✨✧ Minnie RipertonPerfect Angel ... LP
Epic, 1974. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Minnie Riperton's first album for Epic – and the record that broke her from a hip Chicago underground artist into one of the seventies' biggest female soul stars! The record moves past the baroque soul of Minnie's early years with Rotary Connection and Charles Stepney – and hits a mix of mellow compressed LA styles and slicker funkier numbers that do the same thing for her Chicago-trained vocals that Rufus' backing did for that of Chaka Khan. Of course, it helps that she's got some superbly sensitive writing and arranging help by husband Richard Rudolph – and Stevie Wonder's definitely lurking in the background, too – not credited with production, due to contractual reasons, although he helped put most of the album together. Includes Minnie's huge crossover hit "Loving You", a perfect showcase for her beautiful 5 octave voice, plus the tracks "Our Lives", "Every Time He Comes Around", "Perfect Angel", and "Reasons". LP, Vinyl record album
(Orange label pressing with Kendun stamp.)

✨✧ Angela BofillAngel Of The Night ... LP
Arista/GRP, 1979. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Sweet jazzy soul from Angie Bofill – recorded in 1979 with Dave Grusin, who gives the album a smooth edge that really works perfectly with her vocals! The set's a perfect blend of the more soulful elements in the fusion scene of the late 70s, combined with Angie's warm vocal style and some excellent songwriting. Titles include "I Try", "Angel Of The Night", "What I Wouldn't Do", "Rainbow Child", "The Voyage", and a great cover of "People Make The World Go Round". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ohio PlayersAngel ... LP
Mercury, 1977. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the last great album in the Ohio Players run for Mercury in the mid 70s – a set that's every bit as smooth, sexy, and funky as their other major label efforts from the time – and one that continued to refine the grittier funk of their roots! While the Players might be remembered for their over the top jams, the cuts here we love the best are the mellower steppers – tracks that still have plenty of funk in the mix, but hit a gentler groove, too – following the spacey soul legacy of "Sweet Sticky Thing". Titles on the album include "Glad To Know You're Mine", "Angel", "Merry-Go-Round", "Don't Fight My Love", "Body Vibes" and "Ohio". LP, Vinyl record album

Betty DavisIs It Love Or Desire (gold vinyl pressing) ... LP
Light In The Attic, 1976. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99 31.99
A lost album from 70s funk diva Betty Davis – and one that's every bit as essential as her music released back in the day! The set was recorded hot on the heels of Betty's classic Nasty Gal album – but it's got a groove that's almost more in the territory of her first two records on the Just Sunshine label – very hard, heavy, freaky, and fuzzy – with lots of sharp-edged guitar licks wrapped up around Davis' badass vocals – which have just as much attitude as ever! It's not clear why the album never saw the light of day back in the 70s, but it's an essential follow-up to Davis key classics – undeniably funky music by one of the most unique figures ever in soul – the kind of set that would have been a bomb, had it dropped in the 70s – and which will have an even greater impact when let loose in the 21st Century. Titles include "Stars Starve You Know", "Bottom Of The Barrel", "Crashin From Passion", "Whorey Angel", "It's So Good", "Is It Love Or Desire", "Bar Hoppin", and "Let's Get Personal". Aretha FranklinHey, Now Hey (The Other Side Of The Sky) ... LP
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $19.99
One of Aretha Franklin's greatest records – and a complicated batch of jazzy tunes that features arrangements and production by Quincy Jones! The record breaks way past the stock southern soul style of some of Aretha's earlier work for Atlantic – and it features a more sophisticated style that hits a number of different moods, and which shows off Aretha's strong commitment to growth as an artist. Features a semi-hit reading of King Pleasure's old classic, "Moody's Mood For Love", plus "Sister From Texas", "Somewhere", "Angel", and "That's The Way I Feel About Cha". LP, Vinyl record album

Dick GregoryEast & West ... LP
Colpix, 1961. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Dick Gregory raps it proud and loud – in a set of recordings that features one side recorded on the east coast, and one on the west! Gregory's still very much a comedian at this point in his career, but already his work is peppered strongly with political elements – the kind of personal, earnest approach to his material that was years ahead of its time – and which went onto open the door for countless other comedians to come! Side one was recorded at The Blue Angel, and side two at The Hungry I. (Comedy, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono gold label pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear and aging, with some spotty blemishes and a light scrape at the bottom right corner.)

Millie JacksonFeelin' Bitchy ... LP
Spring, 1977. Very Good ... $6.99
Millie Jackson's feelin bitchy – and letting a whole new side of her talents show! After the sweet southern soul sound of her early recordings, the Jackson style takes a sharp shift here – letting a bitchier side show up more strongly, and really setting the tone for the next great chapter of her music! Some of the set still features the older style production work by Brad Shapiro – but that's also pushed out by a smoother more modern soul feel on most of the record – one that has Millie emerging with a lot more pride, presence, and power than ever – all-woman, and all in control! Titles include the 10 minute Latimore cut "All The Way Lover", which has a great monologue that would even make Latimore blush – plus the tracks "A Little Taste Of Outside Love", "Feelin Like A Woman", "Angel In Your Arms", and the great "If You're Not Back In Love By Monday". Fern KinneyGroove Me ... LP
Malaco, 1979. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A standout classic from Fern Kinney – and a set that not only marked a big moment of evolution for southern soul, but also for the Mississippi scene as well! The set was recorded at the Malaco studios in Jackson, but has a vibe that's much closer to some of the TK Records material from Miami – that maturation of southern soul during the disco era – as warmer, more modern touches came into play with rootsier styles of vocals! Mike Lewis handled the string arrangements – giving the record the same disco vibe as some of his other work of the time, including Anita Ward's big debut – and Fern's vocals have this higher range than usual for a southern singer – almost more innately tuned towards clubby rhythms. Titles include a big hit remake of King Floyd's "Groove Me" – really marking the change from the original version – plus "Baby Let Me Kiss You", "Pillow Talk", "Sun Moon Rain", "Angel On The Ground", and "Under Fire". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label promo. Cover has a cutout notch and some light peeling in ring-form on both sides.)

✨✧ Gil Scott-HeronSecrets ... LP
Arista, 1978. Near Mint- ... $26.99
A key crossover set from Gil Scott-Heron – still every bit as political as his earlier work, but with a stronger sense of soul as well! The great Brian Jackson is firmly in tow here – bringing warm keyboards and a nice little groove to most of the tracks – and the previous acoustic moments are replaced with more electric instrumentation overall, but never in a way that seeks to dampen Gil's message, nor push him into easy commercial territory. Instead, the tighter rhythms seem to really hammer home some of the lyrics – most famously in "Angel Dust", which almost touched a wider audience than the drug itself – and equally nicely on cuts that include "Cane", "Angola Louisiana", "Show Bizness", "Better Days Ahead", and "Madison Avenue". LP, Vinyl record album

Some of the best tracks ever from the pair of Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson – some of most righteous, authoritative and thematically heavy soul music ever created – compiled in one incredible set! Messianic, emotive vocals from Gil and stunningly restrained, magical soul jazz arrangements from Brian – words can't express how dynamic these tunes are! Great stuff from classic LPs such as Winter In America, It's Your World, First Minute Of A New Day, Secrets and more! 15 tracks in all: "The Bottle", "It's Your World", "Johannesburg", "Winter In America", "The Liberation (Red, Black & Green)", "Home Is Where The Hatred Is (Live)", "We Almost Lost Detroit", "Angel Dust", "Show Bizness", "Madison Avenue", "Shut 'Em Down", "Alien (Hold On To Your Dreams)". TavaresBest Of Tavares ... LP
Capitol, Mid 70s. Very Good+ ... $7.99
One of Capitol's biggest soul bands of the 70s – and a strong sweet group who made the shift from mellow soul to the disco years. The set kicks off with the band's massive "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel", but we prefer their mellower stuff – like their sublime version of "She's Gone", and "Bein With You", "It Only Takes A Minute", and "The Love I Never Had". TavaresSky High ... LP
Capitol, 1976. Near Mint- ... $13.99
A stone 70s classic from Tavares – quite possibly the group's biggest album, and a masterpiece of LA vocal group soul! The album's biggest claim to fame is the massive hit "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel", recorded by the group for this set, but blown to the heights through it's huge use in the film Saturday Night Fever. But although that hit might mark them as a disco group, Tavares are still very much in the strongest style of their best early vocal group sets – coming together magically as a group, even when the rhythms are a bit uptempo, and sounding great on tracks that include "To The Other Man", "The Mighty Power Of Love", "Bein With You", "Ridin High", "Wonderful", and "Guiding Star". Pompeii/Soulgramma (Italy), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
Great stuff – and one of the funkiest albums that Ike Turner ever recorded – done during a late 60s moment when his fame with Tina Turner was really on the rise – but much more like some funky 45 take on the pre-Tina work he'd been doing in the 50s! This set's a batch of obscure funky instrumentals – and sounds like a strong compilation of rare 45s, filled with hard funky drums, nice breaks, and plenty of super-tight grooves. Nearly every cut's a winner – and titles include "Black Angel", "Black Beauty", "Freedom Sound", "Ghetto Funk", "Funky Mule", "Nuttin' Up", "Scotty Souling", and "Thinking Black". With titles like that, you know the cuts have got to be good – and for one of the few times in his career, Ike actually delivers the funky goods! LP, Vinyl record album

Dionne WarwickNo Night So Long ... LP
Arista, 1980. Near Mint- ... $2.99
A key album in Dionne Warwick's career revival at Arista Records – a set that's filled with the kind of fuller sounds and maturing modes that worked quite well for her shifts in styles over the years! Warwick's a bit less fragile than in the Scepter years, but also not trying as hard to be an all-out soul singer as she was at Warner Brothers – instead nicely laying back into the album's grooves, which usually have a smooth, modern soul approach – almost in Phyllis Hyman territory at times, yet with more of the mainstream modes that were more appropriate for Warwick's audience. Production is by Steve Buckingham, and titles include "Sweetie Pie", "How You Once Loved Me", "It's The Falling In Love", "Easy Love", "We Had This Time", "When The World Runs Out Of Love", and "Somebody's Angel". A huge document of work from LA's Consolidated Productions – a company you might not know by name, but one who issued work on a number of tiny indie labels – including City Lights, Simco, Space, Velvet, Angel Town, and many other labels! The set is heavy on 60s soul in a variety of styles – and features group harmonies, deep soul singers, and even some instrumental work too – all with qualities that are very much in the best modes that the Chicago scene was recording at the time – sophisticated, but gritty too – and with a vibe that's way past the 60s soul hits you'll find on mainstream compilations! You'll recognize a few names here – including Gene Russell, later of Black Jazz fame – and there's a fair bit of obscure artists too – in a set list of 28 tracks that include "Misery" by The DeVelles, "Cool It Baby" by BB Carter, "I'm Mad" by Spider Walker, "Money Man" by LA Untouchables, "I Got To See My Baby" by Lee Jones, "Jet Set" and "Doin The Snake Hips" by Gene Russell's Trio, "Don't You Fool Me" by Ann Stacy, "My Lover" by Marilyn Calloway & The 4 Silvertones, "Lighten Up Baby" by Ty Karim, "Turkey Trot" by Dynamic Duo & The Penguiness, "False Pride" and "Prove It" by Lee Harvey, and "So Called Friend" by Billy Williams. VariousIf I Had A Pair Of Wings – Jamaican Doo Wop Vol 1 ... LP
Death Is Not The End, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $22.99 24.99
Very early work from the Jamaican scene – a set that includes cuts by artists who'd later record classic tracks in the rocksteady years, but who here are working in a much different mode! The title is plenty apt, but only gets at part of the sound – as this isn't straight doo wop as you'd know from the American scene, but instead some early group harmony – of the sort that would flourish even more strongly on famous Jamaican trio recordings of the late 60s – handled here with much more stripped-down instrumentation, and a shifting set of rhythms that mixes US influences with other more Caribbean modes. Titles include "Muriel" by Alton & Eddie, "Dearest Darling" by Jiving Juniors, "Til The End Of Time" by Chuck & Dobby, "Dearest Beverly" by Jimmy Cliff, "Heavenly Angel" by Laurel Aitken, "Do You Know" by Owen & Millie, "I'm Going Back" by The Charmers, "Diamonds & Pearls" by Dobby Dobson, and "Album Of Memory" by The Mellowlarks. VariousIf I Had A Pair Of Wings – Jamaican Doo Wop Vol 3 ... LP
Death Is Not The End (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $22.99
A third healthy dose of music from the early years of the Jamaican scene – work that's a direct precursor to the trio group soul mode of the rocksteady years, and which provides a great bridge into the way that American soul music went on to have such a strong influence on reggae! The "doo wop" in the title is key here – as these tracks are definitely heavy on harmonies and lighter on instrumentation – very much tied to American expressions of the genre, and delivered by artists who'd both go on to later fame, and disappear in the shifting sands of time. Titles include "My Heaven" by Alton & Eddie, "Sweet As An Angel" by Jiving Juniors, "First Time We Met" by Annette & Shenley, "Dream Girl" by Ricketts & Rowe, "Don't You Know" by The Moonlighters, "I'll Always Call Your Name" by Belltones, "Never Go Away" by Wilfred Jackie Edwards, "Change Of Mind" by Higgs & Wilson, and "I've Done You Wrong" by The Blues Busters. RCA, 1970. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful bit of funky rocking soul – and the one and only album by the Deirdre Wilson Tabac – a group whose name is as strange as their grooves are funky! The group are best known for their well-compiled track "I Can't Keep From Cryin Sometimes" – an uptempo jazzy gem that mixes skipping Hammond with soaring vocals and some really great horns – and the rest of this set has a very similar feel – one that blends jazz rock with more soulful vocals, in a groove that's totally unique! Sonny Casella wrote, arranged, and produced the record – and he's also the drummer in the group, so there's keen attention to rhythms on all tracks. Titles include "I Can't Keep From Cryin", "Magic One", "I Go To You", "Other Side Of Life", "Angel Baby", "Get Back", "The Last Thing On His Mind", and "Let's All Join Together". Stax, 1972. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark double-live album that was easily one of the most important soul record moments of the 70s! The concert was an all-star event held in LA to celebrate the anniversary of the Watts riots – but it features a killer lineup of talent from the roster of Stax Records – by then a proud independent with more than enough power to spread a nationwide message from Memphis to Los Angeles without any trouble! The record is nicely segmented – so that it offers up mini "sets" by each artist – really recreating the feel of the event, at a level that lived on in countless living rooms long after the concert was over. Titles include "Son Of Shaft/Feel It" and "I Can't Turn You Loose" by The Bar-Kays; "Ain't No Sunshine" by Isaac Hayes, "I Don't Know What This World Is Coming To" and "Hearsay" by The Soul Children, "I Like What You're Doing To Me" and "Gee Whiz" by Carla Thomas; "The Breakdown" and "Do The Funky Penguin" by Rufus Thomas, "Killing Floor" and "Angel Of Mercy" by Albert King"; "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There" by The Staple Singers; and "Knock On Wood" by Eddie Floyd. Warner, 1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The classic debut from Change – and the start of an amazing run of groovers in the early 80s! The set's got a tight, jazzy feel throughout – a stripped-down approach to disco modes, with the same focus on the basslines that you'd find in work by Chic – but a style that's almost even more instrumentally focused overall, given the great range of studio players who worked on the set. Yet there's also some key vocal moments, too – work by Luther Vandross that really helps make some of the best tracks sparkle, and which went onto catapult Vandross into a rich solo career on his own. The set's filled with sharp rhythms and sweet jazzy changes – and titles include the classics "The Glow Of Love" and "Searching", both with Luther, plus "Lover's Holiday", "Angel In My Pocket", and "The End". The album begins with a rock-solid punch, then continues strongly throughout – basslines, guitar riffs, and funky drums all right on the money – used in a way that's somehow fresher than most of the larger funk groups of the time – and with a nice balance between mellower moments that still seem to have a gentle kind of groove. The energy is wonderful throughout – and titles include "Give It Up For Love", "Love In The Fast Lane", "Revenge", "Here I Am", "A Man In Love", and "You're My Angel". LP, Vinyl record album

A group that definitely lives up to its name – given that the lineup features the Chess Records stalwarts Bo Diddley, Howlin Wolf, and Muddy Waters! The set's maybe a bit more in the mode of Wolf or Waters than some of Bo's own records – although there's a bit of that riffing spark of his at times – and the tracks are often nice and long, with more than enough room to make you feel like Phil Chess gave these guys plenty of space in the studio to hang out, and find the right way to interact. As much as we love Chess albums with short songs and a soulful punch, we really appreciate it when they can break format and open up on a session like this – which really helps create a unique moment on record! One of the things we love best about Angela Bofill is how she exemplifies what was so great about late 70s commercial soul, where she and other singers like Phyllis Hyman and Patrice Rushen were infusing their music with a great jazz inflected sophistication, and just plain solid songwriting, versus the sort of crowd pleasing antics most pop soul singers employ today. This collection brings together many of her greatest numbers, including "I Try", "Angel Of The Night", "What I Wouldn't Do", "This Time I'll Be Sweeter", "Something About You", "Time To Say Goodbye", "Let Me Be The One" and "Tonight I Give In", 12 tracks in all. ✨✧ Betty DavisIs It Love Or Desire ... LP
Light In The Attic, 1976. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Aretha FranklinAretha (1986) ... LP
Arista, 1986. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A big one from Aretha Franklin's 80s comeback years on Arista Records – a set that features a surprising guest appearance from Keith Richards, but mostly concentrates on Franklin's successful run with producer/arranger Narada Michael Walden – who continues to do a great job of updating her sound! There's less deep soul numbers here than in the early days, and instead Aretha goes for a gentler expression of her range – but one that still soars in all the right places. The album features duets with Larry Graham and George Michael – and titles include "An Angel Cries", "Rock A Lott", "He'll Come Along", "Jimmy Lee", "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me", "Jumpin Jack Flash", and "Look To The Rainbow". ✨✧ Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, & Bo DiddleySuper Super Blues Band (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Checker/Jackpot, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Goin Down Slow", "Long Distance Call", "Sweet Little Angel", "Ooh Baby & Wrecking My Love Life", and "Spoonful". (Blues, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ KokomoRise & Shine! ... LP
Columbia, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Second LP from this slick British funk outfit, with a soulful jazzy edge like many of the bigger acts of their day. The record has a surprisingly tight, compressed groove, considering the band is a bunch of long haried Brits in dirty t-shirts (at least from what we can tell), but it's the mellower numbers rather than the funky ones that stand out to us, like "Angel Love", "Happy Birthday" and "Little Girl". ✨✧ SeawindWindow Of A Child ... LP
CTI, 1977. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great little album of jazzy soul – the second that Seawind cut for CTI, and very much an extension of the first! The album's got a breezy west coast fusion sound – kind of like work that was coming out of Fantasy Records, or some of the more obscure independent fusion albums at the time. Pauline Wilson sings lead vocals on most cuts – with a sound that's somewhere between Patti Austin and Lani Hall, flanged-out to give the record a great 70s sound, an approach that works well with the sweetly jazzy style of the instrumentation. Harvey Mason produced – and titles include "One Sweet Night", "Campanas De Invierno", "Window Of A Child", "Countin The Days", "Angel Of Mercy", "Lovin You", and "Do Listen To". ✨✧ Zazou BikayeMr Manager ... LP
Crammed (Belgium), 1985. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
80s Afro grooves, recorded in Belgium – given a nice twist by the Crammed Discs label, which was one of the first to really open up African styles with more European elements! Bony Bikaye handles vocals, and Hector Zazou plays plenty of keyboards and adds in beat – so there's an electro-styled groove to most cuts, in a mode that's similar to some of the New Africa material on Celluloid Records from the same time! The remaining member of the group handles lots of saxophone solos – but the trio also get some studio help that includes more saxophone from Marc Hollander. Titles include "Angel", "Mr Manager", "Nostalgie", and "Soki Akei". (Global Grooves, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lewis TaylorStoned Part 1 ... LP
Slow Reality/Be With (UK), 2002. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A groundbreaking album by soul singer Lewis Taylor – his first self-released album, issued on his own after parting company from Island Records! The album's incredible – every bit as great as the albums Lewis Taylor 1 & 2 – and in fact even better, as Lewis has a lot more freedom here to explore his own ideas. The sound is a blend of compressed rhythm and keys, filtered with Lewis' excellent vocals – deeply soulful, and instantly captivating, steeped in a tradition that stretches back to Marvin Gaye, and which makes him one of the best underground soul singers alive today. Songs are sweet, slow, slinky, and seductive – coming off amazingly well, with a deeply soulful production style that's handled a heck of a lot better than the cover! In fact, if the silly cover art's making you worry that the album won't be great, even if you're a fan of Lewis' other work – don't worry, because the music is the thing that really matters, and the whole album here is top-shelf! Titles include "Send Me An Angel", "Stoned", "Shame", "Til The Morning Light", "Positively Beautiful", "Lovelight", and "Sheneverdid". (Neo Soul, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Muddy WatersBrass & The Blues ... LP
Chess/Elemental, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A unique mid 60s Chess session from Muddy Waters – one with a very different feel than usual, and a good dose of soul too! As you might guess from the title, Muddy gets some full backings on this set – not exactly a large brass section, but a set of Chicago soul-styled backings handled by Gene Barge and Charles Stepney – grooves which, when mixed with his own bluesy guitar and vocals, creates a feel that's a bit like some of the Little Milton Chess work from the same time – blues, but with a current of some of the deeper, headier soul styles that were coming out of the Chicago scene as it was hitting that new level of sophistication in the 60s. Titles include "Hard Loser", "Going Back To Memphis", "Trouble In Mind", "Sweet Little Angel", and "Take My Advice". (Blues, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousWattstax – The Living Word ... LP
Stax, 1972. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Also includes 2 studio tracks recorded after the show – "Oh La De Da" by The Staple Singers, and "Lay Your Loving On Me" by Eddie Floyd. LP, Vinyl record album
