A fantastic album from the Spanish scene of the 70s – one divided up into sections of "Angeles" and "Demonios" – the last of which is pretty darn funky! The album starts with the demonic material – which has these great heavy drums and percussion – driving fast and frenzied, while basslines rumble and acoustic guitar provides some nice touches that borrow lots from flamenco, then turn towards hipper 70s styles – all with vocal refrains that really keep things moving! The Angeles material is a bit more laidback, but still pretty great – kind of slow funk overall – and there's this really cool energy to the whole record, part of that young Spanish generation trying to find the best elements of their musical roots, then push them forward with a more soulful, youthful vibe. Brian Eno leaves the Airports, and moves On Land – but still keeps things pretty much in the spare sound of the Ambient series! The lineup here features a few more extra musicians – including Michael Beinhorn on synth, Jon Hassell on trumpet, Axel Gros and Michael Brook on guitars, and Bill Laswell on bass – but all players are used sparingly, and the overall sound hardly acknowledges their presence. Daniel Lanois helped in the recording of some of the material – an early moment in his famous partnership with Eno – and the tracks were recorded over the space of 4 years – with occasional glimmers of the British countryside through the hazy atmospherics of Eno's landscape. A huge legacy of music from Eyeless In Gaza – an important British duo from the post-punk years, and one with a sound that definitely went on to shape the style of much bigger acts at the time! Fruupp are a group who may use ancient imagery on their covers, but who work with a very modern feel overall – or at least one that was pretty darn contemporary at the time of this release from 1973! The vibe is prog, but a bit more focused than tied around album-side jams – as Fruupp always bring things back with a nice sort of vocal presence in their music – one that's balanced equally well with some of the more full-on guitar or keyboard passages on the record! Peter Gabriel gets a bit bolder and more confident here in his solo role – coming out with some of the bite of his Rael character from years back, but with a tighter, more focused mode that's pretty darn great! You can hear the early touch of the styles that would wander too strongly into the wrong territory a decade later – but here, things are all pretty darn fresh – wrapped around song themes that feel like very new ones for Gabriel, in ways that almost have you feeling him pick and choose the topics as the record moves on. Production is tight, but never too uptight – and titles include "On The Air", "DIY", "Exposure", "Animal Magic", "Flotsam & Jetsam", "Perspective", and "White Shadow". LP, Vinyl record album

Keef Hartley always keeps things cool, and this album's no exception to that rule – a wicked set of jazz rock numbers with a hard undercurrent of funk! Hartley's drums are great, and really kick most tunes into gear – putting more punch into the tunes than on other albums of this nature, and creating a few nice break moments along the way. Other instrumentation includes tenor, alto, flute, organ, and some very sharp guitar – and although the vocals are a bit bluesy, the rhythms are all pretty groovy! Some of the earliest work you'll ever hear from the young Jim Osterberg – material that features the famous Stooges frontman playing drums, and doing a slight bit of singing! The group sound a fair bit like you might expect from the cover – a tight, sharp, local combo who do a great job both with their own material, and some of the well-chosen covers they recorded – the kind of stomping garagey material that would have been a hit in the small Michigan clubs at the time! Most vocals are by guitarists Nick Kolokithas and Jim McLaughlin, the latter of whom formed the group with Iggy – and Osterberg does sing lead on a pretty great version of "California Sun", and also contributed the original composition "Again & Again" – a tune that definitely points the way towards The Stooges, and is one of the creepiest things on here. The Montanas look like a bunch of groovy 60s cats on the cover – and while they definitely had some great hits during the British Invasion years, they also kept on cutting some very cool material well into the 70s – all of which is included in this overstuffed set! Joanna Newsom as richly lyrical, lushly arranged and weirdly beautiful as ever! As always, her distinctive voice is a very compelling instrument, and no other could convey the wordy brilliance of her songs. Recorded by Steve Albini and Noah Georgeson with clarity and immediacy, all the better for the diverse arrangements that range from light orchestal, to wispy folk, to anthemic, if largely acoustic art pop. At this point, if you've heard Joanna Newsom, you either "get it" or not. Our admiration grows with each effort, and we're pretty excited that an artist with a sound this far out of the ordinary can be as popular as she is. The group's got equal parts funk and equal parts blues, and they play with kind of trippy approach to the music that's filled with lots of wry touches – both instrumentally and vocally – that keep things nice and lively! Breaking In brings the blues influences a bit more to the fore, and is more stripped down in instrumentation, but it's still a pretty tripped out set with some great drums, woozy organ and searing guitars. Next is Grievous Angel, one of the most beloved country rock albums of all time! A surprisingly great batch of material from the early years of Cliff Richards – a figure who became somewhat staid pretty quickly, but who was a hell of a rocker on the UK scene during the time of these early cuts! Given Cliff's mainstream pop fame in the late 60s and through the 70s, it's sometimes easy to forget that at the start, he was almost England's answer to Elvis Presley – a dynamic young singer who was really giving things his all, and usually got some great rocking accompaniment as well! This package will definitely re-open your eyes to Cliff – and it serves up a whopping 34 tracks in all, all with the great Bear Family style of presentation – tunes that include "Dynamite", "High Class Baby", "Move It", "Apron Strings", "What'd I Say", "The Snake & The Bookworm", "Forty Days", "My Babe", "Don't Bug Me Baby", "My Feet Hit The Ground", and "Painted Toe Shoes". Blue-eyed soul from the legendary Mitch Ryder – and pretty darn gritty at that – steeped in styles borrowed from Memphis and Muscle Shoals, and given a bit of a color-blind twist on the Detroit scene of the late 60s! Mitch clearly loves the motor city sound of the 60s, but also takes things to farther points south, too – using elements that would be right at home on Stax or Atlantic Records, and coming up with a crossover sound that had his recorded almost ending up in more soul collections over the years than rock ones! Production is by pop maestro Bob Crewe, but it's surprisingly unadorned compared to some of Crewe's other work of the time – and the album bristles with sock-soul instrumentation from the Detroit Wheels, and loud, proud vocals from Mitch. There's a bit of garaey guitars in the mix, too – making for a mighty nice hybrid of styles – and titles include "Shakin With Linda", "You Get Your Kicks", "Any Day Now", "I Need Help", "Little Latin Lupe Lu", "Walkin The Dog", "I Had It Made", and the classic "Breakout". Early British psych from Tomorrow – groovy, trippy stuff with some inventive guitar playing and production, some great harmonies and catchy melodies that put them on par with some of the better remembered acts in the early years of British psychedelia! The group features Keith West, Steve Howe (years before Yes), John "Twink" Alder (who would go on to The Pretty Things and The Pink Fairies). Produced by Mark Wirtz, who also handles the keyboards on the album. Tracks include "My White Bicycle", "Colonel Brown", "Real Life Permanent Dream", Revolution", "Three Jolly Dwarfs", "Hallucinations" and more. CD

A legendary album from the Brit psych scene at the end of the 60s – and one of the few records from that time that's still completely mindblowing all these many years later! Twink is John Alden, who'd had already had years of work behind him before putting together this set – including stints with Tomorrow and Pretty Things – and the direction here is very different than most of what was taking place at the time – much looser and more experimental, as the album seems to leap into very heady territory right from the start! There's no effort at putting out an easy single or crossover hit – and instead, some of these tunes have a sonic complexity that almost prefaces later more experimental work from the British scene, including the 80s industrial years – with one number that's just kind of a weird melange of voices, and another that's a lot of noise on drums, sitar, tablas, and effects – as well as a "pixie horn"!
