✨✧ Melba MooreMelba (Epic) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/Sony (Japan), 1978. Used ... $9.99
Melba Moore gets some great help here from the Philly soul duo of McFadden & Whitehead – whose soaring styles proves to be a perfect fit for her amazing voice! Melba had cut some great work before this set, but here things really seem to come together – her amazing range, her ability to be expressive without going over the top, and her maturing role as a soul singer – which would take her to great territory in years to come! There's almost an indie soul vibe to the record at times – never too overtly commercial, and sophisticated but not hitting you over the head either – on titles that include "You Stepped Into My Life", "Happy", "Pick Me Up I'll Dance", "There's No Other Like You", "Together Forever", and "It's Hard Not To Like You". CD features bonus tracks – "You Stepped Into My Life (7" mix)" and "Pick Me Up I'll Dance (12" mix)". CD

✨✧ George DukeMaster Of The Game ... CD
Epic, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
A late 70s classic from jazzy funk master George Duke! Master Of The Game is an excellent mix of jazz, smooth soul, and Latin riffing – really a perfect blend of styles that shows not only how far George's sound had progressed throughout the 70s, it also charts the development of the California scene during the late 70s. George has musical help from Ray Obeido, Roland Bautista, and Sheila E – plus vocals by Lynn Davis, Josie James, and Napoleon Brock. The tracks have a smooth sound that works perfectly with Duke's best keyboard approaches – subduing his tenency to "rock out" a bit, but bringing forward his classic ability to hit a stone mellow groove. Titles include "I Want You For Myself", "Every Little Step I Take", "Look What You Find", "I Love You More", "Dog Man", and "Games". (Jazz, Soul) CD

The second album by Heatwave – and a great effort that's almost as perfectly sublime as the first! Despite their UK origin, these guys really give American late 70s soul a run for its money – hitting in a sweetly compressed sound that fuses the vocals, keyboards, and grooves together wonderfully! The album hits equally well on all burners – with some key mellow cuts, and a few funkier upbeat numbers. Titles include loads of classics – like "Mind Blowing Decisions", "Star Of A Story", "Groove Line", "Send Out For Sunshine", and "Leavin For A Dream". CD

✨✧ Bobbi HumphreyFreestyle ... CD
Epic (Japan), 1978. Used ... $9.99
Some of Bobbi Humphrey's greatest work of the post-Blue Note years – an album that's filled with soulful fusion tunes throughout, all with a great focus on her funky flute! Bobbi also sings a bit on the set, but in a way that's pretty darn great – wonderfully sweet at times, with a bit of an influence from Minnie Riperton that really warms up the set. Arrangements are by Cleveland Eaton, with a bit of help from Art Jenkins – and production is by Ralph MacDonald, who clearly has a great ear for the blend of jazz and soul that Bobbi's going for on the set. And although Larry Mizell's not on board, some of the cuts here still have that stepping/sliding sort of groove from Bobby's Mizell-produced Blue Note years – a really wonderful sound that's a perfect showcase for her uniquely jazzy talents on the flute! Tracks include "Freestyle", "Home Made Jam", "Sunset Burgundy", "Good Times", "My Destiny", "I Could Love You More", and "If You Want It". (Jazz, Soul) CD

✨✧ Michael JacksonBad ... CD
Epic, 1987. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The third great album in the trilogy that includes Off The Wall and Thriller – and a set that still has Michael Jackson running strong at the height of his solo powers! Quincy Jones is still at the helm, and Michael more than proves that he can still come up with a pop tune without going too far over the top – catchy, compelling numbers that played well all over the world of pop – but which still hang onto just a little part of his soul roots too! That balance is a key factor to the success of this set – a record that helped re-ignite interest in Jackson's music, and introduce him to a whole new generation – while still keeping most of the older fans plenty pleased too. Titles include "Just Good Friends", "Smooth Criminal", "Bad", "Another Part Of Me", "Man In The Mirror", and "Speed Demon". CD

One of those records that we remember dismissing at the time – but honestly, it really lives up to repeated listenings in later years! Sure, Michael Jackson's no longer working with Quincy Jones – and instead goes for Teddy Riley and some other (then) contemporary producers – but that all makes for a very solid 90s crossover vibe – perfect for radio play a the time, not to mention heavy video rotation too – and definitely still another jewel in the crown of the King of Pop! Titles include "Remember The Time", "Why You Wanna Trip On Me", "In The Closet", "Jam", "Dangerous", "Gone Too Soon", "Will You Be There", "Black Or White", "She Drives Me Wild", and "Can't Let Her Get Away". Michael JacksonInvincible ... CD
Epic, 2001. Used ... $1.99
Well, it turned out that the man himself wasn't invincible – but his music has had surprising durability over the years – to a point where even later material like this sounds pretty darn great over the passing of time! The rhythms and production are more contemporary than some of Jackson's classics, but that also maybe gives the whole thing a crackle that keeps it interesting too – partly because so many of these songs were a bit under-discovered when the set was released. The song titles themselves give some idea of where Jackson's headspace was at during the creation of the album – and tracks include "Invincible", "Break Of Dawn", "Butterflies", "Threatened", "Heaven Can Wait", "2000 Watts", "Cry", "The Lost Children", "Unbreakable", "Heartbreaker", "Whatever Happens", "Privacy", and "Don't Walk Away". Michael JacksonOff The Wall (special edition) ... CD
Epic/Legacy, 1979. Used ... $4.99
Michael, if only you'd stayed at this level! This 1979 solo album by Michael is a killer batch of soul grooves – one of best moments ever, and a crowning cap to a stellar 70s run – both as a younger solo act, and with the whole Jackson family! Quincy Jones produced, and the album's got a funky undercurrent that's really stunning – clubby, yet plenty darn soulful, with a wickedly sly groove that others would try to copy for years, but never fully match. Titles include seminal groovers like "Rock With You", "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough", "Working Day And Night", "Girlfriend", "Off The Wall", "Burn This Disco Out" and more. Amazing amazing amazing work from the to-be-coronated King Of Pop! CD features some cool bonus tracks – voice-overs from Quincy Jones, plus interview bits, and demos of "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" and "Workin Day & Night". CD

Epic, 1978. Used ... $2.99
A heavy groove and a heady title that points the way towards Michael Jackson's soon-to-be legendary solo career – all served up in a batch of tracks that resonate nicely with the Off The Wall groove! The sound here really isn't disco or club, but it's a nicely upbeat groove that shows The Jacksons at the top of their game – tightly stepping and often highly rhythmic – and striking a great balance between strong lead vocals and some of the sweeter harmonies that got them going in the past. Titles include the sublime groovers "Blame It On The Boogie" and "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)", plus great sleepers like "All Night Dancin", "Bless His Soul", "Things I Do For You" and "That's What You Get For Being Polite". ✨✧ JacksonsLive ... CD
Epic, 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great mix of the talents of Michael Jackson and his famous brothers – and a set that's probably got an equal weight on the focus of both! There's a fair bit of Off The Wall-era Michael that informs this set – the kind of upbeat, grooving tracks that made that record so great – mixed with some newer takes on older Jacksons material, often revamped a bit with a slightly modern soul groove! There's a nice sort of liveness to the record – not as too-polished as you might imagine – and titles include "Can You Feel It", "Off The Wall", "Heartbreak Hotel", "She's Out Of My life", "ABC", "I Want You Back", "I'll Be There", "Rock With You", "Working Day & Night", "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough", and "Shake Your Body Down To The Ground". Epic, 1980. Used ... $2.99
One of Michael Jackson's last albums with his famous brothers – a record that was cut in between the two Quincy Jones albums (Off The Wall and Thriller) that would catapult him to megastardom! This set is still an all-Jacksons affair – produced and written by the whole group, and put together with some of those uptempo groovers that both Michael and Jermaine would showcase heavily in their own solo work. The sound's a nice extension of the late 70s Jacksons vibe, peppered with some of Michael's new strengths – and titles include "Can You Feel It", "Lovely One", "Your Ways", "Everybody", "This Place Hotel", "Give It Up", and "Wondering Who". ✨✧ JacksonsVictory ... CD
Epic, 1984. Used ... Out Of Stock
Michael Jackson's last album with his famous family – a set of electric 80s soul that's a bit different than Jackson's well-known solo work! In a way, the later Jacksons albums almost feel like a place where Michael can try out some ideas that don't fit as tightly into the overall sound of his own records – and there's definitely more diversity here than before – a shift between gentle ballads, beat-heavy tunes, and even a few rockish/poppish moments. Of course, we should probably be crediting the other Jacksons for their help in the sound here too – as they're certainly credited on the cover – but there's also less of the "many parts as one" sound than before, so it's hard to tell how they're working together. Titles include "The Hurt", "Wait", "Torture", "One More Chance", "Body", "We Can Change The World", and "State Of Shock", the big single, which features a guest appearance by Mick Jagger. CD

A killer for the Joneses – probably their strongest album all the way through, thanks to some great production and arrangements by Bobby Eli! This one's got the group taking the fragile harmony style of their earlier records, and filtering it through the Philly powerhouse groove to create a stronger, more high-stepping sound. A good mix of uptempo groovers and a few mellower tracks, and titles include "Who Loves You", "In Love Again", "Groovin' On Ya" , "Music To My Ears", and "Rat Race". CD

KC's definitely got an 80s look on the cover of this one – and the album follows with a groove that definitely matches that image – a re-tooled version of the Sunshine Band style of the 70s – one that's still pretty darn funky, just in more of an 80s sort of way! The basslines and keyboards reign supreme here – and KC's still got that wonderful ear for just the right sort of midtempo groove – the kind of cuts we always loved on his albums when you got past the hits, and which turn out be a great fit here for his smooth, blue-eyed vocals! Titles include "Stand Up", "Don't Say No", "Baby I'm Yours", "Summer Nights", "Sway", "The Painter", and "It Happens Every Night". ✨✧ KrystolGettin' Ready (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/FTG, 1984. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An 80s girl group classic from Krystol – the debut album from this tight quartet who really seem to rise to the challenge of the album's polish! Production is quite tight – handled by Leon Sylvers III, and a few others, in that west coast Sylvers mode of the time – but the girls have a way of stepping out with their own sort of feeling – harmonizing, switching leads, and even trading lines that really give us a feel for the character of each member of the group – singers Tina Scott, Roberta Steiger, Karon Floyd, and Dee Marie Warren. There's definitely a vibe here that prefaces lots of other female group soul to come – and titles include "Obsession", "Same Place Same Time", "You're The One For Me", "Nobody's Gonna Get This Lovin But You", "You Ask Too Much", "Acrobat", "After The Dance Is Through", and "Information 411". CD features four bonus tracks – "After The Dance Is Through (vocal mix)", "After The Dance Is Through (inst)", "Nobody's Gonna Get This Lovin But You (special version)", and "Nobody's Gonna Get This Lovin But You (inst)". Lil Louis & The WorldFrom The Mind Of Lil Louis ... CD
Epic, 1989. Used ... $9.99
A classic bit of Chicago house goes mainstream – and a suprisingly big hit from the late 80s. The main reason most folks bought this album was for Louis' "French Kiss", a sex-sound infused house cut with a "fast-then-slow-then-fast" groove that was endlessly dropped into mixes on radio and in clubs at the time. However, like late 80s house contemporaries Blaze, Louis actually turned out to be a pretty interesting soul talent when given a whole album to work with – and although "French Kiss" is on the beat-heavy "dance" side of the album, there's also a pretty interesting "romance" side that has some nice home-made late 80s soul tunes with great warm keyboard-heavy production. Titles include "Lil Tanya", "The Luv U Wanted", "6 AM", and "Brittany". CD

Lil' Louis & The WorldJourney With The Lonely ... CD
Epic, 1992. Used ... $2.99
A wonderfully well-rounded set from Lil Louis – one of the few early Chicago house artists with enough imagination to break into a wider soul audience and still hold their ears over the course of a full LP! The record's a strongly-crafted batch of tunes that mixes mellow ballads with more house-heavy numbers – all with the sort of organic shifts that Louis virtually pioneered at the time – a move away from simple dancefloor beats into a broader symphony of soul mode that almost evokes earlier maestros of the 70s. The album holds up surprisingly well over the years – thanks to warm production that moves beyond early 90s mainstream soul cliches – and titles include "Club Lonely", "Saved My Life", "You're My Reason", "Dancing In My Sleep", and "New Dance Beat". No surprise, Jazzie B helps out a bit on the record – although Lady T still handles most of the writing, arranging, and production herself – and the record has a slight undercurrent of higher ideals filtered somewhere down in the mix, showing a bit of a nod towards some of the more empowering themes in soul music that were bubbling up at the time! Epic, 1986. Used ... $14.99
A great little album from James Mtume – a bit more complicated and righteous than some of his previous albums on Epic, and with a real mix of styles that works nicely together! The album starts off with "Theme For Theater Of The Mind", a sort of 80s take on the spiritual/political soul jazz sound of the 70s – and a cut that really sets the mood for the album. The record features 80s funk numbers like "I Don't Believe You Heard Me", which is a tribute to James Brown, "New Face Deli", and "POP Generation", which was a bit of a hit. It's also got some great smooth quiet storm numbers – like a remake of Bootsy's "I'd Rather Be With You", and the slinky late night number "Body & Soul (Take Me)". And the extended guitar-jamming "Deep Freeze", which features a "rap-a-song" part! CD

Has there ever been anyone as lovely as Sade? We think not – and from the time she first hit our ears in the 80s, it was the start of an instant love affair that's continued for decades! Sade really brought something new to music at the time – a return to older styles of acoustic and jazz-based instrumentation, at a time when so many soul singers were mostly working with beats, keyboards, and samples – and a breathy voice that was instantly unique, and which kept on captivating us for years of recordings. This best of collection dates from the mid 90s – and provides an excellent sampling of tracks from Sade's albums Diamond Life, Promise, Stronger Than Pride, and Love Deluxe – titles that include "No Ordinary Love", "Like A Tattoo", "Cherish The Day", "Kiss Of Life", "Your Love Is King", "Hang Onto Your Love", "Sweetest Taboo", "Is It A Crime", and "Nothing Can Come Between Us". ✨✧ SadeBy Your Side (main, Neptunes, rmx, yard mix, reggae mix) (CD single) ... CD
Epic, 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the better tracks off Sade's Lover's rock, with a mellow vibe that does justice to the title of the LP in the original, and a similarly spacious island inflection on the "Yard mix". The Neptunes add just a touch of bounce to their mix, and the "reggae mix" nices up the track with a hectic dancehall feel. CD

Another nice one from Sade – perhaps not as edgey as some of her earlier work, recorded in a slightly smoother style, but still quite nice to our ears – as Sade's always been a pleasure, no matter what the setting! Includes the nicely grooving "Nothing Can Come Between Us", plus "Turn My Back On You", "Haunt Me", "Love Is Stronger Than Pride", "Give It Up", "Keep Looking", and "I Never Thought I'd See The Day". ✨✧ Jill ScottWho Is Jill Scott? ... CD
Epic/Hidden Beach, 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
Get ready to discover a fantastic new soul music talent! Jill Scott's the best thing we've heard in years – and she's a perfect example of the killer NuSoul trends that have been forged in the past few years by artists like D'Angelo, Mshell N'degocello, or N'Dambe (but Jill doesn't have an apostrophe mark in her name!) The record's a totally seductive blend of warm instrumentation, subdued funky beats, and immensely captivating soul vocals. The whole thing's awash in Fender Rhodes, giving it a spacey soul sound that will make the record a classic for years to come! Titles include "The Way", "Do You Remember", "Long Rain", "Love Rain", "Honey Molasses", "Slowly Surely", "Watching Me", and "He Loves Me" – but it's allllll good! (Neo Soul, Soul) CD

Sly & The Family StoneFresh ... CD
Epic, Early 70s. Used ... $3.99
Sly's leaping into the air on the cover of this one – and for good reason too, given the overall groove of the set! The album's a bit more stripped-down and upbeat than the previous few – almost more of a return to the simple funky style of the first albums, but with a slightly more electric sound than before – especially in the keyboards, which almost slide into the mix here with a Stevie Wonder-like quality. The electricity bubbles and brews wonderfully at the bottom of the rhythms – charging things up a bit, but still hanging back with a super-cool, laidback quality that few other groups could muster! There's a great sense of balance here that's brilliant – and which makes the album one of Sly's undisputed masterpieces from the Columbia years. Titles include the incredible "If You Want Me To Stay" – one of our favorite Sly Stone cuts ever – plus "Keep on Dancin", "Babies Making Babies", "Que Sera Sera", "If It Were Left Up To Me", "In Time", and "Let Me Have It All". ✨✧ Sly & The Family StoneSmall Talk (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic, 1974. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sly's still doing pretty nice for himself in 1974 – with a sound that's perhaps a bit warmer than on the early records, but still nice and soulful – and peppered with a good dose of funk! The groove is really great on the set – bubbling with a more "deep down" feel than the skittish funk of the first few records, and breaking out on some great soul numbers that show Sly to be an even better singer than before – touchingly sensitive at times, in a really beautiful way! Titles include "Loose Booty", which has a wonderful popping bass/hollow drum sound, and a tasty break in the middle – plus the cuts "This Is Love", "Wishful Thinkin", "Time For Livin", "Can't Strain My Brain", and "Say You Will". CD also features 4 bonus tracks – an early version of "Crossword Puzzle", the instrumental "Positive", and alternate takes on "Loose Booty" and "Time For Livin". CD

Wild CherryWild Cherry ... CD
Sweet City/Epic, 1976. Used ... $5.99
Wild Cherry may have been one-hit wonders – but MAN, what a hit! At the time of release, "Play That Funky Music" was seen as a joke on the disco movement – but all these many years later, a quick dip into this self-titled album will show you that Wild Cherry were actually the real deal – a funky combo with a hell of a way with a bassline, led by the riffing guitar and weirdly raw vocals of Robert Parissi! In a way, the group feel more like some of those blue-eyed funk combos from global scenes in the period – like Australia, Germany, or South Africa – where it maybe didn't matter so much if you lad a long legacy in indie soul, as long as you could come up with the goods. And sure, the lyrics get a bit silly at times – maybe more lifted from compressed post-glam AM rock than soulful roots – but the overall sound of the set is surprisingly funky, in a way that's maybe stronger than so many other acts who got more respect at the time. Titles include "Play That Funky Music", "Nowhere To Run", "Don't Go Near The Water", "99 1/2", "The Lady Wants Your Money", "What In The Funk Do You See", and "Get It Up". A great moment when compressed AM pop, disco rhythms, and bass heavy funk all collided at once! CD

Wondaland (Janelle Monae)Wondaland Presents The Eephus EP ... CD
Epic, 2015. Used ... $2.99
A pretty great project from the Janelle Monae side of the universe – a set that features Janelle on vocals on one track, and also helming the set as executive producer – along with key creative talents Rocket Wonder and Chuck Lightning! The album's got a very unified feel, but is a strongly collaborative effort too – with vocals by Jidenna, Roman Gianarthur, St Beauty, and Kendrick Lamar – as well as Monae – and each track is billed to a different artist, although the set was clearly conceived together as a single project. Stylistically, there are plenty of the sci-fi soul elments you'd find in Janelle's music, mixed with a more straightforward R&B vibe – and a sound that's compellingly catchy all the way through. Titles include "Let's Get Caught", "Yoga", "Going Nowhere", "Iknow", and regular and remix versions of "Classic Man". (Neo Soul, Soul) CD

✨✧ Betty WrightBetty Wright (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/FTG, 1981. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wonderfully mature work from Miami soul legend Betty Wright – one of her overlooked albums recorded for Columbia Records, after big 70s fame at the TK label – and a set that has Betty mixing all her deep soul roots with a tighter, more sophisticated groove! Most of the album was handled by Andre Fischer, of Rufus fame – although Stevie Wonder and Richard Dimples Fields also put together one cut each – and there's a sweet jazzy soul to some of the best numbers that really makes Betty sound great – a mode that's nicely tripping along, with a groove that allows her to really be free and stretch out with her vocals. There's maybe a few moments that echo the late TK years – but go places that those records never would – and titles include "Give A Smile", "I Come to You", "Make Me Love the Rain", "What Are You Going To Do With It", "Body Slang". CD features bonus tracks – "What Are You Going To Do With It (7" version)", "What Are You Going To Do With It (12" version)", "I Believe In You (7" version)", "Body Slang (7" version)", and "Goodbye To You Hello To Me (12" special version)". Falcons featuring Sonny MunroGood Good Feelings ... CD
Soul Junction (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... $11.99
A long-overdue look at the mighty mid 60s work of The Falcons – a group who are usually only covered during their early doo wop years, but who went onto do some tremendous group soul as well! The work here features many of the group's excellent recordings for the Big Wheel label with vocalist Sonny Munro in the lead – a really great singer who more than carries on the strong traditions started in the group by earlier singers who include Eddie Floyd and Wilson Pickett! The Big Wheel work is really great – often a bit Northern and upbeat, but with a very deep vocal style overall that's totally great. Added to the set is some additional material that Sonny Munro cut in later years – showing him to be an equally great solo act, working in some more sophisticated modern soul modes – briefly recording for Epic in the 70s, but represented here on some previously unissued tracks from the time. CD also features two tremendous Falcons-backed cuts on Big Wheel with singer Sandy Hollis in the lead – "I'm Tempted" and "Tables Will Turn" – plus the cuts "Good Good Feeling", "Standing On Guard", "Love You Like You Never Been Loved", "I Can't Help It", "Love Love Love", "In Time For The Blues", and "Standing On Guard" by The Falcons – as well as "Don't Leave Me Alone", "On The Other Side Of Pride", "Why Do I Let You Do The Things You Do", and "I'm Tired Of Being Your Play Thing" by Sonny Munro. Michael JacksonThis Is It (2CDs and book) ... CD
Sony, 1980s/1990s/2000s. Used 2CD/Book ... $5.99
The soundtrack to This Is It – the celebratory release of the King Of Pop's rehearsal footage from the days before his untimely death – which also serves as sort of a best of Michael's years at Epic/Sony! It does a fine job of touching on the each of the diverse styles Michael handled in his Epic years, the pioneering guitar accented pop soul magic to the more tender numbers, but, the boon for This Is It is the title track. It's a previously unreleased number with backing harmonies by the Jackson's, a fairly gentle and memorable tune, plus some disc 2 demos. Titles include "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'", "Jam", "They Don't Care About Us", "Human Nature", "Smooth Criminal", "The Way You Make Me Feel", "Beat It", "Black Or White", "Earth Song", "Billie Jean", "Man In The Mirror" and "This Is It" (main and orchestra version). Disc 2 includes demos for "She's Out Of My Life", "Wanna Be Startin Somethin" and a "poem" version of "Planet Earth". CD

LabelleSomething Silver ... CD
Warner, Early 70s. Used ... $4.99
An interesting compilation of work by Labelle – in that instead of just dipping into the group's excellent early albums for Warner, it also includes tracks from their years at RCA and Epic. The Warner material is the real highlight here, though – as it shows a side of the group that's rarely remembered in the mainstream, a subtle mix of soul and funk and rock that was a lot hipper than some of their later work, and which was very fitting for the hip LA sound of turn-of-the 70s Warner. Classics from that era include the group's funky classic "Moon Shadow" (sadly edited down to 4 minutes from the original 10), "Time & Love", "Wild Horses", "Touch Me All Over", "Morning Much Better", "Won't Get Fooled Again", "Sunday's News", "Shades Of Difference", "If I Can't Have You", and "I Believe That I've Finally Made It Home". Tracks from later include the hit "Lady Marmalade", "Sunshine (Woke Me Up This Morning)", and "Hollywood". CD
