Ketty LesterAnthology ... LP
AVI, 1982. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Despite the title, this doesn't really seem to be an anthology of Ketty's other work – so much as it is a new set of recordings with a very traditional feel. Ketty's voice is in great form, and the backings are spare and jazzy – with arrangements by Lincoln Mayorga, in a style that's similar to some of Ketty's classic work from the 60s. Titles include "West Coast", "Secret Love", "When I Fall", "Moscow", and "That's Not The Answer". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a tiny top seam split, and is great overall!)

✨✧ Captain SkyAdventures Of Captain Sky ... LP
AVI, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A legendary funk set from late 70s Chicago – served up by our own Captain Sky, aka Daryl Cameron – an imposing figure who often worked in the same space-themed territory as the P-Funk empire in the mid 70s! The difference here, though, is that Cameron wrote, produced, and put the whole thing together himself – with help from a few friends in the studio – making the album a great homegrown attempt to rival the strength of the bigger funk ensembles of the period – something The Captain and crew do pretty darn well throughout! There's lots of heavy bass on the set – a strong precursor of modes to come – mixed with riffing guitar, sweet keyboards, and plenty of tight rhythms – on cuts that include the famous sample cut "Super Sporm" – a killer extended track with a great conga break, and a tight old school sample sound – plus "Now That I Have You", "Saturday Night Move-Ease", "Wonder Worm" and "Can't Stop Now". ✨✧ Davis ImportYou're The One ... LP
AVI, 1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An excellent EP – featuring only 3 tunes, but all very soulful! Davis Import sounds more like a disco group, but the label bills the group as Davis Brothers – which is much more in keeping with the sound of the record, as it's got a warm and mellow harmony feel. There's a great late 70s sophisti-soul harmony approach to the set – one that reminds us a lot of the work of Windy City – and although the album's only got 3 tracks, they're all pretty great. Titles include "Star Child", "You're The One", and "Shadow Fate". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label promo. Cover has some light wear, but this is a great copy overall.)

✨✧ Eastbound ExpresswayEastbound Expressway ... LP
AVI, 1979. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Classic work from female disco trio Eastbound Expressway – an Ian Levine project done in a mode to rival the great female club trios from Philly – and one that comes off surprisingly well! The work was recorded in UK, but has a style that reminds us a bit of some of the Canadian disco of the time – with long instrumental passages leading into the tunes, nice acoustic percussion bits breaking out in the mix, and vocals that are sort of filtered into the tunes as they roll on – maybe not the best credit to the Eastbound sound vocally, but still a nice way to lay things out! Titles include "Turn Back The Tide", "Better Look Before You Leap", and "Never Let Go". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label promo, with notice obscured on the labels. Cover has some ringwear, edge wear, and is lightly bent at the edges.)

✨✧ El CocoCocomotion ... LP
AVI, 1977. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of the many projects handled by AVI's Rinder & Lewis team – a jazz-inflected, keyboard-heavy duo that should be getting wider recognition with the club kids today! Side one of the album features an extended 2-parter of the great groover "Cocomotion" – done here with lots and lots of strings, catchy grooves, and great spacey keyboard work! Other tracks include "I'm Mad As Hell", "Got That Feeling", and "We Call It Disco" (they certainly do!) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ El CocoLet's Get It Together ... LP
AVI, 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Very groovy early work by El Coco – a cool mix of electric keyboards and fusiony touches, in a style that made the group a real standout on the dancefloor! At some level, the album almost operates like a jazz set – thanks to the strong keyboards of Michael Lewis and the percussion of Laurin Rinder – but there's also a smoother groove going on, and a definite shot at the clubs that stands out on some of the album's catchier tunes. The keyboards are in a very cool "spaced out" mode, and a few cuts even hit some great 70s exotica moments too. Includes remakes of "Mr Lucky" and "Quiet Village" – which should show some of the influences of the team – plus the tracks "Let's Get It Together", "Fai Le Chat", "Gimme Some", and "Put On Your Jeans". ✨✧ In Search Of Orchestra (Rinder & Lewis)In Search Of – Music From & Inspired By The Series ... LP
AVI, 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A great batch of moogy grooves from the In Search Of Orchestra – really the team of Laurin Rinder & Michael Lewis, working here on a slightly wider variation of the styles used in their dancefloor work for AVI! The album's somewhat of a soundtrack for the In Search Of TV show hosted by Leonard Nimoy – and it's a wonderful blend of keyboards and subtle funky rhythms – often at a pace that's a lot more laidback and spacious than some of the more familiar disco from Rinder & Lewis. Lewis plays a host of great keys – including Fender Rhodes, clavinet, harpsichord, and synth – and the tracks range from long to short, with plenty of great funky bits and samples in the mix. Titles include "A Taste Of Ghosts", "Time Traveler", "The Rise & Fall Of Vlad Dracula", "In Search Of", "Nazca Lines", "Easter Island Suite", and "Afterthought". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ LJ JohnsonLJ's Love Suite ... LP
AVI, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Sexy soul magic from LJ Johnson – not to be confused with ex-Dramatic LJ Reynolds, but a great singer in his own right! LJ's got a sweet vocal approach that's almost that you'd hear from earlier years, on east coast vocal group records – but here, he's working in a fuller, richer mode that often dips into disco-based territory with full arrangements, driving percussion, and a set of female voices behind LJ's own. And these upbeat tracks are all pretty nice, thanks to some Danny Leake arrangements – but our favorite numbers are the mellower ones – especially the tunes "Staring in Space" and "Things Will Work Out in the End" – both of which have this great stretched out feel, with a heavenly spacey quality that we just love! ✨✧ LowrellLowrell ... LP
AVI, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Excellent solo work by Lowrell Simon – once a singer with Lost Generation, but opening up a whole new style of Chicago soul here on his own! The album's a tasty batch of smooth soul tracks with a midtempo club groove – not disco, but with the kind of large production and loping groove that you'd find in a good Barry White album – hitting all the right mellow funky moments at once! The prime example of this is the killer "Mellow Mellow Right On" – offered up here in two long parts that take up most of side two of the original album. Other nice ones include a version of Lowrell's "Overdose Of Love", plus the tracks "Out Of Breath", "You're Playing Dirty" and "Smooth & Wild". LP, Vinyl record album

AVI, 1978. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Obscure disco work from Doris Jones – a good fit here for the upbeat arrangements of the tunes! Pip Williams handled most of the arrangements here – and all tracks were written and produced by Ian Levine – done in that sparkling style of some of his other US disco work of the late 70s. Titles include "No Way Out", "Possessed", "Time On My Hands", "Suddenly I'm Alive", and "Can't You See The Smile On My Face". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gene Barge, David Matthews, & Andre DavisStony Island – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Glades, 1978. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A sweet set of soundtrack funk – from a film named after one of our favorite streets in Chicago! Although the record's got an approach that's perhaps a bit tighter and smoother than anything going down on Stony in the late 70s, it does manage to share a good deal of styles with the Chi-soul scene of the time – thanks to work on the record from Chicagoans Gene Barge, Sonny Seals, and Tennyson Stephens! Many of the tracks on the set have a bad-walking soul approach – one that's kind of a mixture of funky and bluesy – and these are laid out next to some jazzier instrumentals that we like most of all – tunes that have a great funky soundtrack feel, but with a bit more fusion touches than usual, probably because of the work of David Matthews. Titles include "Percy Fired", "Party Lights", "High Speed Posters", "Back To Business", "Chase The Train", "Gangster City", "Dream Ride", and "Peace Of Mind". ✨✧ David BowieYoung Americans ... LP
RCA, 1975. Very Good ... $19.99
A brilliant soul album! That's right, we said SOUL album! Bowie was at the height of his Ziggy Stardust fame when this one was recorded – a drastic left-turn in styles, forged during a point in his American tour when he could take a break, head to Philly, plug in at the Sigma Sound Studios, and come up with some fantastic little soul tunes, thanks to help from Luther Vandross! The album sparkles with the best sound of Luther's early work – and you'll hear more than a bit of Luther's work on his own, and his tunes with Gregg Diamond on the set. Features the sublime tracks "Win", "Fascination", "Right", "Somebody Up There Likes Me", and "Can You Hear Me" – as well as the hits "Young Americans" and "Fame". (Rock, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

John Davis & The Monster OrchestraUp Jumped The Devil ... LP
SAM, 1977. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Prime symphonic disco from the mighty John Davis and his well-named Monster Orchestra! The set's got a dramatic flourish that still mixes in plenty of live instrumentation – including keyboards and flute from John, plus some nice congas from Larry Washington! John sings lead vocals on most cuts, but uses some cool processing to kind of space out the sound – making for a compressed and flanged-out sound that's poppy, but really compelling. And although the whole thing sounds hokey, the quality of the grooves is actually pretty great from an instrumental standpoint. Titles include "Once Upon A Time", "We Can Fly", "Up Jumped The Devil", "You Gotta Give It Up", "You're The One", "The Magic Is You", and "Recapitulation". LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny AceMemorial Album ... LP
Duke, Early 50s. Very Good- ... $29.99
The only full album from Johnny Ace – a key figure in the Memphis scene of the 50s, and one of the first great casualties of rock and roll! Johnny was one of the first singers to record for the legendary Duke label, and worked in a mode that helped transform the smoother style of the west coast postwar R&B singers into a rougher, rawer mode that would pave the way for Memphis soul in years to come. And although Johnny died a tragic early death (and partially because of it), the impact of his work was tremendous, even in the few short years for which he recorded for Duke – leading to countless posthumous collections, mostly illegitimate, which often presented Johnny's work in less-than-superior conditions. This set is still the best – and features 12 tracks that Ace recorded for the Duke label. Titles include "How Can You Be So Mean", "My Song", "The Clock", "Cross My Heart", "Anymore", "Don't You Know", "Saving My Love For You", "So Lonely", and "Pledging My Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early Duke pressing – yellow and purple label with deep groove! Cover and label have a small name in pen. Vinyl is clean, with light marks – cover is otherwise nice.)

Barbara AcklinLove Makes A Woman ... LP
Brunswick, 1968. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Barbara Acklin's first album – and a landmark of Chicago soul that firmly established Acklin as one of the city's best writers and new female singers! Acklin had a classy sound that was different than some of her raw soul sisters in the city – but although she was classy, she also didn't have any of that little girl stuff that you might hear from singers like Denice Chandler or Barbara Mason. Instead, she had an approach that mixed a real soul vocal with more sophisticated material, in a manner that worked well with the evolving blueprint for the Brunswick Chisoul sound. Carl Davis and Eugene Record do a perfect job producing Barbara's songs, all forged nicely into the loping soul groove that set Chicago apart from other cities in the late 60s. Includes the big title track "Love Makes A Woman" – plus "Be By My Side", "Your Sweet Loving", "Come and See Me Baby", and a great cover of "The Look of Love"! LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label stereo pressing. Vinyl plays with a short crackle on the first song on side 2. Cover has ring & edge wear, cutout hole, wear on the lower corner.)

✨✧ Roy AyersMystic Voyage ... LP
Polydor, 1975. Very Good- ... $13.99
An archetypal album by Roy Ayers – and one that really shows him at the turning point of his sound! Gone are the trippier jazz funk moments of earlier albums – and in their place are some tight grooves and wonderfully spacey soul. Roy hits the dancefloor with one of his first up-tempo funk numbers "Brother Green", a catchy groover with lots of clavinet, and the massive "Life Is Just A Moment", a storming 2-part number that rolls along with a pounding almost house-like groove. "Mystic Voyage" shows the sweet jazzy side of Roy – as it's a vibes-heavy instrumental with a light stepping groove, perfect for the mellow direction he'd take on other records. The album also features some great off-beat funk numbers that recall earlier albums – including the break-heavy "Spirit Of Doo Doo", plus "Funky Motion" and "The Black Five". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing! Cover has surface & edge wear, spot of marker, small split on the bottom seam.)

A classic album of classy vocals – one that helped set a whole new tone in 80s soul music! Anita had already gained a bit of experience on the soul scene before this set, but with this record she emerged as a full-formed diva who could effortlessly blend jazz and soul into a magnificent new sound. The production has a few touches that date the record a bit, but there's a timelessness to the set that was apparent to listeners the moment it was released. Titles include "Mystery", "No One In The World", "Sweet Love", "You Bring Me Joy", and "Caught Up In The Rapture". LP, Vinyl record album

Kayvette, 1978. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A killer bit of female soul by a very short-lived group – one with a great sound that comes out of some real criss-crossing of styles – some deep soul currents, but some hipper modern soul touches at the top! The set was produced by Brad Shapiro, and has a good blend of his modern and southern styles of the mid 70s – similar to his work with Candi Staton – but it also features some impeccable arrangements from David Van DePitte, who gives the record a sweeping, swaying feel that buoys the vocals up on some really soulful backings. Titles include a great version of "How Long", plus the tracks "Mr Mystery", "You Accuse Me", "Rhythm Of Love", "One Woman's Trash", and "I Can't Weigh My Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1963. Very Good+ ... $13.99
A great early album by Oscar – one that focuses on his own compositions, and a few other hip tunes written by other jazz players, with new vocals added by Oscar! These kind of tracks are the stuff that made him a legend instantly – strongly voiced vocal tunes, handled with a flair that few other singers could match, save for Jon Hendricks, who also shared Oscar's talent for crafting a jazz-based lyric. Arrangements are by Oscar's hometown talent Floyd Morris – and titles include "One Foot In the Gutter", "The Snake" (later covered by Al Wilson), "So Help Me (A Little 3/4 For God & Co)", "The Tree & Me", and marvelous lyrical versions of Miles Davis' "All Blues" and Duke Pearson's "Jeanine". Essential stuff for jazz juice fans! (Vocalists, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gene Chandler'80 ... LP
Chi Sound/20th Century, 1980. Very Good+ ... $2.99
A nice record of modern soul that got a bit overlooked at the time because of the poor fate of the Chi-Sound label. The record's filled with Chicago soul talent like Tom Tom 84, Sonny Sanders, and Carl Davis, and it's a good updating of Gene's Chicago soul sound towards a style that's more modern soul-oriented. We've got a huge soft spot for the track "Does She Have A Friend?", which is a nice two-step groover, and the LP includes a number of other nice ones like "All About The Paper", "Let Me Make Love to You", and a remake of his classic, called "Rainbow '80". Chi Sound/20th Century, 1978. Very Good+ ... $4.99
The legendary Gene Chandler gets down, and gets down good – in this classic late 70s set of clubby numbers and upbeat groovers! The set's one of the best moments on the Chi-Soul series from producer Carl Davis – and features a nicely evolved version of earlier Chicago soul modes from Tom Tom 84 and Sonny Sanders – both of whom push an older Brunswick style into some smoother, more sophisticated modern soul territory! Chandler's vocals are wonderful, as always – and have a catchy snapping feel on the groovers, mixed with surprisingly deep soul on the few mellower moments. Titles include a remake of "Please Sunrise", plus "I'm The Travelin Kind", "Get Down", "Tomorrow I May Not Feel The Same", "Greatest Love Ever Known", and "What Now". LP, Vinyl record album

Gene ChandlerWhen You're #1 ... LP
Chi Sound/20th Century, 1979. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Later work by Gene Chandler – but a surprisingly great little set overall, and proof that Carl Davis was really stretching for greatness in the glory years of his Chi Sound label! Rather than rehash the styles he'd hit with on Vee Jay, Constellation, Mercury, or Brunswick – Chandler steps out here almost as a whole new singer overall – one with surprising sensitivity for ballads, and a maturing approach that almost reminds us of Walter Jackson's same stretch on the Chi Sound label. And like Jackson, Chandler also manages to move a bit into clubby territory too – with arrangements from Tom Tom and Sonny Sanders that are quite solid overall – and almost a Chicago take on Philly. Titles include "Do What Comes So Natural", "That Funky Disco Rhythm", "When You're #1", "Dance Fever", "Stay Here In My Heart", and "I'll Remember You". LP, Vinyl record album

The tunes are blues, but not in the way that Charles first started recording on earlier singles for Atlantic – as there's a bit more class, care, and a strong current of jazz that Ray was bringing more and more to his music as the years went on. Titles include the Charles originals "Hard Times", "I Believe To My Soul", "Mr Charles Blues", "I Wonder Who", "Some Day Baby", and "Nobody Cares" – plus nice takes on "I'm Movin On" and "The Midnight Hour". The album's a bit overlooked, but has a really great groove – kind of a middle ground between The Commodores' heavier funk and mellower ballads – served up here with the tight instrumentation that always made the group a self-contained standout – and arranged and produced to perfection by the great James Anthony Carmichael. A later effort from the Dells, cut around the time ABC was having some great luck with the Detroit soul of The Dramatics – and also recorded in Detroit, with production work by the likes of Al Perkins, Rudy Robinson, and Calvin Carter, the Dells' old boss at Vee Jay. The tunes have a smoother approach than the group's work at Chess/Cadet – but their vocals are still top notch, with that raspy soul quality that has made them sound consistently strong over the years, no matter what the setting. Includes "Face To Face", "Thought I Could", "Face To Face", "Hooked On Loving You", "Love Me", "Wrapped Up Tight", and "Changed Man". Lots of nice ballads! LP, Vinyl record album
