✨✧ Mongo SantamariaMongo Santamaria's Greatest Hits ... LP
Columbia, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Killer Latin soul from one of the all-time greats – a collection of greatest hits from Mongo Santamaria, but a set that's every bit as essential as his full length albums for Columbia! Most of the cuts on the album were arranged by Mongo's key right-hand man – the great Marty Sheller, who was an excellent trumpeter, a great writer, and a skilled arranger who knew how to make Mongo's whole group swing with incredible tightness! The cuts are all instrumental, with hard conga-heavy grooves, and some wonderful jazzy breakaway solos, played by folks like Hubert Laws or Ronnie Cuber. Titles include "El Pussy Cat", "The Now Generation", "Cold Sweat", "Cloud Nine", "We Got Latin Soul", and "Fat Back". (Latin, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album
(70s pressing – CS 1060.)

✨✧ CandidoBeautiful (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful bit of Latin funk – and one of the rarest albums ever from the mighty Candido! The album's one of the first that has Candido stepping out of the straighter Latin jazz mode of earlier years – working with a funky lineup of players arranged by the mad genius Joe Cain, and going for a mixed electric/acoustic sound that reminds us of Mongo Santamaria's best work – only a heck of a lot funkier! In addition to killer conga licks from Candi, the album features some really heavy guitar and organ lines, plus some good choppy sax work – wailing away with a really solid soulful sound. Imagine Booker T & The MGs working in Spanish Harlem – and you've got part of the picture of this one! Titles include "I'm On My Way", "Tic Tac Toe", "Serenade To A Savage", and the great "Ghana Spice (parts 1 & 2)". (Latin, Soul) CD
(A nice copy! Includes obi!)

✨✧ Fania All-StarsRhythm Machine ... LP
Columbia/Fania, 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the proudest moments of the New York Latin underground – a time when some of its best players wound up playing for Columbia, through a brief affiliation between Fania and the larger label! And although you might think that the album would totally sell out the group's best points, it's actually a great batch of cuts that mixes the All-Stars' strong salsa and jazz grooves with some nice club-oriented rhythms – a blend that was perfect to show the growing sophistication of the Nuyorican scene in the late 70s! All the right touches are still strongly in place – and the record features work from Pacheco, Roberto Roena, Mongo Santamaria, and Louie Ramirez, as well as guests Bob James and Eric Gale. Titles include "En Orbita", "Awake", "Juan Pachanga", "Steady", "Jubileo", and "Ella Fue". (Latin, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album
(Very nice original pressing, with inner sleeve.)

✨✧ Lyman Woodard OrganizationDedicacion ... CD
Corridor/Uuquipleu, 1985. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great little set from keyboardist Lyman Woodard – and one that's definitely got some of the Latin flavor promised by the spelling in the title! Woodard's still playing some mighty nice organ and electric piano lines, but the group here also has some added Latin percussion at the bottom – and this expansive, warmly soulful sound that almost reminds us of some of the late 70s Fania fusion funk records – especially work by Mongo Santamaria when he was using a lot of Fender Rhodes! A young Regina Carter is on the record – both vocalizing and playing violin – and the tracks are long, and really compelling – with a complexity that's different than other Woodard albums, yet still just the right sort of groove. Titles include "Itanita", "Don't Stay Away", "Dedication", and "And The Ship Sails On". (Jazz, Soul) CD
(On demand CDr pressing.)
