A fantastic collection of work from The Rah Band – a late 70s group who were never that big on the US scene, but who were a key part in helping the UK move from earlier electronic experiments into some of the more catchy grooves of the decade to come! At the start, Rah Band had maybe more of an electronic approach that was tied to the generation of moog instrumentals and other crossover instrumental records – thanks in part to the skills of mainman Richard Hewson – but as these records progress, the group also pick up plenty of warmer instrumentation too, especially on guitar and saxes – so that there's a fusion current at times, but mixed with elements that would show up more strongly in 80s electro soul too – all of which make the group a very important precursor to so many trends to come! The three albums in this set – Crunch & Beyond, Rah Band, and Going Up – are all filled with plenty of sweet keyboards, and an increasing sense of groove – and the package also adds in rare bonus tracks to each full album, then includes two full CDs of remix tracks and rarities – all of which makes for a massive package of 71 titles in all – the most we've ever seen from the group on CD! Funky soul from this fantastic female duo – a pair who work here with plenty of help from Harry Wayne Casey and Richard Finch of KC & The Sunshine Band – and who get plenty of that group's elements in their rhythms! One way to think of this set is as the best funk from KC and crew, topped with two female vocalists who are recorded together with a production mode that then stretches out the vocals – creating the same spacey touches as KC's songs, but with a touch of female disco energy too – yet one that's very different than some of the weaker trio gals who just sing along with fuller backings. Killer work from one of the smokinest soul labels of the west coast scene of the 60s – mighty Mirwood Records, a company that's kept the Northern Soul scene humming for decades! Four classic albums from this hip British soul group – issued here in a single set, with bonus tracks too! First up is New Religion – a record that was also released in America by Atlantic Records. Although they were a UK soul act, Jimmy James and The Vagabonds were a perfect match for the Atlantic soul stable of the 60s. The group had a smooth group style that was partly uptown, partly northern soul – as clearly illustrated in this album, which is divided up into a "mood red: you feel like leaping" side, and a "mood blue: you feel like digging deeper" side. The band chose some good material that really helps them maintain a solid socking soul sound – including "The Entertainer" and "Ain't Love Good, Ain't Love Proud" by Tony Clarke, "Ain't No Big Thing" and "I'm Just A Fool For You Girl" by Gerald Sims, and "Little Boy Blue" and "People Get Ready" by Curtis Mayfield. Also features "Come To Me Softly", a sweet dreamy ballad by Jimmy, and kind of a bit crossover hit for the boys. London Swings is two-sided monster – as the album was originally split with work from the Alan Bown Set too! Here, the CD features just the live material from the soul group – a smoking performance from Jimmy James & The Vagabonds – one that goes way past the sweetness of their hits, and which has a crowd-pleasing, party-hearty approach to soul that's really great! Jimmy and the group serve up versions of "Sock It To Em JB", "That Driving Beat", "Ain't Too Proud To Beg", "You Don't Know Like I Know", and "Don't Know What I'm Gonna Do". Brilliant later work from the Young Holt Unlimited combo – 2 albums that really stand apart from the rest of their recordings! Born Again is a sophisticated batch of jazzy tracks that really opens the group's style up – going way way past the stock soul of some of their Brunswick recordings. The band's clearly taken on a more spiritual bent for this one – as you can probably guess from the Afro-madonna cover – and the music ranges from electric funk to trippier more spiritual numbers. The record features hip keyboards by Ken Chaney, Marylean Holt, and a young Bobby Lyle. Cash McCall plays guitar on a great reading of Richard Evans "Hot Pants" – and other tracks include "Luv Bugg", "Wah Wah Man", and "Save The Day". Mellow Dreamin is one of the group's wildest and most beautiful LPs – really pushing the sound to a freer-thinking style of soul with a myriad of interesting rhythms, strange instrumentation, and uncanny arrangements! The best proof of this is their fantastic take on "Midnight Cowboy" from the set – done with an insane breakdown, funky piano, and this cool trumpet line playing counterpoint to the piano as the track goes on! The whole set's great, though, and features some great originals by piano player Ken Chaney, like "The Creeper" and "Trippin" – plus the cuts "Mellow Dreamin", "The Devil Made Me Do Dat", and "Black & White".
