Chuck BerryChuck Berry/More Chuck Berry ... CD
Chess/BGO (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A double-helping of Chuck Berry brilliance from his early years on Chess Records – music that always has way way more to offer than you might think! Sure, some of Chuck's hits are very familiar – and sure, the man could later be a bit of a parody of himself – but there's no denying the power of this early material, and the revolutionary way Chuck had of playing guitar – rooted in blues, paving the way to rock, and also opening the door to lots more funky soul in years to come! The guitar work alone is worth the price of admission, but the songs and vocals are wonderful too – and the CD features 26 titles that include "Down The Road A Piece", "Mad Lad", "Sweet Little Rock & Roller", "Anthony Boy", "Little Queenie", "Oh Baby Doll", "Confessin The Blues", "Almost Grown", "Jo Jo Gunne", "Wee Wee Hours", "Too Much Monkey Business", and "Brown Eyed Handsome Man". ✨✧ Finnigan & WoodCrazed Hipsters ... LP
Blue Thumb, Early 70s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
We're not sure we'd go as far as to say that Mike Finnigan and Jerry Wood are the crazed hipsters promised in the title – but they do a very good job here of hitting some of the more offbeat sides of the scene in the early 70s! By the time of the record, Mike had plenty of experience on a variety of keyboards with other artists – and he's cutting loose here with Jerry, who plays guitar and sings – while the duo make their way through a rootsy blend of different styles – sometimes even a bit funky, other times a bit more relaxed and down home. At the best moments, Wood's guitar is sharp and fuzzy – and titles include "Down In The Flood", "Hard Times", "Tend To Your Own Business", "Laughing Eyes", "Highway", "Rock & Roll Show", "Don't Cry No More", and "Death Letter". Pacemaker Entertainment (Canada), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Solid grooves that range from a bluesy rock rumble to more of an easygoing style from Blackstone – with gritty, emotive vocals, guitars and drums that drive the sound along – with some sweet organ and keys sweetening it up! The blues & soul influences are right out front, but the group has a walloping sound of its own. Titles include "Qualified", "Mountain", "Change Is Gonna Come", "Back Door Man", "Ain't Gonna Let It Go", "Oopoopadoo", "Aint Nobodys Business", "Likakowpi (Look-A-Ky-Py)", "Gonna Getcha" and more. ✨✧ David ByrneCatherine Wheel ... LP
Sire, 1982. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A bit of David Byrne from the best years of the Talking Heads – tunes commissioned by Twyla Tharp for an offbeat piece of dance entitled The Catherine Wheel. A few of the tracks are vocals, and feature some of Byrne's most compelling lyrics from the time – and others are instrumentals, filled with guitar and prophet, and coming up with lots of dark rhythmic sounds that lie somewhere in the territory of experimental work at the time by Brian Eno, Jon Hassell, Adrian Belew, and other mainstream avant rockers. Titles include "His Wife Refused", "Two Soldiers", "Red House", "My Big Hands", "Big Business", and "What A Day That Was". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ David ByrneMusic For The Knee Plays ... LP
ECM, 1985. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A really great record from David Byrne – songs and spoken bits that were originally designed to be used in Robert Wilson's Civil Wars – but which work great on their own! Byrne is completely charming in the spoken bits – with a sense of dry wit mixed with humanism, not that different from Laurie Anderson at the time – and instrumentation features a range of reeds and trumpets, gently cascading with the rhythms of the tunes – but in a relatively subtle way. Tracks include the wonderful "Tree" – aka "Today Is An Important Occasion" – plus "In The Upper Room", "Sound Of Business", "Admiral Perry", "I Bid You Goodnight", "In The Future", "Where The Sun Never Goes Down", "Theadora Is Dozing", "Social Studies", "Winter", and "The Jungle Book". ✨✧ Joe CockerJoe Cocker! (1969) ... LP
A&M, 1969. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A landmark album from Joe Cocker – and a set that took blue-eyed soul in a whole new direction at the end of the 60s! The album's a surprising stunner all the way through – one that really gets past some of the overdone Cocker cliches that held on a bit too strongly in later years – served up here in relative simplicity, with core backing by Chris Stainton and The Grease Band, plus some key LA help from Leon Russell, and a bevy of backup singers that includes Merry Clayton, Bonnie Bramlett, Rita Coolidge, and Patrice Holloway. Russell co-produced the set, and his soulful touch definitely helps do a lot for Cocker's already-amazing vocals – adding in an undercurrent of funk that wasn't heard on Joe's first album. Titles include a classic remake of "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window", plus "Delta Lady", "Something", "That's Your Business Now", "Hitchcock Railway", "Dear Landlord", "Darling Be Home Soon", and "Hello Little Friend". LP, Vinyl record album
(Tan label pressing. Cover has top seam wear and a small split, light surface wear & aging.)

Delta 5Singles & Sessions 1979 to 1981 (light blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Rough Trade/Kill Rock Stars, Late 1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 26.99 On May 3, 2024
Fantastic work from Delta 5 – one of our favorite groups from the UK post-punk years, and a group whose funky, dubby approach to punk rivals the best work by groups like The Slits or Gang Of Four! Like both groups, they have smart songs with interesting lyrics – but focused down right into the groove, with lots of heavy interplay between bass and guitar – captured with a razor-sharp sound, and that inherent sense of darkness we love in so many productions from the time! Female singer Ros Allen is in the lead, really belting out the tunes with a great sort of edge – and the set includes the group's three rare singles on Rough Trade, plus BBC sessions and live material – making for an overdue full length collection from these years. Titles include their classic "Mind Your Own Business" – plus "Now That You've Gone", "Try", "Colour", "Make Up", "Triangle", "Innocenti", "Train Song", "Anticipation", "Final Scene", "Shadow", "Circuit", and "Journey". ✨✧ Orang-UtanOrang-Utan ... LP
Bell/Guerssen (Spain), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
There's plenty of monkey business going on with this one and only album from Orang-Utan – as the group were actually named Hunter, from the UK – but the set was issued in the US under a different band name, and without the knowledge of the group! Yet that hardly keeps it from being a killer, though – as the record's got this raw early 70s British hard rock energy – heavy bass, searing guitar, and nicely nasty lead vocals from singer Nobby Clarke! Titles include "Love Queen", "Fly Me High", "Magic Playground", "Slipping Away", "I Can See Inside Your Head", and "Chocolate Piano". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ginny RedingtonOpen Wide America – The Ginny Redington Jingle Workshop (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Modern Harmonic, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really cool collection of tracks, pulled from the glory days of the jingle-oriented television ad – a time when artists like Ginny Redington would pen short little songs that were every bit as catchy as songs on the charts – to sell everything from hamburgers to soft drinks, bank services, and weight control! The tunes here are all from the vaults of Redington – and feature cool little tunes written for Coca Cola, Sprite, Canada Dry, Gino's, Minute Maid, and a number of other big brands in the 70s – some spare with just Ginny on vocals and a bit of keyboards, some with a fuller, richer style that uses more instrumentation and additional singers! The package is totally cool – and titles include "Coke Ads Life", "Open Wide America", "Plop Plop Fast Food", "Now We're Talkin Beer", "Oh Canada", "Women In Business", "The World's Best Fit", and "The Clean In Your Mouth". ✨✧ Small FacesSmall Faces ... CD
Decca/London (UK), 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
There's nobody like The Small Faces at their best – as you'll hear from the group's killer 1966 album on Decca! The style here is tight, right, and fully-formed straight from the start – easily one of the best UK 60s hybrids of American influences from R&B, garage rock, and early psych – sorted out perfectly by a quartet of lads who really know what they're doing. And the album's maybe even more focused than the group's later album on Immediate – as here, The Small Faces are all business, and the right kind of gritty – just fantastic stuff that's fresh and exciting even today! Titles include "Shake", "Come On Children", "You Better Believe It", "IT's Too Late", "One Night Stand", "Sorry She's Mine", "Sha La La Lee", and "Own Up Time". 2CD version is filled with great stuff – the full mono mix of the album, plus bonus tracks that include "Patterns", "Grow Your Own", "What's A Matter Baby", and "I've Got Mine". ✨✧ Porter WagonerCold Hard Facts Of Life/Soul Of A Convict (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Omni (Australia), 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
Two classic country narrative LPs from the unapologetic showman and honky tonk kingpin Porter Wagoner – the adultery themed Cold Hard Facts Of Life and the behind bars concept album Soul Of A Convict – back to back with rare bonus tracks! Cold Hard Facts Of Life is peak Porter, balancing a core of rugged honky tonk with lush arrangements better than anyone in the business (then or now) and with songs that teeter on the edge of nudge & wink hokum without losing the sincerity. Titles include "First Miss Jones", "Words And Music", "Cold Hard Facts Of Life", "Tragic Romance", "Julie" and more. Soul Of A Convict And Other Great Prison Songs, also from 1967, takes the trademark Wagoner approach to the jailhouse, with Porter doing justice to Cash and Hag classics, and other great tunes, including "Boston Jail", "Convict And The Rose", "I'm Just Here To Get My Baby Out Of Jail", "Green Green Grass Of Home", "Soul Of A Convict" and more. This great Omni edition includes 6 bonus tracks including "I Lived So Fast And Hard", "House Of Shame" and more. (Folk/Country, Rock) CD

VariousDestination Jail Vol 2 – 24 More Songs From Behind The bArs ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), 1950s/Early 1960s. New Copy ... $8.99 11.99
Serving time has never been this groovy – thanks to a whole host of prison-themed tunes from the postwar years, presented here in a package that's especially strong on blues and R&B! Sure, most folks know "Folsom Prison Blues", but this package digs much deeper to come up with two dozen near-lost tracks that also echo the legacy of incarceration that frequently interacted with the music business during years when even the most minor infraction might get a singer or instrumentalist locked up. We're not saying that all these artists have experience behind bars, but the set does resonate strongly as a showcase of the too-common theme of jail and prison in American music. Titles include "Jailbird" by Smiley Lewis, "But Officer" by Sonny Knight, "Hey Mr Warden" by Danny Cobb, "Prisoner's Song" by Fats Domino, "Please Mr Jailer" by Wynona Carr, "Ball & Chain Blues" by Josh White, "Jail Bird" by El Pauling & Royal Abbit, "Prisoner's Plea" by Billy Boy Arnold, "Jailhouse Blues" by Ottille Patterson, "When I Leave These Prison Walls" by The Larks, and "I'm A Prisoner" by Eddie Boyd. ✨✧ VariousHank Williams Connection – 33 Roots & Covers Of Hank Williams ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), 1950s/1960s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The shadow of Hank Williams still looms large in country music well into the 21st Century – but it had an especially strong force in the years after his too-early death – as you'll hear here in a great selection of covers, tributes, and other songs that continue the short-but-strong legacy of revolution that Hank brought to country music! Some of the cuts here are pop numbers, and show the way that Williams' original tunes found many different audiences in the 50s – yet most are pure country, and are way more than straight remakes of originals by the legend. As always with Bear Family, the package is great – filled with images and detailed notes on all the tracks and artists – served up on 33 tracks that include "Kaw-Liga" by Rusty & Doug Kershaw, "Calling You" by Hank Williams Jr, "I'm A Long Gone Daddy" by Bobby Helms, "Move It On Over" by Richard Hayes, "I Saw The Light" by Rose Maddox, "Honky Tonkin" by Audrey Williams, "I Just Don't Like This Kind Of Livin" by Johnny Horton, "Mind Your Own Business" by Ted Daigle, "Lost Highway" by Skeets McDonald, "Cold Cold Heart" by Louis Armstrong, "Lovesick Blues" by Rex Griffin, "Baby We're Really In Love" by Don Gibson, and "Half As Much" by Tennessee Ernie Ford. ✨✧ VariousState Of The Union – The American Dream 1967 to 1973 – Presented By Bob Stanley & Pete Wiggs ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great look at the changing tone on the American scene at the end of the 60s – that moment when Vietnam, social unrest, and many other problems weighed heavily on the country's consciousness – and made their presence manifest in all sorts of pop music as well! We're not talking about the familiar sounds of the Woodstock generation – but instead more mainstream artists who had never touched on politics or social issues before – but suddenly found themselves singing alongside the underground about the bigger problems of the day. This package is a superb look at that moment – put together by the team who've given us the great English Weather and Paris In The Spring collections for Ace – with the same care for choice of tracks, and a wealth of wonderful notes that really get at the nature of these unusual tunes. Titles include "Clean Up Your Own Back Yard" by Elvis Presley, "Wine In The Wind" by Anita Kerr Singers, "Paint Me Black Angels" by Eartha Kitt, "This Crazy World" by Paul Anka, "Questions" by Bobby Darin, "Do You Believe This Town" by Dean Martin, "Cardboard California" by Buddy Greco, "Cherrystones" by Eugene McDaniels, "Save The Children" by Teresa Brewer, "Welfare Hero" by Johnny Tillotson, "What Do We Do With The World" by Bing Crosby, "4th Of July" by The Beach Boys, "Mr Businessman" by Ray Stevens, "Paint America Love" by Lou Christie, "Hitchhiker" by The Four Preps, "Brand New Day" by Della Reese, "Saturday's Father" by The 4 Seasons, and "Southbound Jericho Parkway" by Roy Orbison.
