A classic album of bluesy funk – one that features the guitar of Johnny Otis' young son Shuggie, in a slightly tighter setting than he'd been getting on some of Johnny's own LPs! Shuggie here is still very much under the guidance of his dad – working in a mode that really emphasizes the fuzzier side of his guitar, in a style that was clearly an attempt to hook Shuggie up with the Hendrix audience. Not that that's a problem, though – as the record also features some stone funky playing too, as well as organ work by Leon Haywood, sax by Preston Love, and some other great studio work by members of The Crusaders! A nice little follow-up to Billy Preston & Syreeta's work on the Fast Break soundtrack – and a record that's one of the few key sides to carry the older Motown duet soul mode firmly into the 80s! There's a great sense of balance here – one that uses Syreeta's sweeter vocal approach to lift up Billy's sometimes rougher sound. And arrangements and production by Ollie Brown ensure that the whole album's got a nice modern feel overall – a style that's got elements of boogie running through most of the numbers, but still with enough room for some of the mellower tracks that make the most of the duet setting. Martha Reeves' first solo album for MCA – an all-out studio affair that's quite different from her classic 60s work for Motown! The album's done in a way that really focuses on the deepest side of Martha's vocals – in a way that goes for the sort of "rootsy" soul that was cropping up heavily on majors at the start of the 70s – well-recorded in LA studio sessions, but featuring styles that were decidedly down-homey. Players on the album include Billy Preston, Dennis Doffey, Joe Sample, and Arthur Adams – all of whom bring a tightly professional focus to the backings – and Martha's helped on backup vocals by both Clydie King and Jim Gilstrap.
