SheppardsCollector's Showcase – Sheppards Vol IV ... LP
Constellation, Late 50s/Mid 60s. Very Good ... $34.99
Insanely wonderful work from this great Chicago vocal group – one that many would argue were as important as The Moonglows or El Dorados! The 60s album is a short-lived pressing on the Constellation label, and brings together rare early singles – including "Forgotten", "Queen Of Hearts", "Never Let Me Go", "Island Of Love", "Tragic", "Elevator Operator", "Give A Hug To Me", "Glitter In Your Eyes", "I'm Not Wanted", and "Never Felt Like This Before". LP, Vinyl record album
(Vinyl is nice and clean overall. Cover has light wear, and a small bit of seam splitting.)

Salsoul, 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the best tracks ever by First Choice! "Let No Man" is a sweeping anthemic club track – with a righteous lyric about love and losing it, and some killer production by the Baker-Harris-Young team that really gives the girls a great soulful groove! The Frankie Knuckles mix has some great strings, too! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Miroslav VitousMagical Shepherd ... LP
Warner, 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Very tasty funky fusion session, cut by bassist Miroslav Vitous in San Francisco – along with a group that includes Airto, Herbie Hancock, and Jack DeJohnette. The sound is very much in keeping with Herbie's early 70s funk albums – with lots of nice long electric grooves, and spare tasty keyboard jams. There's a woman named Onike who sings on a few cuts – and grooves include "Basic Laws", "Synthesizers Dance", "New York City", "Aim Your Eye", and "From Far Away". ✨✧ SheppardsBunky's Picks – The Best Of The Sheppards ... CD
West Side (UK), 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Huge in Chicago, but not nearly as well-known elsewhere, The Sheppards were one of the windy city's best-ever vocal groups, and they had a rich deep style that spanned the gap between R&B and Soul, in a similar manner to The Impressions. This long-overdue set brings together 25 cuts by the group, and it spans the years 1959 to 1969, giving you a complete look at the group by including raw early R&B material, plus later smoother harmony soul singles from the late 60s. We love the later stuff especially, but all the stuff on here's pretty darn nice – and all cuts feature production by the legendary Bill "Bunky" Sheppard, the Chi-soul genius from whom the group took their name. Titles include "Your Love (Has Got A Hole In It)", "Loving You", "Glitter In Your Eyes", "Tragic", "So In Need For Love", "Never Let Me Go", and "I'm Not Wanted". CD

Gene ChandlerDuke Of Earl (Vee Jay) ... LP
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $24.99
A sweet soul classic from the young Gene Chandler! The record is built around Gene's hit "Duke Of Earl" – and it features Gene in a ridiculous looking "Duke" costume on the cover – but the record's a great one overall, and features some excellent late-night soul material in a sweet tenor-voiced harmony style! Bill Bunky Sheppard produced the record, and it's got a sophisticated approach that offers a number of different modes for Gene to shine – heartbreaking ballads, rousing uptempo numbers, and some cool exotic tunes. Titles include "Nite Owl", "So Many Ways", "Lonely Island", "Kissin In The Kitchen", "I Wake Up Crying", "Turn On Your Love Light", and "Daddy's Home". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono rainbow label pressing with deep groove – a nice copy. Cover has a bit of splitting on the top seam, but is nice overall.)

France JoliWitch Of Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/Gold Legion, 1985. New Copy ... $10.99 14.98
A bouncy little set from France Joli – moving quite far here from her initial disco groove, and getting some nice 80s groove elements from producer George Duke! Joli's definitely going for a crossover approach here – especially given the hook-heavy sound of some of the best tunes – numbers that have enough of a bounce to work on the dancefloor, but memorable moments that might work on radio as well. France also brings in some ballads, too – but given her resume, she's definitely best suited for groovers. Titles include "Does He Dance", "Give Me Your Love", "Party Lights", "Love Always Finds A Way", "In The Darkness", and "Attitude". CD features 2 bonus tracks – Shep Pettibone remixes of "Does He Dance" – one a dance mix, another a dub! CD

✨✧ Bert RobinsonNo More Cold Nights ... LP
Capitol, 1987. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
An overlooked debut from singer Bert Robinson – an artist who was part of the large Al Hudson/One Way collective from Detroit, but who really comes into his own in this sweet little set! Robinson's got a very rich, deep vocal approach – almost a nod back to the pre-soul generation of male vocalists, but set here to some classy, contemporary vibes that sparkle with the best 80s Capitol Records touches – put together by Hudson and crew – plus others who include Stan Sheppard and Preston Glass. The best numbers are the ballads – smooth steppers that really suit Bert's vocal approach – and titles include "Never Gonna Give You Up", "Heart Of Gold", "No More Cold Nights", "You Turn Me Out", "Just Begun To Know You", "Burning Inside Your Love", and "Still Waiting". VariousBirth Of Soul – Special Chicago Edition ... CD
Ace (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A massive tribute to the genius of soul in the Windy City – a wonderful compilation that really gets at the special sound Chicago brought into play during the early years of soul! The set is filled with key cuts from the Chi-town scene of the time – some of them lesser-known that the famous hits always associated with our hometown – and beautifully selected to really capture a moment when soul music was first starting to come together as a style! You can definitely hear roots from Chicago blues, gospel, and R&B in the cuts – but they're definitely all soul, all the way through – a killer batch of nuggets that manages to offer up fresh bits from some big names, and uncover some great cuts by some less familiar folks. The package features full track-by-track notes on the tunes by Bill Dahl – and titles include "Tragic" by The Sheppards, "At The Party "by Wade Flemons, "Hi Diddley Dee Dum Dum" By The Dells, "Tell Him" by The Drew-Vels, "I've Got A Girl" by Major Lance, "Senorita I Love You" by The Impressions, "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" by Don & Bob, "My Heart Cries" by Etta & Harvey, "Isle Of Sirens" by Jerry Butler, "Enchanted Garden" by The Accents, "You've Got A Great Love" by The Chanteurs, "Father Knows Best" by The Radiants, "Let Em Try" by Rosco Gordon, "Behind The Curtains" by Jan Bradley, and "Puppy Love" by Barbara Lewis. Killer work from one of the smokinest soul labels of the west coast scene of the 60s – mighty Mirwood Records, a company that's kept the Northern Soul scene humming for decades! Mirwood wasn't one of the biggest, or most chart-topping labels – but the company came up with some incredible work in the uptempo mode that's really held strongly over the years. The label boasted some great singers with a straightforward, no-nonsense approach – often working with tight rhythms and rolling piano lines to send the tunes home with a solid sort of punch! This special vinyl-only set features some of the most crackling cuts from the Mirwood catalog – 14 titles that include "Do The Temptation Walk" by Jackie Lee, "That Beatin Rhythm" by Richard Temple, "My Little Girl" by The Bob & Earl Band, "I Wanna Do Everything For You Baby" by The Mirettes, "I Can't Get Away" by Bobby Garrett, "Is She In Your Town" by Curtis Lee, "Mine Exclusively" by The Olympics, "Where There's A Will" by Jimmy Thomas, "I Can't Stop You" by The Performers, "Stubborn Heart" by The Sheppards, and "Don't Pretend" by The Belles. SAM/Edsel (UK), Late 1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy 3CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from the mighty Sam Records – a New York indie that was born in the disco generation, but continued to keep great sounds going long after the crash! Sam started in the underground, and always kept a great ear to that scene, even when scoring big with hits – and the label's work often had all the polish of bigger companies, but a bit more bite as well – with all the right elements in all the right places, which has kept its music mighty strong over the years! There's no throwaway trash here, or easy dancefloor cuts – and instead the sound of Sam stays plenty strong from the earliest burst of disco through the big wave of indie club and old school in the early 80s. This massive 3CD package is shaped like a 7" single – and features 36 classic 12" singles and album cuts from Sam – titles that include "Kojak Theme" by John Davis Monster Orchestra, "Dreamin" by Greg Henderson, "Love Magic (disco version)" by John Davis Monster Orchestra, "Woman Of The Ghetto (UK 12" mix)" by Doris Duke, "Just A Groove" by Glen Adams Affair, "Come On Back To Mama" by Wardell Piper, "Begging For More" by Monica Neal, "Gotta Get Outta Here" by Lucy Hawkins, "I Found Love In You" by Rhyze, "Hold On (Jellybean mix)" by Kreamcicle, "This Best Is Mine" by Vicky D, "You Can't Stop (Shep Pettibone mix)" by David McPherson, "Don't Let Go Of Me (Shep Pettibone mix)" by Mike & Brenda Sutton, "Free (disco version)" by Rhyze, "Let's Love Dance Tonight (disco version)" by Gary's Gang, "Behind My Back" by Underground, "Just Let Me Dance (Jim Burgess mix)" by Scandal, "Don't Stop" by KID, "Can You Really See Me" by Sound Troupe, "Keep On Dancing" by Gary's Gang, and "Don't Give Your Love Away (Shep Pettibone mix)" by Steve Shelto. Buried Treasure, Late 50s/1960s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The title says it all – as the set's a collection of rare group soul recordings from Chicago, either unreleased recordings by obscure groups, or a few alternate takes of more famous numbers (but we use that term loosely here, as the cuts are all pretty darn rare!) Obviously, the fidelity's not in the 24-bit remaster mode – since lots of these come from rare tapes or acetates – but the set's a wonderful treasure if you're into harmony soul, especially of the Chicago sort! Titles include "Dear Lord" by The Vondells, "I Love That Guy" by The Shel-Raes, "Too Late" by Henry Ford & The Gifts, "Meet Me Halway" by The Condors, "Can't Take It" by The Sheppards, "Everyday Of The Week" by The Springers, "You Ain't Right" by The Nobles, "Darling Don't" by The Medallionaires, "Mtyllt" by The Dream Kings, "Restless Nights" by The Uniques, and "Boy Meets Girl" by The Delprados. ✨✧ AurraLittle Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Salsoul/Octave (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The image on the cover is a great summation of the Aurra magic – a sweet blend of male and female vocals with plenty of soul – woven together in ways that are quite different from more cliched duet modes of earlier years! The grooves are at the center of the record – set out strongly by producer/arranger Stephen Washington, with loads of great basslines at the core! Yet it's the vocals that really make the record sparkle – work by Starleana Young and Curt Jones – both very individual singers who have a way of coming together here with a very fresh feel! Studio magic allows both to provide backup as well as lead vocals – and the album's filled with great groovers that include "It's You", "Make Up Your Mind", "A Little Love", "In My Arms", "Still Free", and "Checking You Out". CD features bonus tracks – "Checking You Out (Shep Pettibone 12" mix)", "Make Up Your Mind (unreleased Tom Moulton mix)", "Make Up Your Mind (orig 12" inst mix)", "A Little Love (orig 12" rmx)", and "A Little Love (original single)". ✨✧ Skool BoyzSkool Boyz ... LP
Destiny, 1981. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Skool Boyz are a lot better than you might guess from their dated 80s spelling – a surprisingly tight little trio, bouncing along with lots of riffing rhythms and sweet keyboard lines, but also keeping things pretty solid with a good mix of ballads alongside the groovers! One of the group members is Stanton Sheppard, and Bill Bunky Sheppard's listed as the executive producer – so we're guessing there's some sort of connection to the earlier years of the Chicago soul scene here – and there's definitely a solid approach to the record that's way more than the commercial pop you might expect from other groups with "boys" in their name. Titles include "Jam Beneath The Groove", "Can We Do It Again" (which has little bit of rapping), "You Can Get Down", "This Feeling Must Be Real", "I Ain't Gonna Go Searching", and "You Took The Best Part Of Me". One of the bigger efforts from Material – featuring the core trio of Bill Laswell, Martin Bisi, and Michael Beinhorn – plus guest work by Nona Hendryx, Nile Rodgers, Whitney Houston, Archie Shepp, Oliver Lake, and Fred Frith. The mix of jazz and soul talents comes together more nicely than you might think, thanks to Laswell's talents for crossing cultures – and although a few numbers here sound quite dated, overall the album's worth digging out at least for a document of a unique moment. Arista, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the great ones from bassist Miroslav Vitous – a musician you might know from more atmospheric moments, but artist who could really be funky when he wanted! The album's got this righteous groove that really matches the energy of Miroslav's Magical Shepherd album from the same time – his warm, round acoustic bass tones right out front in the mix, but blended with loads of great electric elements too – including lots of wonderful keyboards, and some great reed lines from Jaroslav Jakubovic, a sharp-edged Eastern European player. The great Rimona Francis – of MPS fame – sings a bit on the record, in a cool style that's a bit like Flora Purim or Urzsula Dudziak – but most of the record is instrumental, and some of the cuts get nice and funky. Titles include "Folks", "New Orleans", "Majesty Music", "Streams & Fields", "X Rated", "Best Friends", and "Mount Shasta (part 2)". (Jazz, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

Brilliant solo work from Gerald Alston – the first album issued under his own name, after a strong legacy of work with The Manhattans! Alston's vocals are wonderful here – beautifully crafted, with a sense of maturity and feeling that most of his younger soul contemporaries couldn't match – polished with the kind of class that kept The Manhattans strong well into the 80s – but updated nicely with some of the more adult soul modes of the latter part of the decade. Production is by Stan Sheppard and James Varner, who know to keep things laidback to keep Alston at his best – and titles include "Stay A Little While", "You Laid Your Love On Me", "I've Waited All Night", "Activated", "We've Only Just Begun", and "I Come Alive When I'm With You".
