✨✧ Marta KubisovaNe – The Soul Of Marta Kubisova ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Damn soulful work from Marta Kubisova – a late 60s singer from Czechoslovakia who was so groovy, she was banned by the Communist Party! This excellent set brings together rare tracks by Marta from the prime early years of her career – all numbers that feature very Western soul-styled backings, with plenty of funk in the mix too – and some of the odder, more offbeat arrangements you might get in the music of singers like Doris or France Gall! There's an undercurrent of pop-psyche too – which would make this package just right for the Finders Keepers camp – and our hat's off to the Vampi Soul empire for doing such a great job with this wonderful material. 25 tracks in all – with titles that include "Tajga Blues 69", "Hare Krisna", "Chci Pravo Trubky Mit", "Bily Stul", "Svlikam Lasku", "Tak Dej Se K Nam A Projdem Svet", "Ne", "Jakoby Nic", "Nepis Dal", "Ten Zlej Pav", "Modrej Vres", and "Cervencove Rano". (Vocalists, Rock) CD

✨✧ BeatlesSgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band ... CD
Capitol/Apple, 1967. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Hard to deny the lasting power of this crucial album from The Beatles – a set that unleashed some of their trippiest sounds and most tender moments too! The mix of wit and honesty is wonderful – and the sonic range is dynamic as the archetypal cover image – a package that's had an undeniable impact on modern music for the past few decades! Titles include "With A Little Help From My Friends", "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", "She's Leaving Home", "Lovely Rita", "When I'm Sixty Four", "A Day In The Life", and "Fixing A Hole". CD

Blue CheerNew! Improved! ... CD
Philips/Linam (Germany), 1969. Used ... $22.99
This Blue Cheer record, their first of 2 in 1969, has a different lineup on each side–with Bruce Stephens on guitar, tortoise shell, & sandblocks, and Burns Kellogg on piano & organ on the somewhat more bluesy & song-oriented Side 1, while Randy Holden takes over guitar & vocals for the much heavier psych-rock approach on Side 2. Titles include "When It All Gets Old", "I Want My Baby Back", "Aces'N'Eights", "Peace Of Mind", "Honey Buter Lover", and the mind-melting "Fruit & Iceburgs". CD
(1991 pressing – still sealed!)

Leonard CohenSongs Of Love & Hate ... CD
Columbia, 1971. Used ... $3.99
One of the more heavily brooding albums ever cut by Leonard Cohen – and also one of the best – the iconic Songs Of Love And Hate from 1971! Cohen's aptly titled third LP, with the nice spare approach to production that most of his early work had, even more stripped down, with voice and acoustic guitar the focus, and some tasteful, more lush texture when the mood strikes – and oh so incredible wordplay and phrasing from the iconic maverick poet/songwriter. Classic bummers including "Avalanche", "Last Year's Man", "Dress Rehearsal Rag", "Diamonds In The Mine", "Love Calls You By Your Name", "Famous Blue Raincoat", "Sing Another Song, Boys" and "Joan Of Arc". CD

ColoursColours ... CD
Dot/World Psychedelia (Korea), 1968. Used ... $11.99
One of the best American psyche albums we've heard from the late 60s – a near-perfect record that's head and shoulders above the rough experimentation of most other groups from the period! Colours spell their name with a definite British twist, and there's clearly a Beatles influence going on here – a sound that's almost pre-Sgt Peppers, but which has wonderfully complicated time changes, vocal parts, and production techniques that must have cost a pretty penny to such a little-known group! Horns and strings are arranged by Dave Roberts, and handled with a sensitivity that almost matches The Zombies' best at times – and the tunes themselves are a fresh variety of odd themes, including one number about robbing a liquor store. Titles include "Brother Lou's Love Colony", "Bad Day At Black Rock Baby", "Love Heals", "Rather Be Me", "I'm Leaving", "Cataleptic", "Don't You Realize", and "Lovin". CD

✨✧ Bob DylanBob Dylan Live 1975 – The Bootleg Series Vol 5 – The Rolling Thunder Revue ... CD
Columbia, 1975. Used 2 CDs ... $6.99
A pretty amazing 70s moment from Bob Dylan – a legendary tour that was a bit of a rock and roll circus on wheels – hence, perhaps, the unique name of the tour! Bob's in a very collaborative spirit here – working with famous guests who include Mick Ronson, Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, Joni Mitchell, Ronee Blakely and Ramblin' Jack Elliott – all in an upbeat mode that surfaced most strongly on some of Dylan's tracks on the Desire album, which was issued during the two legs of the tour. CD
(Includes slicpase, large booklet and bonus DVD, which is still sealed!)

✨✧ Francoise HardyMidnight Blues – Paris/London 1968 to 1972 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $8.99
Rare English language recordings from the sublime Francoise Hardy – music that's every bit as wonderful as her famous French recordings – and even more compelling to our Anglo-styled ears! The vocals are wonderful – sung with this sense of darkness that's almost got an echo of Nico at points, given the accent – set to backings that balance this darkness with a bit more light, but never in ways that are overly poppy – and which definitely continue that more sophisticated style that Hardy always brought to her music! There's less "yeh yeh" to the tracks than a few years before – and Francoise is definitely digging deeper music at this point in her career – sometimes with a breathy brilliance that's a bit like Jane Birkin too. Titles include "Bown Bown Bown", "Till The Morning Comes", "Loving You", "In The Sky", "Midnight Blues", "Magic Horse", "Song Of Winter", "Strange Shadows", "Ocean", "The Garden Of Jane Delawney", "Sometimes", "Let My Name Be Sorrow", "Times Passing By", "I Just Want To Be Alone", and "Suzanne". (French, Rock) CD

✨✧ Jazz Passengers with Deborah Harry & Elvis CostelloIndividually Twisted ... CD
32 Jazz, 1996. Used ... $1.99
A surprising 90s set from The Jazz Passengers – the New York group who'd worked in many modes other than just the straight jazz you might guess from their name, but who here maybe take things back to basics, especially on some of the cuts that bring in vocals from famous guests who include Deborah Harry and Elvis Costello! In some ways, Harry is the core of the set – as she unlocks this great jazz-based side of her style, in a way that gives her voice a whole new level of expression – one that's surprisingly strong next to the instrumentation provided by Roy Nathanson, Curis Fowlkes, and the rest of the group. Elvis Costello sings moodily on the tune "Aubergine" – but most other vocal numbers feature Deborah Harry, and include "Pork Chop", "Lil Darlin", "Maybe I'm Lost", "Imitation Of A Kiss", "Ole", and "Angel Eyes". Harry and Costello duet on "Doncha Go Way Mad" – and the set also features a nice instrumental remake of the Nat Adderley tune "Jive Samba". (Jazz, Rock) CD
(Out of print.)
