Sweet grooves from George Duke – and a set that almost feels like it's got a bit more edge than usual – at least in recent years! The vibe's still got that warm mix of soul and jazz that's continued to make George great – but the keyboards also feel richer at points, with some of the mystical inflections you'd expect from the Dreamweaver title – served up by Duke in a mix of Fender Rhodes, acoustic piano, and other keyboards. A number of tracks have vocals – by George himself, with help from Rachelle Ferrell on one track, the late Teena Marie on another, and a group with Freddie Jackson, Jeffrey Osborne, and Lalah Hathaway on another – but there's also a fair bit of instrumental moments that spin out with more flourish than we've heard from Duke in years. Jessie Belvin's often talked about in reverent tones as a bridge between a number of different styles of 50's R&B and vocal soul, but it's not until you hear a great compilation like this one that you realize how fantastic his stuff really is. This excellent Ace set compiles tracks from his great early years at Modern, and even includes some stuff that he did with the vocal group The Cliques. The sound is deep warm LA R&B, with a touch of Charles Brown and Clyde McPhatter, but also a startling premonition of later soul artists like Jerry Butler. Beautiful stuff, with a wide range of tracks, including some unreleased material that's as good as the hits on here. CD

Much later than classic vintage for Chic, but still pretty darn great – and a record that was relatively overlooked at the time! The style here steps off strongly from the Chic sound of the early 80s – and the team of Edwards and Rodgers still definitely have their funky sense of rhythm intact – using drum programs, basslines, and riffing guitar bits to set most of these tracks up with a tightly snapping groove! The vocals are a bit more contemporary – presented in the way that some pop dance work of the time was using, but not nearly as cloying. After issuing a strangely silly remix project of George Clinton's Capitol work from the early 80s, the folks at EMI have finally corrected their mistake by putting together this straight set of Clinton's jammers for the label – all offered in their original versions! The set's not prime P-Funk to be sure, but there's plenty of nice moments, and this stuff sounds a lot better to us now than it did at the time, when we were expecting another version of Cosmic Slop to come out – and weren't smart enough to respect Clinton's clever shift into 80s groove material! Includes classics like "Do Fries Go With That Shake?", "Atomic Dog", "Nubian Nut", "Double Oh-Oh", and "Loopzilla" (presented here in a "broadcast version".) 12 tracks in all. CD

A great follow up to Mille Jackson's classic Caught Up album – but one that's also a key turning point too! The theme here is the same as the album before – with tunes that have a woman "caught up" in love and all of its tangles – but the sound is also bolder, more positive, and somehow more righteous than before – with Millie stepping from the weepy shadows very firmly into the mainstream – making a bold move forward for women in general in the process! Production is still by southern soul whiz Brad Shapiro – but he's also brightened things a bit too, in keeping with Millie's bolder spirit – shaking off some of the earthier tones of the music, and hipping things up slightly with some more modern instrumentation. Millie's vocals are completely wonderful throughout – rasping with that badass style that would later explode even more strongly – and there's lots of spoken bits that make the tunes sound even more personal – as if you're listening at the door, or tapping the phone while Millie's talking to her man! Titles include "Loving Arms", "Do What Makes You Satisfied", "Making The Best Of A Bad Situation", "The Memory Of A Wife", "Leftovers", and "Tell Her It's Over". The long-anticipated second album from Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings is a stunner – undoubtedly stronger than the group's fantastic debut – and a record that not only transcends the late model funk revival genre, but stands on footing as solid as the best hard funky soul of the late 60s and early 70s! If you're expecting a rehash of the heavy funk jams that burned on the Dap Dippin' album you won't be disappointed, but get ready for a deep, natural (hence the title) soulfulness that not only caught us off guard, but really forms the big, hard-beating heart of the album. The frothing, frenetic funk is as tight as ever, and in spots just as furious, but the attention to songcraft this time out is just as searing and indelible. The eight piece Dap Kings continue to be the best band in the land – with El Michels on baritone sax, Neal Sugarman on tenor, Homer Steinweiss on drums, not-so-secret weapon Bosco Mann on bass, vibes and piano. Guest appearances include fellow Daptone powerhouse vocalist Lee Fields on the the duet "Stranded In Your Love", and strings courtesy of the Bushwick Philharmonic, but make no mistake, this is the band's album. Amazing stuff from in indispensable group – an album that'll keep spinning in our circles for as many years as the great albums by the gritty soul forefathers do! Sublime soul from The Main Ingredient – a collection of cuts from their classic early 70s years at RCA – a time when they were topping the charts with their wonderful harmonies! Main Ingredient had a sweetness that was different than some of their contemporaries – usually upbeat, with a sing-song presentation of the lyrics that always made for some wonderful hooks – and an overall sense of lightness, even when the subject matter was somewhat heavy. And given that the group were always more of a singles-based act than an album one, we're more than happy to endorse this well-chosen package of hits – with 16 tracks that include "Black Seeds Keep On Growing", "Everybody Plays The Fool", "Just Don't Want To Be Lonely", "Superwoman", "Rolling Down A Mountainside", "Girl Blue", "Spinning Around", "You've Got To Take It", "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend", "Euphrates", "Make It With You", and "You've Been My Inspiration".
