Screamin Jay HawkinsPortrait Of A Man & His Woman ... LP
Hot Line/Trading Places (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
One of the most obscure albums ever recorded by Screamin Jay Hawkins – and one of the best, as well – a rare session done down in Nashville, and with a rootsy vibe that works perfect for Jay's amazing voice! There's a bit less hoke here than Hawkins can sometimes have – and although the songs still resonate with that striking approach that got Hawkins rediscovered by a whole generation at the end of the 60s, there's also less gimmick, too – and a mode that goes for some deeper southern soul elements at all the best moments. Titles include "Portrait Of A Man", "Don't Deceive Me", "Ashes", "We Love", "I Don't Know", "Please Don't Leave Me", and "Guess Who". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Penny GoodwinPortrait Of A Gemini ... LP
Sidney/P-Vine (Japan), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A legendary bit of jazzy soul – recorded by an obscure female singer from Milwaukee! Penny's got a warm style that's pretty darn nice on its own – but it's made even better by the great arranger Richard Evans, who helped out a lot on the session. The feel is very much in the Chicago sophisti-soul mode – and at times, the record sounds a lot like Marlena Shaw's best work in the 70s, particularly her sides for Blue Note in the early part of the decade. Includes the great original "Too Soon You're Old" – a jazz dance classic for many years – plus a stellar cover of Gil Scott Heron's "Lady Day & John Coltrane", and the tracks "What's Goin On", "Slow Hot Wind", "He's Come Back", and "Rain Sometimes". LP, Vinyl record album
(Great Japanese pressing – with obi!)

✨✧ Nona HendryxArt Of Defense (portrait cover) ... LP
RCA, 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Nona Hendryx at the height of her 80s glory – looking mighty fierce in a fencing costume on the cover! As with her previous set, this one's done with heavy help from Material – who bring in a beat heavy sound that's kind of a mainstream variation on the underground New York groove they'd had a few years before. Francois K helps a bit on the mixing, and you can definitely hear some of his playful touches – the sorts of sounds that helped a record like this build a bridge between the clubs and the streets, from Danceteria to the mainstream! Musicians include Bernie Worrell on keyboards and Bill Laswell on bass and tapes – and titles include "To The Bone", "Electricity", "I Sweat", "Soft Targets", "I Want You", "Ghost Love", and "The Life". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

✨✧ OriginalsPortrait Of The Originals ... LP
SOUL, 1970. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Stunning, stunning work from The Originals – one of the best male groups on 70s Motown, stepping out here on a record that might be one of their greatest ever! Although the group could sound strong in other settings, this album seems to have something really special going on – almost a sense of righteous, personal energy that matches the evolving sound of Marvin Gaye at this point – with a similar force that really helps redefine the way that male soul harmonies come together! The mellow cuts are tremendous – as mindblowing as anything that Teddy Pendergrass cut with Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – and the fuller numbers have this proud, soaring sound that's equally wonderful. Arrangements are by Paul Riser, Wade Marcus, and David Van De Pitte, and the track list includes "The Bells", "I Like Your Style", "There's A Place We'd Like To Know", "Don't Stop Now", "You Want Hearts & Flowers", and "I'll Wait For You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cutout hole, a bent corner, a small center split on the spine, and light wear.)

Verve, Mid 60s. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Genius! It's hard to go wrong with Arthur Prysock in the 60s – and an album like this is key proof of why he was one of the best male singers of his generation – even if nobody seems to remember that now! There's a mix of darkness in with the bold, adult, masculine approach here – a wonderful blend that really keeps things on edge. (Vocalists, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

An overlooked set of 80s soul, done in the best tight style of the Portrait label at the time – classy, but with a bit of a bite as well! Portrait, 1984. Near Mint- (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
One of the best cuts from Sade's first album – a slow chugging groover with a deeply soulful finish! The long version is appreciated here – as we can never get enough of the tune, and don't even mind that it goes on in pretty much the same pace as the regular version. 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Cover has some ringwear and a promo stamp.)

✨✧ SadeDiamond Life ... LP
Portrait, 1985. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A damn great soul album! Sure, the record was a crossover classic that got played to death back in the 80s – but give it a listen now, and you'll be stunned to hear how fresh it sounds, and how much it reminds you of all the British soul acts that sprung up in the years after it was released. We're not saying that Sade had a direct influence on groups like Soul To Soul or Brand New Heavies – but this album's strong commitment to acoustic musical styles and real jazz playing made it a real standout in the often-tinny world of 80s chart soul, and a harbinger of the later return to warm soul styles that would be spurred on by other groups from the UK. Plus, Sade's vocals are incredibly well-wrought, and are the perfect vehicle to deliver songs like "Frankie's First Affair", "Hang On To Your Love", "Your Love Is King", and the seminal 80s slacker dancefloor anthem, "When Am I Going To Make A Living". ✨✧ Staple SingersTurning Point ... LP
Portrait, 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great revival of sorts for The Staple Singers – and a record that has them hitting a whole new groove to really open up their sound! Gone are the cliches of earlier albums, and in their place is a tightly-crafted approach to 80s soul – one that's clearly aimed at the dancefloor, and which takes the group into a whole new world of opportunities! This sound is probably best heard on the group's sublime cover of the Talking Heads' "Slippery People" – represented here as a skittish soul groover, and even featuring guest guitar from David Byrne! The best other tracks keep up this clubby groove – and titles include "This Is Our Night", "Bridges Instead Of Walls", "Right Decision", "HATE", "On My Own Again", and "That's What Friends Are For". ✨✧ James BrownRoots Of A Revolution ... LP
Polydor (UK), 1960s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great collection of 60s work by James – one that goes way past the hits, to show the birth of the funky style that would forever be James' calling card in the 70s! The package starts in the earlier King R&B years – with tracks that are hard and soulful, yet which also have a unique approach to rhythm that was the beginning of Brown's experiments in funk. As the set moves on, it runs through an assortment of 60s hard soul styles – with touches of soul jazz, sock-boogaloo, and more – all coming together to serve up a great portrait of James' early genius! The package has a number of wonderful vocal cuts, some instrumental bits, and even some rare studio dialogue – and it features tracks pulled from a number of rare singles and long out of print LPs, complete with a killer booklet too! Titles include "Fine Old FoxySelf", "Doodle Bug", "This Old Heart", "You've Got The Power", "I Want You So Bad", "I Don't Care", "Shout & Shimmy", "Mashed Potatoes USA", "Maybe The Last Time", "Oh Baby Don't You Weep (parts 1 & 2)", "Just Won't Do Right", "And I Do Just What I Want", "Hold It", "Begging Begging", "That Dood It", and "Chonnie On Chon". 32 tracks in all! LP, Vinyl record album
(UK pressing, with booklet! Cover has light wear, but looks great overall.)

✨✧ Eddy GrantKiller On The Rampage ... LP
Epic/Ice, 1983. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An unlikely contender to the throne of king of electro, this early 80s effort from Eddie Grant helps to prop him up there quite nicely. Heavy synth driven grooves bubble along nicely with that crisp Linn Drum sound, and though this album benefited from some wider pop appeal, there's more than a bit of Eddie's reggae side showing through too! Includes the massive "Electric Avenue", plus "Killer On The Rampage", "Latin Love Affair", and more. (Reggae, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing on Portrait/Ice. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Dee Dee Sharp GambleWhat Color Is Love ... LP
Philadelphia International, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Dee Dee's come a long way from "The Mashed Potato Time" here – emerging as a full-blown modern soul artist, with the same sort of sophisticated twist as other Philly girl singers, like Jean Carn or The Jones Girls. The title cut is a great remake of Terry Callier's "What Color Is Love" – and other tracks include "Hang Your Portrait", "I Believe In Love", "Just As Long As I Know You're Mine", and "Tryin To Get The Feeling Again". ✨✧ Penny GoodwinPenny Goodwin Live ... LP
P-Vine (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A rare session from indie soul legend Penny Goodwin – a previously unissued live performance from 1974, featuring small combo backing in a sweet and jazzy mode! Penny's got a voice that's instantly recognizable – a bit raspy, in the mode of Esther Phillips – but cooler and more sophisticated, with a Marlena Shaw-like hipness that really fits the tracks on the set. Most of the numbers are traditional jazz standards, swung by Penny and a small piano trio – in a mode that's a lot more intimate than, but equally soulful to, the fuller backings used on her classic Portrait Of A Gemini album. Titles include "What's Going On", "Inner City Blues", "Midnight Sun", "Little Girl Lost", "On A Clear Day", "Day Dreaming", and "Where Is The Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Nina SimoneWild Is The Wind (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Philips/Verve, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A landmark album from Nina Simone – a set that really pushes her far past just the standard realm of jazz vocals, and which also helped really establish her role as one of the most righteous singers of the 60s! The set's maybe extremely noteworthy for Nina's original tune "Four Women" – a righteous portrait of four different women and their struggles – unique for its time, and a key part of the early Women's Liberation movement! The rest of the album has a similar political undercurrent – sometimes subtle, but there nonetheless – as Nina works magic on tunes that include "Break Down & Let It All Out", "Either Way I Lose", "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair", and "That's All I Ask".
