✨✧ ArgentArgent ... LP
Epic, 1969. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Rod Argent's project immediately after the breakup of the Zombies! There's plenty of Zombie-like ideas here – particularly those floating around the Odyssey and Oracle album, but they're also done without the dreamy pop style of Colin Blunstone's vocals, which makes for a much harder sound overall. Added into that the guitar of Russ Ballard, which really kicks into the tunes nicely, and you've got some great rock and roll work – written with a pop sensibility, but played with a razor-sharp edge that's pretty hard hitting. Titles include "Like Honey", "Liar", "Schoolgirl", "Bring You Joy", "Stepping Stone", and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label pressing, including lyric insert. Vinyl plays with a light 'swoosh' at the beginning of each side.)

✨✧ Dead KennedysFresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables ... LP
Cherry Red (UK), 1980. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Landmark work from The Dead Kennedys – and maybe still one of the greatest punk records to ever come from the American scene! There's so much here that so many other records are missing – razor-sharp instrumentation, a great sense of pacing, and most importantly, a biting wit that always keeps the whole thing from ever lapsing into any sort of over-serious cliches! Yet unlike their LA contemporaries, the group were also never ones to just lay into the jokes – as the political commentary here is especially pointed, and nearly every single song is a blistering attack on late 70s California mores and national obsessions. Every track's a gem – and titles include "Kill The Poor", "Forward To Death", "Let's Lynch The Landlord", "Your Emotions", "Holiday In Cambodia", "California Uber Alles", and "Stealing People's Mail" – plus a killer cover of "Viva Las Vegas". Rough Trade/Kill Rock Stars, Late 1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
Fantastic work from Delta 5 – one of our favorite groups from the UK post-punk years, and a group whose funky, dubby approach to punk rivals the best work by groups like The Slits or Gang Of Four! Like both groups, they have smart songs with interesting lyrics – but focused down right into the groove, with lots of heavy interplay between bass and guitar – captured with a razor-sharp sound, and that inherent sense of darkness we love in so many productions from the time! Female singer Ros Allen is in the lead, really belting out the tunes with a great sort of edge – and the set includes the group's three rare singles on Rough Trade, plus BBC sessions and live material – making for an overdue full length collection from these years. Titles include their classic "Mind Your Own Business" – plus "Now That You've Gone", "Try", "Colour", "Make Up", "Triangle", "Innocenti", "Train Song", "Anticipation", "Final Scene", "Shadow", "Circuit", and "Journey". ✨✧ Fleetwood MacMr Wonderful ... LP
Blue Horizon, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The cover image may look a bit sinister, but the album's a perfect early example of the genius of Fleetwood Mac during their heavy blues years – a non-nonsense approach to the music that still manages to move the whole genre forward from the styles of the mod generation! The legendary Peter Green is in amazing form on guitar – maybe not as experimental as on records to come, but already able to challenge his inspirations with razor-sharp dexterity and a real sense of feeling. The rest of the group features Mick Fleetwood on drums, John McVie on bass, and Jeremy Spencer on slide guitar and piano – and titles include the originals "Stop Messin Around", "Rollin Man", "Love That Burns", "Evenin Boogie", "Trying So Hard To Forget", and "Coming Home". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original UK stereo pressing! Cover has light wear, and a very light bit of pen – but overall this is a great copy.)

✨✧ GrasshoppersLet It Be That Way ... CD
Beat Rocket, Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever full length set from The Grasshoppers – a killer combo who made plenty of waves on the live music scene in the Twin Cities during the 60s, but one who only ever issued a single 45 at the time! Yet despite that lack of wax, the group have the sort of razor sharp sound that so many hard working combos of the generation had – really tight, groovy performances of material that's mostly original by members of the group – served up with twin guitars, bass, drums, and these great vocals from lead singer Jiggs Lee – an artist who knows how to put just the right sort of presence in the music! The whole thing is plenty darn catchy, and has the feel of stumbling onto a cool combo at some great backroom gig during these key years of homegrown scenes – on titles that include "Watch People", "Let It Be That Way", "Lonely Me", "Paper Cup Beggar", "Riding In My Car", "Still In Love With You Baby", "Sugar & Spice", and "Our Love". Wonderful work from The Hollies – from a time when the group was moving way past simple Brit Invasion pop – as you 'can probably guess from the cover and title! The Hollies hit a really special sort of sound here – slightly trippy, but still razor-sharp – making great use of the voice of Graham Nash, and also getting some perfect assistance on arrangements from Mike Vickers – who knows how to be ambitious with arrangements, but still keep things very focused! The tunes are overflowing with new ideas, but are still super-catchy too – and titles include "Water On The Brain", "Then The Heartaches Begin", "Rain On The Window", "Games We Play", "Lullaby To Tim", and "When Your Light Turned On". Vicor (Philippines), 1973. New Copy ... $3.99 14.99
Juan De La Cruz is a band, not a guy – and they're one of the hardest rocking combos of the far east in the early 70s! The trio's propelled strongly by some razor-sharp guitar from Wally Gonzales – a player who stands mightily with some of the biggest British names of a few years before – but who's all the more compelling because of his lack of commercial fame in this scene. Vocals are often in that same blues-into-rock mode initiated by the Rolling Stones – but are often taken to weirder, wilder territory overall. Titles include "Round & Round", "I Wanna Say Yeah", "Take You Home", "Shake Your Brains", and "Big Boss Man". CD

KinksEverybody's In Showbiz ... LP
RCA, 1972. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
An overlooked gem from The Kinks – a set that's got all the wit of their late 60s material, a bit of the rootsy currents of Muswell Hillbillies, and a lot more bite than the group would have in some of their next few albums to come! Ray Davies' pen is razor-sharp, as is his vocal approach – and the songs are maybe even more gritty than the group would have done a few years before – furthered by some of the instrumental currents that also bring in a few acoustic elements and some Americanized riffs, which are then also matched by an occasional twang in Ray's vocal presentation. Plus, the double-length set also features one album of studio material, and a second live album – almost as a "bonus" thrown in for good measure. Studio tracks include the hit "Celluloid Heroes", plus "Here Comes Yet Another Day", "Maximum Constipation", "Unreal Reality", "Hot Potatoes", "Motorway", and "Supersonic Rocket Ship" – and live cuts include "Skin & Bone", "Alcohol", "Banana Boat Song", "Lola", "Holiday", and "Mr Wonderful". Polydor/Return To Analog (Canada), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 23.99
Great work from Maneige – a French Canadian group who work in an instrumental mode that's partly jazz, and partly prog – but very much their own sort of vibe! The group had already cut some other excellent records before this one, and they're razor-sharp throughout – tight, but never in any sort of smooth fusion way – in part because the music has a great sense of humanity, which comes especially from the flute and alto work of Alain Bergeron, whose solos really hang in the special space that the group created. There's both a drummer and percussionist on the set – next to piano, guitars, and bass – and those added elements really help give the music an organic quality, and offset the electric instrumentation. Titles include "Bagdad", "Celebration", "La Noce", "Miro Vibro", "Troizix", and "L'Envol Des Singes Latins". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ PretendersPretenders ... LP
Sire, 1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest mainstream rock and roll debuts of all time – and a record that still blows away just about any other later work by The Pretenders! The set's got this raw, sneering power that's neither punk, nor new wave – but which seems to be very much of that moment – a very unique blend of the group's Ohio roots and their London experience – honed to razor-sharp perfection, but never slick or polished at all. Chrissie Hynde is quite far from her ballad modes, and brings this raw, adult vibe to the record that really sets a whole new level for women in rock – never sweet, but never sexed-up either – standing as firmly in the group alongside her masculine cohorts as she does on the cover. Production is great – oddly dark in all the right ways, but with a very simple elegance – and the album's near-perfect from start to finish – with tracks that include "Precious", "The Phone Call", "Tattooed Love Boys", "Private Life", "Kid", "The Wait", and "Mystery Achievement". Prime live material from the Ramones – recorded on the final night of 1977, right when the group was at the height of their power! If you ever got a chance to see The Ramones back in the day, the sound was really amazing – every bit as short, sharp, and focused as the studio records – but even more so, as the group would work through their set list with razor-sharp intensity, almost this juggernaut of punk rock sound that never lets up from start to finish! That quality is definitely in place here, as the whole thing tears through an incredible set list that includes "California Sun", "Rockaway Beach", "Teenage Lobotomy", "I Wanna Be A Good Boy", "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker", "Suzy Is A Headbanger", "I Don't Care", "Havana Affair", "We're A Happy Family", "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue", "Let's Dance", "Chainsaw", "Do You Wanna Dance", "You're Gonna Kill That Girl", "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment", "Glad To See You Go", and "Blitzkrieg Bop". The searing second album from Sugarloaf – a set that has Jerry Corbetta wailing even more heavily on the organ than before, and the group working with the kind of razor-sharp intensity that made them such a big act at the time! Corbetta also handles most of the lead vocals, but the group draws plenty of strength from an ability to harmonize warmly too – not in the softer modes of some of their contemporaries, but with a soaring vibe that really works well with the edges on the guitar, and the full-on bass and drums that propel the whole album along! A pair of records from this important early 70s group! First up is the fantastic debut from Sugarloaf – a group who managed to use the Hammond organ in ways that were just as strong as the guitar in most other groups! The approach here seems to draw a lot from all the best changes taking place in soulful jazz – as Jerry Corbetta manages his keyboards with this lean quality that's wonderful, and balanced with the bass, drums, and guitar in this perfect way – almost funky at many moments, and still pretty damn sharp even if not! You'll probably know that quality from the group's classic hit "Green Eyed Lady" – but it really shines through on the whole album, on titles that include "Bach Doors Man", "Chest Fever", "Things Gonna Change Soon", and "Train Kept A Rollin". Numero, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
Numero Group does it again – and manages to pull together all the best bits from the crucially overlooked powerpop scene in the Land Of Lincoln – a wealth of wonderful groups from the 70s and 80s, all of whom recorded great indie sounds in Illinois! Sure, you've heard of Cheap Trick, and maybe The Kind – but Illinois was also home to handfuls of other great groups – many of whom never found national fame, due to lack of access to the kind of A&R that groups on the coast were getting. The sound here is wonderful – razor sharp guitars, super-tight drums, and tuneful lyrics that still burst forth with plenty of power – a great reminder that not all the hot energy of the late 70s was going into punk rock. As usual, Numero's overdone themselves with the package – lots of info on the groups, and the kind of stylish package that even goes way beyond most of the original records too. VariousButtons – From Champaign To Chicago ... LP
Numero, 1970s/1980s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
Titles include "At Practice" by Band Jocks, "Get Away" by Julian Leal, "I Wanna Make You" by Prettyboys, "Midnight Girls" by Eyz, "Where Are You Now" by Tom Orsi, "More & More" by Lay Z, "See You Tonight" by Contra-Band, "Kyle" by Loose Lips, "Total Insanity" by The Kind, "So Lifelike" by The Jerks, and "I Have Always Loved You" by Paul. ✨✧ ZZ TopZZ Top's First Album ... LP
London, 1970. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The fantastic first album from ZZ Top – already a heady mix of Texas blues and psych roots, served up into a style that's completely the group's own – but which hasn't yet been watered down by commercial cliches and MTV! The sound here really puts these guys much more in the company of the fantastic Texas garage psych scene of the late 60s – with a really strong focus on the amazing guitar of Billy Gibbons, and the way he can compact down so many elements into one very unique tone – but without ever having to show off as a blues rocker either. The blend is perfect, the edge is razor sharp, and even if these guys never had any later hits, the record would have been an underground gem! Titles include "Neighbor Neighbor", "Shaking Your Tree", "Brown Sugar", "Squank", "Going Down To Mexico", "Backdoor Love Affair", and "Just Got Back From Baby's". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label stereo pressing in the textured cover, with some ringwear, tiny blemishes and stained spots, and a bit of pen in back.)

RezillosCan't Stand The Rezillos/Mission Accomplished But The Beat Goes On ... CD
Sire, 1978/1979. Used ... $5.99
First up is Can't Stand The Rezillos – a record with guitars fast and hard enough to almost be late 70s punk rock, but which often comes off with a more playful, whimsical new wave sort of approach! Tracks are short and hook-heavy – produced by Bob Clearmountain with that razor-edged quality he brought to his best work of the time – and the trading off of lead vocals between Fay Fife and Eugene Reynolds makes the record hang nicely in a space between Blondie and The Ramones! Titles include "Flying Saucer Attach", "No", "Top Of The Pops", "2000 AD", "It Gets Me", "Glad All Over", and "Cold Wars". Next is Mission Accomplished – a fierce little live set from The Rezillos – one that comes as quite a surprise, since the group had only issued one studio set before – but a great choice overall, as the live setting really seems to set them on fire! Things here are harder, faster, and sharper than on their debut – with more punk speed and energy in the guitars, even if the songs themselves are more in a power pop mode – as tuneful as they are quick-moving! The concert was actually the group's last – recorded at a time when they'd announced a breakup – and that maybe gives the whole thing an urgency that was missing before, and which really makes us wish they'd kept recording. Titles include "Top Of The Pops"," Mystery Action", "Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonite", "Thunderbirds Are Go", "No", "Teenbeat", "Ballroom Blitz", "Destination Venus", and "Culture Shock". VariousSurrender To The Rhythm – The London Pub Rock Scene Of The 70s (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99 38.99
A fantastic introduction to one of the most confusing British styles of the 70s – the huge pub rock moment that preceded punk, and which offered up a stripped-down approach to the music that helped set the scene for plenty of later changes to come! The name is a bit tricky to explain – much of these bands did play pubs and smaller venues, but they also represented a shift amidst the rising tide of arena rock and overblown concept albums – artists who were maybe getting back to basics with tight, sharp songcraft, and the kind of hooks that first made rock and roll so great in the first place – but also served up with all the sense of variety that had crept into the music from the start! There are a few big names that have always been associated with pub rock – but this set is the first we've seen to really showcase the true scope of the music – with 71 tracks in a nice slipcase with detailed notes - work by Chris Spedding, Moon, Legend, Wild Angels, Dr Feelgood, Flip City, Byzantium, Razorbacks, Chaz & Dave, Fox, Count Bishops, Mott The Hoople, Ducks Deluxe, Kiburn & The High Roads, National Flag, Jona Lewie, Roogalator, Deep Feeling, Status Quo, Steve Ellis, STray, The Pirats, Squeeze, Merton Parkas, Inmates, Ian Gomm, and many others!
