Ralph MacDonaldCounterpoint ... LP
Marlin, 1979. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Maybe one of the most soul-based records ever from percussionist Ralph MacDonald – partly because Ralph does a bit of singing, in addition to playing the heavy congas on the cover! Yet the record's still got the core jazz vibe of his other sets from the late 70s – served up with an all-star lineup that includes Grover Washington Jr on soprano and tenor, David Sanborn on alto, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Michael Brecker on tenor, Richard Tee on keyboards, and Eric Gale on guitar – all musicians who help give the whole thing the warm funky fusion vibe of late 70s albums on labels like Kudo or Tappan Zee! Some of the best cuts slide into a snapping 80s groove that opens up nicely with the instrumentation – and Ralph only sings a bit, leaving plenty of room for solos from the players. Titles include the great Latin-inflected groover "East Dry River" – plus "You Are In Love", "I Need Someone", "Tell The Truth", and "Always Something Missing". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the Marlin inner sleeve.)

✨✧ Neneh CherryBlank Project ... CD
Smalltown Supersound (Sweden), 2014. New Copy ... $4.99 15.99
Some of the most striking work we've heard from Neneh Cherry in years – and a great follow-up to her previous project with The Thing! This set has Neneh working with producer Kieran Hebden – who returns Cherry to the offbeat, arty sound of her early years on the British scene – particularly her excellent work with Rip Rig & Panic! As with that period, the rhythms here are key – but are also rhythms that really veer from the usual – odd basslines and beats that provide a jagged bottom underneath Cherry's soulfully flowing vocals – a sense of counterpoint that really gives the album a lot of power. Titles include "Naked", "Spit Three Times", "Blank Project", "Cynical", "422", "Out Of The Black", "Dossier", and "Everything". CD

FATFunky & Tough (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Bold/Clinck (Japan), 1977. Used ... $24.99
The cover's a silly one, but the record is rock-solid all the way through – a wonderful blend of funky jazz and warmer soul, and a real lost treasure from the 70s TK Records empire! Fat is Fats Gallon – who plays drums on the record, and also sings lead vocals a bit too – with this raspy southern soul style that's a great counterpoint to the smoother sounds on the set! Things get plenty funky and tough throughout – and the small combo lineup ensures that the record steers quite clear of the more commercial styles that were coming out of the Miami scene in the 70s. There's a jazzy inflection to most of the instrumentation, which makes for some compelling changes that have kept this set going strongly with new generations over the years – and the instrumentation includes loads of great guitar and keyboard bits too. Titles include "Doing Bad", "Tip Of My Tongue", "How Can I Explain", "Magician Man", "Life Is A Beautiful Thing", "Satan's Dream", and "Free My Mind". CD
(Out of print, includes obi.)

✨✧ Roberta Flack & Donny HathawayRoberta Flack & Donny Hathaway ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing record from the team of Flack & Hathaway – one of the hippest duos in soul! Individually, each had taken the music to new heights and new audiences, through the use of jazzy phrasing and sophisticated lyrics, while never selling out in the way that earlier pop soul acts had been reduced to. Flack's somber folksy style is a perfect match for the warm spirituality of Hathaway – and the pair work beautifully in counterpoint on hits like "You've Got A Friend" and "Where Is The Love", as well as on more obscure numbers like "Be Real Black For Me", "When Love Has Grown", and "For All We Know". The album also features a 7 minute spare acoustic/electric piano instrumental called "Mood". LP, Vinyl record album
(Broadway label RCA club pressing. Cover has small splits on the top & bottom seams.)

Mr Bongo (UK), 2000. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Masters At Work have always had a talent for making wonderful club numbers that maintain the flavor of the source, like this batucada derived groover, with some nice percolating MAW touches and a rich, bouncy vocal melody. The other 2 numbers, Otto's "Bob" and Tenoria Junior's "Nebulosa" provide a wonderful counterpoint to the heavier club groove with their breezy vibe. (New Grooves, Soul) CD

✨✧ One WayOne Way Featuring Al Hudson (1979) ... LP
MCA, 1979. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A dancefloor soul classic – one of the strongest albums ever by Al Hudson, Alicia Meyers, and the whole One Way crew! The record's got a sweet soulful feel that provides a nice counterpoint to its bass-heavy grooves – popping along at that midtempo pace that was Al's popular remedy for disco on the dancefloor, and which had a crucial effect on soul at the time. The album still plays mighty big here in Chicago, where a classic 80s groove can reign supreme if it's strong enough – and tracks include "You Can Do It", "I Am Under Your Spell", "Guess You Didn't Know It", "Music", "Come Dance With Me", and "Now That I Found You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original tan label pressing.)

Esther PhillipsCapricorn Princess ... LP
Kudu, 1976. Near Mint- ... $7.99
A pretty amazing set from Esther Phillips – her final album for Kudu – and a beautiful mix of soaring soul sounds from one the most unique, emotionally-inflected soul vocalists of her era! Esther's in prime Kudu mode here – working with jazzy arrangements by David Matthews and Pee Wee Ellis, adding her unique, grit-inflected soul chanteuse vocals to a smoother mix of instrumentation that creates a perfect counterpoint that took her way past her earlier work! There's also a couple of really sweet disco skewed numbers that work incredibly well – with spacier bits of synth and a dancefloor soul bed of percussion and rhythms – and in general, the arrangements are pretty great from track-to-track! Players include Randy Brecker and Mike Brecker on trumpet and tenor sax, Bray Miles on synthesizer, Bobby Lyle on clavinet, Eric Gale on guitar, Joe Farrell on tenor sax and alto flute, percussionist Ralph MacDonald and other excellent name musicians and others bring a grand sweep and sweeter intimacy when the mood requires. Titles include "Magic's In The Air", "A Beautiful Friendship", "Boy I Really Tied One On", "Higher & Higher", and "All The Way Down". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the Kudu inner sleeve.)

✨✧ Young-Holt UnlimitedBorn Again/Mellow Dreamin' ... CD
Water/Atlantic, 1970/1971. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Brilliant later work from the Young Holt Unlimited combo – 2 albums that really stand apart from the rest of their recordings! Born Again is a sophisticated batch of jazzy tracks that really opens the group's style up – going way way past the stock soul of some of their Brunswick recordings. The band's clearly taken on a more spiritual bent for this one – as you can probably guess from the Afro-madonna cover – and the music ranges from electric funk to trippier more spiritual numbers. The record features hip keyboards by Ken Chaney, Marylean Holt, and a young Bobby Lyle. Cash McCall plays guitar on a great reading of Richard Evans "Hot Pants" – and other tracks include "Luv Bugg", "Wah Wah Man", and "Save The Day". Mellow Dreamin is one of the group's wildest and most beautiful LPs – really pushing the sound to a freer-thinking style of soul with a myriad of interesting rhythms, strange instrumentation, and uncanny arrangements! The best proof of this is their fantastic take on "Midnight Cowboy" from the set – done with an insane breakdown, funky piano, and this cool trumpet line playing counterpoint to the piano as the track goes on! The whole set's great, though, and features some great originals by piano player Ken Chaney, like "The Creeper" and "Trippin" – plus the cuts "Mellow Dreamin", "The Devil Made Me Do Dat", and "Black & White". Young-Holt UnlimitedSoulful Strut ... CD
Brunswick/Solid (Japan), Late 60s. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
A funky soul instrumental classic – all the way through! The team of Eldee Young and Redd Holt first came to prominence with Ramsey Lewis' first Chicago trio, then branched out on their own as a jazz act – but by the time of this set, they'd picked up a hipper, funkier late 60s sort of soul groove – and were working with larger backings and a nice deal of extra bass! The pianist in the group is the super-dope Ken Chaney – a player who uses space as much as he uses notes – providing a cool counterpoint to the funky and jazzy riffing of the Young/Holt bass/drum combo. The album includes the landmark track "Soulful Strut" – with tinkling piano over funky backings mixed with sweetened strings – and other tracks include "Funky Is As Funky Does", "Baby Your Light Is Out", "Who's Making Love", "Ain't There Something Money Can't Buy?", "Be By My Side", and "Please Sunrise". A high point in the Chicago soul scene – with backings by Willie Henderson! CD
