✨✧ Melba MooreMelba (Epic) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/Sony (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Melba Moore gets some great help here from the Philly soul duo of McFadden & Whitehead – whose soaring styles proves to be a perfect fit for her amazing voice! Melba had cut some great work before this set, but here things really seem to come together – her amazing range, her ability to be expressive without going over the top, and her maturing role as a soul singer – which would take her to great territory in years to come! There's almost an indie soul vibe to the record at times – never too overtly commercial, and sophisticated but not hitting you over the head either – on titles that include "You Stepped Into My Life", "Happy", "Pick Me Up I'll Dance", "There's No Other Like You", "Together Forever", and "It's Hard Not To Like You". CD features bonus tracks – "You Stepped Into My Life (7" mix)" and "Pick Me Up I'll Dance (12" mix)". CD

✨✧ Vivian ReedYours Until Tomorrow – The Epic Years ... CD
Columbia/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at the early work of Vivian Reed – a singer who got the chance to release a handful of full length albums in the disco generation, but one who sounds even better here right at the start of her career! The beautiful package brings together rare single sides and LP tracks that Vivian cut for Epic Records in the late 60s and early 70s – music that has the vocalist really hitting the full, deep range of her talents – in settings that maybe begin with familiar uptown soul modes, but soon step off into some even more righteous territory! A range of top-shelf talents help Reed out in the studio – as the cuts feature arrangements by Van McCoy, Jimmy Wisner, Thom Bell, Bobby Martin, and Herb Bernstein – all of whom really find a way to unlock Vivian's vocals and really let them soar. Even the familiar tunes take on a new sort of vibe here – great soulful readings that are quite different than the originals – on titles that include "Missing You", "Shape Of Things To Come", "Don't Close The Door On Me", "I Feel The Earth Move", "Lean On Me", "Mama Open The Door", "Baby Baby", "I", "Yours Until Tomorrow", "I Wanna Be Free", "Look The Other Way", "Down Here On The Ground", "Walk On My Side", and "Then I'll Be Over You". ✨✧ Staple SingersFor What It's Worth – The Complete Epic Recordings 1964 to 1968 (Amen/Pray On/Freedom Highway/Why/For What It's Worth/What The World Needs Now) (3CD set) ... CD
Epic/Soulmusic.com (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing early work from The Staple Singers – six records that are quite different than their later fame on Stax Records during the 70s – and which have a vibe that's different too, yet equally powerful! There's a sublime mix of social politics and spiritual energy going on here – as the quartet are already moving far past standard gospel modes, and mixing their faith with a strong message during these key years of the Civil Rights era – really bridging divides with the music on these albums. The music has that sublime blend that the group perfected right from the start – almost a secret inclusion of a larger social agenda, presented amidst gospel tunes re-arranged by Pops Staples – plus some of his own great tracks too – able to reach across the aisle, and bring so many new ears to the messages the group was putting forth. The box set features six full albums – some never reissued since the LP era – Amen, Pray On, "Why, "For What It's Worth, What The World Needs Now Is Love, and the great live album Freedom Highway – recorded in Chicago! Carl AndersonOn & On ... LP
Epic, 1984. Near Mint- ... $7.99
A sweet second set from 80s singer Carl Anderson – a date that's got poise, class, and a heck of a lot of soul! Although a mainstream effort, there's a nice sort of depth to the record – one that shows that Columbia wasn't pitching Anderson as much towards a crossover artist as they were some of their other mid 80s acts – instead, letting him really hang back and do his own thing – in a warmly-swinging mode that still holds up beautifully over the years! The record's a real standout in 80s mainstream male soul – and thanks is certainly due to producer/arrangers John Skip Anderson and Steve Williams, who carefully avoid the commercial side of the spectrum. Titles include "Don't Make Me Wait", "Try", "Keep It Alive", "On & On", "Lately", and "Time To Win". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Chocolate Jam CoSpread Of The Future ... LP
Epic, 1979. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A funky fusion classic from the 70s – totally great work from Chocolate Jam Company, a hip little group headed up by percussionist Leon Ndugu Chancler! The core sound is soul, but there's plenty of fusion touches as well – thanks to a great lineup of players that includes Oscar Brashear on trumpet, George Duke on keyboards, David T Walker on guitar, and even Dorothy Ashby on harp! Chancler sings lead vocals on most cuts – but he's also joined by Virginia Ayers and Leo Mille on some cuts too – making for a really well-rounded sound that's easily one of the best jazz-into-soul sessions like this from the 70s – almost topping the more famous work from folks like Lenny White or Mtume! Titles include "Don't Leave Me Now Stay With Me", "Feeling", "This Time", "Looking Glass", and the extended "Suite Chocolate". LP, Vinyl record album

Epic, 1980. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Killer work from Stanley Clarke – a set to start off the 80s, but still very much in that unique blend of jazz, rock, and soul he forged so well in the 70s! The set begins with really heavy drums and bass – nicely propelled, but never too strong or too jamming – a great balance that really sets the pace well for the record as Clarke and the combo pulsate through a range of nice little numbers – often linked with a cool motorcycle sound effect! There's a few 80s touches, mostly in the keyboards, but these are never too modern – and all used very nicely. Titles include the extended "Story Of A Man & A Woman" suite – plus "Danger Street", "All Hell Broke Loose", "Rocks Pebbles & Sand", and "Underestimation". (Jazz, Soul) CD

Lou CourtneyI'm In Need Of Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/Soul Brother (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $14.99
A wonderful album of mellow soul tracks! The record is Lou Courtney's masterpiece – and it's a jam-packed set filled with great tracks that rank right up there with classic 70s work by artists like Marvin Gaye, Leroy Hutson, or Leon Ware! Leon Pendarvis handled most of the arrangements – and the record's got a wonderfully full soul sound – with a mix of moody keyboard-driven groovers and ballads – all topped by excellent vocals from Lou, miles ahead of any work he did in the early days! The best thing, though, is the songwriting, as these tracks rank right up there with the best underground mellow soul we can think of – sophisticated yet not soppy, filled with soulful lyrics about love and losing it, never giving into cliches of other soul from the time. A real dream of an album – and filled with great tracks like "I Will If You Will", "I'm In Need Of Love", "Just To Let Him Break Your Heart", "Somebody New Is Loving On You", and "The Common Broken Heart" – plus with the bonus cuts "Beware" and "Why". George DukeMaster Of The Game ... CD
Epic, 1979. Used ... $6.99
A late 70s classic from jazzy funk master George Duke! Master Of The Game is an excellent mix of jazz, smooth soul, and Latin riffing – really a perfect blend of styles that shows not only how far George's sound had progressed throughout the 70s, it also charts the development of the California scene during the late 70s. George has musical help from Ray Obeido, Roland Bautista, and Sheila E – plus vocals by Lynn Davis, Josie James, and Napoleon Brock. The tracks have a smooth sound that works perfectly with Duke's best keyboard approaches – subduing his tenency to "rock out" a bit, but bringing forward his classic ability to hit a stone mellow groove. Titles include "I Want You For Myself", "Every Little Step I Take", "Look What You Find", "I Love You More", "Dog Man", and "Games". (Jazz, Soul) CD

Bouncy, beat-heavy soul from Five Star – really stepping out strongly on this self-titled set! The music's nothing new, and very familiar to fans of mainstream soul at the time – but the group really serve things up with a stronger edge than on previous releases – handling much of the production and songwriting themselves, often with a catchy, hook-heavy style that reminds us a lot of projects from the Jackson family around the same time. Titles include "Treat Me Like A Lady", "I Can Show You Love", "Hot Love", "Feel Much Better", "I'm Still Waiting", "Don't Stop", and "Lost In You". 2CD set features lots of bonus tracks – including "Act One (7" version)", and a whopping four mixes of "Hot Love", and eleven more mixes of "Treat Me Like A Lady". An unlikely contender to the throne of king of electro, this early 80s effort from Eddie Grant helps to prop him up there quite nicely. Heavy synth driven grooves bubble along nicely with that crisp Linn Drum sound, and though this album benefited from some wider pop appeal, there's more than a bit of Eddie's reggae side showing through too! Epic/Get On Down, 1995. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $26.99 30.98
The only album ever from Groove Theory – but the set that introduced the world to Amel Larrieux – whose vocal talents alone are worth the price of admission! The feel here is a bit more mainstream soul than some of Amel's later work – but given the mid 90s date of release, the sound is still plenty underground – and filled with the warmer tones and deeper soul styles that wouldn't be that common until years later when the Neo Soul scene rose to prominence. The overall package is the work of former Mantronix member Bryce Wilson – who plays some keys, and ensures that the rhythms are never too bombastic to overwhelm Amel's vocals. Titles include the massive stepper's cut "Tell Me" that hit huge here in Chicago – plus "Baby Luv", "Didja Know", "Come Home", "Hello It's Me", "Hey U", "Good 2 Me", "You're Not The 1", and "Boy At The Window". Killer soul from Heatwave – a tight little group who definitely made the UK proud at the end of the 70s! The album's a bit more obscure than the group's first few, but the sound is very much the same – a warmly grooving approach that's neither too disco, nor too sleepy – always catchy on the hooks, and recorded with a nicely flanged style on the vocals – so that they're compressed a bit, and slide nicely in alongside the beats and keys! The mighty Rod Tempterton's still handling a good deal of the arrangements on the set, and some of the backings are orchestrated by Johnny Cameron – almost in a late 70s update of his earlier funky style. Titles include the funky cut "Gangsters Of The Groove", plus "All I Am", "Dreamin You", "Party Suite", "Posin Til Closin", "Turn Around", and "Where Did I Go Wrong", a sweet little ballad. Epic, 1976. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
A killer album of crossover soul from the mid 70s – one that dropped like a bomb when it hit, and gave this UK group a number of big hits in America! Keyboardist Rod Temperton wrote all the tracks on the album – and he's got keen talent for both funky numbers and ballads. If soul stations played album side specials the way that classic rock stations do, side one would be in heavy rotation – as it kicks off with the funky title cut, rolls into the hit "Boogie Nights", cuts to the sample classic "Ain't No Half Steppin" (forever made famous by Big Daddy Kane), and steps into the moody ballad "Always & Forever". It's hard to beat that lineup, but side two does a pretty good job – and includes a similar mix of titles like "Super Soul Sister", "All You Do Is Dial", and "Sho'nuff Must Be Love". CD

Some of Bobbi Humphrey's greatest work of the post-Blue Note years – an album that's filled with soulful fusion tunes throughout, all with a great focus on her funky flute! Bobbi also sings a bit on the set, but in a way that's pretty darn great – wonderfully sweet at times, with a bit of an influence from Minnie Riperton that really warms up the set. Arrangements are by Cleveland Eaton, with a bit of help from Art Jenkins – and production is by Ralph MacDonald, who clearly has a great ear for the blend of jazz and soul that Bobbi's going for on the set. And although Larry Mizell's not on board, some of the cuts here still have that stepping/sliding sort of groove from Bobby's Mizell-produced Blue Note years – a really wonderful sound that's a perfect showcase for her uniquely jazzy talents on the flute! Tracks include "Freestyle", "Home Made Jam", "Sunset Burgundy", "Good Times", "My Destiny", "I Could Love You More", and "If You Want It". (Jazz, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

Although the Isley Brothers seem to be best remembered for their funky work of the 70s – which shows up again and again on compilations and soundtracks of music from the time – we've always equally loved their way with a ballad, as the group had a really sweet sound when they wanted to, perfectly formed for more intimate numbers, which they always still managed to deliver with a slight bit of rhythm under the mix. The set features mostly tracks from their glory years of the 70s – including "Hello It's Me", "Choosey Lover", "Make Me Say It Again Girl (parts 1 & 2)", "All In My Lover's Eyes", "Don't Say Goodnight (It's Time For Love) (parts 1 & 2)", and "You're The Key To My Heart" – but it also features the big 80s quiet storm hit "Caravan Of Love", which was performed by the Isley Jasper Isley team. 14 tracks in all. A great mix of heavy funk and sweeter ballads from the Isley Brothers – and a record that's filled with two-part tracks that really let them stretch out and groove! The tunes have a bit more bass and keyboards than before – an approach that's even more electric than Isley funk of a few years back, and which steps out in some tightly vamping rhythms that still crackle with plenty of warmth and soul – especially on the mellower numbers, which dominate side two of the record, and really make this one worth having! Mellow tracks include "For The Love Of You (parts 1 & 2)", "Sensuality (parts 1 & 2)", and "Make Me Say It Again (parts 1 & 2)" – and funkier numbers include "Fight The Power (parts 1 & 2)", "The Heat Is On (parts 1 & 2)", and "Hope You Feel Better Love (parts 1 & 2)". Mellow Isleys galore – that great side of the group's talents in the 70s! Although the Isley Brothers were always known for hitting a funky groove when they could, they were almost even better at mellower cuts – laidback numbers that let the group really work things over carefully, and open up with a soulful vibe that few of their contemporaries could match! Most of these tunes still have the guitar you'd know from the funky cuts – but it's played in a stretched-out way that's totally great – slinking in between the vocals and rhythms in a really wonderful way, almost making for an undercurrent of funk at points. Titles include "Hello It's Me", "Voyage To Atlantis", "For The Love Of You (parts 1 & 2)", "Groove With You", "Sensuality (parts 1 & 2)", "Footsteps In The Dark (parts 1 & 2)", "Between The Sheets", "I Once Had Your Love", "Hello It's Me", and "You Are Love". The rhythms and production are more contemporary than some of Jackson's classics, but that also maybe gives the whole thing a crackle that keeps it interesting too – partly because so many of these songs were a bit under-discovered when the set was released. The song titles themselves give some idea of where Jackson's headspace was at during the creation of the album – and tracks include "Invincible", "Break Of Dawn", "Butterflies", "Threatened", "Heaven Can Wait", "2000 Watts", "Cry", "The Lost Children", "Unbreakable", "Heartbreaker", "Whatever Happens", "Privacy", and "Don't Walk Away". Michael, if only you'd stayed at this level! This 1979 solo album by Michael is a killer batch of soul grooves – one of his best moments ever, and a crowning cap to a stellar 70s run – both as a younger solo act, and with the whole Jackson family! Quincy Jones produced, and the album's got a funky undercurrent that's really stunning – clubby, yet plenty darn soulful, with a wickedly sly groove that others would try to copy for years, but never fully match. Titles include seminal groovers like "Rock With You", "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough", "Working Day And Night", "Girlfriend", "Off The Wall", "Burn This Disco Out" and more. Arguably the last true moment of genius in Michael Jackson's career – a record that sold a bazillion copies around the world – and for plenty good reason! Michael's still working here with Quincy Jones – in territory that steps nicely from the Off The Wall groove, into territory that's somewhat more poppy, but still quite soulful overall. And yes, the success of the album meant that cuts like "Billie Jean", "Thriller", and "Beat It" got plenty of play – thanks to both heavy radio and video rotation – but a few decades later, there's still a tremendous amount of depth here – on great cuts like "Human Nature", "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin", and "PYT" – which all hold up nicely! A heavy groove and a heady title that points the way towards Michael Jackson's soon-to-be legendary solo career – all served up in a batch of tracks that resonate nicely with the Off The Wall groove! The sound here really isn't disco or club, but it's a nicely upbeat groove that shows The Jacksons at the top of their game – tightly stepping and often highly rhythmic – and striking a great balance between strong lead vocals and some of the sweeter harmonies that got them going in the past. Titles include the sublime groovers "Blame It On The Boogie" and "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)", plus great sleepers like "All Night Dancin", "Bless His Soul", "Things I Do For You" and "That's What You Get For Being Polite". A great mix of the talents of Michael Jackson and his famous brothers – and a set that's probably got an equal weight on the focus of both! There's a fair bit of Off The Wall-era Michael that informs this set – the kind of upbeat, grooving tracks that made that record so great – mixed with some newer takes on older Jacksons material, often revamped a bit with a slightly modern soul groove! There's a nice sort of liveness to the record – not as too-polished as you might imagine – and titles include "Can You Feel It", "Off The Wall", "Heartbreak Hotel", "She's Out Of My life", "ABC", "I Want You Back", "I'll Be There", "Rock With You", "Working Day & Night", "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough", and "Shake Your Body Down To The Ground". Michael Jackson's last album with his famous family – a set of electric 80s soul that's a bit different than Jackson's well-known solo work! In a way, the later Jacksons albums almost feel like a place where Michael can try out some ideas that don't fit as tightly into the overall sound of his own records – and there's definitely more diversity here than before – a shift between gentle ballads, beat-heavy tunes, and even a few rockish/poppish moments. Of course, we should probably be crediting the other Jacksons for their help in the sound here too – as they're certainly credited on the cover – but there's also less of the "many parts as one" sound than before, so it's hard to tell how they're working together. Titles include "The Hurt", "Wait", "Torture", "One More Chance", "Body", "We Can Change The World", and "State Of Shock", the big single, which features a guest appearance by Mick Jagger. CD

A great run of records from Alphonso Johnson – the best of his career, wrapped up here in one sweet set! First up is Moonshadows – one of the earliest of bassist Alphonso Johnson's funky fusion albums for Epic! Moonshadows is a nice little set of choppy grooves that recalls the best Herbie Hancock moments of the early 70s, plus some of the side projects of the Headhunters. Warmly funky, but with a nice edge – with a more jazz funk rooted sound than the later, slightly heavier Spellbound! The great group of players includes Patrice Rushen is on keyboards, Benny Maupin on reeds, Lee Ritenour on guitars, Airto Moriera on percussion, Gary Bartz on sax, plus Narada Michael Walden and Ndugu Chancler on drums. Tracks include "Stump", "Cosmoba Place", "Involuntary Bliss", "On The Case", "Amarteifio", "Pandora's Box" and the breezy "Up From The Cellar", which features vocals by Flora Purim! Yesterday's Dreams is a killer all-star session of funky fusion tracks – with a nice tight sound produced by Skip Drinkwater! Yesterday's Dreams differs a little from Alphonso's other strong mid 70s efforts in that it's not as spacey as a whole – but the rubbery, cleanly funky grooves are just as strong – and the record as a whole makes for more of a showcase for his excellent group of players! Bassist Johnson leads the session, but there's a huge amount of guests, such as Grover Washington, Patrice Rushen, Mike Clark, and Sheila Escovedo. Plus, Jon Lucien, Diane Reeves, Flora Purim, and Phillip Bailey all sing on the record! Titles include "One To One", "As Little As You", "Scapegoat", "Show Us The Way", "Tales Of Barcelona", and the future soul classic "Love's The Way I Feel 'Bout Cha". Spellbound is a soulfully spacey fusion set from Alphonso Johnson – with a really catchy sound! The maestro is working in an eclectic mode that's part Earth, Wind, & Fire, part Return To Forever, and part Alphonze Mouzon/Tommy Bolin jamming. The best moments on the record are the more straight ahead ones – which really flirt with chunky rock sounds on the other side of the rubbery fusion funkiness! Mouzon's working on all kinds of electric sounds on this one – a bunch of custom bass effects, steel drums and more – with Clyde Criner working with a long list of keys and synthesizers, Kevin Shireve on guitar and David Igelfeld on drums and percussion. Titles include "Face Blaster", "Summer Solstice", "Bahama Mama", "Nomads", and Moonlight Conversation" "Feelings Are. . .The Hardest Words To Say" and "Earthtales Suite". (Jazz, Soul) CD

Epic, 1986. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Poppy passion from Krystol – a sweet 80s trio with a definite way with a hook! The set's got a well-balanced mainstream sound – one that helps the vocals find a fullness right away, either on the leads or harmonies – both woven together over the top of the tight, beat-heavy grooves! At points, there's almost a retro vibe – as if an older girl trio mode's being revived for a new 80s scene – but with a definite contemporary spin. There's a decidedly commercial appeal to the sound – but Krystol were also never too overplayed back in the day, which makes the album a nice discovery – and a great surprise when you start digging through all the potential singles on the set. Tracks include "Love Attack", "Passion From A Woman", "He's So Jive", "Baby Make Up Your Mind", "Scared Single", and "Precious Precious". LP, Vinyl record album

Bumping, bouncing soul from Krystol – one of the strongest female groups of the 80s, and one of the few who really helped push the sound further at the time! The groove here is equal parts funk and soul – and has a brashness that a girl act wouldn't have had a decade before – lots of echoes of new rhythms learned from the streets, fused with top-shelf production that helps send the whole thing home strongly! The style is tight, yet never clunky commercial – and Leon Sylvers' production really helps keep a lean quality to most of the tracks. And sure, the costumes on the cover look a bit silly, but the vocals have a lot more depth than you might expect! Titles include "Love Is Like An Itchin In My Heart", "C'Est La Vie", "I Want A Man Who Can Dance", "Hard To Believe", "The Things That Men Do", "Talk Of The Town", and "Shattered Glass". A real standout in the early solo years of Patti Labelle – and a great set that reunites the singer with New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint – who'd previously worked some magic with Patti and the Labelle trio! Toussaint really grounds Patti's vocals wonderfully – giving them a solid footing that moves past the pop and disco of previous records, but which also doesn't just resort to New Orleans cliches, either. Either Toussaint or Labelle wrote most of the songs on the record – and together, they find a fresh batch of material that really helps establish the singers as one of the greatest female voices in soul. The whole album's a classic – well-balanced between mellow and upbeat numbers – and titles include "Find The Love", "Get Ready", "Give It Up", "Release", "I Don't Go Shopping", "Ain't That Enough", and "Don't Make Your Angel Cry". Some of the funkier, grittier touches of the Labelle years are in place – but Patti's also got this new sort of lead confidence, especially on the album's fuller tracks, ballads, and midtempo steppers. At a time when so many other female singers were stepping right into disco with a style that Labelle helped to invent, Patti finds a whole new way to express herself and stand strong for years to come. Genius jazzy soul from Webster Lewis – one of his amazing late 70s sets for Epic Records! By this point in his career, Lewis had honed his keyboard craft to perfection – and on albums like this one, he laid down some excellent smooth soulful fusion that soared in a righteous way that few other artists of his generation could match! The sound's never cheesy, and has a wonderfully fusion-based bottom that's served up by a range of great players that include Paul Jackson, James Gadson, and Bennie Maupin – and which is topped off by very jazz-sensitive production from Lewis and Herbie Hancock. Most cuts have vocals – some by Lewis himself – and the album includes the monster dancefloor cut "Give Me Some Emotion", plus the cuts "Fire", "Go For It", "You Deserve To Dance", and "The Love You Give To Me". A jazzy soul masterpiece from Webster Lewis – light years away from the rougher funk he cut at the start of the 70s! The album's beautifully put together – almost perfect at all points, at a level that we'd rank right up there with the best work by Leroy Hutson, Roy Ayers, or other contemporary maestros in the studio. Unlike some of the more commercial artists of his generation – who also came to soul through jazz – Webster doesn't push the hooks too hard, nor try too much for a hit. And instead, he's more than happy to stay in his own righteous space – with a sound that's smooth, but never slick – tight, but not uptight. He's got some great help on the record – including keyboards from Herbie Hancock and Skip Scarborough, guitar from David T Walker, and percussion from Willie Bobo – all of whom keep things cool. Vocals are handled by a number of singers, including Webster himself – and titles include "Bout The Love", "Let Me Be The One", "Love Won't Harm No One", "El Bobo", "Kemo Kemo", "A Quiet Thing", and "Flying High". Melba Moore is on fire here – eschewing ballads altogether for the first time – and lighting up a scorching late disco vibe! Burn is a tight, club-ready soul set from '79 that finds Melba with more input on the songwriting than she had on previous records. It's also a nice step in a slightly different direction, working here with producer Pete Bellotte – one of the creative engines that drove disco deeply into the mainstream! What's great, though, is that Melba is right up there sharing the driver's seat – she's not just the voice – she co-wrote each track on the album. That said, it's her voice that burns the most brightly, on songs that include "Burn", "Hot And Tasty", "If You Believe In Love", "Night People", "I Don't Wanna Lose Your Love", "Can't Give It Up", "Miss Thing" and "Need Love". 3 bonus tracks on this FTG CD edition: "Miss Thing (7" Version)", "Hot And Tasty (7" Version)" and "Burn (7" Version)". In our minds, this was easily as strong a cut, and though it did well, it never seemed to break like "Juicy Fruit", which we still hear in "old school" mixes today. The tracks on the flip are just different mixes of the a-side. 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Johnny NashI Can See Clearly Now (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/Big Break (UK), 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massive crossover from Johnny Nash – a record that gave the 70s the chart-topping title hit, and which helped Johnny mix his Caribbean roots with contemporary soul! The set's a huge change from the sometimes-faltering styles Nash had tried in the 60s – often a bit more mainstream than he was able to do well, which is why the deeply personal approach of this album's such a striking contrast. Nash arranged and produced himself, and really hits a vibe here that stands out even from his other 70s recordings – beautifully balanced, on titles that include "Comma Comma", "Guava Jelly", "Stir It Up", "I Can See Clearly Now", "We're All Alike", "How Good It Is", "Cream Puff", and "You Poured Sugar On Me". Includes two bonus tracks "Cream Puff" & "Stir It Up (single mix)". CD

✨✧ Billy OceanNights (Feel Like Getting Down) ... CD
Epic, 1981. Used ... $5.99
One of those bright, charismatic Billy Ocean records from a couple years before his massive pop soul crossover – just a sublime 80s club groover that pumps along at a nice mid tempo clip – a real favorite around these parts! This was Billy's debut for Epic and there's plenty of signposts here of his potential to bust out in a big way commercially – it's hooky and insistent, but still plenty soulful, less steeped in pop gloss and with fewer ballads – lean, danceable soul that holds up very, very well. Also includes "Stay The Night", "Are You Ready", "Whatever Turns You On", "Don't Say Stop", "Another Day Won't Matter", and "Taking Chances". CD

✨✧ Shuggie OtisFreedom Flight (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Epic, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
The second album from Shuggie Otis – a wild and wooly batch of grooves that really stretches out the sound from the first! Shuggie's got much more of a hand in the arrangements here – and the tunes are grooving in a sweet blend of funk, rock, and soul – really drenched in the best cross-cultural influences going down on the west coast scene of the time – a kind of color-blind quest for the groove that comes across with a really righteous power! Tracks include the original version of "Strawberry Letter 23" – plus the cuts "Ice Cold Daydream", "Freedom Flight", "Sweet Thang", "Purple", and "Me & My Woman". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Minnie RipertonAdventures In Paradise ... LP
Epic, 1975. Very Good ... $19.99
Maybe our favorite-ever album from Minnie Riperton during the 70s – a sweet, smooth jazzy gem that really makes some of the best use of her vocals! There's a sophistication here that's a great 70s counterpart to Minnie's earlier work with Charles Stepney – served up here in a very different style, but one that really sets Riperton apart from any of her contemporaries – in a unique blend of soul, jazz, and much deeper spirits – all handled with the sense of pride and style you'd expect from Minnie's image on the cover! All tracks were co-written by Riperton and Richard Rudolph – and a few get some great help from Leon Ware too. Titles include the massive track "Baby, This Love I Have" – a slow funk number that's be sampled many times over the years – plus the spacey tunes "Minnie's Lament", "Inside My Love", and "Alone In Brewster Bay", remade from Minnie's first LP – and the titles "Simple Things", "Feeling That Your Feeling's Right", and "Don't Let Anyone Bring You Down". ✨✧ Minnie RipertonPerfect Angel ... LP
Epic, 1974. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Minnie Riperton's first album for Epic – and the record that broke her from a hip Chicago underground artist into one of the seventies' biggest female soul stars! The record moves past the baroque soul of Minnie's early years with Rotary Connection and Charles Stepney – and hits a mix of mellow compressed LA styles and slicker funkier numbers that do the same thing for her Chicago-trained vocals that Rufus' backing did for that of Chaka Khan. Of course, it helps that she's got some superbly sensitive writing and arranging help by husband Richard Rudolph – and Stevie Wonder's definitely lurking in the background, too – not credited with production, due to contractual reasons, although he helped put most of the album together. Includes Minnie's huge crossover hit "Loving You", a perfect showcase for her beautiful 5 octave voice, plus the tracks "Our Lives", "Every Time He Comes Around", "Perfect Angel", and "Reasons". ✨✧ SadeBest Of Sade ... CD
Epic (Canada), Late 80s/Early 90s. Used ... $4.99
Has there ever been anyone as lovely as Sade? We think not – and from the time she first hit our ears in the 80s, it was the start of an instant love affair that's continued for decades! Sade really brought something new to music at the time – a return to older styles of acoustic and jazz-based instrumentation, at a time when so many soul singers were mostly working with beats, keyboards, and samples – and a breathy voice that was instantly unique, and which kept on captivating us for years of recordings. This best of collection dates from the mid 90s – and provides an excellent sampling of tracks from Sade's albums Diamond Life, Promise, Stronger Than Pride, and Love Deluxe – titles that include "No Ordinary Love", "Like A Tattoo", "Cherish The Day", "Kiss Of Life", "Your Love Is King", "Hang Onto Your Love", "Sweetest Taboo", "Is It A Crime", and "Nothing Can Come Between Us". Another nice one from Sade – perhaps not as edgey as some of her earlier work, recorded in a slightly smoother style, but still quite nice to our ears – as Sade's always been a pleasure, no matter what the setting! Epic/Hidden Beach, 2000. Used ... $2.99
Get ready to discover a fantastic new soul music talent! Jill Scott's the best thing we've heard in years – and she's a perfect example of the killer NuSoul trends that have been forged in the past few years by artists like D'Angelo, Mshell N'degocello, or N'Dambe (but Jill doesn't have an apostrophe mark in her name!) The record's a totally seductive blend of warm instrumentation, subdued funky beats, and immensely captivating soul vocals. The whole thing's awash in Fender Rhodes, giving it a spacey soul sound that will make the record a classic for years to come! Titles include "The Way", "Do You Remember", "Long Rain", "Love Rain", "Honey Molasses", "Slowly Surely", "Watching Me", and "He Loves Me" – but it's allllll good! (Neo Soul, Soul) CD

✨✧ Sly & The Family StoneDance To The Music (numbered limited deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
Classic funkiness from Sly & The Family Stone – an album that really pushed them to the top of their game, and exploded on the late 60s scene like a righteous funky bomb! The title cut's a mega-hit that you'll recognize right away – but the whole album's great, and is filled with the simple, joyous energy that made Sly's groove one of the freshest of his generation – and which helped foist all the great work going on in the 60s underground firmly into the light of a much wider mainstream audience. The messages are subtle here, but the group are already doing their part to change the world bit by bit – and the funky rhythms at the bottom assure that they'll be doing it ass by ass on the dancefloor! Titles include "Dance to The Music", "Ride The Rhythm", "Higher", "Don't Burn Baby", and the 12 minute "Dance To The Medley", with the groovy "Music Lover" passage! CD also features 6 bonus tracks, 4 previously unreleased – titles that include "Soul Clappin", "We Love All", "I Can't Turn You Loose", "Never Do Your Woman Wrong (inst)", and "Higher (unissued single version)". ✨✧ Sly & The Family StoneFresh ... CD
Epic, Early 70s. Used ... $3.99
Sly's leaping into the air on the cover of this one – and for good reason too, given the overall groove of the set! The album's a bit more stripped-down and upbeat than the previous few – almost more of a return to the simple funky style of the first albums, but with a slightly more electric sound than before – especially in the keyboards, which almost slide into the mix here with a Stevie Wonder-like quality. The electricity bubbles and brews wonderfully at the bottom of the rhythms – charging things up a bit, but still hanging back with a super-cool, laidback quality that few other groups could muster! There's a great sense of balance here that's brilliant – and which makes the album one of Sly's undisputed masterpieces from the Columbia years. Titles include the incredible "If You Want Me To Stay" – one of our favorite Sly Stone cuts ever – plus "Keep on Dancin", "Babies Making Babies", "Que Sera Sera", "If It Were Left Up To Me", "In Time", and "Let Me Have It All". ✨✧ Sly & The Family StoneSmall Talk (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic, 1974. Used ... $4.99
Sly's still doing pretty nice for himself in 1974 – with a sound that's perhaps a bit warmer than on the early records, but still nice and soulful – and peppered with a good dose of funk! The groove is really great on the set – bubbling with a more "deep down" feel than the skittish funk of the first few records, and breaking out on some great soul numbers that show Sly to be an even better singer than before – touchingly sensitive at times, in a really beautiful way! Titles include "Loose Booty", which has a wonderful popping bass/hollow drum sound, and a tasty break in the middle – plus the cuts "This Is Love", "Wishful Thinkin", "Time For Livin", "Can't Strain My Brain", and "Say You Will". CD also features 4 bonus tracks – an early version of "Crossword Puzzle", the instrumental "Positive", and alternate takes on "Loose Booty" and "Time For Livin". CD
