Cree (Germany), Early 80s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Rare Caribbean grooves, remixed with just a slight dose of contemporary elements – yet still sounding very much like the warm originals that the Cree label has been uncovering over the years! The choice of mixers is great – and most tracks are slightly picked up in groove, but not too much – with a strong sensitivity to the best elements that make the originals shine, expanded out just a bit more. Titles include "Music Makes The World Go Round (Al Kent edit)" by Hamilton Brothers, "I Believe (Waxist edit)" by Zodiac featuring Denyse Plummer, "Beat The Drum (Keshav's jus now rework)" by Mansa Musa, and "All Nite Tonight (Nomad's reel to realness mix)" by Barbara Hernandez. ✨✧ Cory DayeCory & Me ... LP
New York International, 1979. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A dark little groover from the later days of disco – key crossover work from Cory Daye, and a great bridge between a number of different club camps at the time! There's clearly a mainstream diva influence going on here, but the overall quality of the music is a lot more complicated and hipper – with some of the jazzier and retro-tropical flourishes of the Ze Records scene, plus a bit of moodier electrics on the great hit "Green Light" – a chanting, catchy number that crossed over big. Other titles include "Single Again", "Be Bop Betty", "Pow Wow", "Keep The Ball Rollin", and "Rainy Day Boy". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a small peeled spot from price sticker removal and is bent a bit at the edges.)

KC & The Sunshine BandKC & The Sunshine Band – The Ultimate Collection (3CD set) ... CD
Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 36.99
KC & The Sunshine Band may have been a chart-topping act during the disco generation, but the Florida funky group have a heck of a lot more to offer than just their hits – as you'll hear in this massive and well-done collection that features 55 tracks in all! The group were formed in the heady early 70s years of Miami funk – and brought together some of the best tropical and soul elements that were brewing in that city at the time – all with a lean vibe that mixed live percussion with riffing guitars, sharp horns, and a completely infectious groove – often topped with catchy lyrics that really went right to the point. This big 3CD set features the group's best work for TK Records, plus other material done for Epic and Jay Boy too – with titles that include "Sound Your Funky Horn", "Why Don't We Get Together", "I Get Lifted", "So Glad", "Come To My Island", "I Betcha Didn't Know That", "Stand Up", "Love Me", "Summer Nights", "I'm A Pushover", "That's The Way I Like It", "Do You Wanna Party", "I Will Love You Tomorrow", "Sho Nuff", "I'm Your Boogie Man", and lots lots more – including some rare mixes too! KC & The Sunshine BandWho Do Ya Love ... LP
TK, 1978. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Classic 70s work from KC & The Sunshine Band – a record that's not as hit-heavy as previous efforts, but still a plenty great set that's filled with catchy dancefloor funk! KC's clearly feeling the heat of the disco fire he helped to ignite a few years before – and there's definitely an ear hear towards tracks that would boom out nicely on a heavier sound system – kind of a deepening of the sometimes bargain basement production the group got on earlier TK records. That approach doesn't dampen the groove, though, and there's still a nice mix here of soul, funk, club, and tropical modes – sometimes a bit off the mark, but still a heck of a lot better than most of the group's contemporaries! Titles include a remake of "It's The Same Old Song", plus "Who Do Ya Love", "How About A Little Love", "Sho-Nuff'" and "Come To My Island". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout notch, and is great overall!)

LemuriaLemuria (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), Late 70s. New Copy ... $18.99 29.99
A sweet bit of funk from Hawaii – and a legendary bit of free soul that's been winning global fame for decades! Lemuria is the brainchild of Kirk Thompson – who plays piano, bass, keyboards, and vibes on this very spiritual set of tracks. Master Henry Gibson was one of the executive producers, and he also plays conga on the set – which recalls some of the more spiritual collective funky projects from the early 70s Chicago scene, given a bit of a tropical twist. Many tracks feature vocals by "The Ladies Of Lemuria" – a lovely trio that's got a bit of an Emotions sort of sound – but the jazziness of the tracks is a lot freer than the backings the Emotions ever got, with more of a west coast Fantasy Records kind of approach, touched with some Stevie Wonder-like warmth. Really great all the way through – and impeccably put together, despite the indie origins of the record. Titles include "Get That Happy Feeling", "Hunk Of Heaven", "Dreams", "Mister U", "The Making Of You", and "Mystery Love". CD

Twennynine With Lenny WhiteBest Of Friends ... LP
Elektra, 1979. Sealed ... $19.99
Jazzy soul all the way through – and a great little album from Lenny White and the Twennynine combo – a group that features some especially great keyboards from the great Don Blackman! The style here's a bit like some of Blackman's own work – rooted in fusion, but focused towards soul – with vocals on all tracks, but lots of tightly crafted riffs and grooves underneath! Keyboards and guitars are in the forefront on top of Lenny White's drums – but tunes also feature some EWF horn work, and an occasional vocal chorus arranged by Blackman, and featuring Dee Dee Bridgewater and Googie Coppola! Tracks include the classic 80s groover "Peanut Butter", plus "Tropical Nights", "Best Of Friends", "Take Me Or Leave Me", "Citi Dancin", and "Betta". LP, Vinyl record album
(Still sealed, with a light sticker spot.)

✨✧ BarrabasForbidden ... CD
RCA/Disconforme (Spain), 1984. Used ... Out Of Stock
Pretty cheesy stuff from Barrabas – not that they weren't always cheesy to begin with, but this one's going over the top! The record is in a tinny 80s dance mode – still with the jungle/tropical themes of earlier records, but also with a kind of Miami Vice-ish style on the guitars and keyboards. We suppose it represents sort of a sophistication for the ensemble – but we'd make this the last one to buy of all their records. Titles include "Sex Surprise Big Surprise", "Lovers In The Rain", "Stop The Horse", "Inside Of Me", and "Hollywood Ten O'Clock At Night" – and those titles should say it all! CD

✨✧ Biddu & The OrchestraEastern Man ... LP
Epic, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Magical disco work from the enigmatic Biddu – one of the few guys working from a larger mainstream studio perspective that we can really dig in the genre! Biddu's got a way here of blending older pop modes, Eastern instrumentation, and soaring disco strings – at a level that's almost a slightly tripped-out take on the Barry White sound, but which is also unabashedly pop as well. Original tracks and surprising covers juxtapose on the set – and while some of the work on the album's relatively mellow, there's more than a few tunes that keep the disco groove up! Titles include "Nirvana", "King Kong", "Puerto Rico", "Boogiethon", "Funky Tropical", and "Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon". LP, Vinyl record album

Dash/TK, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great mix of symphonic disco and Latin hustle – one of the more compelling moments from The Rice & Beans Orchestra, served up with some tight arrangements by Hector Garrido! There's a nice blend of New York and Miami modes going on here – and the proceedings are largely instrumental, with some standout instrumental solos amidst the larger orchestrations – augmented by enough conga work to make things kick nicely on the best numbers! Titles include "Vereda Tropical", "Blue Danube Hustle", "Our Love Concerto", "Symphonic Salsa", "Catano Ferry", "Rice & Beans Theme", and "Disco Dancing". LP, Vinyl record album

Christmas is funky here, and in more ways than you might expect – as the package covers a great range of sources and styles, and even includes a few funky gospel numbers from the season! There's plenty here that we haven't seen on other Holiday sets – and the 25 track collection features tunes that include "Sleigh Ride" by Lord Invincible & The Tropical Spades, "Merry Christmas Baby" by The C-Quents, "Black Christmas" by Rose Graham, "Every Year We Say Merry Christmas" by Salem Travelers, "The Christmas Song" by John Edwards, "Christmas Time Again" by Tiny Powell, "Back Door Santa" by Clarence Carter, "I'll Be Home For Christmas" by Willis Jackson, "Blue Christmas" by The Meditation Singers, "Silent Night (live)" by Solomon Burke, "Christmas Is Gone" by Al King, "Merry Christmas Baby" by The Poets, "Old Fashioned Christmas" by Kenny Williams, "Xmas Done Got Funky" by Jimmy Jules & The Nuclear Soul System, "Christmas Greeting" by The Velvelettes, and "Silent Night" by Brother Joe May. Abattoir/Aloha Got Soul, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The sweet second album from this legendary Hawaiian soul group – maybe the island state's biggest musical export at the time, and for good reason too! Kalapana work here with the same tropical soul mode as their debut, but tighten things up in all the right ways – by stepping into a Cali studio that really helps them refine their sound, and set their warm vocal harmonies to some arrangements and production that really knock the whole thing out of the park! One track's a great fusion instrumental titled "Black Sand" – and the rest of the album is vocal, with titles that include "I'd Chase A Rainbow", "Way That I Want It To Be", "Nathan's Lament", "Moon & Stars", "Lost Again", "Wandering Stranger", "Freedom", and "Play It Sing It". Arthur VerocaiArthur Verocai ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
Sweet and jazzy pop from early 70s Brazil – a great little album that we'd rank with our favorites by Marcos Valle and Edu Lobo! Arthur Verocai isn't nearly as well-known as those two, but he works in a similar territory – taking jazz, large arrangements, and nice touches of electric funk – and working them into a groove that has the soaring and ambitious feel of the best post-Tropicalia work of 70s Brazil! This rare gem was self-produced, and fell of the map almost as soon as it was released – but it really deserves wider recognition, and shines with a depth that makes it an instant classic to our ears! Titles include "Presente Grego", "Caboclo", "Pelas Sombras", "O Mapa", "Sylvia", "Karina", "Velho Parente", and "Dedicada A Ela". (Brazil, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Tim MaiaTim Maia (1970) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Polydor (Brazil), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The incredible first album by Tim Maia – Brazil's greatest soul star in the 70s, and for good reason too – given that Tim was one of the few who could match the depth of American soul and funk at the time! Yet the music here is way more than just a Brazilian version of American soul – as Tim brings in some rootsier elements from local musical styles, and even some of the trippier elements that were running through Brazilian music in the wake of Tropicalia – all to make for this heady brew of sounds that's completely unique, and completely wonderful all the way through! There's plenty of tracks here that would fit well alongside both familiar soul, and the modes of funky artists like Marcos Valle at the time – and the set also features work on guitar and backup vocals by Cassiano, who'd soon go onto become a Brazilian soul star on his own. Titles include the break-heavy "Padre Cicero" and "Voce Fingiu" – plus "Tributo A Booker Pittman", "Cristina No 2", "Jurema", "Flamengo", "Corone Antonio Bento", and "Primavera". (Brazil, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album
