✨✧ VariousKeep On Struttin – Imitations, Interpolations, & The Inspiration Of The Meters ... CD
Le Smoke Disque, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A massive tribute to The Meters – one that features rare versions of some of their best funky classics! If you dig The Meters, you'll no doubt recognize most of the tunes – but you've probably never heard them in these versions before – as most of them are pulled from the farthest reaches of the 60s and 70s funky underground! Most numbers change things up a bit in terms of instrumentation – using a guitar where you might normally hear an organ, tipping the rhythm a bit more towards one speed or another – but all of them continue strongly that chunky, gritty approach to instrumental funk the New Orleans combo first forged in the late 60s – a legacy that still lives on in lots of current work, but which sounds even fresher in these rare gems from years back. There's also a few original compositions by some of these artists, but they're all tunes that fall strongly within a classic Meters groove – and titles include "Cissy Strut" by Rod Piazza, "Flight Of The Phoenix" by Dennis The Fox, "Slot Machine" by Duke Of Burlington, "Cissy Strut" by King Herbert & The Knights, "Cardova" by Syd Jones & The Gay Troubadours, "The Cissy's Thang" by The Soul Seven, "Look Ka Py Py" by The Invaders, "Chicken Strut" by King Herbert & The Knights, "Madrox" by Big Band Katouuice, "Cissy Strut" by Sacramento Senior High School, "Big Splash" by Band It, and "Soul Heart Transplant" by Ebony Rhythm Band. Sydney Joe QuallsSo Sexy ... LP
20th Century, 1979. Near Mint- ... $33.99
An incredible blend of southern and modern soul – the second album by soul songwriter Sydney Joe Qualls, recorded in both Chicago and Muscle Shoals, with a stone mellow sound that's outta site! The groove here is extremely well-done – tight, but never too slick – and with a soaring quality that marks the best late 70s soul coming out of Chicago at the time, but which also has some rootsier vocals from Sydney. The album's a classic for the standout groover "I Don't Do This" – but the whole thing's pretty darn great, and tracks include "Bad Risk", "I'll Run To Your Side", "Let the Woman Know", "I Could Be So Good For You", and "Where Have You Been". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover has light ring impressions. Label on Side A has a sticker.)

Lloyd PriceMusic Music ... LP
LPG/P-Vine (Japan), Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 48.99
A killer of an album – a real corker from Lloyd, one of those singers who kept on growing tremendously after his early big hits! The album was recorded in Muscle Shoals, but it's got a smooth modern sort of finish – all compressed and slightly funky, in a manner that's partially inspired by Philly, partially by Marvin Gaye's mid 70s hits. The whole thing's extremely great – with lots of hip modern numbers that bear no resemblance whatsoever to Lloyd's early work, and which will have you going "Hey, who's that? He's really great!" A bit like Sydney Joe Qualls, Johnny Bristol, or Prince Phillip Mitchell – and with tracks that include "N'Sele", "Uphill Peace Of Mind", "Street Love", "Mr & Mrs Untrue", "What Did You Do With My Love", and "Music Music". LP, Vinyl record album
(Beautiful Japanese pressing – with obi!)

✨✧ VariousChi-Sound – Soul From The Windy City ... CD
Chi Sound/Southbound (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great collection of work from an under-documented side of the Chicago soul scene! At the end of the 70s, most of the older talent of the Chicago scene had regrouped around producer Carl Davis after the demise (thanks to tax bungling!) of the Brunswick label – under the umbrella of Davis' new Chi-Sound imprint. Great stars from years past like Gene Chandler, Walter jackson, The Chi-Lites, and The Impressions – plus a few new ones – returned to carve out some of their last great recordings – with Davis at the helm, developing a more sophisticated sound that worked great for the maturing soul artists. This set brings together 15 cuts from the glory days of Davis' Chi-Sound imprint – including "Windy City Theme" by The Windy City Orchestra, "I Don't Do This To Every Girl I Meet" by Sydney Joe Qualls, "Tomorrow I May Not Feel The Same" by Gene Chandler, "Especially For You" by Manchild, "It's All Over" by Walter Jackson, "Heavenly Body" by The Chi-Lites, and "Get Down" by Gene Chandler. BBE (UK), 1998. Used ... Out Of Stock
Easily our favorite volume in this legendary series – a mindblowing batch of grooves put together by the godlike talents of Patrick Forge! Forge's work in many genres is well known – and the set's a mix of older funk, soul, jazz, and club numbers – plus a newer tracks that really maintain the classic vibe! There's plenty of treasures here that still haven't been reissued over the years – and titles include "Nothing's Changed" by Ten City, "Summer Bummer" by Crazy Penis, "Send In The Clowns" by Lorez Alexandria, "Motivation" by Atmosfear, "The Way We Live" by Raw Soul Express, "Berimbau De Ossanha" by Easydelics, "Guiro Electro" by Bobby Matos, "Spring Again" by Kevin Yost, "In Good Faith" by Norman Harris, "Straight Ahead" by Brooklyn Express, and "African Mailman" by Nina Simone.
