The setting is the Golden Gate, but the sound is pure Philly International – a rare early live performance from the label, featuring some of its key vocal heavyweights working here with live accompaniment from MFSB! Although the instrumental group backed Philly artists often in the studio, this 1973 concert marks the only time they worked live with the singers – in a stunning showcase for the young label, performed as part of a Columbia Records convention in San Francisco! Given the setting, and the uniqueness of the whole event, the release of this rare material is a treasure for soul fans of many generations – a rare addition to the amazing run of music the label first started giving us at the time. After working with Gamble & Huff on his big hits for Mercury in the late 60s, Jerry returned to work with the pair in the late 70s on their own Philly International label – stepping out with the same sweet groove that the Philly sound had brought to Lou Rawls, in a way that helped Butler really revive his sound at the time! The full rich approach really works magic with Butler's great vocals – in a way that showed that Jerry had never faltered during the 70s, but had just lost some of his steam through a bit of mis-handling by Motown on earlier albums. There's a proud, warm, all-adult sound to the album that we really love – heard to best effect on the anthemic "(I'm Just Thinking About) Cooling Out" and the great mellow groover "Let's Make Love" – but still pretty darn great on other tracks too! Gloria's not entirely in full blown disco-diva mode yet, and works here with a soaring Philly-styled groove – of the sort you'd hear with groups like First Choice or Three Degrees – almost grounded a bit in earlier female soul, especially in the vocals and overall changes in the grooves – yet sparkled up plenty with some fuller, richer 70s arrangements. A stone classic from Ron Henderson and his excellent Choice Of Colors group – maybe one of the hippest soul acts in North Carolina during the 70s – and one who are certainly different than the groups of that scene who were trying more for a groove that would please vacationers on the coast! Instead, Henderson's a mellow soul genius – with elements in his music that maybe rivals some of the better-known work of artists like Bobby Wilson or Leroy Hutson – but which also has some Jersey/Philly elements at times, too – especially when the rest of the group harmonizes along with Ron's lead! A clubbier album than usual from Curtis Mayfield – a mid 70s attempt to move onto the dancefloor, but a set that's still got the undeniable Mayfield charm! Half the tracks here were done in collaboration with disco maestro Gil Askey – and these numbers are longer tracks that soar and sway on waves of rhythms and subtle strings – all in a mode that's clearly going for a Philly-styled groove, and which manages to come pretty close in the end! The second half of the album, though, is quite different – mellower numbers that follow through on some of the more personal soul styles that Curtis was laying down on other Curtom albums from the time – a great blend of gentle rhythms, warm instrumentation, and those always-sweet Mayfield vocals – a sound that almost reminds us of some of the best mellow soul of the time from labelmate Leroy Hutson. The soaring debut of one of the greatest groups of the disco era – and one that would go onto be the sound of Salsoul Records too! The large mostly-instrumental ensemble is headed up by Vince Montana – who brings plenty of Philly disco touches into play with the group's wonderful blend of tight rhythms, jazzy instrumentation, and full strings – a blend that comes off perfectly, and with a surprisingly lean groove – thanks to Montana's vision, and help from arranger Ron Baker too. Touch Of Class sing in a style that's sometimes fragile, but often more suited to the soaring grooves that Davis gives them on the album – a mode that's partly disco, partly pop, and which should have been as huge as any of their Philly or New York contemporaries. The sound's still not as pop disco as you might expect from the time, and Dionne's gentle vocals are often cast in backings that step along nicely with a mellow, midtempo groove – one that's a bit like some of the best Philly soul of the period, yet still with a bit more California polish overall. The album works surprisingly well as a soul record – and really puts Warwick in the company of a whole generation of younger singers who'd risen above her by this point in the 70s. A soaring set from the great Eddie Kendricks – and a record that brings his Detroit roots into play with the best Philly grooves of the time – thanks to production from the mighty Norman Harris! Harris works with the cream of the crop of the Sigma Sound scene, and cooks up these beautifully flowing grooves for Eddie – clubby tracks that work perfectly for his sublime vocal approach, mixed with some wonderful mellow moments that have this really heartbreaking intensity – maybe even a bit more depth than some of Kendricks' previous few records. A really cool record, and one that digs deep into the earliest days of the disco scene – that time in New York where there weren't any records being made as strictly "disco" cuts – and DJs had to make their pick of soul and funk records from a time when the music was really changing things up! The title's a bit strange – given that Bunny Sigler started out as a soul singer in the late 60s, and continued to record well into the 70s too – yet it's also a reminder that by the time of this set, Sigler had become a real powerhouse on the Philly club scene – working as a producer and arranger for a host of other artists too! All that strong work comes to bear on this album – done by Bunny in close collaboration with Instant Funk, who provide lots of sharp-edged grooves that are heavy on guitar – and a nice change from the usual disco modes of the time. Tunes are clubby, but have lots of funk in the rhythms too – and titles include "Let's Get Freaky Now", "Simple Things You Do", "Cry My Eyes Out", "By The Way You Dance", "Glad To Be Your Lover", and "I'm Funkin You Tonight". A fantastic second chapter of work from Timeless Legend – material that's even more obscure than their famous first album – and that record is pretty darn rare! The vibe here continues from that one – an older style of sweet soul that's often more in the early 70s mode from the Philly/New Jersey scene, but given some slight shifts in the instrumentation – yet still never updated at all to fit a more mainstream 80s mode! Jean Carn was one of the best-ever singers to hit the Philly International label – a sophisticated diva with a style that would strongly influence soul music for the next 10 years, and a downright compelling voice that crafted some of the best modern soul of her generation. Although Jean started out as a spiritually-oriented singer working with husband Doug Carn and Earth Wind & Fire, this debut album has her grooving in a style that resembles the classy Columbia sound of Marlena Shaw. Like Shaw, Carn takes the best of her jazz roots, and strips off the nonsense to adapt to a more modern style. Gamble & Huff take a great deal of care with the album – and are careful not to bury Jean's voice in overly club-oriented arrangements, as they occasionally did with other female singers. A surprisingly soulful album from this novelty singer from the 70s! Back in the day, Charo was everyone's idea of a joke on TV, but this album's actually a pretty great little session – thanks to help from Vince Montana and the Philly crew! The album has Charo breathily singing and talking most of the lyrics – inflecting them with a slight Latin accent, as you'd expect from her many appearances on game and variety shows in the late 70s. Vince more than keeps things cool, though – providing some great soulful grooves, and a bit of vibes, to really flesh out the tunes, and keep them from being simple disco knockoffs. One of Eddie's monster LPs of the 70s! The whole affair was produced by Norman Harris, who, along with Vince Montana and TG Conway, gave the album a sweet set of Philly arrangements that worked perfectly with Eddie's strident soul-boogie style. Ballads and uptempo groover work equally well – and the album's got a wonderful sampling of both, showing Eddie as a continually rich soul singer with a talent that was worth all the hype he was getting at the time. A really nice batch of early 80s soul from Loose Ends – one of the best-remembered groups who were making strong soul music in Britain in the period – but who actually recorded this excellent first album at Philadelphia's Alpha Studios! Making the record in Philly was a wise decision – the sounds range from classic-level slow jams, to solid modern soul, to touches of electro – plus some more dancefloor-oriented groovers – coming across like work of deft scene veterans rather than a full length debut for the group! The songs were written by the band who, at that time, included Jane Eugene, Carl McIntosh and Steve Nichol – and titles include "Hangin On A String", "Choose Me", "Music Takes Me Higher", "Dial 999", "Tell Me What You Want", "A Little Spice", "So Much Love", and "Let's Rock".
