One of the few albums ever issued under the name of Michael Omartian – better known for his work in the studio on a wide variety of 70s sessions! The album's got a style that definitely shows off some of Omartin's work for soul-based artists – but overall, it's kind of a rockish date with funkier undercurrents – especially in the way the keyboards and rhythms come across. Mike plays the keys, sings, and also does all the production and arrangements too – with some rootsy touches, but mostly lots of tight, mid 70s LA studio modes. Some of the fiercest work we've ever heard from this legendary Czech fusion outfit – a previously-unreleased live performance from 1980, and one that may well blow away some of their classic studio records from the 70s! The tunes are long, and have a sense of darkness that we're not sure we've heard this strongly before – as keyboardist Martin Kratochvil plays Fender Rhodes and moog to really set the stage for most tunes at the start – then opening the door to bolder work on guitar from Frantisek Francl. There's as much prog going on here as jazz – and the lean quartet setting allows for plenty of longspun work from keys and guitar – on titles that include "Pecet", "Pralesni Pisen", "Trhanec", "Az Se Ucho Utrhne", and "Madona". Completely wonderful solo work from Monkee Mike Nesmith – music that almost bears no relationship to his famous TV sounds – save for the fact that Mike's still got all of his charms firmly intact! Yet the approach here is unabashedly country rock – that style that Nesmith was bringing to some of his songs as the 60s moved on, from very credible roots – and served up here by a very cool group that features plenty of steel guitar from OJ Red Rhodes! The tunes are smart, but understated – catchy, but never cloying – almost in the territory of the Byrds or Flying Burrito Brothers, but maybe without the darker corners. We've gotta admit, this record sounds a lot better with the passing of time than we might have expected – thanks in part to some totally sweet Fender Rhodes, used often, and in all the best ways to pepper the tunes! Barry Beckett and Bob James handle the keys – and there's even some gospel touches at times, thanks to help from the Jessy Dixon Singers and Chicago Community Choir. And Paul Simon's songwriting is mostly mature – and even on the hit "50 Ways", the drums from Steve Gadd more than make up for any clunk! LP, Vinyl record album

A trio of pop talents you'd normally find on TV – Paul Peterson and Shelly Fabares from the Donna Reed Show, plus James Darren, who'd also done some work for the same program as well – brought together here in a classic 60s album that allows each of their stars to shine brightly on their own! Every singer gets a set of their own tracks for the record – Fabares in the same style as her excellent records with producer/arranger Stu Phillips, Peterson at a level that's maybe a bit more throwaway kid pop, and Darren with a surprisingly strong presence that belies his record as the strongest recording star of the three.
