Somehow, someway, Bob Dylan and Columbia Records can keep returning to the well of unreleased material – and draw jaw droppingly brilliant recordings that are mostly unheard to the general population of non Dylan diehard archaeologists! Here lies the fabled Witmark Demos – early recordings of treasured Dylan classics and rarities alike recorded raw and unencumbered, just Dylan's voice, guitar and occasional harmonica or piano – recorded in 1962 for Leeds Music (a few) and M. Witmark & Sons (most of 'em) in the early-to-mid 60s. Dylan was one of the first wave of 60s folk songwriters brought into the Tin Pan Alley machinations, a pretty amazing moment considering that this gruff, nasal voiced figure was soon to revolutionize popular music and there's no way Witmark could have known it. Hey, maybe this kid will make us a few bucks in the urban folk racket, eh? Wow. Of course many of these songs would be recorded by a who's who of 60s & 70s singers of all stripes, but it's always great to here Dylan's own early, raw sketches. The great city of Boston lost Babe Ruth in 1920, and it was pretty much all downhill until the Modern Lovers showed up at the end of the 60s. The two chord proto-punk, pomposity-busting brilliance of Jonathan Richman and his organ-heavy (courtesy of pre-Talking Head Jerry Harrison) Modern Lovers sounds better and better every time we hear it! A heck of a discovery – early recordings Townes Van Zandt cut in mid 60s Nashville – a couple of years before his official solo debut, and a soul shakingly beautiful mix of his country folk blues storytelling and some more rollicking numbers that work exceptionally well! One of the things that's most striking about it is how wise and knowing his songs and his voice are this early in his game, with the more intimate voice and guitar numbers sounding great. The few songs with busier instumentation work, too, and that's even more surprising give the Townes loner folk ouvre. Mark Fry was just a young lad when he recorded this album – as you might guess from the cover – a Brit staying in Italy, where he cut this rare gem that's gone onto legendary status over the years – a set that's maybe circulated in far more unofficial copies than its original release! The style is a bit hard to peg – not the traditional folk of the UK scene of the time, but equally acoustic overall, and touched with some occasional older instrumentation – yet delivered with a much trippier vibe, maybe even more in a mode that points towards more addled sounds that would emerge later in the next decade. The structure is great – with some poetic "Dreaming With Alice" passages between most songs – and titles that include "Mandolin Man", "Down Narrow Streets", "The Witch", "A Norman Soldier", "Lute & Flute", and "Roses For Columbus" – all beautifully dark, yet dreamy. A stunningly massive album – the debut of this obscure UK group, who are a combo that shift effortlessly between late psych and early prog, with perhaps a bit of hard rock thrown in for good measure! If the tunes were longer, they might be too self-indulgent – but instead, the group step nicely between short bursts of musical inspiration – new ideas at every twist and turn, and a great way of using the studio as much as their own instruments – so that the vocals, guitar fuzz, and other elements move between rumbling intensity and some more offbeat moments! One of those lost treasures that really deserves more immortality – with titles that include "A Fairly Tale", "Dennis James The Clown", "Reality", "Mainliner", "Good Old '59 (We Are Slowly Getting Older)", "Steam Tugs", and "The World Will End Yesterday". A record that initially circulated in under-the-counter status as an unofficial Sex Pistols album before the release of Never Mind The Bollocks – and a set that serves as a much-needed prequel to that punk rock classic! The tracks here are all studio material – certainly a bit rougher than the later album, but still pretty well-done, and showing a mix of early versions of songs and a few unique moments too – with changes in lyrics and these guitar parts that are simpler, but no less searing – and still far better than most of the group's contemporaries in years to come.
