Very hip work from Booker T & The MGs – an album that has them standing out under a pier by the ocean on the cover – clearly a long way from their Memphis roots! The sound here still has a good dose of those roots, though – but it also shows them picking up some hipper rhythmic touches too – heard most famously on the title tune, "Soul Limbo" – which is a great number to signal the more open styles in the group's approach. An obscure bit of late 60s Stax! Sandra's a great singer – deep soul, but with a touch of class, too – and the approach here shows that maturing Muscle Shoals sound, recorded at the Broadway Studio by David Johnson – at a level that's a bit in the Ann Sexton side of the spectrum – a sparkling, sophisticated feel that almost reminds us of the best female soul coming from Detroit or Chicago at the time, but with a slightly deeper range. The first-ever full length set of work from Howard Bomar – a singer who only issued a few rare 45s back in the 60s, yet kept on making music for years! From the very first tune, you'll hear that Bomar has a fantastic voice – that sort of searching, searing style that you'd hear from some of the best of the 60s – almost with a Stax Records level of production at times, but also varied a bit more over the course of the record, especially on some of the few later tracks! Slightly later than some of Isaac Hayes' biggest Stax albums – but a great little record that's filled with some excellent smooth soul material! The record shows Hayes really trying to push his style to new levels, and it's got a sophistication that you don't hear on earlier albums – a sound that hints at the Polydor years, but without as much of a disco influence. Ike's also dropped his thing of doing a lot of soul covers of pop tracks – which means that the record's got a lot more original material, served up with a new sort of focus on songwriting! Titles include "Chocolate Chip", a perennial fave on the dancefloor, in both vocal and instrumental versions – plus "I Can't Turn Around", "Come Live With Me", and "Body Language". The former leader of Ollie & The Nightingale steps out on his own – hitting a wonderfully deep approach to Memphis soul that's even more sublime than his previous group's records for Stax! There's a quiet genius going on here – a simple but powerful take on southern soul that pushes the genre into a new level of sophistication while still holding onto its roots. The album's a lost southern soul classic that should be on the shelf of anyone who digs male deep soul vocals – and we've never been certain why Ollie never scored bigger with the set at the time! The second half of the recording legacy of the legendary Otis Redding – all material that was issued after his tragic death in 1968 – tracks recorded during the 60s for Stax Records, but issued by Atlantic, who'd taken over the material during the same year that Otis left the planet! When Redding died, interest in his music was at an all-time high – and his non-stop flow of creativity at Stax left behind plenty of gems that were unissued while he was around – presented here initially in four full albums in the box – including The Dock of the Bay, The Immortal Otis Redding, Love Man, and Tell the Truth – all presented with their original artwork. Then, and even cooler, the set features two more LPs' worth of material – all the mono singles that were issued during this time, a total of 24 more tracks that really complete the package. The material is from a perfect moment in Reid's career – a time when he was changing his well-crafted Treasure Isle groove from ska to rocksteady – bringing in a new wave of inspiration from American soul, similar to the work at the start of the 60s that first inspired Jamaican artists to take off in some new directions of their own! The mode here is a blend of styles you might hear on Atlantic or Stax, but set to rhythms that are much more Jamaican – sometimes with soulful vocals in the lead, sometimes working as an answer to American soul instrumental singles of the time.
