka Bop style of finding truly unique artists and giving them the spotlight they deserve – and titles include "Feel It", "Out Of This World", "Tell Me Why", "That's Good", "Age Of Individualism", and the 18 minute long "Up & Down". CD also features the 15 minute "The Wrong Way". CD

Universal Robot BandDance & Shake Your Tambourine (Unidisc pressing) (with bonus track) ... CD
Red Greg/Unidisc, 1977. Used ... $6.99
Excellent work by the Universal Robot Band – an electronic ensemble put together by producer Greg Carmichael, and featuring that great funky moog sound that he and Patrick Adams were using heavily at the time! The tracks have a funky disco groove – similar to groups on P&P Records, but a bit more conventionally disco at points too – with elements that might have made these guys cross over to a slightly bigger audience in the 70s. The moog is plenty great throughout – going really wild a times, with that unbridled quality that really marks a P&P recording – and the beats often that that slightly funk, sweetly stepping Adams/Carmichael groove too! With all that great keyboard work, there's hardly a tambourine in sight – and titles include "Dance & Shake Your Tambourine", "You're My Music", "Space Disco", "Save Me", and "Sunshine". CD also features a radio mix of "Dance & Shake Your Tambourine". CD

Universal Togetherness BandUniversal Togetherness Band ... CD
Numero, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $7.99 15.98
A Chicago group who never hit the big time during their short run at the start of the 80s – but one who definitely know how to groove! There's a vibe here that really lives up to the "togetherness" in the group's name – a way of coming together with a tight, sharp sound throughout – but one that's never too slick, just surprisingly strong for such an underground funk group from the Windy City! And although the music is upbeat, the style is less disco than it is the kind of faster funk that percolated strongly in the underground scene in the pre-house years – almost more akin to some of the best indie club work coming out of the east coast, but with a very unique vibe too. As usual with Numero, the set does way more than just bring this lost music to light – it also tells the tale of the Universal Togetherness Band, and their never-flagging sense of energy and inspiration during their short but important run. Titles include "Ain't Gonna Cry", "Try Try Try", "My Sentiment", "Real Thrill", "Once In A Lifetime", "Call For Love", "I Want You", and "Taken By Love". CD

A fantastic 500th release by the BBE label – one that looks back at the past, and soars to the future! This special extended single package is a fantastic return to form for everyone involved – as underground club legends Patrick Adams and Leroy Burgess get a whole new groove from Louie Vega – but with a warmly soaring vibe that's a great update of their classic approach! "Barely Breaking Even" is a classic from the Universal Robot Band – but this new take has both vocals and production that are a lot warmer than the original P&P Records version – and a groove that's even catchier too! All four mixes are over eight minutes long – served up here beautifully on a double 12" package! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Woods EmpireUniversal Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Tabu (UK), 1981. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
80s grooving from Woods Empire – a short-lived group, but one with a great talent for balancing catchy lyrics and tight grooves with a slightly hipper sensibility! The group's a quintet with Tommy Woods in the lead, supported by his four sisters on vocals – almost a family-style approach, like Debarge, but groovier overall. The backing's very much in the Tabu/Solar mold, with nice jazzy touches from the session players like David T Walker, Paul Jackson Jr, Paulinho da Costa and Don Myrick. We're particularly fond of the smooth jazzed out "Universal Love", with a midtempo stepper's feel, and the set also includes "Sweet Delight", "In Your Ear With It", "Misty Eyes", "Destiny", "In The Night Air", "The Boogie's Gonna Get You", and "So Hot". 4 bonus tracks on this great CD version: ""The Boogie's Gonna Get You (extended version)", "The Boogie's Gonna Get You (edit)", "Sweet Delight (extended version)", "Come On Give Me Love" and "Love Makes The World Go Round". ✨✧ Dorothy AshbyRubaiyat Of Dorothy Ashby (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Cadet/Universal (Japan), 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
Incredible work from the amazing Dorothy Ashby – a brilliant set of funky and spiritual tunes, set to full backings from Chicago soul arranger Richard Evans! This album is easily one of Ashby's greatest, and it's dedicated to the writings of Omar Khayyam – one of the forces guiding Dorothy's more spiritual sound at the end of the 60s, clearly opened up in a way that's not unlike the direction of Alice Coltrane's work, but a lot more focused and a lot more funky! Ashby not only plays her usual jazz harp, but also koto as well, and even sings a bit too – and the larger group directed by Evans features work by Stu Katz on vibes and kalimba, Lenny Druss on flutes, and Cash McCall on guitar – all in a groove that's really a precursor to the Earth Wind & Fire generation of the Chicago scene! Titles include the amazing break "The Moving Finger" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Dust", "Joyful Grass & Grape", "Heaven & Hell", "Wax & Wane", "Shadow Shapes", "For Some When Young", "Myself When Young", and "Drink". Erykah BaduMama's Gun ... CD
Universal, 2000. Used ... $3.99
A millennial classic from Erykah Badu – a set that came along right as the current century was starting up, to show a soulful path that would keep things strong for many years to come! The album grabbed a bigger audience than Erykah's first, but still kept things strong – really focusing in on that amazing vocal style that made the singer such a unique talent – and which always had edges that were sharper, and runs that were deeper, than some of her contemporaries who might be able to trick a phrase with a bit of spirit, but never deliver the whole thing in the way that Badu can! Themes are both personal and hinting at her political turns to come – and titles include "Kiss Me On My Neck", "Didn't Cha Know", "My Life", "AD 2000", "Bag Lady", "In Love With You", and "Booty". The even more obscure second volume to the great soul/gospel classic Do Not Pass Me By – and like the first, the product of a wonderfully spiritual setting on Chicago's south side – music created in the church, but with all the same vibe as the hippest secular soul coming from the Windy City in the early 70s! The set does a great job of alternating strong lead singers with the rest of the group – a bit like Voices Of East Harlem, but with more of a larger ensemble feel – and there's some really wonderful moments on the record throughout – even a bit of funk amidst the more righteous soul-styled tunes. ✨✧ Beastie BoysIn Sound From Way Out! ... LP
Grand Royal/Universal, 1996/1998. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Beasties' peak-era, retro-style instrumentals LP! Even at their weakest vocal moments, we've always dug the Beastie Boys' firm commitment to funky instrumental backing – their albums are filled with lots of nice interludes, instrumentals, and backing grooves – but they often seemed to get buried amidst all the bugged out vocals. The record kind of has the vibe of a lost jazz organ session, with lots of weird twists and turns thrown in, and all the better thanks to Money Mark, pretty much a 4th Beastie here! A cool bit of instrumental funk with a very classic production feel. Every track's a winner, and the titles include "Ricky's Theme", "Groove Holmes", "Sabrosa", "In 3's", "Transitions", "Bobo On the Corner", and "Shambala". (Hip Hop, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

Booker T & PriscillaHome Grown (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
A&M/Universal (Japan), 1972. Used ... $19.99
Much mellower than the previous duet effort from Booker T & Priscilla Jones – a set that almost echoes Book's Memphis roots, but in ways that are different than the familiar soul of Stax! There's lots of sweet organ lines in the instrumentation – but they're played with a style that's often a bit rougher, almost more gospel-influenced than we're used to hearing from Booker – a beautiful mix for the spare vocal approach used on most of the record – a definite "home grown" sound that has Book and Priscilla singing in an intimate way that's really great. If you've ever doubted Booker's departure from The MGs, this record's well worth checking out – as he's definitely moved into a hip new space of his own – one that has some extremely haunting qualities at times. Titles include "Color Your Mama", "Save Us From Ourselves", "Maggies Farm", "Muddy Road", "The Sequence", and "Born Under a Bad Sign". CD

Booker T & Priscilla JonesChronicles (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
A&M/Universal (Japan), 1973. Used ... $19.99
Booker T's definitely into a great new groove here – one that really extrapolates his Memphis roots through the haze of early 70s California – coming up with some wonderful sounds along the way! There's a definite A&M vibe to the record – that mix of rootsy modes and hipster polish that A&M was really pioneering alongside the Warner camp – and most of the instrumentation here is pretty stripped-down and laid back – sometimes played all by Booker in overdubs, sometimes with added studio help. Organ lines figure strongly, but not always – and vocals are mostly duets between Booker and Priscilla – on titles that include "Rings Around The World", "When Two People Are In Love", "The Crippled Crow", "Time", "Wild Fox", "Fly", and "Mendocino". James BrownGet On Up – The James Brown Story ... CD
Polydor/Universal, Late 50s/1960s/1970s. Used ... $6.99
A set put together as the soundtrack for the James Brown bio-pic – but one that features mostly original recordings by The Godfather himself, and a few older cuts altered a bit for the film! The groove runs from early 60s soul to early 70s funk – and there's a fair bit of live tracks, which go well to display James at his vibrant concert best. About a quarter of the material seems to be vintage recordings, augmented with some new performances or vocals to fit the scenes in the film – but these fit well alongside the classics, to a point where there's hardly much discernable difference (as well as little in the notes to explain them as well.) Tracks include "Sex Machine", "Mother Popcorn (part 1)", "It's A Man's Man's Man's World (live)", "I Got The Feelin (live)", "Soul Power (live)", "Try Me (live)", "Please Please Please", "Get Up Offa That Thing", "I Can't Stand Myself (live)", and "I Got You". James Brown, proud and loud – a smoking 60s album that provides a great link between his earlier styles and his freer roots – with a brilliant blend of funk, soul, and a touch of raw R&B! Given the power of The Godfather at this point, there's no denying that even the older cuts have a punch that few others could match – making for a record that feels mighty darn unified, despite the stretch of time between a few of the recordings. Titles include the funky gems "Ain't That a Groove (pts 1 & 2)", "The Scratch", "Is It Yes or Is It No", and James' great version of "The Bells" that's always been one of our favorites – plus Just You & Me", "I Love You Yes I Do", "Come Over Here", and "I Don't Mind". Further genius from James Brown at the start of the 70s – a record that's starting to show some of the more open-ended grooves he'd explore with the JBs on their own albums – longer, stretched-out tracks that are way more than simple funk and soul! There's a sense of freewheeling energy here that's totally great – dynamic, powerful calls from James at the top of most tunes – and incredibly sharp work on horns and rhythm from the band – cutting grooves and turning lines like no other combo in the business, all with a great mix of deep soul and hard funk! The album features the 7 minute killer version of "Let a Man Come In & Do The Popcorn", plus "World (parts 1 & 2)", "It's A New Day (parts 1 & 2)", "Give It Up or Turn It Loose", "If I Ruled The World", "The Man In The Glass (part 1)", and "I'm Not Demanding (part 1)". Motown legends finally get their due – in this first-ever collection of work by The Funk Brothers! The group were the backing band for most of the classic Motown recordings of the 60s – and labored for years with hardly any credit, until recently, when their achievements have been brought to light by the film Standing In The Shadows Of Motown, and a much-deserved Grammy award! The start of the legendary second chapter for the Gap Band – the point when the group had reemerged as the tight funky trio of the Wilson Brothers, with a groove that would really set them up nicely for the 80s! This first album in the new format has a wonderfully tight feel – still plenty of sharp edges that echo their earlier groove, but a leaner quality too – one that's got the bass and drums snapping together wonderfully, really setting the tone for the heaviest grooves. There's also a few mellower cuts too – which really sound great, and give the record the same sort of balance you might hear on work by Heaven & Earth at the time. Pride/Universal (Japan), Early 70s. Used ... $12.99
A landmark album that is perhaps the single most influential beat source in hip hop! The record was the brainchild of bongo player Michael Viner – who also happened to be running the Pride subsidiary of MGM at the time. Viner's got a meeeeeean touch on the bongo, hitting it hard and funky like the best 70s conga players – and his approach to the instrument is kind of like a funky update of popular instrumental styles laid down on guitar by The Ventures or on moog by Hot Butter. This album features the classics "Apache" and "Bongo Rock" – both with monster funky breakdowns that showed up on a heck of a lot of hip hop records over the years – plus loads of other goodies like "Last Bongo In Belgium" and "Bongolia". Excellent stuff – and darn hard to find! (We can still remember how stunned we were when we found our first copy in a Canadian record store back in 1987 – and even then we had to pay plenty!) Sweet 80s sounds from the legendary Kool & The Gang – one of the key classics from the second chapter of the group – when their lineup and sound were a lot leaner than before, and they managed to cross over big to a much wider audience than before! The upbeat cuts show that the group were still kings of the funky dancefloor – and the mellower ones are equally great too – showing a rising ballad style that proved to be the group's big crossover card at the time – a way of putting over a laidback track, but with plenty of soul. Universal, Early 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A fantastic selection of work from one of the hippest girl groups of the 70s – the mighty Love Unlimited trio, three singers who all worked under the genius of Barry White in his prime! Unlike other girl trios of the time, who often used an older soul mode refitted with disco grooves – sometimes acting more like a chorus than a lead act – Love Unlimited always brought their full vocal strengths to play, and do a fantastic job here working in modes that rival some of the best male harmony groups of the early 70s – especially the sweet soul groups from New Jersey, New York, and Philly. And yes, Barry does kick up the groove a bit at times, but even then things are usually more in a midtempo mode, not a disco one – which makes for tremendous sounds throughout. This is the first-ever proper collection of the girls' singles from the early 70s – and titles include "Oh Love Well We Finally Made It", "Fragile Handle With Care", "Are You Sure", "I Should Have Known", "Is It Really True Boy Is It Me", "Walkin In The Rain With The One I Love", "Under The Influence Of Love", "It May Be Winter Outside", "I Love You So Never Gonna Let You Go", "I Belong To You", "So Nice To Hear", "People Of Tomorrow Are The Children Of Today", and "Share A Little Love In Your Heart". ✨✧ Jackie MittooJackie Mittoo – The Keyboard King At Studio One ... LP
Universal Sound/Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Killer funky organ – and 100% Dynamite! Jackie Mittoo is one of the all-time great organists – as essential to Jamaica as Booker T was to Memphis, or Jimmy McGriff was to New York. He's legendary these days as the player who completely transformed the Hammond sound with his unique Jamaican instrumental style during his early years with the Skatalites, and on his later solo recordings for Studio One. This set's probably the first time Mittoo's work has been properly packaged and remastered – and the folks at Soul Jazz have done an amazing job of selecting just the right tracks for such a project. The whole thing wails along with a stone rocksteady groove – with plenty of nice drum parts and funky rhythm bits underneath Jackie's soulful organ. If you dug the label's 100% Dynamite series, you'll really dig this one – and the whole thing's very much in the same vein. Tracks include "Drum Song", "Reggae Rock", "Hot Tamale", "Killer Diller", "Black Organ", "Stereo Freeze", "Wall Street", "Darker Shade Of Black", "Juice Box", and "Killer Diller". ✨✧ ParliamentChocolate City (picture disc pressing) ... LP
Casablanca/Universal, 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An amazing album that's probably one of the most unified albums that George Clinton ever recorded! The band's rawer style has been firmed up and economized – but a lot of the best elements are still in place, including a strange approach to vocals that has male and female voices interacting and counterbalancing in a similar style to that heard on some of Roy Ayers' best work from the early 70s. Clinton's begun introducing a lot of elements of Funkadelic into the group – but the tracks are still short and very tight, with a focused approach to both funk and lyrics that really makes the album stand up to repeated listenings over the years. The album begins with the sublime "Chocolate City", a surprisingly political number that has these incredible jagged piano lines that echo away madly – then it rolls into other great numbers like "Side Effects", "What Comes Funky", "If It Don't Fit, Don't Force It", and "I Misjudged You". Smokey RobinsonWhere There's Smoke ... CD
Motown/Universal, 1979. Used ... $18.99
Smooth Smokey at the end of the 70s – an album that has him moving from the Quiet Storm sound into the more hook-based style that would earn him a fair bit of hits in the 80s! The Robinson vocal approach is always sweet, warm, and mellow on the set – especially on the album's more laidback numbers, which still have a bit of that groove that made Smokey's other 70s work so great – and which helps him retain a bit more of an organic soul sound on the album. And honestly, given the studio traps that a singer his age could fall into, it's pretty amazing how well Smokey's vocals do come through in the set – with a breathy intensity that takes us back to key moments in early years, and which really avoids the schlock of later records! Titles include "The Hurt's On You", "Ever Had A Dream", "I Love The Nearness Of You", "Cruisin", "Shake It", and "Get Ready", CD

✨✧ Rotary ConnectionBlack Gold Of The Sun – The Very Best Of Rotary Connection ... CD
Cadet/Universal (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Some of the trippiest soul music ever recorded – an amazing collection of work by the legendary Rotary Connection – early home to vocalist Minnie Riperton and arranger Charles Stepney! Rotary Connection was a unique late 60s combination of soul, jazz, and rock-based modes – all inflected by more baroque production styles coming down in the Chicago scene of the time – balanced perfectly by the genius of Stepney – who often drew inspiration from avant classical work to round out his sound! Stepney gave the group a heady heady sound that went far beyond the airy vocal sound of Minnie Riperton or the rougher edge of Sidney Barnes – and the mix of unusual instrumentation, odd recording techniques, and strange timings made the group's music years ahead of its time – at a level that's really only fully appreciated these many years later. This 2CD set goes way beyond previous collections of Rotary Connection work, because it shows a real appreciation for the more adventurous sounds of Stepney in the studio – and brings together the trippiest, most freewheeling cuts from the group's 4 albums for Chess/Cadet – as well as a number of key tunes that have been heavily sampled over the years. 33 tracks in all – including "The Salt Of The Earth", "Rapid Transit", "Magical World", "I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun", "A-Muse", "Sursum Mentes", "Memory Band", "Hey Love", "The Sea & She", "Song For Everyman", "Love Is", "We're Going Wrong", "Life Could", "Teach Me How To Fly", "VIP", "Let Them Talk", "Love Has Fallen On Me", "Respect", "Pink Noise", "Want You To Know", and "This Town". A massive legacy in soul music – served up here in one great little set – with the first five albums by Soul II Soul, all presented in tiny little LP-styled sleeves! It's hard to deny the power of the group at the time – and even all these many years later, we're amazed at how well these albums hold up – as the first two here had such a huge influence on American soul music, you might expect the sound to be old hat by now! Yet Jazzie B was still one of the first guys to successfully mix hip hop rhythms and modern soul production – at a level that was far less forced than American experiments of the mid 80s – and which found a way to carry all the hip underground love of soul and jazz from the British scene over to the American mainstream. Even the later albums here are still head and shoulders above most of their contemporaries – and beyond the classics, the whole package here is ripe for rediscovery! CD

One of the coolest, grooviest albums of Latin Soul you could ever hope to find – one of the few records ever from the great Ray Terrace – and a set that goes even beyond some of the similar sides on Tico or Fania at the time! Ray's groove here is totally wonderful – upbeat, joyous, and blending soul and jazz in equal parts – often with English language lyrics that have the best sort of Spanish Harlem sound. Many tunes are covers, but they're completely remade by the record – with lively arrangements from Marty Sheller that never let up, and smoking soul lead vocals by Willie Torres. The whole thing swings, and there's never a dull minute – on titles that include "Get On Up", "You've Been Talking 'Bout Me Baby", "Half Way Down", "Listen To Me", and the great "I Make A Fool Of Myself". The first LP from Tony Toni Tone – and a landmark in crossover R&B! The set is a great one throughout – tightly produced, but with a sense of charm that seemed to be missing at the time from other groups – especially male groups who got a bit blown off course during the quiet storm years. The youthful trio bring a new sort of energy back to male group soul – a sound that's not yet as heavy on the harmonies as it would be in later years, but which still gets things nicely back to basics. Titles include the huge single "Little Walter" – a true benchmark for the Rahael Saadiq empire – plus the tracks "Baby Doll", "For The Love Of You", "Pain", "Love Struck", "Who's Lovin You", and "Not Gonna Cry For You". 20th Century/Universal, 1970s. Used 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Barry White was one of the undisputed geniuses of 70s soul – a completely new force that helped the music find even more soul and sophistication than ever before – all while still sounding plenty funky too! And while Barry's albums of the decade were mega-hits – as were his productions with Love Unlimited and the Love Unlimited Orchestra – the man also had a great way with a 7" single – and somehow managed to pack all the punch and power of a full soul orchestra performance into the space of a few short minutes – all while topping the tunes with his own majestic vocals! Barry also completely redefined masculinity at the time – adding in this positive, prosperous, all-encompassing mode to his music – often at a level that was a far cry from soul modes of the 60s, and which paved the way for so many transformations to come. Here, you'll get a heady helping of his great singles of the 70s – some of which you'll know as classics, others which come as a nice surprise – all working together in one massively mighty collection. Titles include "Never Never Gonna Give You Up", "Playing Your Game Baby", "I'm Qualified To Satisfy You", "I'll Do Anything You want Me To", "You're The First The Last My Everything", "Honey Please Can't Ya See", "What Am I Gonna Do With You", "Baby We Better Try To Get It Together", "Your Sweetness Is My Weakness", "I Love The Songs I Sing", "September When I First Met You", "It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down To Me", "Don't Make Me Wait To Long", "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby", and "I've Got So Much To Give". 3CD set features a massive 46 tracks in all, with a big booklet of notes – all the singles Barry released with 20th Century Records in the 70s, including b-sides – some of which are instrumentals or long versions! Universal, 2011. Used ... Out Of Stock
A (sadly) posthumous release from Amy Winehouse – a voice we loved for a couple good years before knowing how troubled she was in real life and now lament the loss of – and this set, largely put together by producer Salaam Remi turned out surprisingly well! It'd be pretty easy to bow to cynicism, but for our money, there's more than enough strong stuff here. It features production by Remi, plus Mark Ronson on a couple tracks, and it's a mix of styles that ably demonstrate Amy's depth as an interpreter. There's some great, kinda late night jazzy soul numbers, classic level 60s R&B and thoroughly modern hip hop soul – all with strong vocal performances from Amy. Includes "Our Day Will Come", "Between The Cheats", "Tears Dry (Original Version)", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow (2011)", "Like Smoke" feat Nas (and some eerily timely lyricism, as of this album's release date), "Valerie ('68 Version)", "Half Time", "The Girl From Ipanema", "Half Time", "Body & Soul" with Tony Bennett, "A Song For You" and more. An excellent album by one of the greatest Brazilian funk bands ever – a wonderful blend of funk, jazz, and soul – and a set that rivals any of the best work coming from the US at the time! These guys are right on the money right from the start – moving through sharp changes with effortless ease, yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial – kind of like that perfect balance that Kool & The Gang hit for just a few records in the mid 70s – but with more of a Brazilian feel overall. Jazzy licks abound – and the keyboards, guitar, and horns are just great – but the set's also got some more regional percussion, too – which really rounds out the record wonderfully. The grooves all have a really universal appeal – essential for any fan of funky sounds – and titles include "Mr Funky Samba", "Junia", "Casa Forte", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Lelbon Via Vaz Lobo", "Baia", "Maria Fumaca", and "Metalurgia". A long-overdue look at the amazing Clark Sisters – a fantastic gospel group, and one with a vocal depth that we'd put right up there next to any of our favorite soul acts of the time! The Clarks are maybe best known for their landmark track "You Brought The Sunshine" – a completely righteous blend of gospel, soul, and disco that crossed over very big back in the day – but the group have an endless amount of great music to offer, a great deal of which is brought together in this wonderful set! The sisters always kept a strong ear towards the secular soul styles of their day – but they also always pushed things with the sort of amazing vocal interplay that used to only be the territory of male gospel groups in earlier decades – fantastic harmonies, soaring leads, and really great group formation. And if you're not a completely huge fan of gospel, don't worry – because the message here is often a more general one of positivity, which really lifts up the spirit of the tunes in a universal way. There are occasional elements that you might recognize from bigger crossover world acts – such as the South African artists who were getting play on US radio – but the overall sound is more soul than anything else, on titles that include "Let's Make A Deal", "It's Our Home", "Don't Treat Me So Bad", "Play Boy", and "Kunzima". Harvey MasonMVP – Most Valuable Player (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Arista/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1981. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
Harvey's fifth and final album for Arista – another win for the funk-soul-fusion MVP! Given that Harvey worked on some of the best fusion sessions of the 70s, it's more than safe to give him "most valuable player" award – because without his drums, many a record would have faltered! Here, though, Mason's much more in his all-out soul mode – singing, playing, and producing in a smooth blend of jazz and modern soul, still with some funky grit in the mix. It not only benefits greatly from his years as one of the great studio players, but even more so for his triple threat talent as a writer, producer and performer. Tracks are all quite tight and catchy – soul groovers with some funk. Feature arrangements from Kenny Mason, Patrice Rushen and Jerry Peters. Titles include "Universal Rhyme", "Don't Doubt My Lovin", "On and On", "You And Me", "Spell", and "How Does It Feel". This expanded edition from Soulmusic.com includes 2 bonus tracks: "How Does It Feel (UK Single)" and "On And On (UK Single)". CD

✨✧ New World GenerationNew World Generation ... CD
Now Again, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Genius work from a little-known group – but a great one too! New World Generation were an early 80s combo from the Boston scene – but they've got a groove that's very much in keeping with some of the most righteous funk acts of the late 70s – particularly those that brought a nice degree of spiritualism to their music, like James Mason or RAMP! This sweet little set carries some great echoes of that generation – a warmer, jazzier style that most other early 80s soul music you'd hear from elsewhere – and a richly-conceived vision that has New World Generation sounding way different than your usual funk, club, or boogie act of the time. Plus, the package is really fleshed out with additional sounds from related groups Universal Rhythms and Orision – tracks that, like the New World Generation numbers, weren't really issued at the time – but which represent a very hip side to underground soul in the US – one that's often eclipsed by bigger acts going for easy chart fame. Now Again have really outdone themselves with the package – bringing together rare tracks from almost-gone tape sources, and putting together a set of notes that really helps illuminate this amazing batch of music! Titles include "Sunshine", "Curious Soul", "Dreamland", "One Of A Kind", "I'm Feelin' Fine", "Mystical Planet", "New World Generation", "Worry", "Free Your Mind", "How Do You Feel", "Listen From Your Soul", "Loving You", and "Someday The World Will Be As One". ✨✧ Michael Orr & The Book Of LifeLove Will Rise ... LP
Birthright/High Jazz (Switzerland), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Stunning sounds from Michael Orr – a singer you might know from his secular work in the duo of Harris & Orr – and who still sounds incredible here in a more spiritual-styled set from the start of the 80s! As with Michael's earlier music, there's a cool, cosmic vibe going on in the instrumentation – jazzy keyboard inflections and a great spacey soul conception that's quite unusual for most records of this vintage, much less the gospel setting that Orr's working in here on the Birthright label! Yet as with the hippest gospel records of the time, the religion is delivered more in a sense of universal spirit – at a level that's more on par with some of the more spiritual jazz and soul releases of the time – a mode that Orr worked in before on his previous albums. Michael plays a fair bit of Fender Rhodes on the record, and sings deeply too – and the vibe here is a lot like the best modern soul moments from Rance Allen and DJ Rogers. Titles include "Love Will Rise", "Hear The Message", "This Is A Blessing", "Spread Love", "Come Live In My Heart", and "I Don't Know You". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1979. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful album from Pleasure – a group who were already great before, but who really seem to hit a great new level with this late 70s classic! Pleasure started out as a sweet jazz/funk combo with a great edge to their music – but by the time of this set, they'd actually gotten even tighter and better – but all without losing their depth at all! Most of the group's contemporaries just got slick and commercial – but instead, Pleasure found a way to hone their skills wonderfully – and take on some new spacey and electric touches in the process – definitely pointing towards the funky future promised in the title. The set's filled with some of the funkiest and most soulful moments of the group's career – including "Space is the Place", which has great funky drums on the intro; the mellow "Thoughts of Old Flames", a real stunner with a great moody feel; and the classic "Glide", a great dancefloor groover that still stands up well. Other tracks are all great too – and include "Universal", "Strong Love", "Nothin To It", and "Dedication To The Past". CD

A sweet little funk record from the early 80s – recorded in the Virginia scene south of DC, and with a vibe that's totally wonderful all the way through! These guys are still a lot more live than most funk groups of the time – no beats or programmed bits here – and the group plays with a rich blend of elements that reminds us of Earth Wind & Fire at their mid 70s best – able to groove tightly one minute, then lay back into some cool compressed bits the next – all with a sharpness that would have made these guys huge, had they ever had the chance! Vocals are by differing members of the group, who can also sing together on a razor's edge with the rhythms – and the basslines, riffing guitar, and keyboards are peppered with some mighty nice horns as well. Titles include "Take A Chance", "Universal Funk Affair", "Star From The Sky", "Take Some Time", "Crazy Feelin", "Desire", and "Searchin". CD

PMG (Germany), 1978. New Copy ... $6.99 16.99
A real killer from the Atlanta soul scene of the 70s – a set that's even more underground than some of the underground classics we've come to love over the years – and one that's got some mighty top-shelf talent in the mix! Lead singer Stevo is only part of the package here – as the group features work from and songs by funky 45 legend Calvin Arnold, and indie club genius Tommy Stewart – both of whom have given us some wonderful records over the years! The vibe is maybe most like Tommy Stewart's excellent music – especially his self-titled classic album – a mode that's funky club, but never straight disco at all – thanks to lots of hip touches in the instrumentation and overall song construction, which really seems to respect the funky talents of the musicians. A killer funk set throughout – and titles include "Pay The Price", "Universal Love", "Messing Up A Good Thing", "Jammin", "Livin For The City", "Save The World", and "Party Night". CD

✨✧ Dwight ThompsonHypocrisy ... LP
Poker/Regrooved (Netherlands), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A Dutch funk set from the 70s, but one that stands nicely next to American work of the time – thanks to English language vocals from Dwight Thompson, and a really universal sense of a groove! The instrumentation is by a tight combo with a bit of a jazzy flourish – almost pointing the way towards the groove of 80s soul and club, but with lots of the tight riffing you might get from Average White Band at their best! The production is cool, too – different than American soul, with lots of nice compression around the edges – which helps the set stand out with a unique vibe, on titles that include "You Don't Know Me", "My Woman Is Calling", "The Lover", "Man Oh Man", "Getting Old", "Love", "She Loves Me", "What's The Meaning", and "Hypocrisy". An electronic pop masterpiece – and the first moment of international exposure for the mighty Yellow Magic Orchestra! Before this set, the trio of Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono, and Yukihiro Takahashi had already been making plenty of waves on the Japanese music scene – but the record gave them a focused showcase they never had before, and helped set the stage for so much other electronic music in years to come! The tracks are tuneful, but also created from lots of different electronic elements – video game noise, analogue electronics, drum machines, keyboards, and more – mostly wonderfully tuneful instrumentals, which gave the work a very universal appeal. Titles include "Computer Game (Theme From The Circus)", "Computer Game (Theme From The Invader)", "Yellow Magic (Tong Poo)", "Cosmic Surfin", "Firecracker", "Simoon", "La Femme Chinoise", "Bridge Over Troubled Music", and "Mad Pierrot". Numero/J&D, 1970s. New Copy ... $7.99
A set that definitely lives up to its title – as it's kind of an extra dose of soulful tracks from the vaults of the many reissue projects handled by the Numero Group over the years! The collection brings together upbeat soul groovers, warm modern soul gems, and a few funkier cuts – in a mix that really rewrites any understanding that you might have of uptempo soul in the 70s – underground grooves that are quite far from the slicker disco of the charts, and which together make for a set that could easily pack the dancefloor! Titles include "Deep In Your Heart" by Young Divines, "I Love You" by Karriem, "Main Squeeze" by Nate Evans, "Love Explosion" by Donnell Pittman, "Love Is On The Way" by Bill Spoon, "Try My Love Again" by Syl Johnson, "Lift This Hurt" by Elvin Spencer, "We're Two Fools In Love" by Dyson's Faces, "No Matter" by La'Fez, "Guilty" by Jackie Stoudemire, "I Think It's Time" by Alice Swoboda, "I'll Never Say No" by The Summits, "Cosmos Third Eye" by Cosmos Universal Band, and "Standing By Love" by Eula Cooper. Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
An excellent collection of rare soul groovers – one of those UK packages that are put together as a memory of their own great Northern Soul scene, but which has equal appeal to any fan of rare and unusual American soul! The set list is great – and there's maybe a nicely wider range of styles here than on the kind of Northern Soul sets that follow in a stricter Detroit-inspired style – as there's echoes of funk, some key 70s numbers, and even a few British tracks that sit wonderfully next to the US songs. The set's divided up into two modes – CD1 features 28 60s Northern Soul tracks, and CD2 features 21 numbers from the 70s – titles that include "Bok To Bach" by Father's Angels, "You Baby" by Jackie Trent, "Pick Up My Toys & Go Home" by The Devonnes, "Baby You've Got Me" by The Sapphires, "When Love Slips Away" by Margo & The Marvettes, "That's What Mama Say" by Leonard Whiting, "Check It Baby" by Willie & The Mighty Magnificents, "Stop What You're Doing" by The Playthings, "Ain't No Soul Left In These Ol Shoes" by Kenny Bernard, "Ain't Nothin But A Houseparty" by The Show Stoppers, "Gonna Fix You Good" by Alan Bown Set, "The Real Thing" by Kim Davis, "Ton Of Dynamite" by Frankie Crocker, "Beautiful Summers Day" by Mother Freedom Band, "Dreaming A Dream" by Crown Heights Affair, "On The Real Side" by Larry Saunders, "Something Fishy Is Going On" by Universal Mind, "Forget That Girl" by Jeannie Napoli, "I Got The Need" by The Moments, "My Man Is On The Way" by Rhetta Young, "Beautiful Woman" by Derek Martin, "It Really Hurts Me Girl" by The Carstairs, "I Want To Give You My Everything" by Carl Douglas, "Country Girl" by Soul Train Gang, "Gee Baby" by The Festivals, "You're My One Weakness Girl" by Street People, "In The Bottle" by Brother To Brother, and "I Wanna Give You Tomorrow" by Benny Troy. Numero, Early 80s. New Copy CD & DVD ... $12.99 19.98
A funky soul compilation, and a sweet TV show as well – presented here in an ultra-cool collection that offers both audio and video work from this short-lived Chicago dance show! The Chicago Party was a very local UHF program in the Windy City – one that was kind of a homegrown version of Soul Train, but turned towards the grooviest styles of the post-disco years – including boogie, 80s groove, and some tight indie club modes – all of which are featured on this sweet little compilation! The folks at Numero Group have teamed with Chicago historian Jake Austen for this very special package – which pulls together 16 musical tracks, then includes a DVD with 100 minutes of video footage from the 23 episodes of the show, mixed together in one extended program! Musically, the collection works as a great snapshot of the Chicago soul underground right before house music came into play – and titles include "Pull Up" by Universal Togetherness Band, "The Chicago Party Theme" by Jesus Wayne, "Think" by Rahmlee, "Garden Of Eve" by Yvonne Gage, "Girl You're Too Cool" by Magnum Force, "Into New Dimensions" by IND, "Freedom Sweet Freedom" by Ken Allison, "Blow Me Away" by MC2, and "Burning UP" by Donnell Pitman. (Very cool die-cut TV-styled sleeve as well!)
