Inner Shade4 Corners ... CD
Rice/Warner (Japan), 1998. Used ... $8.99
An excellent batch of UK soul tracks – and essentially an Incognito album! Bluey from Incognito produced the set, and the album features vocals by Maysa Leak and Christopher Ballin, plus some tasty reed work by Brit jazz funk players Ed Jones and Chris Demargary. Some of the tracks are instrumentals, and the overall feel of the album is very similar to the soulful smooth funk of Incognito. Titles include "Operator", "Loose Cannon", "Inner Space", "Little Sunflower", "Mood To Mood", and "Four Corners". (Neo Soul, Soul) CD
(Japanese digipak pressing – includes obi! Small Japanese promo sticker on back cover and over barcode.)

Gladys Knight & The PipsLetter Full Of Tears (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Fury/Charly (UK), Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Amazing early work from Gladys Knight & The Pips – proof that they already had a great thing going long before their later fame on Motown and Buddah! The tracks here were recorded in the early 60s for the Fury record label – and they show the group coming on strong with a very sharp edge – a style that's still got some traces of R&B at points, but which really sets a new standard for mixed male/female soul groups for the 60s! Gladys' lead vocals are nice and bold – and a lot less cliched than later – and The Pips do their thing with a wonderfully harmonic flair in the background. Titles include their big early single "Letter Full Of Tears" – plus "Operator", "Every Beat Of My Heart", "Room In Your Heart", "Stop Running Around", "What Shall I Do", "Morning Noon & Night", and "I Can't Stand By". LP, Vinyl record album
(60th Anniversary Edition – on clear vinyl!)

P Funk All StarsUrban Dancefloor Guerillas ... CD
Uncle Jam/CBS, 1983. Used ... $6.99
George Clinton may have pretty well disbanded Parliament and Funkadelic by the time the 80s came around, but the Mothership is still soaring highly on this first album from the P-Funk All Stars project – featuring some (but not all) of George Clinton's better players from various groups! Urban Dancefloor Guerillas his a pretty great little set of jammed-up cuts produced by Clinton, Bootsy, Gary Shider, and Sly Stewart. The flame was still burning, even in the "dark years" of the litigious early 80s – on a set that's actually a bit more stylistically diverse than some the related projects, though unified by never wavering funk! Titles include "Copy Cat", "Pumpin' It Up", "Catch A Keeper", and "Generator Pop". CD

✨✧ Pointer SistersBreak Out ... LP
Planet, 1983. Near Mint- ... $9.99
The album's no breakout for the Pointer Sisters, as the trio were already at the top of the charts when the set was released – but the whole thing does find a great way to keep the grooves coming in the group's lasting relationship with producer Richard Perry! There's plenty of 80s elements here – basslines, beats, and keyboards – moving the group way past some of the club and pop modes of the 70s – and keeping them perfectly poised for long-term crossover fame for years to come! Case in point is the album's long-running hit "Jump (For My Love)", nestled alongside other cuts that include "Automatic", "I'm So Excited", "I Need You", "Neutron Dance", "Easy Persuasion", "Baby Come And Get It", "Telegraph Your Love", and "Operator". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing – BEL1-5410. Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

PrinceGold Experience ... CD
Warner, 1995. Used ... $3.99 5.99
A great return to form for Prince – even though at the time, we all had to refer to him with an unpronounceable symbol! There's a lean, funky vibe to most of the record – almost a step back to the unified group approach of his mid 80s classics – and even though a few sonic elements have been updated, they changes have been done in the best way possible – partly by absorbing some of the new pop psychedelic touches that Prince himself had unlocked back in the 80s, filtered into the work of others, and which are taken back here with great modifications that really sound great next to the grooves! Titles include "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World", "We March", "Now", "319", "Billy Jack Bitch", "Eye Hate U", "P Control", and "Shy" – plus a number of short "NPG Operator" tracks. CD
(Still sealed!)

SheppardsCollector's Showcase – Sheppards Vol IV ... LP
Constellation, Late 50s/Mid 60s. Very Good ... $34.99
Insanely wonderful work from this great Chicago vocal group – one that many would argue were as important as The Moonglows or El Dorados! The 60s album is a short-lived pressing on the Constellation label, and brings together rare early singles – including "Forgotten", "Queen Of Hearts", "Never Let Me Go", "Island Of Love", "Tragic", "Elevator Operator", "Give A Hug To Me", "Glitter In Your Eyes", "I'm Not Wanted", and "Never Felt Like This Before". LP, Vinyl record album
(Vinyl is nice and clean overall. Cover has light wear, and a small bit of seam splitting.)

Mary WellsOne Who Really Loves You/Two Lovers ... CD
Motown/Kent (UK), 1962/1963. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A pair of incredible early Motown albums from Mary Wells – one of the label's first truly great singers – in a great single set from Kent UK! Mary Wells never sounded better than in her Motown years – and 1962's The One Who Really Loves You is key proof of her talents, as it's overflowing with laidback and mellow soul tunes – done in Mary's great blend of bluesy and classy styles! Titles include classics like "Drifting Love", "Strange Love", "The Day Will Come", "I've Got A Notion", "The One Who Really Loves You", "You Beat Me To The Punch", "Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right", "I'll Still Be Around" and more. The follow-up Two Lovers features the subtitle And Other Greatest Hits, but it's actually a great batch of songs that were most newly-recorded by Mary at the time – and not at all a simple round-up of singles! The approach here has just a little more rawness than some of the girl groups Berry Gordy was scoring hits with at the time, but also a sense of urban classiness. As is their wonderful way, Kent goes above and beyond here – with a great booklet of notes and photos – which shines a light on the making of these great records. Wonderful stuff! Titles include "Two Lovers", "Guess Who", "My 2 Arms - You = Tears", "Goody, Goody", "Stop Right Here", "Laughing Boy", "Looking Back", "(I Guess There's) No Love", "Was It Worth It" and "Operator". Death Is Not The End (UK), Late 1980s/Early 1990s. New Copy ... $22.99 26.99
A mysterious batch of funk and soul from tapes that were originally played at London clubs and parties in the late 80s and early 90s – the key years of the rare groove scene, which is represented here by a fantastic assortment of obscure grooves from the 70s! The presentation is different than a standard funk collection – as the set continues the Death Is Not The End label's love of found materials and obscure tapes – so that you're hearing the cuts through the filter of a live presentation or a DJ introduction – sometimes nice and clear, sometimes a bit more obscure – so that the whole thing is almost more of a sound piece defining a moment of funk and soul, rather than a straight funk collection overall. Titles include "Darkness Bout Ya", "Fire", "Birth Night", "Flashlight", "Set Speed Operator", "Shockout Business", "Work To Do", and "Pure Wicked Tune". (Funky Compilations, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Brenda HollowayArtistry Of Brenda Holloway – With Bonus Tracks From The Motown Vaults ... CD
Motown/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful collection of work from Brenda Holloway – one that really digs deep to find some overlooked gems from her 60s years at Motown – including 8 previously unissued tracks! The core of the collection features The Artistry Of Brenda Holloway album – a late 60s UK-only recorded issued by Tamla, and one that features rare singles from Holloway that weren't on any other albums – kind of a special overseas package dedicated to those early UK soul fans who helped Motown explode so strongly at a global level. Holloway's vocals are wonderful – as careful a mix of class and soul that you'd find from the best Motown artists of the period – served up at a solo lead level that's only matched by Mary Wells on the label at the time, and which really seems to point the way towards a solo direction that Diana Ross would later take on her own. In addition to the 16 track album, the CD also features 8 more gems from the Motown vaults – making for a set that's all-great, no-filler, and filled with properly finished killers that should have made much bigger waves at the time. Titles include "Together Til The End Of Time", "I'll Be Available", "Hurt A Little Every Day", "Where Were You", "I've Got To Find It", "Operator", "I'll Always Love You", "Just Look What You've Done", "Mr Lifeguard", "After All That You've Done", "The Love Line", "Can't We Be Strangers Again", and "Just Another Lonely Night". ✨✧ SadeBring Me Home – Live 2011 (CD & DVD) ... CD
Epic, 2011. Used ... Out Of Stock
Live magic from Sade – an artist who only seems to captivate us more as the years go on! This recent performance is a great illustration of Sade's continuing strength in soul music – as she's already great enough on the CD included in the package, but really shines brightly on the visual component as well – a DVD performance that's even longer than the CD – and both are filled with great live interpretations of Sade gems from years back. The film is beautifully shot, and the music is very well-recorded – and titles include "In Another Time", "Love Is Found", "Skin", "Kiss Of Life", "All About Our Love", "The Moon & The Sky", "Pearls", "No Ordinary Love", "Cherish The Day", "Soldier Of Love", "Smooth Operator", "Paradise/Nothing Can Come Between Us", and "The Sweetest Taboo". ✨✧ Mary WellsMary Wells On Stage ... LP
Motown, 1964. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An incredible record from Mary Wells – one that really captures the rawness of her vocal range, in a setting that's about as "live" as you could get for a soul recording of the time! Berry Gordy put this one together with a brilliant sense of space and place – allowing for a fair bit of crowd noise and cheering alongside Mary's vocals – in a mode that shows that the singer was every bit as great working a crowd as she was in the Motown studios. Tracks are a bit longish, and feature some nice spare backings on the best numbers – and titles include "Old Love", "Operator", "The One Who Really Loves You", "You Beat Me To The Punch", and "Two Lovers". ✨✧ VariousKeep A Hold On Him – More Garpax Girls ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sublime female sounds from the 60s – mostly soul, but a bit of rock too – all handled by landmark Cali producer Gary S Paxton! Paxton was a great talent at the time – not only for finding new aritsts, but also bringing them into their best light – coaching young solo singers and girl groups on some of their first trips into professional recording studios in some cases, so that the performances are remarkably assured and strong – girlish or naive-sounding only when the theme of the song calls for it, and more often surprisingly powerful for the early 60s period! As usual with Ace Records, the sound and the package are wonderful – crystal-clear remastering, and notes that show the whole underground world in which Paxton was a key! Includes "Just A Little Bit More" by The Idols, "Losing Control", "It's A Lonely World" and "A Tear" by Mary Saxton, "Keep A Hold On Him" and "Operator Operator" by Beatrice Lee, "I Won't Be Hurt Anymore" by Josephine Sunday, "Reap What You Sow" by Linda Mackey, "Why Mist I Cry" by The Idols, "Yosemite Sam" by Judy & The Jades, "It Kinda Picks Me Up" by Tanya Marie and more. 24 tracks in all. CD
