Vivian ReedYours Until Tomorrow – The Epic Years ... CD
Columbia/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
A much-needed look at the early work of Vivian Reed – a singer who got the chance to release a handful of full length albums in the disco generation, but one who sounds even better here right at the start of her career! The beautiful package brings together rare single sides and LP tracks that Vivian cut for Epic Records in the late 60s and early 70s – music that has the vocalist really hitting the full, deep range of her talents – in settings that maybe begin with familiar uptown soul modes, but soon step off into some even more righteous territory! A range of top-shelf talents help Reed out in the studio – as the cuts feature arrangements by Van McCoy, Jimmy Wisner, Thom Bell, Bobby Martin, and Herb Bernstein – all of whom really find a way to unlock Vivian's vocals and really let them soar. Even the familiar tunes take on a new sort of vibe here – great soulful readings that are quite different than the originals – on titles that include "Missing You", "Shape Of Things To Come", "Don't Close The Door On Me", "I Feel The Earth Move", "Lean On Me", "Mama Open The Door", "Baby Baby", "I", "Yours Until Tomorrow", "I Wanna Be Free", "Look The Other Way", "Down Here On The Ground", "Walk On My Side", and "Then I'll Be Over You". Staple SingersFor What It's Worth – The Complete Epic Recordings 1964 to 1968 (Amen/Pray On/Freedom Highway/Why/For What It's Worth/What The World Needs Now) (3CD set) ... CD
Epic/Soulmusic.com (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
Mindblowing early work from The Staple Singers – six records that are quite different than their later fame on Stax Records during the 70s – and which have a vibe that's different too, yet equally powerful! There's a sublime mix of social politics and spiritual energy going on here – as the quartet are already moving far past standard gospel modes, and mixing their faith with a strong message during these key years of the Civil Rights era – really bridging divides with the music on these albums. The music has that sublime blend that the group perfected right from the start – almost a secret inclusion of a larger social agenda, presented amidst gospel tunes re-arranged by Pops Staples – plus some of his own great tracks too – able to reach across the aisle, and bring so many new ears to the messages the group was putting forth. The box set features six full albums – some never reissued since the LP era – Amen, Pray On, "Why, "For What It's Worth, What The World Needs Now Is Love, and the great live album Freedom Highway – recorded in Chicago! ✨✧ BabyfaceLovers (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Solar/Epic, 1986. Used ... $8.99
The beginning of an empire! This was the first solo album cut by the now-famous Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds – cut after years of work in the music business that included stints in the groups Manchild and The Deele, and lots of production work for other LA soul acts. The record's kind of a rougher version of the modern R&B style that you'll know from Babyface's big hits of the early 90s – more in the style of some of the Solar Records acts of the early 80s, and some of the other big keyboard/bass pedal bands on the market at the time. The real contribution, though, is Kenny's ability to infuse the whole thing with soul – taking these tinny little tracks and making them come out kind of sweet, not only through his famous production, but through his faltering vocal style, which is about the most honest-sounding aspect of the record. Titles include "Lovers", "Marry Mack", "If We Try", "Take Your Time", and a cover of "You Make Me Feel Brand New". CD

Epic, 1989. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
The huge breakout album from Basia – a set that had the Polish-born singer reaching out to the well-deserved global fame that you might guess from the title! Basia works closely here with Danny White – who gives the record a London-bred blend of pop and soul – one that's a cut above more mainstream hits, with enough care to recognize the jazz currents in Basia's vocals, and her deeper range too. The vibe's a bit like the earliest Swing Out Sister material, but less jazzy overall – and titles include "Best Friends", "Not An Angel", "Copernicus", "Cruising For Bruising", "Ordinary People", "Baby You're Mine", and "Until You Come Back To Me". Chocolate Jam CoSpread Of The Future ... CD
Epic/PTG (Netherlands), 1979. New Copy ... $10.99
A funky fusion classic from the 70s – totally great work from Chocolate Jam Company, a hip little group headed up by percussionist Leon Ndugu Chancler! The core sound is soul, but there's plenty of fusion touches as well – thanks to a great lineup of players that includes Oscar Brashear on trumpet, George Duke on keyboards, David T Walker on guitar, and even Dorothy Ashby on harp! Chancler sings lead vocals on most cuts – but he's also joined by Virginia Ayers and Leo Mille on some cuts too – making for a really well-rounded sound that's easily one of the best jazz-into-soul sessions like this from the 70s – almost topping the more famous work from folks like Lenny White or Mtume! Titles include "Don't Leave Me Now Stay With Me", "Feeling", "This Time", "Looking Glass", and the extended "Suite Chocolate". CD

✨✧ Natalie ColeI'm Ready ... LP
Epic, 1983. Near Mint- ... $1.99
A great re-launch for the sound of Natalie Cole in the 80s – an album that represents a shift from Capitol Records to Epic, but which also still features work from Cole's best collaborators – the soulful team of Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy! The Chicago duo help out on most of the best tracks here – and revamp the Cole sound of the 70s with a style that's a bit leaner, and more suited to 80s soul arrangements – but which also still has a fullness that suits Natalie best! Instrumentation is never too electric or stiff, and there's a nice use of strings – in a subtle way that's never too dated, but which underscores the classier elements in Cole's approach. Stanley Clarke produced a bit on the set, too – and titles include "Too Much Mister", "I Won't Deny You", "Where's Your Angel", "I'm Your Mirror", "Straight From The Heart", "Keep It On The Outside", and "Time Heals All Wounds". Lou CourtneyI'm In Need Of Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/Soul Brother (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $16.99
A wonderful album of mellow soul tracks! The record is Lou Courtney's masterpiece – and it's a jam-packed set filled with great tracks that rank right up there with classic 70s work by artists like Marvin Gaye, Leroy Hutson, or Leon Ware! Leon Pendarvis handled most of the arrangements – and the record's got a wonderfully full soul sound – with a mix of moody keyboard-driven groovers and ballads – all topped by excellent vocals from Lou, miles ahead of any work he did in the early days! The best thing, though, is the songwriting, as these tracks rank right up there with the best underground mellow soul we can think of – sophisticated yet not soppy, filled with soulful lyrics about love and losing it, never giving into cliches of other soul from the time. A real dream of an album – and filled with great tracks like "I Will If You Will", "I'm In Need Of Love", "Just To Let Him Break Your Heart", "Somebody New Is Loving On You", and "The Common Broken Heart" – plus with the bonus cuts "Beware" and "Why". Epic, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful album from George Duke – and one of our favorite records from his legendary years at Columbia! George Duke's always had plenty of Brazilian elements in his music – but this album really brings them all together – offering up a perfect blend of Duke's keyboards and Cali soul with some key additions from the Rio scene of the time – a mix of singers and musicians who really help round out the sound and authenticate George's ears for Brazilian music! The album was actually recorded down in Rio – and features great contributions from Simone, Milton Nascimento, Roberto Silva, Toninho Horta, and Airto – all working beautifully under Duke's leadership, on cuts that include "Brazilian Love Affair", "Cravo E Canela", "Brazilian Sugar", "Sugarloaf Mountain", "Ao Que Vai Nascer", and "I Need You Now". George DukeDon't Let Go ... CD
Epic, 1978. Used ... $9.99
A sweet bit of modern funk from George Duke – working here in a mode that's definitely tighter and more soul-based than his trippier albums of the early 70s – but also in a groove that's pretty darn sweet! George wonderfully blends together his jazz roots and some of the wider soul styles he'd helped forge on the California scene – keeping things smooth, but never slick – bringing in some nice acoustic percussion alongside the album's overall electric sound. A number of cuts have vocals, and George handled both production and arrangements – on tracks that include the P-Funky "Dukey Stick", an old sample from way back – plus "Movin On", "The Future", "We Give Our Love", and "Percussion Interlude". Solid 80s grooving from George Duke – a really tightly-crafted set, done in the sweet mix of jazz and soul that he virtually helped to invent during the 70s! There's a gentle soulfulness to the record that we really like – a quality that's surprising, given the date, and the fact that so many artist like Duke were really pushing things over the top at the time – while George could still lay back, and keep things very nicely paced. Many of the tunes on the set are mellow groovers and ballads – stepping along at a sweet pace with lead vocals from Duke, and some larger backings conducted by Charles Veal. Titles include "Shine On", "You", "Dream On", "Framed", "Ride On Love", "Son Of Reach For It", and "Positive Energy". (Jazz, Soul) CD

✨✧ George DukeGuardian Of The Light ... LP
Epic, 1983. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A funky concept album from George Duke – and one that's filled with some mighty nice grooves! Guardians Of The Light is a full-on "musical fantasy" – with the story line laid out in the liner notes, yet still a bit difficult to follow – but we can't fault him for that when it's done in his masterful R&B-fusion-funk approach! George sings on all cuts, but he also gets some stellar vocal assistance from Jeffrey Osborne, Portia Griffin, and Patti Austin. The record also has some surprisingly sweet mellow moments that bring a deeper level of spacey soul to the out-there concept – those laidback lines that George could always do better than anyone else! Titles include "Born To Love You", "You Are The Light", "Reach Out", "Give Me Your Love", "Stand", "Soon", and "Fly Away". (Jazz, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

Epic, 1984. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An underappreciated soul set from George Duke for Epic – his Rendezvous from '84 – an engagement worth keeping! Given the mid 80s release date, you might be expecting a whole lot of programming and drum machine action – there's a bit of it, but this is a really lively set with some great musicianship across the board – and the songs are pretty strong, too. Duke produced, sings and handles an array of instrumentation from keys to synths and programming, with Stanley Clarke, Paulinho Da Costa, Ernie Watts, Oscar Castro Neves and other great players in the mix. Titles include "Got To Get Back To Love", "Take It On", "She Can Wait Forever", "Stay Awhile", "Thinking Of You" (with some nice extended string arrangements), "Secret Rendezvous", and "Ipanema Lady" (Jazz, Soul) CD

Bouncy, beat-heavy soul from Five Star – really stepping out strongly on this self-titled set! The music's nothing new, and very familiar to fans of mainstream soul at the time – but the group really serve things up with a stronger edge than on previous releases – handling much of the production and songwriting themselves, often with a catchy, hook-heavy style that reminds us a lot of projects from the Jackson family around the same time. Things are plenty catchy throughout – not the deepest soul you might ever listen to, but the kind of work that definitely shines brighter than most in the mainstream R&B world at the time. A near-lost album of 80s soul from Rosie Gaines – produced, arranged, and mostly written by Rosie with help from a few key associates – and done in a nicely mellow style that has a deeper feel than most other work from her contemporaries! Instrumentation is definitely in the 80s mode – with a fair bit of electric percussion and keyboards – but Rosie's vocals aren't content with just sliding along with the rhythms, and have a deeply soulful range that we really like a lot, and which totally makes the record great. We've always been surprised that this set didn't push her onto bigger fame – but over and above that mystery, the record's a great one that holds together beautifully over the years. The only album ever from Groove Theory – but the set that introduced the world to Amel Larrieux – whose vocal talents alone are worth the price of admission! The feel here is a bit more mainstream soul than some of Amel's later work – but given the mid 90s date of release, the sound is still plenty underground – and filled with the warmer tones and deeper soul styles that wouldn't be that common until years later when the Neo Soul scene rose to prominence. The overall package is the work of former Mantronix member Bryce Wilson – who plays some keys, and ensures that the rhythms are never too bombastic to overwhelm Amel's vocals. Titles include the massive stepper's cut "Tell Me" that hit huge here in Chicago – plus "Baby Luv", "Didja Know", "Come Home", "Hello It's Me", "Hey U", "Good 2 Me", "You're Not The 1", and "Boy At The Window". Another single off Groove Theory's stellar debut, that introduced the world to Amel Larrieux, as a lead vocalist at least. Crisp hip hop influenced beats with a nice laidback vibe. This is the real deal for Screamin Jay Hawkins – the seminal 50s recordings done for the Okeh label, all of which are a lot harder and heavier than some of his later work! The format is simple R&B, but Screamin Jay brings a heck of a lot of himself to the sessions – singing in a raspy, raw sort of way that really lives up to his name – and hitting a variety of fresh and funky subjects in the lyrics – hardly the usual stuff of 50s bluesy recordings! Killer soul from Heatwave – a tight little group who definitely made the UK proud at the end of the 70s! The album's a bit more obscure than the group's first few, but the sound is very much the same – a warmly grooving approach that's neither too disco, nor too sleepy – always catchy on the hooks, and recorded with a nicely flanged style on the vocals – so that they're compressed a bit, and slide nicely in alongside the beats and keys! The mighty Rod Tempterton's still handling a good deal of the arrangements on the set, and some of the backings are orchestrated by Johnny Cameron – almost in a late 70s update of his earlier funky style. Titles include the funky cut "Gangsters Of The Groove", plus "All I Am", "Dreamin You", "Party Suite", "Posin Til Closin", "Turn Around", and "Where Did I Go Wrong", a sweet little ballad. Keyboardist Rod Temperton wrote all the tracks on the album – and he's got keen talent for both funky numbers and ballads. Although the Isley Brothers seem to be best remembered for their funky work of the 70s – which shows up again and again on compilations and soundtracks of music from the time – we've always equally loved their way with a ballad, as the group had a really sweet sound when they wanted to, perfectly formed for more intimate numbers, which they always still managed to deliver with a slight bit of rhythm under the mix. The set features mostly tracks from their glory years of the 70s – including "Hello It's Me", "Choosey Lover", "Make Me Say It Again Girl (parts 1 & 2)", "All In My Lover's Eyes", "Don't Say Goodnight (It's Time For Love) (parts 1 & 2)", and "You're The Key To My Heart" – but it also features the big 80s quiet storm hit "Caravan Of Love", which was performed by the Isley Jasper Isley team. 14 tracks in all. ✨✧ Isley BrothersGet Into Something ... CD
Epic/T Neck, 1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent album by the Isley Brothers – easily their rarest, and probably their funkiest! The record's pushing the T-Neck funk sound to the limit, adding in some heavy horns to the tracks, and really egging on the vocals of the group with some totally hard-hitting arrangements by George Patterson. The whole thing's got a really sinister feel – with horns replacing the guitars on some of the group's other albums, carving out these dark little lines that lead their vocals over the top of funky choppy rhythms that will blow your mind! Includes the excellent cut "Get Into Something", which sounds like a direct ripoff of "The Grunt", by the JBs (or is it the other way around?). Other good ones include "I Got To Find Me One", "Take Inventory", "Girls Will Be Girls", and more! CD

Epic/Real Gone, 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever official release of this obscure live moment from The Isley Brothers – a set that's also known as Wild In Woodstock, and which was recorded by the group live in a special studio setting! The vibe here is great – different than the bigger arena live Isleys of the 70s, and with this cool, compressed sound to the whole thing – even though the overall performance is definitely quite live and spontaneous! The sound is wonderful – about as clear a picture of this legendary lineup as you could hope to get – as they work some very special magic on cuts that include "That Lady", "Take Me To The Next Phase", "Fight The Power", "It's A Disco Night", "Livin In The Life/Go for Your Guns", "Don't Say Goodnight", "Here We Go Again", "Voyage To Atlantis", and a hip medley of "Hello It's Me/Footsteps In The Dark/For The Love Of You". T Neck/Epic, 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great mix of heavy funk and sweeter ballads from the Isley Brothers – and a record that's filled with two-part tracks that really let them stretch out and groove! The tunes have a bit more bass and keyboards than before – an approach that's even more electric than Isley funk of a few years back, and which steps out in some tightly vamping rhythms that still crackle with plenty of warmth and soul – especially on the mellower numbers, which dominate side two of the record, and really make this one worth having! Mellow tracks include "For The Love Of You (parts 1 & 2)", "Sensuality (parts 1 & 2)", and "Make Me Say It Again (parts 1 & 2)" – and funkier numbers include "Fight The Power (parts 1 & 2)", "The Heat Is On (parts 1 & 2)", and "Hope You Feel Better Love (parts 1 & 2)". CD also features a bonus track – a live version of "Fight The Power", recorded "live" in the studio, and never released before! CD

Michael, if only you'd stayed at this level! This 1979 solo album by Michael is a killer batch of soul grooves – one of his best moments ever, and a crowning cap to a stellar 70s run – both as a younger solo act, and with the whole Jackson family! Quincy Jones produced, and the album's got a funky undercurrent that's really stunning – clubby, yet plenty darn soulful, with a wickedly sly groove that others would try to copy for years, but never fully match. Titles include seminal groovers like "Rock With You", "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough", "Working Day And Night", "Girlfriend", "Off The Wall", "Burn This Disco Out" and more. The sound here really isn't disco or club, but it's a nicely upbeat groove that shows The Jacksons at the top of their game – tightly stepping and often highly rhythmic – and striking a great balance between strong lead vocals and some of the sweeter harmonies that got them going in the past. Michael Jackson's last album with his famous family – a set of electric 80s soul that's a bit different than Jackson's well-known solo work! In a way, the later Jacksons albums almost feel like a place where Michael can try out some ideas that don't fit as tightly into the overall sound of his own records – and there's definitely more diversity here than before – a shift between gentle ballads, beat-heavy tunes, and even a few rockish/poppish moments. Of course, we should probably be crediting the other Jacksons for their help in the sound here too – as they're certainly credited on the cover – but there's also less of the "many parts as one" sound than before, so it's hard to tell how they're working together. Probably the biggest album ever from the brother/sister team of Katreese and Jerry Barnes – working here as Juicy, in a sweet smooth 80s groove style that's mighty nice! Deodato produced the album, and it's similar to some of the other soul material he was handling in the 80s – slick and sparkling, but with a sweet jazzy touch that keeps things a lot more real than on other soul albums from the time. The Barnes siblings handle all vocals and instruments – and the record has a sweet poppy duet style that's perhaps a bit dated, but also kind of due for a revival. Features the group's great slow jam hit "Sugar Free", with lots of excellent bass pedal jamming – plus "Stay With Me", "Slow Dancing", "It Takes Two", and "Nobody But You". Epic/FTG, 1986. Used ... $5.99
Poppy passion from Krystol – a sweet 80s trio with a definite way with a hook! The set's got a well-balanced mainstream sound – one that helps the vocals find a fullness right away, either on the leads or harmonies – both woven together over the top of the tight, beat-heavy grooves! At points, there's almost a retro vibe – as if an older girl trio mode's being revived for a new 80s scene – but with a definite contemporary spin. There's a decidedly commercial appeal to the sound – but Krystol were also never too overplayed back in the day, which makes the album a nice discovery – and a great surprise when you start digging through all the potential singles on the set. Tracks include "Love Attack", "Passion From A Woman", "He's So Jive", "Baby Make Up Your Mind", "Scared Single", and "Precious Precious". In our minds, this was easily as strong a cut, and though it did well, it never seemed to break like "Juicy Fruit", which we still hear in "old school" mixes today. Not the traditional Johnny Otis Show records you might know from Johnny's famous R&B years of the 50s – and instead a totally great record from the start of the 70s that's filled with funk, soul, and blues! The set really shows the way that Otis changed with the times – and the overall sound is a lot freakier and fuzzier than any of his earlier records – at a level that really draws a strong link to the solo work of Shuggie Otis – who was part of Johnny's ensemble at the time, and who makes some excellent appearances here! Some cuts have sweet Shuggie guitar lines – and vocals are by Delmar Evans, Don Sugarcane Harris, Margie Evans, and Johnny. The record contains two excellent funky 45 cuts – "Cuttin Up", an instrumental with choppy guitar, and "The Watts Breakaway", with good groovy vocals by Delmar. Other titles include "Mo Jo Woman", "Evil Gal Blues", "It's Good To Be Free", "Elim Stole My Baby", "You Can Depend On Me", and "Don't Stretch This Good Thing Too Far". All this, and the LP's got a nice Jack Davis (of MAD fame)cartoony cover of the band doing surgery on a kid that we assume is Shuggie. to boot! CD
(CD case has a small cutout hole.)

Epic, 1971. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The second album from Shuggie Otis – a wild and wooly batch of grooves that really stretches out the sound from the first! Shuggie's got much more of a hand in the arrangements here – and the tunes are grooving in a sweet blend of funk, rock, and soul – really drenched in the best cross-cultural influences going down on the west coast scene of the time – a kind of color-blind quest for the groove that comes across with a really righteous power! Tracks include the original version of "Strawberry Letter 23" – plus the cuts "Ice Cold Daydream", "Freedom Flight", "Sweet Thang", "Purple", and "Me & My Woman". LP, Vinyl record album

Lou RawlsLove All Your Blues Away ... LP
Epic, 1986. Near Mint- ... $1.99
The voice of Lou Rawls is wonderful in so many different settings – in early gospel work with the Pilgrim Travelers, in 60s soul with HB Barnum and David Axelrod, and even hitting a Philly groove in the late 70s! Here, Lou takes on a whole new sound – working with more of an 80s soul approach set up by Jay Gradon and David Foster – smooth, but never soppy – and with nicely punctuated rhythms that have a midtempo stepping quality on most numbers – all to open up a new sort of groove for that magical Rawls vocal sound! Lou also brings some jazzy styles to play – almost previewing his work to come in the next few years – and titles include "Change Your Mind", "Are You With Me", "Love All Your Blues Away", "It Never Entered My Mind", "Learn To Love Again", and "We'll Be Together Again". ✨✧ Minnie RipertonAdventures In Paradise ... LP
Epic, 1975. Very Good ... $19.99
Maybe our favorite-ever album from Minnie Riperton during the 70s – a sweet, smooth jazzy gem that really makes some of the best use of her vocals! There's a sophistication here that's a great 70s counterpart to Minnie's earlier work with Charles Stepney – served up here in a very different style, but one that really sets Riperton apart from any of her contemporaries – in a unique blend of soul, jazz, and much deeper spirits – all handled with the sense of pride and style you'd expect from Minnie's image on the cover! All tracks were co-written by Riperton and Richard Rudolph – and a few get some great help from Leon Ware too. Titles include the massive track "Baby, This Love I Have" – a slow funk number that's be sampled many times over the years – plus the spacey tunes "Minnie's Lament", "Inside My Love", and "Alone In Brewster Bay", remade from Minnie's first LP – and the titles "Simple Things", "Feeling That Your Feeling's Right", and "Don't Let Anyone Bring You Down". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Minnie RipertonStay In Love – A Romantic Fantasy Set To Music ... LP
Epic, 1977. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Along with Perfect Angel and Adventures In Paradise, this is one of the key albums of Minnie's career – recorded when she was at the height of her power, forging a whole new soul sound that mixed her incredible voice with jazzy modern arrangements that were a few years ahead of most of the other singers at her level. The album's subtitled "A Romantic Fantasy Set To Music", and it features a swirling mix of ballads and uptempo tunes – all with a sexy sound, and some of the most seductive vocals that Minnie ever recorded. Includes the club groover "Young Willing & Able", plus "Can You Feel What I'm Saying?", "Gettin' Ready for Your Love", "Could It Be I'm In Love", and the great "Stick Together", written with Stevie Wonder. SadeBest Of Sade ... CD
Epic, Late 80s/Early 90s. Used ... $1.99
Has there ever been anyone as lovely as Sade? We think not – and from the time she first hit our ears in the 80s, it was the start of an instant love affair that's continued for decades! Sade really brought something new to music at the time – a return to older styles of acoustic and jazz-based instrumentation, at a time when so many soul singers were mostly working with beats, keyboards, and samples – and a breathy voice that was instantly unique, and which kept on captivating us for years of recordings. This best of collection dates from the mid 90s – and provides an excellent sampling of tracks from Sade's albums Diamond Life, Promise, Stronger Than Pride, and Love Deluxe – titles that include "No Ordinary Love", "Like A Tattoo", "Cherish The Day", "Kiss Of Life", "Your Love Is King", "Hang Onto Your Love", "Sweetest Taboo", "Is It A Crime", and "Nothing Can Come Between Us". Epic, 2011. Used CD & DVD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Live magic from Sade – an artist who only seems to captivate us more as the years go on! This recent performance is a great illustration of Sade's continuing strength in soul music – as she's already great enough on the CD included in the package, but really shines brightly on the visual component as well – a DVD performance that's even longer than the CD – and both are filled with great live interpretations of Sade gems from years back. The film is beautifully shot, and the music is very well-recorded – and titles include "In Another Time", "Love Is Found", "Skin", "Kiss Of Life", "All About Our Love", "The Moon & The Sky", "Pearls", "No Ordinary Love", "Cherish The Day", "Soldier Of Love", "Smooth Operator", "Paradise/Nothing Can Come Between Us", and "The Sweetest Taboo". A sweet little live set by Sade – done with the subdued warmth of her later work, but also featuring a few key songs from earlier years! There's a nicely understated quality to the record, in keeping with Sade's own presence – and we're quite pleased to hear how these songs hold up away from the studio. Titles include "Smooth Operator", "Jezebel", "Cherish The Day", "No Ordinary Love", "Flow", "Is It A Crime", "Kiss Of Life", "Slave Song", and "The Sweetest Taboo". CD

✨✧ Jill ScottExperience – Jill Scott 826+ ... CD
Epic/Hidden Beach, 2001. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Ok so she's got a Grammy – but that makes us love her even more! Jill Scott is one of the greatest soul artists to emerge in the past decade – and this second album avoids the usual "sophomore slump" by showing a whole new side of her talents! Disc one is a great live set – showing that Jill's organic talent isn't the product of studio trickery, and can conjure up as much warmth in person as it can on disc. The backing is tight, jazzy, and with a different finish than you might be accustomed to from Jill's first LP – less hip hop beats and more real funk drumming, a fuller group instrumental sound with lots of nice solos, and over it all, incredible vocals from Jill! The set's got smoking live versions of "One Is The Magic #", "A Long Walk", "Love Rain", "Getting In The Way", "Fatback Taffy", "He Loves Me", and "Do You Remember". (Neo Soul, Soul) CD

Epic/Wounded Bird, 1976. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
Man, if Doc Severinsen was this funky on TV back in the 70s, we might have watched the Johnny Carson Show a little bit more! The album's more of a smooth funky fusion album than Doc's usual big band sets – and he's got some good help from Fred Crane, who handles all the arrangements and gives the album a bit of a jazzy club feel – a lean groove that's mighty nice! Doc's got the main solos, but there's also keyboards and guitar, and vocals on about half the tracks (supposedly with Leon Thomas in the backup group!) Titles include "Little Tiny Feets", "Lookin Good", "Spanish Dreams", "I Wanna Be With You", "Night Journey", and "You Put The Shine On Me". (Jazz, Soul) CD

Sly & The Family StoneFresh (limited deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic, 1973. Used ... $6.99
Sly's leaping into the air on the cover of this one – and for good reason too, given the overall groove of the set! The album's a bit more stripped-down and upbeat than the previous few – almost more of a return to the simple funky style of the first albums, but with a slightly more electric sound than before – especially in the keyboards, which almost slide into the mix here with a Stevie Wonder-like quality. The electricity bubbles and brews wonderfully at the bottom of the rhythms – charging things up a bit, but still hanging back with a super-cool, laidback quality that few other groups could muster! There's a great sense of balance here that's brilliant – and which makes the album one of Sly's undisputed masterpieces from the Columbia years. Titles include the incredible "If You Want Me To Stay" – one of our favorite Sly Stone cuts ever – plus "Keep on Dancin", "Babies Making Babies", "Que Sera Sera", "If It Were Left Up To Me", "In Time", and "Let Me Have It All". CD's got 5 bonus tracks too – including alternate mixes of "Frisky", "Skin I'm In", "Keep On Dancin", "Babies Makin Babies", and "Let Me Have It All". CD

Killer work from Sly & The Family Stone – hard-grooving, fast-funking, and really setting the scene for countless groups to come! The album's a messed-up funky party, with plenty of short little tracks that have a mix of funk, soul, and rock – perfect for the crossover crowd from whence Sly sprang, and who would become his biggest supporters into the 70s. And almost best of all, there's hardly any hits here – just tight little numbers that are as fresh today as they were back at the end of the 60s – all the kind of righteous funk the group could do better than anybody else! Titles include "Fun", "Plastic Jim", "Dynamite!", "Chicken", "Into My Own Thing", "Life", "Love City", "I'm An Animal", and the seminal "Jane Is A Groupee". LP, Vinyl record album
