A wicked little solo set from one of Atlantic Records' hippest talents in the 70s! Arif Mardin's best known for his work supporting some of Atlantic's best soul starts – Aretha Franklin most famously, and a host of others – but here, he steps out as a maestro on his own – working in a great space that's somewhere between blacksploitation funk and electric jazz – all with a groove that's totally great! Mardin's wonderful sense of space and timing come even more to the forefront here than on his records with singers – and he does an amazing job of bringing the players together with the tightness of a soul session, but the freedom of expression of a jazz date. Smooth soulful jazz from Harvey Mason – one of his strong 70s winners for the Arista album, and a record that really brings a new level of class to his sound! There's less of the grit in the grooves than you might expect from the down-home reference of the title – and in a way, the record's a similar shift to well-produced R&B as Michael Henderson or Norman Connor's work from the same time – a soaring, fluid groove that's still supported by solid jazz instrumentation, but which also has a nice dose of soul in the mix! A pair of classic live albums from Frankie Beverly & Maze – Live In New Orleans from 1981, and Live In Los Angeles from 1986 – originally 2LP sets, perfectly paired here as a 2CD set! First up is Live New Orleans, in which the band grooves wonderfully before a crowd going mad in the Crescent City! The songs retain all the charm of the studio renditions – and are stretched out a bit more in the live setting, with some really nice interplay with the crowd. The set is heavy with early Maze classics – including "Southern Girl", "Look At California", "Before I Let Go". "We Need Love To Love", "The Look In Your Eyes" the big sample track "Joy & Pain" and more. Some of the tightest funky 70s jamming ever – a lost gem from Ray & His Musical Court, a group that perfectly fuses JB/Horny Horns funk with beat-heavy Afro-Cuban groove! Ray and the group are one of the more obscure funky combos of the era, and it's a damn shame, because the group's tight-as-can-be amalgam of JB's style horn riffing and thumping Afro-Cuban percussion is some of the absolute best of its kind. This group seriously smokes any of the current funk bands on the road! On these sessions Ray wrote, produced, played "organ flute" and provided some vocals in a large group that includes three trumpets, bass clarinet, sax, two drummers, congas, electric bass, and a line of mostly Spanish vocalists. A really great little funky record – even if it's a bit of a mystery in the record racks at times! This group were one of a number to use the name Smoke during the 70s – but at some point they were forced to change their name to Black Smoke, and you'll see the record listed both ways, but with the same cover. The band's a mixed ensemble of funk players – and they've got a sound that begins with a bass-heavy Average White Band groove, but moves into some more sophisticated playing with plenty of jazz funk touches. No surprise that the album's produced by Wayne Henderson, who handled some of the best jazz funk of the 70s – and in a way, the group probably sounds more like Pleasure (who Henderson also produced) than anyone else. The album features the extremely catchy soul tune "What Goes Around Comes Around", which has sweet ensemble vocals riffing along in a jazzy groove – plus the tracks "Screamin", "There It Is", "Freedom Of The Mind", and "Turn This Thing Around". Soaring, soulful work from South Shore Commission – one of those great upbeat soul groups who really helped shape the scene in the pre-disco years – effortlessly blending strong vocals and uptempo grooves, and setting the stage for countless others to follow! Like some of their best contemporaries, South Shore were a soul group first, and a club act second – and they've got this easy ear for rising harmonies that are fantastic, and at the level of the best work coming out of the Sigma Sound Studios of the period – mixed with maybe some of the slightly grittier sound of the New Jersey scene. The whole album's great – and titles include their classics "Free Man" and "We're On The Right Track" – plus "Train Called Freedom", "Any Day Now", "Before You're Gone", "Handle With Care", "I'd Rather Switch than Fight", and "Just A Matter Of Time". The setting is a great one for Mavis, and it's nicely free of some of the hoke that can sometimes creep in – a really stripped-down, authentic performance before a small but enthusiastic crowd of Chicago soul fans – with backing that's really just guitar, bass, and drums – plus a small backing vocal group too. The later years of the Sound Of Memphis studio – cuts from a time when the legendary deep soul powerhouse was trying on some of the newer modes from the end of the 70s! The work here is a real lost slice of Memphis soul – music from a time when the heyday of Stax and Hi Records had long passed, but smaller indies like SOM were going strong – and able to capture the shifting sound in the great soul city – as singers worked in the sorts of funky club and boogie modes you'd more regularly associate with New York or Chicago! The quality level is surprisingly great – especially since there's a nicely indie vibe to these cuts – not polished disco rehash, but the sort of underground club material that we've always loved from reissues on labels like Numero or Soul Cal – coming here from the surprising source of Memphis. Even more importantly, almost all this material never saw the light of day at the time – since the SOM connections to bigger labels had faded – so the whole thing's like a time capsule, taking you back to some real under-exposed days on the Memphis scene! Plus, these demo tracks are done in a variety of modes – some with very stripped-down instrumentation, some with fuller groups – and together, they offer a key look at the creative process at Stax – one that's very different than the iconic sound of productions in their Memphis studio, and which really shows an even deeper range of expression through the variety of approaches.
