✨✧ Taka BoomTaka Boom ... LP
Ariola, 1979. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Classic club from Taka Boom – a singer with a name that was just right for the disco generation! Taka's got an approach here that's common for the time, but also a cut above – an approach to disco that's more soulful overall, and which has a bit more staying power than throwaway pop for the clubs. The album features some good help in the right places – including sister Chaka Khan on backing vocals, Gary Bartz on alto sax, and McKinley Jackson on some of the arrangements – all forces that nicely match the soulful impulse of Taka's vocals. Titles include "Troubled Waters", "Night Dancin", "Red Hot", "Dance Like You Do At Home", "Cloud Dancer", "You're My Everything", and "Dance Baby Dance". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Chapter 8Chapter 8 ... LP
Ariola, 1979. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first album from Chapter 8 – a set that's probably best remembered for introducing the world to Anita Baker, but one that's also pretty darn great on its own! Chapter 8 have a sharply soulful focus, one that takes them a bit above some of the other mainstream ensembles of the time – a balance of grooving rhythms and deeper feelings that's just about perfect – about at the level you might get from Maze or LTD, two other groups who both sported equally soulful lead singers! Gerald Lyles sings the male parts alongside Anita, and the blend is perfect – one that should have made the record even bigger than it was at the time, but maybe all that much better, since the lack of hit quality really keeps things fresh. Titles include the singles "Ready For Your Love" and "I Just Wanna Be Your Girl", plus "Don't You Like It", "Let's Get Together", "Come & Boogie", "I Go Disco", and "We Need Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some ring and edge wear, heavy wear at the spine, and is bent at the bottom left corner.)

✨✧ EruptionEruption – Featuring Precious Wilson ... LP
Ariola, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A great funky group with a hell of a lead singer – so much so, they decided to put her name on the title of this album! Precious Wilson's got a voice that might have been suited to deep soul, had she sung in the 60s – but here, she works with Eruption on a set of cuts that have kind of a funky club vibe – less disco, and more ensemble funk – with a lean, clean groove that almost points the way more towards soul styles of the 80s. Basslines and keyboards are at the core of most numbers, even though there's some added horns and larger arrangements – and there's a great sense of pacing to the album, as evidenced by Wilson's great covers of the Ann Peeble's classic "I Can't Stand The Rain", and a nice remake of The Staple Singers' "I'll Take You There". Other tracks include "Do You Know What It Feels Like", "Be Yourself", "Wayward Love", "Party Party", and "Computer Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Sabu (Paul Sabu)Sabu – The Album ... CD
Ariola/Get Disconnected, Late 70s. New Copy ... $10.99 16.99
There's enough chest hair on the cover of this one to carpet the inside of any custom van – but the record's a fair bit better than you might guess from its image! The set's an outing as a leader by disco maestro Paul Sabu – one that features plenty of the riffing guitar he brought to other disco sessions of the late 70s – spun out over some relatively extended tracks that step along in a very clubby mode! Other instrumentation includes keyboards, bass, and lots of the percussion that made Sabu productions great for other artists – and even though Paul sings a bit, his vocals are mostly compressed down into the rhythms pretty strongly. Titles include "You're Mine Forever", "Loose Lucy Is On The Loose", "I Wanna Feel It In My Heart", "We're Gonna Rock", and "Rocking Rolling Disco King". And note: this isn't the same guy as Sabu Martinez, the conga player! CD

Ariola, 1975. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the best albums we've ever heard from this funky rock group – kind of a mix of styles by groups like Average White Band, Sweetwater, and Tower Of Power. The album features the great funk track "Without Love", which begins with a monster break that has a very dark Eric B kind of feel – plus tracks that include "Rainbow's End", "Geoff's Vibe", "Planet Ripper", "Marp", "Like To Get To Know You", and "All & Everything". ✨✧ Tatsuro YamashitaFor You (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Ariola (Japan), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic groove album from Japanese singer Tatsuro Yamashita – one that takes all the funky soul modes he'd forged in the 70s, and fits them with a tighter 80s groove overall! The set has Tatsuro working with his core band, who've really honed things to a "T", and are going for that leaner funky style that many American soul acts were using at the time – stronger basslines, mixed with riffing guitar and plenty of keyboards – which leaves Yamashita's vocals right out front in the mix, soaring with that uniquely soulful style of his! Titles include "Futari", "Morning Glory", "Hey Reporter", "Love Talkin", "Loveland Island", "Sparkle", and "Your Eyes". (Japanese, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album
(Heavy Japanese pressing, with obi!)

✨✧ Tatsuro YamashitaMoonglow ... LP
Ariola/Sony (Japan), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $44.99 52.99
A sweet masterpiece of 70s AOR from Japan – served up by Tatsuro Yamashita, who was easily one of the most soulful male singers on the scene in the years before city pop! The record's got a jazzy vibe that's great, and which really fits the R&B-inspired midtempo rhythms – almost as if Wayne Henderson had a hand in putting the whole thing together, similar to some of his late 70s productions for Fantasy Records – but with some occasional 80s touches that also hint at changes to come in the next decade. Vocals are all in Japanese, but the record's got a very universal appeal – and titles include "Rainy Walk", "Funky Flushin", "Hot Shot", "Touch Me Lightly", "Yellow Cab", "Nightwing", and "Full Moon". Playful Italian disco from the 70s – done with a few cheesy touches, including the "harem" cover on the record – but also featuring some nice longer tracks that have better instrumental passages! There's a nice exotic feel on "Sandstorm", complete with Eastern-styled strings – and a few cuts also feature some nice moogy bits too. Our favorite is the kitschy "Song For Smokey & The Bandit" – and other tracks include "One For You One For Me", "Hey Woman", and "There For Me". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA/BMG (Japan), Late 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great collection of work from this soulful Japanese singer - all of his best for RCA and Ariola, collected here in one sweet set! There were few cats on the Japanese scene of the time who could match the approach of US soul singers as well as Yamashita – and you'll definitely hear proof of that on Tatsuro's work on cuts that include "Windy Lady", "Bomber", "Loveland Island", "Ride On Time (single version)", "Door Into Summer", "Let's Dance Baby", "Your Eyes", "Solid Slider", and "Funky Flushin". (Japanese, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album
