✨✧ Bobbi HumphreyTailor Made ... LP
Epic, 1977. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Sure, it's after the Blue Note/Larry Mizell years – but Bobbi's still kicking ass! Instead of Larry Mizell, Bobbi's working with Skip Scarborough – and she's hitting a groove that's a bit smoother and more modern than before, but every bit as sweetly funky and seriously soulful. Bobbi vocalizes a bit amidst spacey jazzy arrangements, and her flute is crystal clear throughout! The title cut, "Tailor Made", is a monster mellow groover with a great slinky sound – and the album's got plenty of other nice ones, like "Jealousy", "Lover to Lover", and "Fajehzo". (Jazz, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Etta JamesQueen Of Soul ... LP
Argo, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Queen of Soul is right! Heck, on these early albums, Etta practically invented soul – or at least invented a deep soul style of singing that would be taken up by countless other female singers during the 60s, but rarely matched with this kind of brilliance. Straight up beautiful stuff! The arrangements are uncredited, but we think they're probably by Riley Hampton – who did so much of Etta's other wonderful work in the early 60s. The recordings for sure took place at points between '62 and '64, mostly in Chicago, with couple in New York and one in Nashville. One other thing that is crystal clear about the sessions is that she had access to the very best musicians and the best sound possible – all you need is a listen to know that! The album's an all-solid, all-soul record with loads of obscure tunes and not a bit of filler! Titles include "Flight 101", "Bobby Is His Name", "Breaking Point", "Mello Fellow", "Do Right", and "Somewhere Out There". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Roger (Roger Troutman)Many Facets Of Roger ... LP
Warner, 1981. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
There's many facets of Roger – and they're all pretty darn funky! From this vantage point, all we can think of is that Roger Troutman must have had some sort of crystal ball to see into the hip hop sampling future – either that, or he was busy cooking up west coast gangster funk drones in some secret So Cal laboratory! Whatever the case, though, the record's a classic in the Troutman/Zapp catalog – and features a sparkling west coast take on electro – offered up with lots of popping basslines, snapping electric kickdrums, and a truckfull of vocoder! There's also some pretty nice guitar in the mix – especially on the good jazzy groover "Chunk Of Sugar", which sounds like it's from a completely different record. Other tracks include "Maxx Axe", "Do It Roger", "So Ruff, So Tuff", and "Blue". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ VariousUptown Down South ... CD
Excello, Early 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great set, and one that picks up on a very cool concept – as it features tracks that have the cooler, classier side of southern soul – music that was recorded for the mighty Excello family of labels in its later years, at a time when both deep soul and the indie label scene were really changing things up! There's a great crossroads of styles going on here – bluesy currents, raw soul, and some richer production that really sews the whole thing together – on tracks that were mostly issued as 7" singles, but work here together tremendously well as a compilation! CD features 24 tracks in all – including "Crystal Blue Persuasion" by The Kelly Brothers, "Sweetest Girl In The World" by Roger Hatcher, "That's Loving You" by Percy Wiggins, "Even If The Signs Are Wrong" by Shirley Brown, "Childhood Days" by Bobby Powell, "Don't Let Our Love Fade Away" by Marva Whitney, "Save A Foolish Man" by Lee Brackett, "That's My Man" by Marion James, "I Would If I Could" by The Avons, "Set Your Soul On Fire" by Jerry Washington, "What Price For Love" by Bennie Shaw, and "I'm Not Your Regular Woman" by Lucille Mathis. ✨✧ CrystalsCrystals Twist Uptown ... LP
Philles, Early 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
The Crystals twist uptown, and take their groove to a whole new region in the process! The album's title is very apt, as the whole thing is a real blueprint for the uptown soul sound of the 60s – swirling strings, soulful vocals, and rhythms that have enough punch to keep things moving – even on the mellower moments – all crafted perfectly by the young Phil Spector! There's hardly any real twist tunes on the record – which is great by us, as it means that instead of gimmicky dance numbers, The Crystals really get to sparkle in the kind of heartbreaking soul numbers they've always done so well! Titles include the chilling "Please Hurt Me" – a classic from the Goffin/King team – plus "There's No Other (Like My Baby)", "What A Nice Way To Turn Seventeen", "Frankenstein Twist", "Gee Whiz", "Another Country Another World", "Uptown", and "I Love You Eddie". ✨✧ Darlene LoveSound Of Love – The Very Best Of Darlene Love ... CD
Philles/Legacy, 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful batch of Darlene Love recordings for Phil Spector – excellent solo numbers plus gems with The Blossoms, The Crystals and Bob B Soxx And The Blue Jeans! By nature of her career, Darlene worked in a number of different styles over the years– from R&B orchestra, to sweetly laidback soul, to boisterous girl group and back again. Sounds Of Love focuses on the big early-to-mid 60s years with Spector at the helm, but opens and closes with earlier and later gems, and it's terrific stuff all the way! Titles include "No Other Love", That's When The Tears Start" and "Good Good Lovin'" with The Blossoms, "He's A Rebel" with The Crystals, "Why Do Lovers Break Each Others Hearts?" with Bob B Soxx And The Blue Jeans, "Run Run Runaway", "A Fine, Fine Boy", "Stumble And Fall", "A Long Way To Be Happy", "Lord, If You're A Woman" and more.
