Takayanagi Masayuki & New DirectionsIndependence – Tread On Sure Ground ... LP
Teichiku/Cinedelic (Italy), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 39.99
A fantastically free session from the Japanese scene of the late 60s – a set that really points the way towards some of the more dramatic, dynamic guitar-based expression to come in later decades! The group's a trio, with guitarist Takayanagi Masayuki very firmly in the lead – playing his instrument in a range of compelling ways – bowing the strings one minute, plucking with Derek Bailey-like complexity the next – sometimes with heavy drums and bass, other times standing out in very free solo space. The whole album's got a very freely improvised feel, and stands as an early link between free jazz and experimental rock modes - with tracks that include "Piranha", "Herdsman's Pipe Of Spain", "The Galactic System", "Sick Sick Sickness My Aunt", and "Study No 3 Up & Down". (Jazz, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition!)

✨✧ Charlie RichLonely Weekends ... LP
Sun, Late 50s. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 24.99
A classic full length collection of work from the great Charlie Rich – a singer who, we'll freely admit, is our favorite artist to ever record for Sun Records! And yeah, we know that Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and Jerry Lee Lewis also recorded for the label – but of them all Rich seemed to be the best at really honing in on that unique Tennessee crossroads of rock and blues, country and soul – served up perfectly in early material like this! Sun cut Charlie in some really great modes, and made fantastic use of that vocal approach that was maybe only second to Elvis on the Memphis scene (although we think Charlie's actually better, and more adaptable) – and titles here include the classic "Lonely Weekends", plus "Stay", "Rebound", "That's How Much I Love You", "Juanita", "You're Gonna Be Waitin", "CC Rider", "Whirlwind", and "Break Up". (Folk/Country, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album
(Remastered from the original mono tapes!)

✨✧ Steely DanCan't Buy A Thrill ... LP
ABC, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $49.99
The first album from Steely Dan, and already a leading light in the world of 70s rock! The album's got a bit less of the polish of later years, but is still filled with gems – the kind of tunes that nobody ever seemed to pen before, and which few other groups could match later – despite the countless legions who tried! There's less jazz too, but the guitars are all nice and strong – that sharp Skunk Baxter edge that helped get the group firmly onto the charts right away. Titles include "Do It Again", "Dirty Work", "Kings", "Midnite Cruiser", "Only A Fool Would Say That", "Reelin' In The Years", "Fire In The Hole", "Brooklyn (Owes The Charmer Under Me)", "Change Of The Guard", and "Turn That Heartbeat Over Again". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label pressing with rainbow logo in the gatefold cover.)

Steely DanGreatest Hits ... LP
ABC, 1970s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
We've always considered Steely Dan one of the quintessential 70s "Album Oriented Rock" bands, in that all of there albums work so well as a whole, so the idea of a greatest hits collection doesn't exactly work for us. Still, taken out of context, these songs are still gems, and listening to them in sequence really lets you hear the groups progression from their intellectual rock roots to their later sophisticated jazz influenced style. 18 tracks in all: "Do It Again", "Reeling InThe Years", "My Old School", "Bodhisattva", "Show Biz Kids", "East St Louis Toodle Oo", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Pretzel Logic", "Any Major Dude", "Here At The Western World", "Black Friday", "Bad Sneakers", "Doctor Wu", "Haitian Divorce", "Kid Charlemagne", "The Fez", "Peg" and "Josie". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label pressing in a non-textured cover. Labels have a name in pen. Cover has light wear and notes in pen.)
