Doris DukeI'm A Loser (UK pressing) ... LP
Canyon/Kent (UK), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99 22.99
Doris Duke's no loser at all – certainly not with a record this great – a killer set of deep soul tracks that may well stand as the singer's finest moment ever! Doris works here at a level that rivals all the best southern-tinged singers of her generation – Aretha Franklin, Ann Peebles, and others – and also gets some key help from Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams in the studio – who helps give the record a raw undercurrent, linking it to the best Stax Records material of the time. Duke sometimes brings a sophisticated twist to the vocals, which is nicely appreciated – and which keeps everything far from the realm of cliche – on titles that include "I Don't Care Anymore", "He's Gone", "To The Other Woman (I'm The Other Woman)", "Divorce Decree", "We're More Than Strangers", and "The Feeling Is Right". Doris DukeLegend In Her Own Time (180 gram pressing – colored vinyl) ... LP
Mankind/Kent (UK), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
One of the few albums cut by this oft-overlooked southern soul diva – and one that mixes Muscle Shoals production with some nice uptown touches! Produced by Jerry Williams, Jr., aka Swamp Dogg! While the title comes of a bit flamboyantly, in truth, this record is an honest, personal, and earthy southern soul should-be classic. It's not only a personal triumph for Doris Duke, it's also one of greatest Swamp Dogg-produced records! Includes "I Wish I Could Sleep", "It Sure Was Fun", "He's Everything I Need", "Since I Fell For You", "Let Love Touch Us Now", "Bad Water", and a cool cover of "By The Time I Get To Phoenix". ✨✧ Lee GarrettHeat For The Feets ... LP
Chrysalis, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An unusual bit of club from Lee Garrett – a singer who's got a relatively rootsy sound overall, but who's working here with a set of smooth and and jazzy backings! Arrangements on the set are by Tom Sellers, who plays piano at the hed of a combo that includes Dave Grusin on synth, Tom Scott on saxes, Ernie Watts on flute and alto, George Bohannon on trombone, Lee Ritenour on guitar, and Harvey Mason on drums – all top-shelf fusion players who help bring a bit of polish to the set, in stark contrast to Lee's rougher vocals. The approach is almost a bit like some of Swamp Dogg's work for the clubs at the time – and titles include "How Can I Be A Man", "Heart Be Still", "You're My Everything", "Sad Sad Story", and "Stop That Wrong". ✨✧ Irma ThomasIn Between Tears (turquoise vinyl pressing) ... LP
Reel/Fungus, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from Irma Thomas – and one of her deepest soul albums ever! The set was recorded with Swamp Dogg at the production helm, and he gives Irma this wonderfully rootsy feel throughout the record – the kind of vibe she definitely never got in the 60s, and a sound that seems to unlock even richer tones from her wonderful vocals! And although Swamp's in charge, the record's definitely Irma's own, too – as there's none of the usual Dogg-heavy cliches that might get in the way of the vocals, and instead Swamp is supremely respectful of everything Irma has to offer – and really helps her focus on her best strengths. The set was recorded at Capricorn Studios in Macon, with Duane Allman guitar on a few cuts – and titles include "She'll Never Be Your Wife", "What's So Wrong With You Loving Me", "Coming From Behind", "Turn My World Around", "These Four Walls", and "You're The Dog". LP features four bonus tracks – "Save A Little Bit For Me", "We Won't Be In Your Way Anymore", "That's How I Feel About You", and "I'd Do It All Over You". LP, Vinyl record album
