✨✧ David BowieBlackstar ... CD
ISO/Columbia, 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
David Bowie's late career peak arrived just days before he left us! The preceding record The Next Day was a solid reminder of Bowie at his fuzz guitar-graced 70s best, while still standing firm in the here-and-now, yet we still sort of wished for more creatively daring work. Here it is! Once again, Bowie co-produces with Tony Visconti, but it's clear from the start that they're going for something deeper and more complex. Chilling bits of strings, keyboards and sputtering beats begin the epic title track, before Bowie's voice comes in like a spirtual guide – approaching Scott Walker territory here – augmented by sax and other cool touches. It's an amazing start to an unpredictable set of songs, each as hypnotic as the one before. The stranger vibe of the opener comes in and out as the album plays on, but there's some fuzzier and heavier bits, too – on songs that are enigmatic and anthemic, arty and accessible. Incredible! Other titles include '"Tis A Pity, She Was A Whore", "Lazarus", "Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime)", "Girl Loves Me", "Dollar Days" and "I Can't Give Everything Away". CD

✨✧ Johnny CashJohnny Cash At San Quentin – Complete 1969 Concert (remastered edition) ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
Johnny returns to prison for another incredible set, released in its entirety for the first time with the 9 songs left off of the original LP! Like the Folsom gig, the set was captured by producer Bob Johnston, who also so masterfully recorded Bob Dylan at his most primal. Unlike the Folsom set, in which Johnny was famously accompanied by the Tennessee Three, the San Quentin band was fleshed out to include all of the still performing Carter women, Carl Perkins and the Statler Brothers. Another breathtaking prison recording, featuring the famous version of "A Boy Named Sue" where you hear the crowd going completely nuts. Tracks include "I Walk The Line", "Darlin' Companion", "San Quentin", "Wanted Man", "There'll Be Peace In The Valley", "Ring Of Fire", "He Turned The Water Into Wine", "Daddy Sang Bass", "I Don't Know Where I'm Bound" and more. 18 tracks in all, with lots of previously unreleased photos and essays, including some insight from Merle Haggard – who had, uh, his own little gig at San Quentin if you catch my meaning. (Folk/Country, Rock) CD

✨✧ Luv'd OnesTruth Gotta Stand ... CD
Beat Rocket, Mid 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A very hip group from the Michigan scene of the 60s – an all-female outfit, but one with a sound that's a lot more raw than the sweet girl group sounds you might be expecting! The Luv'd Ones have a great way with a bassline and sinister guitar riff – at a level that often gives these tracks a garagey vibe that's really outta sight, and which is even more surprising when the vocals come into play with the instrumentation – very different than other 60s standards, with a quality that really sets these guys apart from the pack! The set brings together rare singles and a number of unissued tracks – all to make for a lost girl rock treasure that includes the titles "Scratchy", "Please Get Up", "He Cried", "Dance Kid Dance", "Stand Tall", "Yeah I'm Feelin Fine", "The Memory Of It All", "Up Down Sue", "Truth Gotta Stand", "Walk Me Too The Door", and "Stand Tall". ✨✧ Captain BeefheartDoc At The Radar Station ... CD
Virgin/Caroline, 1980. Used ... Out Of Stock
Not everyone digs the later Captain and crew, but the early 80s efforts have finally gotten their just props after all these years – and we'll we'll come right out and say that this second to last album before Don Van Vliet hung up the music for painting has always sounded great to us! The Magic Band is incredible as always – with Jeff Morris Tepper, Drumbo French and Eric Drew Feldman's antics under the Captain's idiosyncratic vocalese. With "Hot Head", "Ashtray Heart", "A Carrot Is As Close As A Rabbit Gets To A Diamond", "Run Paint Run Run", "Sue Egypt", "Brickbats", "Dirty Blue Gene", "Best Batch Yet", "Telephone", "Flavor Bud Living", "Sherriff Of Hong Kong" and "Making Love To A Vampire With A Monkey On My Knee". BandStage Fright (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol/Toshiba (Japan), 1970. Used ... $14.99
A fantastic classic from The Band – a set that's hardly got them cowering in the corner the way the "stage fright" title might imply – and which instead seems to have the group at their most confident during the early years, effortlessly spinning impeccable musicianship and some surprisingly biting lyrics! The young Robbie Robertson is on guitar, Garth Hudson warms things up with organ lines, and vocals are handled by the shifting array of other players in the lead – Rick Danko, Levon Helm, and Richard Manuel. Titles include "The Shape I'm In", "Sleeping", "Strawberry Wine", "Just Another Whistle Stop", "Daniel & The Sacred Harp", "Stage Fright", and "Time To Kill". CD reissue includes an alternate take of "Daniel & The Sacred Harp", two alternate mixes, and a radio commercial. CD
(2004 Japanese pressing in a cool textured sleeve – includes obi and a photo of the group that wraps around the cover. Barcode has a very small cutout mark.)

✨✧ Chicago Underground Duo12 Degrees Of Freedom ... CD
Thrill Jockey, 1999. Used ... $2.99
Very nice stuff from the duo of Chad Taylor and Rob Mazurek, two players who are currently among some of the best in Chicago's hot jazz/rock crossover scene. Taylor plays percussion and vibes, Mazurek plays cornet, piano, and flute – and the pair are joined by guitarist Jeff Parker on a number of tracks. Titles include "The Pursued", "Not Quite Dark Yet and The Stars Shining Above The Withered Fields", "Lemon Grass", and "The Big Bang Theory". (Jazz, Rock) CD

Bob DylanBob Dylan Live 1975 – The Bootleg Series Vol 5 – The Rolling Thunder Revue ... CD
Columbia, 1975. Used 2 CDs ... $6.99
A pretty amazing 70s moment from Bob Dylan – a legendary tour that was a bit of a rock and roll circus on wheels – hence, perhaps, the unique name of the tour! Bob's in a very collaborative spirit here – working with famous guests who include Mick Ronson, Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, Joni Mitchell, Ronee Blakely and Ramblin' Jack Elliott – all in an upbeat mode that surfaced most strongly on some of Dylan's tracks on the Desire album, which was issued during the two legs of the tour. CD

FugsFugs First Album (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Fug Records/Ace (UK), 1965. Used ... $9.99
The legendary first album by The Fugs – a set that was first issued on Folkways Records, then later on ESP – and which is maybe a perfect bridge between these different underground worlds in the 60s! Ed Sanders, Tuli Kupferberg, Peter Stampfel, and the others are clearly budding hippies – but there's also a quality here that's different than the scene a few years later – maybe pulled equally from the late beat world, and the underground film world – no surprise, as Harry Smith produced the record for the group, and really has a great ear for their rootsier elements on acoustic instruments. The whole thing was recorded in two afternoon sessions in 1965, and still remains a record with surprising power after all these years – on titles that include "Slum Goddess", "Swinburn Stomp", "Supergirl", "Boobs A Lot", "My Baby Done Left Me", and "I Couldn't Get High". CD adds in 11 more bonus tracks - additional material from the original sessions – plus material recorded at the Night Of Napalm at St Marks place in 1965! CD
(1993 UK pressing. Disc has light bronzing on the label side, play side looks great.)
