It's hard to imagine a more exciting single from the early 80s – as both sides of this one completely changed our way of listening to music, and set the tone for a generation of sounds to come. "Moments In Love" is that breathy slow stepper, presented here in long and short versions – and "Beat Box" is the hip hop inspired groover that helped these guys win Best New Black Artist from Rolling Stone in 1984, in spite of their non-blackness. 12-inch, Vinyl record
"Dance To The Drummer's Beat" was real stormer in the South Bronx back in the day, and a great bit of uptempo funk with congas – the break and chorus are both great, and the single's like finding a page in the history of hip hop book! 12-inch, Vinyl record
An offshoot of the 4AD rock scene from the UK, this number sampled Rakim from "Paid In Full" to great effect – and it made quite a bit of sense that the track was issued on 4th & Broadway in the US (probably also a legal move, so that the label wouldn't sue 4AD for copping a sample from one of their artists! The record features a bit of scratching by CJ Mackintosh, with a bubbly beat that made it huge on both sides of the Atlantic. 12-inch, Vinyl record
Nice stuff! After coming out of the box as a heavier funk outfit in the early 70s, Ripple changed their tune for the disco years – stretching their groove into a warm clubby sound that's stayed classic for years and years! "Beat Goes On & On" is one of their greatest cuts from this time – a strident groover that had a big influence on the house scene in Chicago! 12-inch, Vinyl record
A great moment in chart soul – when the legendary Soul II Soul were restoring our faith in modern music again! This US 12" single features 2 Teddy Riley new jack remixes (to pop into the charts), plus the Caron Wheeler 12" version and that Nellee Hooper 7" version. All that and extra beats, too! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Orange label pressing. Cover has a bit of faded marker.)
(In a red and white Apexton sleeve, lightly stained at the spine, with some stuck-on paper, and an index label with BPM. Label has BPM written in pen.)
A key step in the path from The Housemartins to Fatboy Slim – Norman Cook's first big dancefloor excursion, and a super-big hit that sounds surprisingly nice these days! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Promo copy. Cover has light wear and a cutout notch. Labels have a name in marker.)
One of the coolest spacey club tracks of the 70s gets a superb remix here in the hands of Dimitri From Paris – all done at a level that still keeps all the great charms of the original! There's a new 2023 mix and extended mix of the cut that follow the soaring groove, building bassline, and incredible breaking rhythm of the original – then the two Dimitri mixes pick up some clubbier elements, but still with an old school vibe that's mighty nice – and which leaves plenty of room for those spacey vocals by Asha Puthli! 12-inch, Vinyl record
One of the lesser known singles from this seminal Detroit techno group, with a groove that leans a bit more on the industrial dance side than their earlier electro numbers – with a hard heavy deep bass beat sound. 12-inch, Vinyl record
A great little electro groover from Fatback – less funky and more beat-heavy than the group's other work – but a great crossover tune with a heck of a pretty hook! Dance version has a nice mix by Francois K, too! 12-inch, Vinyl record
The other single from one-hit-wonders Indeep. The cut has almost the same feel as "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life", with an insistent beat and a propulsive bass pedal, and a sort of chirping funky guitar line, but at a slightly slower tempo. The scratch versions don't actually have scratching on them, but are more like striped down bonus beats. 12-inch, Vinyl record
Ah for the mid 80s, when a song like this passed for politics in music! Forget the stupid message lyrics, though, and remember that Hardcastle cracked a lot of scenes with the cut – forging kind of a pop-political-street beat kind of groove. 12-inch, Vinyl record
(In a plain sleeve.)
