✨✧ Moody BluesGo Now – Moody Blues #1 (aka Magnificent Moodies) ... LP
London, 1968. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
An incredible first album from The Moody Blues – way way different than any of their later high-concept work, and much more in the best soul and R&B-drenched material of the UK mod scene of the time! A number of cuts here are remakes of American soul tracks – including their stellar take on "Go Now" – and like some of the Moodies' best contemporaries, like Manfred Mann, the group really transform the material – and don't just offer up blue-eyed takes on the tunes. Instead, there's a free sense of play with the material – leanings that are definitely rockish on the solos, even though the overall vibe is quite soulful – and done with this tightly compressed style that's perfect for the vocals of the young Denny Laine – with a vibe that's further expanded by some nice use of echo in the production. Surprisingly wonderful – and very different than "Knights In White Satin" – with titles that include "Go Now", "I'll Go Crazy", "True Story", "Can't Nobody Love You", "I've Got A Dream", and "Let Me Go". ✨✧ Maki AsakawaMaki Asakawa ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $32.99 34.99
Haunting music from Japanese singer Maki Asakawa – every bit as smoky and soulful as you might guess from her image on the cover! These tracks are mostly sung in Japanese, but draw a very strong inspiration from American torch sounds of the 40s and 50s – a moody, late nite approach that's got a very universal appeal, even if you can't understand the language – and which is filled with an undeniable sense of melancholy right from the first note! The style is partly jazz, but also moves into some groovier modes of the period too – traces of psych at some points, mod European-styled arrangements at others, and even a few funky currents that come off surprisingly well. The package is wonderful – a great introduction to Maki's most classic music, featuring a well-chosen array of tracks, and nice liner notes by Alan Cummings. Titles include "Blue Spirit Blues", "Govinda", "Nemuru No Ga Kowai", "Uramado", "Kamome", "Gogo", "Hikkoshi", "Konna Funi Sugite Iku No Nara", "Yuki Ga Furu", and "Zenkamono Na Christmas". David BlueThese 23 Days In September/Stories/Nice Baby & The Angel/Cupid's Arrow ... CD
Morello (UK), 1968/1971/1973/1976. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 19.99
Four lost albums from David Blue – a really compelling singer/songwriter, ripe for rediscovery! First up is These 23 Days In September, recorded for Reprise – a really moody little record from David Blue – a folksy singer who's got a style that definitely lives up to the melancholy promise of his name! Blue's definitely an artist with a difference – working in the familiar mode of vocals and acoustic guitar, but with an edge and distinctness that really sets him apart from the folkies of a few year before – that sense of different that really set apart a new wave of contemporaries, like Leonard Cohen, Fred Neill, or Tom Rapp. Titles include "These 23 Days In September", "The Sailor's Lament", "Scales For A Window Thief", "You Will Come Back Again", "Slow & Easy", and "The Grand Hotel". Stories is an overlooked early set on Asylum – the kind of really special singer/songwriter material that really set the label apart at the start of the 70s! David Blue has this compelling vocal style that's moody, but down to earth – inflected here and there with guitar contributions from Ry Cooder, who's understated, but really brings out some special qualities in the tunes. Jack Nitzsche adds in some light strings at points – but overall, things are pretty spare and personal – and titles include "Looking For A Friend", "Another One Like Me", "Sister Rose", "The Blues", "Come On John", "Marianne", and "Fire In The Morning". Nice Baby & The Angel shows David Blue really starting to get some star power in his mix – a fuller set, produced by Graham Nash – with work from Nash on guitar, plus more guitar from Dave Mason and David Lindley – in a nice mix of roots elements, but which never overwhelm that unique sense of songwriting and vocals that set David Blue apart from the rest. Titles include "Darlin Jenny", "Troubadour Song", "Train To Anaheim", "True To You", "On Sunday Any Sunday", and "Outlaw Man". On the cover of Cupid's Arrow, David Blue might look a bit cheesy, what with his open shirt and all – but he's definitely the real deal, and very down to earth in his singer/songwriter approach – with a quality that's only underscored by the lineup on the set – a group that features Levon Helm on drums, Jesse Ed Davis on guitar, David Lindley on mandolin and slide, and Barry Goldberg on piano and organ, and also handling production of the album too. The shift from David's roots is a bit like that taken by other contemporaries who once started in more folksy territory, then found a new way to grow in the west coast singer/songwriter scene – and that means that things are more electrified, but still quite far from mainstream music – with original tunes from Blue throughout, and titles that include "I Feel Bad", "Maria Maria", "Primeval Tune", She's Got You", "Tom's Song", and "Run Run Run". ✨✧ Gal CostaLegal (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Philips/Endless Happiness, 1970. New Copy ... $27.99 29.99
Essential early material by Gal Costa! The record is her first after the immediate Tropicalia years, and it's a stunning blend of styles that seems to draw heavily from changes going on in the American rock scene at the time. The core of the music is still steeped in Brazilian elements – but there's a lot of influences coming into play on the album, like bluesy rock phrasing, showy nostalgia-heavy arrangements, psychedelic production elements, and some of the baroque orchestrations that would show up on Gal's later albums in the 70s. Includes a wonderful version of Caetano's "London London" and "Dixa Sangrar", the moody bossa "Falsa Baiana", Gilberto Gil's "Lingua Do P" and "Mini Misterio", and the tracks "The Archaic Lonely Star Blues", "Love, Try, & Die", and "Hotel Das Estrelas". Great cover, too! (Brazil, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

TrapezeTrapeze ... LP
Threshold, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $33.99 39.99
The debut album of Trapeze – a great little group that's maybe best known as the early home of Glenn Hughes, but who have plenty to offer on their own! Production is by John Lodge, of the Moody Blues – a strong supporter of the group at their start – but the sound is very different than his own work – sometimes with harmonies that almost have the group coming across in heavier territory than the earlier Bee Gees, sometimes with hints of the hard rock elements that Hughes would bring to later music. Drummer Dave Holland provides excellent work on the set – and titles include "The Giant's Dead Hoorah", "Over", "Nancy Gray", "It's Only A Dream", "Suicide", "Send Me No Letters", and "It's My Life". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousAll God's Children – Songs From The British Jesus Rock Revolution 1967 to 1974 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $28.99 34.99
A really groundbreaking collection – one that looks at the surprising rise of interest in spiritual ideas during the late 60s years of hippy-heavy rock music – served up here in a host of cuts by artists we never thought we'd see together in such a collection! These aren't obscure Christian rock bands or church groups – and instead, most of the music here is by bigger name groups who, during a time of peace and love, opened their ears to some of the more conventional expressions of the spirit – while still turning out music that was heavy on all the psych, prog, folk, and harder rock elements they would normally record! As always with Grapefruit, the notes are as essential as the overall track selection – a stunning mix of tracks from 57 different artists – with cuts from The Kinks, Strawbs, Incredible String Band, Amazing Blondel, Manfred Mann, Magna Carta, Hollies, Jethro Tull, Unicorn, Lindisfarne, Heron, Gordon Giltrap, Moody Blues, Fairport Convention, Matthews Southern Comfort, Nirvana, Al Stewart, Roy Wood, Bill Fay, and many others! ✨✧ Dan Hicks & His Hot LicksWhere's The Money/Striking It Rich/Last Train To Hicksville ... CD
Blue Thumb/BGO (UK), Early 1970s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A trio of albums from one of the most unique groups on the west coast scene! First up is Where's The Money – a classic live album from Dan Hicks and this mighty cool west coast combo – a set that's all stripped-down, and provides a great showcase for their amazing vocal and acoustic instrumental interplay! Dan's got two two female singers along for the performance – Maryann Price and Naomi Ruth Eisenberg – both of whom do way more than provide backup, as they work with plenty of percussion, and harmonize along with Dan's lead on most tracks – in that cool blend of acoustic roots and jazzy inflections that made the group so unique. The lineup also includes violin, mandolin, and bass – plus guitar from Dan – on titles that include "News From Up The Street", "Shorty Falls In Love", "The Buzzard Was Their Friend", "Is This My Happy Home", "Dig A Little Deeper", "Reelin Down", and "Caught In The Rain". Striking It Rich features the great Dan Hicks at the height of his powers – working in a sublime acoustic mode that weaves together strands of gypsy swing, American roots, harmony vocals, and plenty more too – all in a mode that's lean and timeless, and which was one of the hipper new sounds on the west coast scene of his generation! Dan works with great support from vocalists Maryann Price and Naomi Ruth Eisenberg – alongside instrumentation that includes guitar, bass, violin, mandolin, and plenty of percussion – all wrapped up with a sublime sound that has all the elements resonating together wonderfully! Titles include a great remake of his earlier gem "I Scare Myself" – plus "You Got To Believe", "O'Reilly At The Bar", "Moody Richard", "The Laughing Song", "Canned Music", "Skippy's Farewell", "Fujiyama", "Woe The Luck", and "I'm An Old Cowhand". Last Train To Hicksville is completely charming work from the great Dan Hicks – one of the few cats who could make us like music like this so much! Dan sings and plays rhythm guitar – and the group also features vocals from Maryann Price and Naomi Eisenberg – that lovely pair whose harmonies with Hicks really helped the group find their sound! As before, instrumentation is all acoustic, but used in these jazzy ways that are very unique – not folk, not string band, nor swing – but something very unique, and a real breath of fresh air in the 70s scene! Titles include "Long Come A Viper", "It's Not My Time To Go", "My Old Timey Baby", "Lonely Madman", "Cowboy's Dream No 19", and "Payday Blues". CD

✨✧ CressidaCressida/Asylum ... CD
Vertigo/BGO (UK), 1970/1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 lost jazz rock classics from Cressida – back to back in a single package! While decidedly more rock-oriented than some of their progressive contemporaries in the UK jazz rock scene, Cressida still had a great approach to rock that used a lot of jazz-based chords and rhythms, in the manner that was being explored by other bands at the time – like Colosseum or Nucleus. On the self-titled Cressida album, the general instrumental mix features hard drums, organ, and guitars – plus vocals that are very much in a Moody Blues tradition, but which seem to have more of an early King Crimson approach to lyrics, touched by some of the Nick Drake chord progressions on guitar. A hard one to pin down, but surprisingly enjoyable today – and the kind of record that lives way way past its noodly progressive roots! Titles include "Lights IN My Mind", "The Only Earthman In Town", "To Play Your Little Game", "Time For Bed", and "Down Down". Asylum has an even fuller, more ambitious feel than the first album – and the lineup is expanded slightly to make some great room for the legendary Harold McNair on flute! Tracks are bold and focused – with great lead vocals from Angus Cullen, who sometimes sings in a jazzy mode – but other times comes off with a raspy, heartfelt quality – and there's almost a Moody Blues-esque sense of mysticism going on with some of the best tracks. Titles include "Munich", "Asylum", "Goodbye Post Office Tower Goodbye", "Let Them Come When They Will", "Summer Weekend Of A Lifetime", and "Survivor". CD

✨✧ Tom RushCircle Game ... CD
Elektra, Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the best-remembered albums from the great Tom Rush – a set that gave the world his well-recorded title track (and the classic "No Regrets"), and which also has Tom really reaching out with a proud new style! The record expands the core sound of Rush in ways that roughly echo some of the early Tim Hardin material at Verve – still bluesy folk at the core, but with arrangements that are slight, but sophisticated – in ways that unlock all these great moods and colors in the songs that you never would have gotten if Rush were just singing and playing guitar on his own! Paul Harris handles the charts, and things are light, but well-pointed – a really beautiful inflection of the vocals and guitar at the core of the performance, often with a very moody style. Titles include "The Circle Game", "Rockport Sunday", "No Regrets", "Tin Angel", "Urge For Going", "Something In The Way She Moves", and "Shadow Dream Song". (Folk/Country, Rock) CD
