✨✧ Herb AlpertBeyond ... LP
A&M, 1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An incredible later record from Herb Alpert – working in a soulful funky fusion mode that really is well beyond the style that made him famous in the 60s! We love the easy breezy 60s sound of Herb & The Tijuana Brass too, but he really stepped up his game in exciting ways on records like Rise, and he takes some even further, previously unexplored creative steps on Beyond, this aptly titled set! Plenty of smoothed out funky fusion grooves, especially on the first half of the record, but by the midway point he's also dabbling in Spanish guitar inflected melodies, bringing in some spacey electronics and sequencing, and other daring twists – but never compromises on the consistently groovy feel overall. Includes "Kamali", "The Continental", "Reach For The Stars", "Red Hot", "Beyond", "Keep It Goin'", "The Factory" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Donald FagenKamakiriad ... CD
Reprise, 1993. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A surprisingly nice album from the better half of Steely Dan! This one kind of got cut out immediately when it was issued in 1993, but it's got a heck of a lot of charm – and given the success and style of the re-formed Steely Dan's Two Against Nature, this one sounds pretty great when we look back over our shoulder. And oddly, it's got some nice little modern soul arrangements that struck a strong note with the soul underground – and we can testify to the fact that the record was selling big with the stepper's scene in Chicago, even when it was stiffing in the pop racks elsewhere! Nothing fancy, but there's some nice moments, and with Walter Becker doing the production, it's kind of a Steely Dan album anyway. Titles include "Trans Island Skyway", "Countermoon", "Tomorrow's Girls", "On The Dunes", and "Snowbound". (Rock, Soul) CD
(Cutout notch through spine.)

✨✧ Miles MosleyUprising ... LP
Verve, 2017. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Blue-eyed funky soul from Miles Mosley – an artist who's working here with the West Coast Get Down group that features Cameron Graves on piano and Kamasai Washington on tenor sax! The vocals are definitely in the lead, though – as Miles draws on classic soul and jazz that really push his vocal range – on material that's nicely open and expressive, maybe more so than other singers of this nature. There's some larger arrangements at times – but most of the energy seems to come from the core combo, of which Miles is definitely in the lead – on tracks that include "LA Won't Bring You Down", "Heartbreaking Efforts Of Others", "Your Only Cover", "More Than This", "Reap A Soul", and "Young Lion". ✨✧ RosieLast Dance ... CD
RCA/Sony (Japan), 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
Rosie are a cool little trio with a very unique vibe – a bit of old school harmony soul, mixed with warm 70s production and arrangements by Michael Kamen! The music is a lot more soulful than you might guess from the cover – and it's clear that the group have really gotten great inspiration from harmony soul from the doo wop years onwards – yet manage to deliver their vocals in a way that's as understated as it is strongly presented – surprisingly un-self-conscious, as are Kamen's arrangements. The songs are great, too – never too cloyingly commercial, and with a balance that really surprises us – and as one more capper, the backings are by a hip rhythm section that features Dr John on keyboards and Cornell Dupree on guitar! Titles include "Last Dance Of Summer", "The Angel In Me", "Missin", "Run That Movie Back", "I See Home", and "The Words Do't Matter". (Rock, Soul) CD
(2017 Japanese pressing, part of the great AOR City series – includes obi!)

Tatsuro YamashitaGo Ahead ... LP
RCA/BMG (Japan), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $44.99 52.99
One of the key records that really helped cement the strong reputation of Tatsuro Yamashita in the 70s – served up with the kind of standout material that easily made him one of the most soulful Japanese singers of his time! Yamashita arranged and produced the whole set, which has these warm jazzy backings that include some early keyboard work from Ryuichi Sakamoto – and Tatsuro has an ear for well-produced grooves that almost rival some of the best Cali soul of the period, save for the fact that his lyrics here are all in Japanese! Titles include "Bomber", "Monday Blue", "Love Celebration", "Follow Me Along", "2000 Feet Of Rain", "This Could Be The Night", and "Paper Doll". (Japanese, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album
(Great Japanese pressing, with obi! Cover has a tiny bump in the corner, but is great overall.)

✨✧ Yellow Magic OrchestraSolid State Survivor ... LP
Alfa (Japan), 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from this groundbreaking electro pop trio – a group who seem to compress all the best electric energy on both sides of the planet at the time – creating a leaner, catchier take on some of the hippest German modes, mixing them with their own quirky energy, and paving the way for a huge amount of global acts to follow! The songs here are still better than so much that came later – a fantastic late 70s statement from the trio of Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Yukihiro Takahasi – who here seem even more confident than on their debut, with even enough gumption to remake The Beatles' "Day Tripper" as an electro theme. Other tracks include "Rydeen", "Technopolis", "Insomnia", "Solid State Survivor", and "Absolute Ego Dance". (Rock, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Yellow Magic OrchestraX 8 Multiplies ... LP
A&M, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The second album from Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takahashi, not as much of an electro groove filled affair as the first, but still a great batch of quirky techno-electro Asian pop with lots of great bubbling synth touches! 8 tracks in all including "Behind The Mask", "Day Tripper", "Technopolis", "Multiples", "Citizens Of Science" and "Solid State Survivor". ✨✧ Yellow Magic OrchestraYellow Magic Orchestra ... LP
Horizon/A&M, 1979. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
An electronic pop masterpiece – and the first moment of international exposure for the mighty Yellow Magic Orchestra! Before this set, the trio of Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono, and Yukihiro Takahashi had already been making plenty of waves on the Japanese music scene – but the record gave them a focused showcase they never had before, and helped set the stage for so much other electronic music in years to come! The tracks are tuneful, but also created from lots of different electronic elements – video game noise, analogue electronics, drum machines, keyboards, and more – mostly wonderfully tuneful instrumentals, which gave the work a very universal appeal. Titles include "Computer Game (Theme From The Circus)", "Computer Game (Theme From The Invader)", "Yellow Magic (Tong Poo)", "Cosmic Surfin", "Firecracker", "Simoon", "La Femme Chinoise", "Bridge Over Troubled Music", and "Mad Pierrot". (Rock, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label Horizon pressing. Cover has a spine split, light edge wear, mild corner bend.)

✨✧ VariousWho's That Soul ... CD
Irma (Italy), 1996. Used ... Out Of Stock
Nice compilation of soulful grooves that mixes up older material and some of the better modern soul from Irma's current roster of groups. The older tracks include "Dreaming About You" by The Blackbyrds, "Thinking About You" by Sylvester, and "Never Can Say Goodbye" by Isaac Hayes – and the newer cuts include "Rescue Me" by Funky Company, "Feel It" by Freedom Or Not, "Baby I Know" by Babyra Soul, and "Good For Us" by Kama Sutra. A good mix of grooves, and a nice one if you like the modern soul vibe. (Funky Compilations, Soul) CD
