✨✧ MtumePrime Time – The Epic Anthology ... CD
Epic/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/1980s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
James Mtume is an artist with deep roots in jazz – including some excellent spiritual jazz material in the early 70s – but here, he's hitting superstardom in the soul music world – by pairing up with Reggie Lucas for a great run of music from the Mtume group! Lucas also hails from jazz – Mtume met him when they were both working with Miles Davis – and both artists bring something really special to their sound that moves it away from simple commercial soul – a bit like the depth that lays behind Earth Wind & Fire, who have similar righteous roots, but are able to fuse a wonderfully smooth, groovy sound – and there's also a similarity to the late 70s material of Norman Connors, another artist who followed a similar path. This set spans the full run of excellent recordings Mtume did for the Epic label – almost a decade's worth of music, including some other mixes, and a few side projects with singer Tawatha. Titles include "Just Funnin", "Anticipatin", "Mrs Sippi", "Love Lock", "Closer To The End", "Funky Constellation", "The After 6 Mix (Juicy Fruit part 2)", "You Me & He (polygamy mix)", "COD", "Prime Time", "We're Gonna Make It This Time", "The Closer I Get To You", "Kiss This World Goodbye", "It's Non-Functional", "Body & Soul", "Breathless (A&G mix)", "Did I Dream You", and "Would You Like To Fool Around". ✨✧ Vivian ReedYours Until Tomorrow – The Epic Years ... CD
Columbia/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at the early work of Vivian Reed – a singer who got the chance to release a handful of full length albums in the disco generation, but one who sounds even better here right at the start of her career! The beautiful package brings together rare single sides and LP tracks that Vivian cut for Epic Records in the late 60s and early 70s – music that has the vocalist really hitting the full, deep range of her talents – in settings that maybe begin with familiar uptown soul modes, but soon step off into some even more righteous territory! A range of top-shelf talents help Reed out in the studio – as the cuts feature arrangements by Van McCoy, Jimmy Wisner, Thom Bell, Bobby Martin, and Herb Bernstein – all of whom really find a way to unlock Vivian's vocals and really let them soar. Even the familiar tunes take on a new sort of vibe here – great soulful readings that are quite different than the originals – on titles that include "Missing You", "Shape Of Things To Come", "Don't Close The Door On Me", "I Feel The Earth Move", "Lean On Me", "Mama Open The Door", "Baby Baby", "I", "Yours Until Tomorrow", "I Wanna Be Free", "Look The Other Way", "Down Here On The Ground", "Walk On My Side", and "Then I'll Be Over You". ✨✧ Staple SingersFor What It's Worth – The Complete Epic Recordings 1964 to 1968 (Amen/Pray On/Freedom Highway/Why/For What It's Worth/What The World Needs Now) (3CD set) ... CD
Epic/Soulmusic.com (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing early work from The Staple Singers – six records that are quite different than their later fame on Stax Records during the 70s – and which have a vibe that's different too, yet equally powerful! There's a sublime mix of social politics and spiritual energy going on here – as the quartet are already moving far past standard gospel modes, and mixing their faith with a strong message during these key years of the Civil Rights era – really bridging divides with the music on these albums. The music has that sublime blend that the group perfected right from the start – almost a secret inclusion of a larger social agenda, presented amidst gospel tunes re-arranged by Pops Staples – plus some of his own great tracks too – able to reach across the aisle, and bring so many new ears to the messages the group was putting forth. The box set features six full albums – some never reissued since the LP era – Amen, Pray On, "Why, "For What It's Worth, What The World Needs Now Is Love, and the great live album Freedom Highway – recorded in Chicago! ✨✧ Tower Of PowerYou Ought To Be Havin Fun – The Columbia/Epic Anthology ... CD
Columbia/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/Mid 90s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Two slices of work from Tower Of Power – both recorded for Sony/CBS, but with over a decade between them! First up, the set presents 19 killer cuts from the Columbia Records years of Tower Of Power – a time when the group moved away from Warner Brothers, where they were maybe losing a little steam – and forged this fantastic sense of soul that was missing from some of their earlier records! At the start, TOP were a rock-solid funk act – but here, they also bring a stronger soul approach to their vocals and songwriting – in a way that mixes their always-sharp instrumentation with a deeper, more developed vibe – super-strong material that sometimes doesn't always get its due. The set brings together Columbia tracks from albums, singles, and even some b-sides – with tracks that include "You Ought To Be Havin Fun", "Am I A Fool", "Lovin You Is Gonna See Me Thru", "Ain't Nothin Stoppin Us Now", "Because I Think The World Of You", "We Came To Play", "Love Bug", "While We Went To The Moon", "Somewhere Down The Road", "Deal With It", "By Your Side", and "Heaven Must Have Made You". The second half of the package features tunes the group recorded for Epic Records during the mid 90s – material that was only issued on CD at the time, and which shows TOP to continue the strengths of their earlier years! Some of the cuts go for a retro funk approach, others have a more contemporary soul vibe – and the set features 16 Epic tracks that include "A Little Knowledge", "Recapture The Magic", "Soul With A Capital S", "Please Come Back To Stay", "You", "Rhythm & Business", "Come To A Decision", "Undercurrent", "Diggin On James Brown", and "How Could This Happen To Me". Carl AndersonOn & On ... LP
Epic, 1984. Near Mint- ... $3.99
A sweet second set from 80s singer Carl Anderson – a date that's got poise, class, and a heck of a lot of soul! Although a mainstream effort, there's a nice sort of depth to the record – one that shows that Columbia wasn't pitching Anderson as much towards a crossover artist as they were some of their other mid 80s acts – instead, letting him really hang back and do his own thing – in a warmly-swinging mode that still holds up beautifully over the years! The record's a real standout in 80s mainstream male soul – and thanks is certainly due to producer/arrangers John Skip Anderson and Steve Williams, who carefully avoid the commercial side of the spectrum. Titles include "Don't Make Me Wait", "Try", "Keep It Alive", "On & On", "Lately", and "Time To Win". LP, Vinyl record album

BrickBest Of Brick ... CD
Epic, Mid 70s. Used ... $3.99
Classic work from Brick – a group who went onto become surprisingly successful during the 70s with a hot Atlanta blend of funky soul and uptempo club grooves. The group has a feel that would be taken up heavily a few years later by LA funk combos – particularly those on the Solar label – and their style of slicking up funky licks into a tightly compressed sound was obviously a bit hit with the kids of their generation, and hip hop sample heads in years to come. This 12 track greatest hits set includes the classic g-funk number "Dusic", plus "Music Magic", "Dazz", "Good High", "Free Happy", "We Don't Wanna Sit Down, We Wanna Get Down", and "Living From The Mind". ✨✧ Lou CourtneyI'm In Need Of Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/Soul Brother (UK), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful album of mellow soul tracks! The record is Lou Courtney's masterpiece – and it's a jam-packed set filled with great tracks that rank right up there with classic 70s work by artists like Marvin Gaye, Leroy Hutson, or Leon Ware! Leon Pendarvis handled most of the arrangements – and the record's got a wonderfully full soul sound – with a mix of moody keyboard-driven groovers and ballads – all topped by excellent vocals from Lou, miles ahead of any work he did in the early days! The best thing, though, is the songwriting, as these tracks rank right up there with the best underground mellow soul we can think of – sophisticated yet not soppy, filled with soulful lyrics about love and losing it, never giving into cliches of other soul from the time. A real dream of an album – and filled with great tracks like "I Will If You Will", "I'm In Need Of Love", "Just To Let Him Break Your Heart", "Somebody New Is Loving On You", and "The Common Broken Heart" – plus with the bonus cuts "Beware" and "Why". The only album ever from Groove Theory – but the set that introduced the world to Amel Larrieux – whose vocal talents alone are worth the price of admission! The feel here is a bit more mainstream soul than some of Amel's later work – but given the mid 90s date of release, the sound is still plenty underground – and filled with the warmer tones and deeper soul styles that wouldn't be that common until years later when the Neo Soul scene rose to prominence. The overall package is the work of former Mantronix member Bryce Wilson – who plays some keys, and ensures that the rhythms are never too bombastic to overwhelm Amel's vocals. Titles include the massive stepper's cut "Tell Me" that hit huge here in Chicago – plus "Baby Luv", "Didja Know", "Come Home", "Hello It's Me", "Hey U", "Good 2 Me", "You're Not The 1", and "Boy At The Window". Epic, 1980. Very Good ... $4.99
Killer soul from Heatwave – a tight little group who definitely made the UK proud at the end of the 70s! The album's a bit more obscure than the group's first few, but the sound is very much the same – a warmly grooving approach that's neither too disco, nor too sleepy – always catchy on the hooks, and recorded with a nicely flanged style on the vocals – so that they're compressed a bit, and slide nicely in alongside the beats and keys! The mighty Rod Tempterton's still handling a good deal of the arrangements on the set, and some of the backings are orchestrated by Johnny Cameron – almost in a late 70s update of his earlier funky style. Titles include the funky cut "Gangsters Of The Groove", plus "All I Am", "Dreamin You", "Party Suite", "Posin Til Closin", "Turn Around", and "Where Did I Go Wrong", a sweet little ballad. A killer album of crossover soul from the mid 70s – one that dropped like a bomb when it hit, and gave this UK group a number of big hits in America! Keyboardist Rod Temperton wrote all the tracks on the album – and he's got keen talent for both funky numbers and ballads. If soul stations played album side specials the way that classic rock stations do, side one would be in heavy rotation – as it kicks off with the funky title cut, rolls into the hit "Boogie Nights", cuts to the sample classic "Ain't No Half Steppin" (forever made famous by Big Daddy Kane), and steps into the moody ballad "Always & Forever". It's hard to beat that lineup, but side two does a pretty good job – and includes a similar mix of titles like "Super Soul Sister", "All You Do Is Dial", and "Sho'nuff Must Be Love". CD

Some of Bobbi Humphrey's greatest work of the post-Blue Note years – an album that's filled with soulful fusion tunes throughout, all with a great focus on her funky flute! Bobbi also sings a bit on the set, but in a way that's pretty darn great – wonderfully sweet at times, with a bit of an influence from Minnie Riperton that really warms up the set. Arrangements are by Cleveland Eaton, with a bit of help from Art Jenkins – and production is by Ralph MacDonald, who clearly has a great ear for the blend of jazz and soul that Bobbi's going for on the set. And although Larry Mizell's not on board, some of the cuts here still have that stepping/sliding sort of groove from Bobby's Mizell-produced Blue Note years – a really wonderful sound that's a perfect showcase for her uniquely jazzy talents on the flute! Tracks include "Freestyle", "Home Made Jam", "Sunset Burgundy", "Good Times", "My Destiny", "I Could Love You More", and "If You Want It". (Jazz, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

Quincy Jones produced, and the album's got a funky undercurrent that's really stunning – clubby, yet plenty darn soulful, with a wickedly sly groove that others would try to copy for years, but never fully match. Titles include seminal groovers like "Rock With You", "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough", "Working Day And Night", "Girlfriend", "Off The Wall", "Burn This Disco Out" and more. A heavy groove and a heady title that points the way towards Michael Jackson's soon-to-be legendary solo career – all served up in a batch of tracks that resonate nicely with the Off The Wall groove! The sound here really isn't disco or club, but it's a nicely upbeat groove that shows The Jacksons at the top of their game – tightly stepping and often highly rhythmic – and striking a great balance between strong lead vocals and some of the sweeter harmonies that got them going in the past. This set is still an all-Jacksons affair – produced and written by the whole group, and put together with some of those uptempo groovers that both Michael and Jermaine would showcase heavily in their own solo work. The sound's a nice extension of the late 70s Jacksons vibe, peppered with some of Michael's new strengths – and titles include "Can You Feel It", "Lovely One", "Your Ways", "Everybody", "This Place Hotel", "Give It Up", and "Wondering Who". Michael Jackson's last album with his famous family – a set of electric 80s soul that's a bit different than Jackson's well-known solo work! In a way, the later Jacksons albums almost feel like a place where Michael can try out some ideas that don't fit as tightly into the overall sound of his own records – and there's definitely more diversity here than before – a shift between gentle ballads, beat-heavy tunes, and even a few rockish/poppish moments. Of course, we should probably be crediting the other Jacksons for their help in the sound here too – as they're certainly credited on the cover – but there's also less of the "many parts as one" sound than before, so it's hard to tell how they're working together. Titles include "The Hurt", "Wait", "Torture", "One More Chance", "Body", "We Can Change The World", and "State Of Shock", the big single, which features a guest appearance by Mick Jagger. Alphonso JohnsonMoonshadows/Yesterday's Dreams/Spellbound ... CD
Epic/BGO (UK), 1976/1977. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99
A great run of records from Alphonso Johnson – the best of his career, wrapped up here in one sweet set! First up is Moonshadows – one of the earliest of bassist Alphonso Johnson's funky fusion albums for Epic! Moonshadows is a nice little set of choppy grooves that recalls the best Herbie Hancock moments of the early 70s, plus some of the side projects of the Headhunters. Warmly funky, but with a nice edge – with a more jazz funk rooted sound than the later, slightly heavier Spellbound! The great group of players includes Patrice Rushen is on keyboards, Benny Maupin on reeds, Lee Ritenour on guitars, Airto Moriera on percussion, Gary Bartz on sax, plus Narada Michael Walden and Ndugu Chancler on drums. Tracks include "Stump", "Cosmoba Place", "Involuntary Bliss", "On The Case", "Amarteifio", "Pandora's Box" and the breezy "Up From The Cellar", which features vocals by Flora Purim! Yesterday's Dreams is a killer all-star session of funky fusion tracks – with a nice tight sound produced by Skip Drinkwater! Yesterday's Dreams differs a little from Alphonso's other strong mid 70s efforts in that it's not as spacey as a whole – but the rubbery, cleanly funky grooves are just as strong – and the record as a whole makes for more of a showcase for his excellent group of players! Bassist Johnson leads the session, but there's a huge amount of guests, such as Grover Washington, Patrice Rushen, Mike Clark, and Sheila Escovedo. Plus, Jon Lucien, Diane Reeves, Flora Purim, and Phillip Bailey all sing on the record! Titles include "One To One", "As Little As You", "Scapegoat", "Show Us The Way", "Tales Of Barcelona", and the future soul classic "Love's The Way I Feel 'Bout Cha". Spellbound is a soulfully spacey fusion set from Alphonso Johnson – with a really catchy sound! The maestro is working in an eclectic mode that's part Earth, Wind, & Fire, part Return To Forever, and part Alphonze Mouzon/Tommy Bolin jamming. The best moments on the record are the more straight ahead ones – which really flirt with chunky rock sounds on the other side of the rubbery fusion funkiness! Mouzon's working on all kinds of electric sounds on this one – a bunch of custom bass effects, steel drums and more – with Clyde Criner working with a long list of keys and synthesizers, Kevin Shireve on guitar and David Igelfeld on drums and percussion. Titles include "Face Blaster", "Summer Solstice", "Bahama Mama", "Nomads", and Moonlight Conversation" "Feelings Are. . .The Hardest Words To Say" and "Earthtales Suite". (Jazz, Soul) CD

A killer for the Joneses – probably their strongest album all the way through, thanks to some great production and arrangements by Bobby Eli! This one's got the group taking the fragile harmony style of their earlier records, and filtering it through the Philly powerhouse groove to create a stronger, more high-stepping sound. Probably the biggest album ever from the brother/sister team of Katreese and Jerry Barnes – working here as Juicy, in a sweet smooth 80s groove style that's mighty nice! Deodato produced the album, and it's similar to some of the other soul material he was handling in the 80s – slick and sparkling, but with a sweet jazzy touch that keeps things a lot more real than on other soul albums from the time. The Barnes siblings handle all vocals and instruments – and the record has a sweet poppy duet style that's perhaps a bit dated, but also kind of due for a revival. Features the group's great slow jam hit "Sugar Free", with lots of excellent bass pedal jamming – plus "Stay With Me", "Slow Dancing", "It Takes Two", and "Nobody But You". LP, Vinyl record album

A real classic from the great Patti Labelle – one of the lady's first few albums as a solo act, and a set that definitely marks her step forward into a whole new sort of sophisticated soul! Some of the funkier, grittier touches of the Labelle years are in place – but Patti's also got this new sort of lead confidence, especially on the album's fuller tracks, ballads, and midtempo steppers. At a time when so many other female singers were stepping right into disco with a style that Labelle helped to invent, Patti finds a whole new way to express herself and stand strong for years to come. Webster Lewis takes off wonderfully here – finding a completely unique groove that's equal parts club, soul, and fusion! The album's almost as sublime as Roy Ayers' best from the time – and has a similar balance that's perfectly done – a depth of thought that goes way beyond conventional club, and a willingness to bring in lots more complicated elements from various jazz sources. Webster's keyboards are nicely out front in the set – and there's some great vocals by a female chorus who sweeten up the sound nicely, but not in ways that are too commercial or cliched. The whole thing's great – a righteous masterpiece through and through – and tracks include "Hideaway", "There's A Happy Feeling", "Touch My Love", "Believe In Yourself", "Barbara Ann", and "Loving". Epic/Luaka Bop, 1974. Used ... $5.99
An insanely wonderful album! Shuggie Otis is the son of Johnny Otis – the LA R&B maestro who was moving heavily into funk at the end of the 60s – and he has this tripped out, super-dope guitar style that he played to strong effect on Johnny's albums of the late 60s and early 70s, and on his first two solo albums, which were kind of bluesy in tone. For this album, though, he shocked the world by moving into a stripped-down mode that pairs his guitar with spare drum machine rhythms, flanged-out deeply soulful vocals, and one of the most laidback conceptions of funk you'll ever hear. The album's a landmark – one of those gems that's unlike anything else you can think of, but which will redefine your concept of what you want in a record for years to come. Every track's a winner – and the whole thing's a perfectly unified batch of tunes that includes instant classics like "Inspiration Information", "Island Letter", "Aht Uh Mi Hed", "XL 30", and "Rainy Day". Plus, this reissue features 4 tracks from Shuggie's Freedom Flight LP – including his original version of "Strawberry Letter 23", and "Sweet Thang", "Freedom Flight", and "Ice Cold Daydream". CD

Epic, 2002. Used ... $4.99
A sweet little live set by Sade – done with the subdued warmth of her later work, but also featuring a few key songs from earlier years! There's a nicely understated quality to the record, in keeping with Sade's own presence – and we're quite pleased to hear how these songs hold up away from the studio. Titles include "Smooth Operator", "Jezebel", "Cherish The Day", "No Ordinary Love", "Flow", "Is It A Crime", "Kiss Of Life", "Slave Song", and "The Sweetest Taboo". CD

✨✧ Jill ScottWho Is Jill Scott? ... CD
Epic/Hidden Beach, 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
Get ready to discover a fantastic new soul music talent! Jill Scott's the best thing we've heard in years – and she's a perfect example of the killer NuSoul trends that have been forged in the past few years by artists like D'Angelo, Mshell N'degocello, or N'Dambe (but Jill doesn't have an apostrophe mark in her name!) The record's a totally seductive blend of warm instrumentation, subdued funky beats, and immensely captivating soul vocals. The whole thing's awash in Fender Rhodes, giving it a spacey soul sound that will make the record a classic for years to come! Titles include "The Way", "Do You Remember", "Long Rain", "Love Rain", "Honey Molasses", "Slowly Surely", "Watching Me", and "He Loves Me" – but it's allllll good! (Neo Soul, Soul) CD

✨✧ Charlie Singleton & Modern ManNothing Ventured, Nothing Gained ... CD
Epic, 1987. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Late 80s boogie funk from Cameo guitarist and keyboardist Charlie Singleton & Modern Man, though Charlie himself may very well be Modern Man, as he also wrote and produced the record – with all star assistance from his Cameo partners, Peabo Bryson and others! Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained is his first for Epic, in a similar pop funk mode as Cameo's work of the time, though a bit leane and with Charlie's personal touches right out front. Thumping programming, some electro touches and some some blazing guitar by Charlie when the mood strikes! Includes "I Wanna Be With You", and 80s groove cover of "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)", "Spending Money", "Over My Head" with Peabo and a nice bit of sax, "Love Machine", "Vain", "Almost Over You" and more. ✨✧ Sly & The Family StoneFresh ... LP
Epic, 1973. Very Good Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Sly's leaping into the air on the cover of this one – and for good reason too, given the overall groove of the set! The album's a bit more stripped-down and upbeat than the previous few – almost more of a return to the simple funky style of the first albums, but with a slightly more electric sound than before – especially in the keyboards, which almost slide into the mix here with a Stevie Wonder-like quality. The electricity bubbles and brews wonderfully at the bottom of the rhythms – charging things up a bit, but still hanging back with a super-cool, laidback quality that few other groups could muster! There's a great sense of balance here that's brilliant – and which makes the album one of Sly's undisputed masterpieces from the Columbia years. Titles include the incredible "If You Want Me To Stay" – one of our favorite Sly Stone cuts ever – plus "Keep on Dancin", "Babies Making Babies", "Que Sera Sera", "If It Were Left Up To Me", "In Time", and "Let Me Have It All". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sly & The Family StoneSmall Talk ... LP
Epic, 1974. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sly's still doing pretty nice for himself in 1974 – with a sound that's perhaps a bit warmer than on the early records, but still nice and soulful – and peppered with a good dose of funk! The groove is really great on the set – bubbling with a more "deep down" feel than the skittish funk of the first few records, and breaking out on some great soul numbers that show Sly to be an even better singer than before – touchingly sensitive at times, in a really beautiful way! Titles include "Loose Booty", which has a wonderful popping bass/hollow drum sound, and a tasty break in the middle – plus the cuts "This Is Love", "Wishful Thinkin", "Time For Livin", "Can't Strain My Brain", and "Say You Will". Sly & The Family StoneThere's A Riot Goin' On ... LP
Epic, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $24.99
A wonderful album from Sly and crew – moving way past the straight funk approach of earlier records, into a complicated crossover soul style that's filled with warmth and righteousness. Despite the political tone implied by the "riot" in the title and the co-option of the American flag on the cover, the album's strongest suit is its warmth and personal soul message – sometimes filled with politics, sure, but always sounding like a sexy love song, no matter how hard it tries to get righteous. Who cares, though – just get with the flow on great cuts like "Family Affair", "Luv N Haight", "Brave & Strong", "You Caught Me Smilin", and "Thank You For Talkin To Me Africa". Also features "There's A Riot Goin' On" – which runs for "0:00" minutes! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Smoke CityI Really Want You ... CD
Epic/FTG, 1985. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A damn great bit of 80s soul – the only album ever issued by Smoke City, but a killer set that we've loved for many years – especially given the group's link to the Chicago scene! The set's perfectly put together – head and shoulders above so much other major label soul of the time – with a mature, sophisticated groove that's really wonderful – almost an extension of the styles explored by Philly International at the start of the 80s, taken forward at a time when so many others were amping up their drum machines and going for too-commercial riffs in their grooves. The vocals alternate nicely between lead male singer Daveon Overton and female singer Starr – and the album also alternates between 80s groove, quiet storm numbers, and even a few slyly jazzy numbers that are perfect for the hipper side of the mainstream soul spectrum at the time. Titles include "Dreams", "Life Of the Party", "Time To Jam", "Back Seat Kind Of Girl", "In The World Of Fantasy", and "Cafe Francois". CD

Sly & The Family StoneSmall Talk/High On You/Heard Ya Missed Me Well I'm Back ... CD
Epic/BGO (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
A trio of second-period Sly Stone albums – all brought together in a single CD set! On Small Talk, Sly's still doing pretty nice for himself in 1974 – with a sound that's perhaps a bit warmer than on the early records, but still nice and soulful – and peppered with a good dose of funk! High On You is a nice little mid 70s set from Sly – one recorded without the Family Stone, but still grooving wonderfully with lots of funky edges! Sly's expanded his sound nicely here – pushing past the shorter funk of earlier years to work in some complicated instrumentation that keeps things really sounding fresh. Great examples of this are the frenetic horn bits on "Crossword", which you'll recognize from its famous Tribe Called Quest sample – or the sweeping strings on the mellow groover "That's Lovin You". The whole thing's great – and other tracks include "I Get High on You", "So Good to Me", "Le Lo Li", "Green Eyed Monster Girl", and "Organize". On Heard Ya Missed Me, Sly Stone's looking like a one-man band on the cover, but the album's definitely got the full-on collaborative vibe of his early records with the Family Stone! The main man himself has plenty of charm, and still has that wonderful ear for a sharp-tinged funky cut – but he's also working in this mode that allows for other voices to come into the mix at times, and plenty of lively funky instrumentation underneath the lyrics – which really makes the whole thing feel like a party all the way through! Titles include "Sexy Situation", "What Was I Thinkin In My Head", "Mother Is A Hippie", and "Family Again". CD

Epic, 1978. Very Good+ ... $3.99
Surprisingly nice funky disco work from Joe Tex – still recording here with classic producer Buddy Killen, but using some warmer arrangements from Bergen White, done in a sweet Nashville take on the 70s sound of Philly! The backings are large, with strings over some electric rhythms – but Joe's proud, warm, and raspy vocals still come through beautifully – stepping out with some funky touches on even the mellower cuts, and still keeping a very strong "Gotcha" groove in the mix. Includes the great monologue track "Be Kind To Old People", plus "You Might Be Digging The Garden", "Rub Down", "You Can Be My Star", "Congratulations", "I Know You You Like Your Lovin", "I Gotcha", and "Get Back Leroy". Betty WrightWright Back At You ... LP
Epic, 1983. Very Good+ ... $3.99
Betty Wright looks a lot different on the cover than during her early Alston Records years – and she sounds a lot different here, too – but in a way that really has the soul singer stretching out her wings! Most of the record was handled by Marlon Jackson – of Jacksons fame – and the sound is a mix of smooth modern soul groovers and a few more upbeat numbers that really push Wright's vocals in a great way! A few numbers here are definitely hitting that crossover mode that CBS was using with Denise Williams, Cheryl Lynn, and a few of its other soul singers at the time – but the best numbers are deeper, more mellow, and have a warmly sophisticated mode that really gets Betty past the rougher moments of her youth, and takes her into a more adult territory that we really like. These tracks include "Special Love", "I Promise You", "Show Me", and "She's Older Now" – alongside other numbers that include "Burning Desire", "Be Your Friend", and "Live Love Rejoice".
