An obscure bit of late 60s Stax! Steve Cropper's working away from the MG's here, in a mode that's slightly similar, but which has his guitar upfront in the mix on a batch of Memphis-style instrumentals – kind of his own take on the groove he was laying down with Booker T, but with a lot less organ in the mix! There's no mad funk on the album, but the whole thing's pretty darn nice – and is proof that Cropper was the key element in more than just a bit of the Stax sound at the time – a really strong artist who could more than stand on his own. We totally love the extended "Taxi Music" – which shows up for most of the first side, and as a dub on the flip – it's a wicked post-punk electronic number that still blows us away time and time again. The album's a perfect portrait of the Northern UK scene at its best – moodiness that never falls into goth cliches, electronics that distill the experiments of the 70s with post-punk energy, and rhythms that point to the dancefloor but never in a way that's really dance music at all – just pulsatingly hypnotic, in a way that somehow makes the other qualities even more eerie! One of our favorite projects from the early years of Chris & Cosey – music done for a video release, but still very much like their own studio records of the time – yet with less vocals, and more sonic elements in the mix – so that the whole thing feels like a rare nugget from the farther reaches of the cold wave years! As with Cabaret Voltaire and some of their other contemporaries, music for videos and films always really seemed to open up different sides of the electronic artists of the period – elements that sometimes brought in a richer sense of feeling, but also a greater sense of freedom too – as they were shifting their sounds for the images, not the confines of a vocal tune. Penza Penza are one of Misha's most lively projects – and the group have this energy that draws on classic American instrumental soul from the 60s and 70s, but trips things out nicely in that style that Panfilov does so well with other acts – a slight dose of psychedelic colorings around the edges, but never in a way that obscures the sharp instrumentation at the core! The big second album from Sky – a record that's twice as long as the first, and which gives the group even more room for instrumental explorations! As before, the guitar sounds here are both acoustic and electric – played by both John Williams, the virtuoso musician with classical roots, and Kevin Peek, who's got more rock experience – and the group also features really strong keyboards from Francis Monkman, plus bass from the great Herbie Flowers, and thundering drums from Tristan Fry! The sound is a balance of fullness and space – much more so than other fusion records of this nature – and while Williams' solos sometimes have older elements in their phrasing, the overall sound is pretty progressive – in the best 70s mainstream way. The continuing genius of this really wonderful series – just about the only way you'll get to hear this wealth of work from the UK electro scene of the early 80s – most of which was only released on cassette at the time! These tracks follow strongly on the electronic sounds of scenes like Sheffield or Manchester – work that's much more underground than material by groups like New Order or Cabaret Voltaire – with maybe more of the darkness of the latter in their earliest days, and a continuing legacy to the starker, minimal modes – even when the songs have a bit of vocals. John Savage offers us a mighty nice look at the years of post-disco, and post-post-punk – served up here in a great mix of music from a time when soulful styles were mixing it up with returning rock on the dancefloor! A second entry in this very cool series, but one that's very different than the first – as the "driving" in the title means that most of these tracks have a very cool groove – kind of the darker side of new club music styles of the time, with maybe just a hint of the cold wave generation to come! Given how far back this material goes, the set shows just how much German experiments influenced the rise of UK electronic work in the post-punk generation of early Human League and Cabaret Voltaire – as there's a link here with some of the darker sounds on Rough Trade during that period, and much of the material serves as a great bridge between Krautrock of earlier days and the German new wave of the 80s.
