✨✧ Richard Dimples FieldsMr Look So Good ... LP
Boardwalk, 1982. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An early 80s classic from Richard Dimples Fields – one of the most unique talents in soul music of his generation – with an appeal that's both down home, and smoothly sophisticated at the time! In a way, Fields' music represents many changes his audience was going through at the time – classing things up a bit, and heading into the mainstream – yet still very much concerned about the same issues and challenges of years past. The approach is almost southern soul by way of southern California – rough edges polished out, but still earthy enough to hang out with the crowd from back home. Almost all titles are originals, and Richard handled most of the production too – on tracks that include "If It Ain't One Thing It's Another", "After I Put My Lovin On You", "Baby Work Out", "Mr Look So Good", "Taking Applications", and "A Freak On The Side". ✨✧ Lee Fields & The ExpressionsIt Rains Love ... LP
Big Crown, 2019. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
We've loved the music of Lee Fields for many many years – but these days, he seems to be sounding even better than ever – taking all of his decades of experience in soul music, and blending his deep soul roots with an even more mature, open sort of style! And even though Lee's early work was great, we never would have imagined the greatness he can hit with a record like this – a set that draws on so many currents of classic soul, but finds a way to make a statement that's totally personal, totally original, and totally out of sight all the way through! Fields has a fantastic raspy vocal style, but he never just lets that stand as his calling card – because he's really bringing new inflections, new inspirations to the music – all while working with superb backing from Leon Michels and The Expressions. If you can imagine Hi Records mixed with James Brown mixed with New Jersey soul mixed with Daptone mixed with The Impressions – then you've only got part of the multi-faceted genius of this set. Titles include "Two Faces", "You're What's Needed In My Life", "Love Prisoner", "Will I Get Off Easy", "It Rains Love", "Love Is The Answer", "A Promise Is A Promise", and "Blessed With The Best". ✨✧ Richard Dimples FieldsDimples (1981) ... LP
Boardwalk, 1981. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A surprise hit for Richard Dimples Fields – and one of those albums that seems to turn up in just about every collection of records from the 80s! Although Fields first got his start turning out self-produced soul albums, and you'd expect him to sound a lot slicker here, recording for MCA's Boardwalk imprint, the record's still got a nice down-home feel that almost makes it feel like an indie soul record, despite the fact that Richard is going for a smooth modern sound on most cuts. Our standout favorite is the classic "She's Got Papers On Me", Richard's entry into the Barbara Mason/Shirley Brown song cycle ("you got my man", "he's your man, but he's my lover", etc) – one that takes the view of the man, but which has a sassy female monologue coming in at the end, telling him off! Other tracks include "I Like Your Lovin", "Let Me Take You In My Arms Tonight", "Let The Lady Dance", "In The Still Of the Night", "I've Got To Learn To Say No", and "Don't Ever Take Your Love". Eboni BandEboni Band ... LP
Eboni, Early 80s. Near Mint- ... $14.99 19.99
A really unique record, and one with a very unusual pedigree – as the group features key members of some acts from the Ivory Coast in the late 70s, mixed with various Motown session players in the studio – all in a way that offers up a completely different take on Cali soul from the time! The African artists contribute a lot of vocals and work on kora that's especially beautiful – and the other players are led by Gregg Middleton on bass, who also does all the arrangements – and the combo features Ernie Fields on saxes, Nolan Smith on trumpet, and Fred Wesley on trombone! Every song has a nicely different flavor – and titles include "Fasso", "Sing A Happy Song", "Desire", "I Love All", and "Mogofindeou Sopeunte". (Global Grooves, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Betty WrightBetty Wright ... LP
Epic, 1981. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wonderfully mature work from Miami soul legend Betty Wright – one of her overlooked albums recorded for Columbia Records, after big 70s fame at the TK label – and a set that has Betty mixing all her deep soul roots with a tighter, more sophisticated groove! Most of the album was handled by Andre Fischer, of Rufus fame – although Stevie Wonder and Richard Dimples Fields also put together one cut each – and there's a sweet jazzy soul to some of the best numbers that really makes Betty sound great – a mode that's nicely tripping along, with a groove that allows her to really be free and stretch out with her vocals. There's maybe a few moments that echo the late TK years – but go places that those records never would – and titles include "Give A Smile", "I Come to You", "Make Me Love the Rain", "What Are You Going To Do With It", and "Body Slang". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Miroslav VitousMajesty Music ... LP
Arista, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the great ones from bassist Miroslav Vitous – a musician you might know from more atmospheric moments, but artist who could really be funky when he wanted! The album's got this righteous groove that really matches the energy of Miroslav's Magical Shepherd album from the same time – his warm, round acoustic bass tones right out front in the mix, but blended with loads of great electric elements too – including lots of wonderful keyboards, and some great reed lines from Jaroslav Jakubovic, a sharp-edged Eastern European player. The great Rimona Francis – of MPS fame – sings a bit on the record, in a cool style that's a bit like Flora Purim or Urzsula Dudziak – but most of the record is instrumental, and some of the cuts get nice and funky. Titles include "Folks", "New Orleans", "Majesty Music", "Streams & Fields", "X Rated", "Best Friends", and "Mount Shasta (part 2)". (Jazz, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album
