✨✧ Jefferson AirplaneBless Its Pointed Little Head (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA/Culture Factory, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
Jefferson Airplane's first live album – capturing them at a late 60s peak, at the Fillmores East and West – stretching things out nicely onstage and featuring a bunch of cool covers! Even though Jefferson Airplane has always been a symbol for freewheeling hippie excess, the album versions of so many of their benchmark tunes are pretty concise – but they get a nice workout in the live setting, without it ever getting too far out – and with those killer group harmonies in place. Includes "3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds", "Fat Angel", "Somebody To Love", "It's No Secret", "Plastic Fantastic Lover", "Bear Melt" and more. CD
(2012 limited edition reissue in an LP-style sleeve – includes domestic obi.)

Steve CropperWith A Little Help From My Friends ... LP
Volt, 1969. Very Good+ ... $19.99
An obscure bit of late 60s Stax! Steve Cropper's working away from the MG's here, in a mode that's slightly similar, but which has his guitar upfront in the mix on a batch of Memphis-style instrumentals – kind of his own take on the groove he was laying down with Booker T, but with a lot less organ in the mix! There's no mad funk on the album, but the whole thing's pretty darn nice – and is proof that Cropper was the key element in more than just a bit of the Stax sound at the time – a really strong artist who could more than stand on his own. Titles include "Crop Dustin", "Land Of 1000 Dances", "Rattlesnake", "Funky Broadway", and "Boogaloo Down Broadway". (Soul, Rock) LP
(Yellow label Volt pressing. Cover has some ring and edge wear, light aging, and stained spots with some wear at the top seam.)

Jackie De ShannonPut A Little Love In Your Heart ... LP
Imperial, 1969. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Quite possibly the last great hit from singer Jackie DeShannon – an album built around the righteous spirit of the title track – filled with really wonderful original tunes penned by Jackie and soul singer Jimmy Holiday! The album may well be the best to explore the space between pop and soul that often characterized Jackie's work – and the overall sound is somewhat similar to some of Dusty Springfield's best pop/soul work from the same stretch. 10 of the album's 12 tracks are originals by Holiday and DeShannon – all set to soaring orchestrations by James Langeford, which often have a pronounced influence from the sound of Atlantic Records in the late 60s! Titles include "Put A Little Love In Your Heart", "You Are The Real Thing", "River Of Love", "Movin", "You Can Come To Me", "You Have A Way With Me", and "I Let Go Completely". LP
(Cover has a cut corner and light wear.)

✨✧ Jan & DeanLittle Old Lady From Pasadena ... LP
Liberty, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A goofy title track, and a groovy little album from Jan & Dean – a set that has them settling nicely into their role as one of the most playful pairs in west coast pop – with a heck of a lot more staying power than some of their more surf-washed contemporaries! The album's got a number of tracks that follow in the similar LA-environs mode as the title track – but instead of being gimmicky, they almost come across with this whimsical sort of charm – like they're Jan & Dean's version of British tunes from The Kinks – a wonderfully playful picture postcard version of California, with more wit than you might expect! Titles include "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena", "The Anaheim Azusa & Cuckamonga Sewing Circle", "Summer Means Fun", "Old Ladies Seldom Power Shift", "Sidewalk Surfin", "One Piece Topless Bathing Suit", and "Horace The Swinging School Bus Driver". LP

Warner, 1974. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Little Feat's third, and maybe best their album – the adventurous country rock, soul, boogie blender Feats Don't Fail Me Know! Oh, this group wasn't going to fail anytime soon – not creatively, anyway. Nope! They really come into their own here – mixing up distinct styles into a groove all their own. Includes "Rock And Roll Doctor", "Oh Atlanta", "Skin It Back", "Down The Road", "Spanish Moon", "Feats Don't Fail Me Know", "The Fan" and that killer closing medley, "Cold Cold Cold/Triple Face Boogie". Little RichardFabulous Little Richard ... LP
Specialty, 1959. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Little Richard doing his much imitated, never bettered thing on the Fabulous Little Richard LP – released near the end of the 50s and featuring emotive r&b numbers he cut in earlier sessions – not all as wild-eyed and fiery as some of his 50s recordings but a soulful thrill! The album does feature a few of the more blazing classics, but all in all, this one demonstrates Richard's versatility more than some of his 50s work. Fabulous tracks from true legend! Includes "Shake A Hand", "Chicken Little Baby", "All Night Long", "Lonesome & Blue", "Kansas City", Maybe I'm Right", "I'm Just A Lonely", "Whole Lotta Shaking Going On", "I'm Just A Lonly Guy" and more. YardbirdsLittle Games ... LP
Epic, 1967. Very Good+ ... $33.99
Gritty and powerful grooves from The Yardbirds – a set that mixes bluesy guitars and psych in a pretty incredible way – all infused by excellent work from the young Jimmy Page, at a level that predicts course he's take with Led Zeppelin just a few years later! By the time of Little Games, the group are really hitting their stride – moving way past simple mod modes or garage grit, to find that sharp-edged sound that made the Yardbirds one of the best of their generation – and a huge influence on groups for years to come. The set was produced by Mickie Most – and titles include "Little Games", "Smile On Me", "White Summer", "Glimpses", "Drinking Muddy Water", "Little Soldier Boy", "Only The Black Rose", "No Excess Baggage", and "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor". Various28 Little Bangers From Richard Hawley's Jukebox ... LP
Ace (UK), Late 50s/1960s. New Copy 2LP ... $29.99 36.99
A host of raw rockers that were originally served up as 7" singles – all blasting out together with a tremendous amount of power – as if you're enjoying a night with choice cuts all stacked up in the jukebox pictured on the cover! The set's way more than any sort of oldies collection – as the music here is heavy on guitars, and effortlessly moves between blasts of fuzz and cleaner lines – sometimes instrumental, sometimes vocal – all with a sense of urgency that's delivered in the short space of the few minutes that would fit on a vintage 45! Richard Hawley curated the set, but even if you're not hip to his name, you'll find plenty here to dig if you love rare cuts of this sort – and as usual, Ace did a superb job with the presentation, sound quality, and notes! Titles include "Neb's Tune" by Ahab & The Wailers, "Cuttin Out" by The Pirages, "Feels Like A Woman" by The Troggs, "Buzzzzz" by Jimmy Cordon, "Bawana Jinde" by Al Duncan, "Dead End (part 1)" by The Executioners, "Where You Gonna Go" by Art Guy, "Long Line Rider" by Bobby Darin, "It's Nothing To Me" by Sanford Clark, "Jungle Walk" by The Dyna Sores, "Nasty" by The Timekeepers, "Quasimoto" by The Road Runners, "Swinging Drums" by Ronny Kae, and "Honky" by The Ho-Dads. ✨✧ Talking HeadsLittle Creatures ... LP
Sire, 1985. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A record that's almost a back to basics effort for the Talking Heads – produced with maybe a bit more crossover appeal than some of their early records, yet one that also shakes off some of the larger funk, soul, and global instrumentation that was part of their sound in the early 80s! David Byrne is at his charming best here – delivering tunes that have that new sense of wonder at the world that really marked the second chapter of the group's career – almost as if he were emerging from the late 70s punk world to become some sort of much-needed Mr Rogers for the following decade! The whole thing is wonderfully tight and well-crafted – different than "Psycho Killer", but great in its own sort of maturing way – on titles that include "And She Was", "Road To Nowhere", "The Lady Don't Mind", plus "Television Man", "Perfect World", and "Creatures Of Love". A heady mix of fuzzy funk and psychedelic production – served up here as a duet between Little Barrie and Malcolm Catto! Catto's on drums, with the same rock-solid style that we've loved right since his Mo Wax days – and Barrie handles guitar and vocals – with that more pronounced lyrical mode that he's had in recent years, yet still all filtered down in the mix – thanks to some nicely trippy production from Catto in his Quatermass Soundlab! The whole thing's a great blend of psych and funk – on titles that include "You're Only You", "Repeater #2", "Rest In Blue", "TRABS", "Steel Drum", "After After", and "Repeater #1". ✨✧ Fred NeilLittle Bit Of Rain (aka Bleecker & MacDougal) ... LP
Elektra, 1965. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The first full album from the great Fred Neil – recorded for Elektra Records in the years before his underground fame on Capitol – and with a sound that's maybe a bit more bluesy overall, but in a very cool way! Fred's songwriting strengths are very much at play here – as almost all songs are originals – but there's also a tighter focus that compresses most numbers to the 2/3 minute range – instead of making them more of the wispier workouts of later years. The group's quite an interesting one – with on guitar and dobro from Pete Childs, bass from Felix Pappalardi, and harmonica from John Sebastian – all at a young point that has them bringing plenty of folk blues inflections to their performances, but in a way that's completely free of any hoke or cliche. Titles include "Travelin Shoes", "Water Is Wide", "Gone Again", "Candy Man", "Yonder Comes The Blues", and "Little Bit Of Rain". LP

Real Gone, Early 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two rare slices of work from Little Richard – both from more unusual periods in his career! The set begins with some early 60s tracks from a time when Richard wasn't with any big label, and was doing some tracks on his own – four titles that he licensed to Atlantic Records for issue on 7" singles – none of which did well, which makes these some of his most obscure tracks of the 60s! The rest of the work here is from Little Richard's great comeback stretch on Warner Brothers – best known for three great funky albums with production from Bumps Blackwell – and presented here with single versions of those album tracks, plus one non-LP release too! Titles include "Hole In The Wall", "Travelin Shoes", "It Is No Secret", "Freedom Blues", "Greenwood Mississippi", "Shake A Hand", "Money Is", "Nuki Suki", "Dancing In The Street", "Green Power", and "Somebody Saw You". A big, lush and moody set of standards by the great Harry Nilsson – with Harry's charismatic, unrivaled vocals in peak form – and add just a little touch of the oddball touches he was most famous for to that point! At this point in the early 70s, probably the least hip thing a singer could do would be to hire a a grand pop composer and an orchestra to record a set of standards, but ever the vocal trailblazer, that's what Harry did and it works magically. Gordon Jenkins conducted, and titles include Nilsson's takes on "Lazy Moon", "For Me And My Gal", "It Had To Be You", "This Is All I Ask", "As Time Goes By" and more. LP

Gritty grooves all the way through – all pulled from rare 45s from the early days of rock and R&B – often heavy on guitars, with a fair bit of instrumentals overall! The mix of modes is exactly what's promised in the title – sounds that start in rockabilly and end in surf, all hand-picked by the mighty Keb Darge, who first found his calling in funk – with lots of help from his musical soulmate Little Edith – a pair of great ears who really know how to move way past the hits and obvious work from this generation! Just about every cut here is super-rare – no overplayed oldies here – and titles include "Twisted Fender" by Jonnie & The Cyclones, "Later On" by The Dynamics, "Neb's Tune" by Ahab & The Wailers, "Ramblin On" by The Thunderballs, "Maybelline" by Ron Haydock & The Boppers, "Panther Pounce" by The Jesters, "Swing Bop Boogie" by Alvis Wayne, "Teenage Ball" by Elroy Dietzel, and "Don't Be Gone Long" by Bob Doss. Little David, 1977. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A simple title, but a classic album – arguably one of Kenny Rankin's biggest hits of the 70s, but every bit as great as his lesser-known work! Don Costa arranged the set, but the sound is still wonderfully intimate – with a focus on Kenny's vocals and acoustic guitar, steeped in folksy roots, but carried off with plenty of warmer, chromatic tones that have a great dose of jazz in the mix. The core group's a quartet, with electric piano and organ from Wendy Haas – and titles include the megahit "On And On", plus "House Of Gold", "Here's That Rainy Day", "Through The Eye Of The Eagle", "Make Believe", "I Love You", and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". ✨✧ Kenny RankinLike A Seed ... LP
Little David, 1972. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Indescribably beautiful work from Kenny Rankin – a jazzy blend of vocals and folk – delivered with a warm and soulful tone that's unlike anyone else! The whole thing's great – really very much its own spirit, and kind of a bright light after a host of doom and gloom late 60s folk-based singers in popular music. Of course, Kenny's still got something of a righteous feel, and lets his politics sneak out from time to time – but his overall sound is wonderfully redemptive, without being cloying in kind of a James Taylor sort of way. The instrumentation is great too – with just the right use of acoustic guitar in warm chromatic tones, plus nice touches on flute and saxes from Jim Horn, and gently groovy backings that never dampen Kenny's light. Titles include "Sometimes", "Peaceful", "Stringman", "You Are My Woman", "I Was Born", and "Yesterday's Lies". (Vocalists, Rock) LP

Very cool French pop from Antonin Appaix – contemporary cuts, but done with an ear for the best styles of the vintage generation – which makes these lean little tracks completely charming all the way through! Antonin's got a slightly soft, slightly spoken vocal approach, and works with spare keyboards, beats, and samples – at a level that almost feels like a French take on some of the styles that Momus was laying down in the early 90s, presented with an equally seductive kind of vibe! Ars Nova were really short-lived group – known for only two rare records – but they've got a sound that perfectly sums up a generation! There's a wonderful LA late 60s sound here – somewhere between Love and The Byrds, with the baroque touches of the former and the best country influences of the latter – all wrapped up in earnest, honest songwriting that makes even the ambitious moments come across with surprising charm. A true lost relic, and the kind of record that should be in any late 60s cannon! A really striking album in the career of Atomic Rooster – one that's a little bit groovier than most, and maybe a bit funky as well! The drums are great, and have plenty of soulful currents – and the Hammond, piano, and electric piano work of Vincent Crane almost seem to echo earlier UK beat group currents, but turned towards a much hipper 70s vibe – one that's followed by an equally extended range from vocalist Chris Farlowe, who seems to fold together both his mod and prog experience in the vocals! Steve Bolton brings in some tight, riffing guitar – and titles include "Time Take My Life", "Never To Lose", "Breathless", "People You Can't Trust", "All In Satan's Name", "Close Your Eyes", "Little Bit Of Inner Air", and "Stand By Me". The first Babes In Toyland LP – maybe a little noisier and stranger than their major label efforts, which is a heck of a statement given how gnarly and awesome the later Fontanelle record turned out! Babes never really got the props they deserve for helping pave the way for noise rock to pummel it's way to the mainstream in the early 90s – especially for women in the scene – and Spanking Machine is the most underappreciated album in an underappreciated run all together. Beach BoysStack O Tracks ... LP
Capitol, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $33.99 44.99
Beach Boys karaoke – or kind of a "music minus one" album – but whatever the case, the set's a pretty unique outing in the field of 60s pop! The record's exactly what the title promises – a "stack o tracks" from the group's earlier records – rhythm parts, some instrumental bits – all laid out with key guitar parts missing and no vocals at all – so that you can pick up your instrument and play along with the record – and maybe get your friends to harmonize too! At the time, the approach seemed somewhat crazy – but after spending decades tracking down Smile-era bootlegs of Brian Wilson studio tracks just like this, the record's got a surprising sort of brilliance – almost as if Brian had guessed there's be a market for his "studio progress" sort of material. Beau BrummelsBest Of The Beau Brummels – Featuring Laugh Laugh ... LP
Vault, Mid 60s. Very Good ... $9.99
An unusual collection of early work by The Beau Brummels – pre-Warner material recorded for Autumn, but on a record issued by the Vault label! There's a great sense of jangle-pop throughout – a slight twang that would later unfold in different ways in Bradley's Barn, but which here works to give the tunes this little sense of sadness amidst the warmer melodies – which themselves are particularly great, and much better-crafted than some of the other US groups of this nature at the time. The boys definitely borrow a bit from The Beatles (including a name that gave them placement right next to the fab four in the record racks) – but maybe they're also drawing on some of the folk harmony groups from the SF scene they called home, too. Chess, 1959. Good ... $24.99
Chuck Berry is definitely on top with this classic Chess Records set – an album that shows that Berry always had a lot more to offer than some of his oldies rocker contemporaries! Sure, there's a few hits here, but the overall quality of the music is more in the mode of Chess blues of the time – lots of raw backings that are as heavy on piano lines and romping rhythms as they are Chuck's own searing lead guitar – a sound that definitely sets the tone for generations to come, and which is always heard best here in its early hoke-free setting. The whole album's wonderful, and even familiar hits sound newly brilliant in this context – a smoking lineup that includes "Jo Jo Gunne", "Around & Around", "Hey Pedro", "Anthony Boy", "Sweet Little Rock & Roller", "Almost Grown", "Roll Over Beethoven", and "Maybellene". David BowieDavid Bowie (mono version – picture disc) ... LP
Deram/Republic, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99 35.99
Genius, pure genius from a young David Bowie – an album that we've always treasured as much as Ziggy Stardust! This set's pre-Hunky Dory, pre-Space Oddity – and it's an amazing little record that's almost completely devoid of guitars – instead using weird woodwinds (lots of oboe!), soaring strings, and offbeat orchestrations to carry off the tunes – all of which are as weird, mad, and wonderful as anything Bowie wrote in later years! The subject matter of the songs is almost a dark reflection of the picture postcard England that you'd find in work by The Kinks – the local pederast, weird guy who lives with his mum, old military geezer who can't get out of the past, cross-dressing soldiers, a gravedigger about to meet his death, and hip Londoners gallivanting all over town – all delivered with a sharpness that's stunning. We honestly think the record is flawless – incredibly complicated instrumentally, but incredibly groovy too – with all the edge you'll always love in Bowie, but in a fresh young flavor too. Years back, as young Bowie-heads, we always passed this one by – assuming it was unformed early roughness – but it's not, and is an incredible album that would have been more than enough for any other artist to build a career on. Titles include "Uncle Arthur", "Sell Me A Coat", "Rubber Band", "Love You Till Tuesday", "There Is A Happy Land", "When I Live My Dream", "Maids Of Bond Street", "We Are Hungry Men", "She's Got Medals", and "Please Mr Gravedigger". A great little album of tripped-out folk rock by Sandy Bull, with more of a funky and jazzy edge than you'd expect. Bull plays most of the instruments on the album – including guitar and percussion, which dominate the set, plus a bit of electric instrumentation on the groovier tracks. The set's got some great open-ended numbers that take the experimental folk sound of the late 60s, and filter it through an ESP-like approach to hippy rock – with bits of modalism that make the numbers hold together nicely, and groove where you wouldn't expect them to! Titles include "Sweet Baby Jumper", "Gotta Be Juicy", "Carnival Jump", "Chesseburger", and "Easy Does It". (Folk/Country, Rock) LP

Vanguard, 1963. Very Good ... $19.99 23.99
Mindblowing minimalism from the legendary Sandy Bull – an artist who might have had acoustic roots in folk music, but who was instantly turning his music into something else – drawing on modal styles of Eastern music, European generations of expression on guitar, jazz-based improvisation – and maybe even prefiguring work to come from composers like Terry Riley and La Monte Young! This album's one of Bull's first, and it's pure genius right from the start – with a side-long performance on the incredible "Blend", which features slight drums from jazz musician Billy Higgins – which Sandy extrapolates these long passages on acoustic guitar. Side two features the fantastic "Carmina Burana Fantasy" on banjo – a kind of trans-historical performance that's right up there with John Fahey's best of the decade – alongside equally mindblowing "Non Nobis Domine" and "Little Maggie" – and the closing electric guitar genius of "Gospel Tune". A strange little record from the days when the music industry had so much money to throw around, they could make sessions like these! The record is sort of a space rock opera – featuring a huge cast of stars like Cooper, Moon, Hopkins, John Entwistle, Jim Dandy, Eddie Jobson, Elkie Brooks, Justin Hayward, Bill Bruford, and others. The overall feel of the work is a bit like the Rocky Horror Show – a high camp, heavy rock parody of a vintage artform (in this case, the radio space opera.) The musicianship is actually pretty darn strong, even if the overall concept is a bit silly. Tracks include "I'm Flash", "Country Cooking", "What's Happening", "Space Pirates", and "Blast Off". One of the great, lost, under-discovered albums on Atlantic from the late 60s – the little-circulated debut of singer Scott Fagan – a very unusual talent who mixes soulful currents with a very personal singer-songwriter approach! Scott's sound is never too polished – he's certainly not trying to be a blue-eyed soul act here – but the music has these currents of organ, electric bass, and occasional groovy rhythms that make for a very compelling counterpoint to his raspy, island-bred vocals. All tunes are originals by Scott – and arrangements are by Horace Ott on most numbers, which might account for the soulful vibe. The album is completely unique – one of those sets that, if you dig it, you'll never find anything to match it – and titles include "In My Head", "South Atlantic Blues", "Crying", "Nothing But Love", "Tenement Hall", "Crystal Ball", and "In Your Hands". John Lennon revisits the rock and roll canon after years of emotionally charged solo material – a move that was partially imposed by legal necessity, but got even more messed up from there – culminating a solid, set of pure Rock N Roll in '75! Includes sessions produced by Lennon in fall of '74, plus the 4 tracks that survived the '73 sessions with Spector. Includes "Be-Bop-A-Lula", "Stand By Me", "Rip It Up/Ready Teddy", "Ain't That A Shame", "Sweet Little Sixteen", "Slippin' And Slidin'", "Peggy Sue", "Bony Moronie", "Just Because" and more. LP

Liquid LiquidLiquid Liquid EP ... LP
99 Records, Early 80s. Near Mint- ... $29.99
A groundbreaking little record – and one that's hardly ever been matched again! Liquid Liquid sprang onto the scene with this amazing debut EP for 99 Records – a set that's got a wicked blend of funky drums, post-punk darkness, and this cool criss-crossing of modes that perfectly sums up the genius of the New York scene at the time! The record features lots of percussion throughout – drums, roto toms, congas, and plenty more – mixed with these brooding basslines that remind us of Jah Wobble at his best, and echoey production that almost feels like an American take on Martin Hannett at his best – especially at those moments when weird, eerie vocals drift through the instrumentation, barely at the edge of hearing. Titles include the classic "Bellhead" – plus "Groupmegroup", "Rubbermiro", "Lub Dupe", and "New Walk". (Soul, Rock) LP

LoveLove ... LP
Elektra, 1966. Very Good+ ... $39.99
Love's first album – a seminal bit of Sunset Strip rock, and every bit as powerful today as it was in the 60s! The style's a bit sharper-edged than the group's classic and more familiar Forever Changes set, but it's still pretty darn great – a completely fresh batch of guitar-heavy tunes that bristle with a sound that's a lot more sinister than some of the group's contemporaries. There's a few folksy or bluesy elements in the mix, but they're almost used in a way that parodies bigger acts of the time – turning the familiar into the freaky, all with a sense of power that's simply mindblowing. Titles include the group's excellent version of Burt Bacharach's "My Little Red Book", plus "Hey Joe", "Emotions", "A Message To Pretty", "Mushroom Clouds", "And More", and "Coloured Balls Falling". LP
(Stereo big E red label pressing. Cover has a cut corner, but is great otherwise!)

LoveReel To Real ... LP
RSO, 1974. Near Mint- ... $34.99
Quite an obscure one by Love – a mid 70s record that actually has quite a bit of soul in the mix! The album almost seems to be going for a Sly Stone approach – expanding the group past Arthur Lee and crew with a host of additional players that include Harvey Mandel, Bobby Lyle, and Joey Deguero. There's still plenty of bluesy and rocky tracks – but there's also a great cover of William DeVaughn's "Be Thankful For What You Got" – done in a chunky mode that really hits a great groove with us (and which is proof that people were covering the tune even back when it was first released!) Other tracks move between soulful rock, Thin Lizzy-esque compressed guitar numbers, and other styles that show a bit more soul than might be expected. Titles include "Time Is Like A River", "Everybody's Gotta Live", "You Said You Would", "Busted Feet", "With A Little Energy", and "Who Are You". LP

Warner, 1969. Very Good ... $1.99 5.99
Sunshine pop from late 60s Florida – a cool little set from Mercy, a group that features a sweet mixture of guy and gal vocals over some nicely gentle rhythms! Production is by Brad Shapiro and Steve Alaimo, but the Warner release of the album seems to give it a cool sort of sophistication too – almost a darker take on more mainstream pop styles of the time, with a wry undercurrent that's hard to describe, but which sets the album apart nicely. Instrumentation includes organ and 12 string guitar underneath the vocals – and titles include "Love Can Make You Happy", "Forever My Love", "The Morning's Come", "Sounds Of Silence", "Love Is Blue", and "Do I Wanna Live My Life With You". Metallica's breakout smash, the album that catapulted the band and the thrash metal genre to the top of the charts. While the production shines just a little brighter then the first few albums, the band is far from extinguishing their torch as metal trailblazers – to this point, there's very few songs as heavy as "Enter Sandman" got into regular airplay rotation and the most of the album hits even harder, even as they fully embraced the more melodic capabilities they barely touched on in the past. Includes "Enter Sandman", "Sad But True", "Nothing Else Matters", "Don't' Tread On Me", "Holier Than Thou" and more. LP

Reprise/Rhino, 1971. Used ... $9.99
One of the greatest albums ever from Joni Mitchell – and maybe one of the most go-to records in her legendary catalog! The record set a new high mark for singer/songwriter material in the 70s – and there's an intimate, upfront quality here that's even more striking than Mitchell's early work – personal storytelling, with a slightly poetic vibe, set to spare acoustic backing that really makes the presence of the lyrics stand out even more. Well worth all the praise and attention the album's gotten for decades – with titles that include "All I Want", "My Old Man", "Little Green", "Carey", "Blue", "California", "This Flight Tonight", "River", "A Case Of You", and "The Last Time I Saw Richard". ✨✧ Modern LoversJonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers ... LP
Beserkley, 1976. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
The second album from the Modern Lovers – but one that's completely different than the first! In an oft-told story, Jonathan Richman had a complete musical turnaround in the space between the records – shirking off the proto-punk of his roots (which was also a huge inspiration to the UK and US punk scenes to come) – and instead going into more personal material, delivered with the upfront and open emotionality that would mark Richman's music for decades to come! The shift is actually a great one – a way of really finding his own mark, and creating a sound that's completely unique – music that's surprisingly ageless, and with themes that nobody else could deliver this well. Titles include "Rockin Shoppin Center", "Back In The USA", "Important In Your Life", "New England", "Lonely Financial Zone", "Hi Dear", "Hey There Little Insect", and "Spring Time". LP
(Original pressing – BZ-0048 – with yellow inner sleeve. Cover has a cut corner, but looks fantastic overall.)

Rhino, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
The Monkees had so many fantastic records during their short span of recording, nearly all of them might well be "greatest hits" – but this set does a nice job of slimming the selection down to focus on some of the most long-lasting tracks from the group! There's a few killer Boyce & Hart compositions, produced by the duo too – and the set also features contributions from other 60s pop heavyweights, like Chip Douglas, Neil Diamond, Jeff Barry, and the duo of Carole King & Gerry Goffin – all of whim give the foursome some great material, on tunes that include "Theme From The Monkees", "Last Train To Clarksville", "She", "Listen To The Band", "A Little Bit Me A Little Bit You", "Daydream Believer", "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "Steppin Stone", "I'm A Believer", and "I Wanna Be Free". Shinsegye/Cobra Rose (South Korea), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
A wild little record from the Korean scene of the 70s – served up by a band of boys (and one gal), but not the sort of boy band that you'd hear in contemporary K-Pop! Instead, there's a heady, growling sort of groove to the whole record – not entirely hard rock, but touched with an understanding of that mode, which is then carried out in varied ways that really make the most of the dramatic vocals in Korean! Lyrics are sometimes very bold, sometime sweeter – and the instrumentation has fuzzy guitars and organ lines that echo some of the Japanese modes of the late 60s, but with some slightly different phrasing. All titles are in Korean, as are the lyrics – but there's a very groovy, universal sort of appeal to the set! LP

Notes From The UndergroundNotes From The Underground ... LP
Vanguard, 1968. Near Mint- ... $44.99
The only album ever from this trippy little combo from the 60s Berkeley scene! Notes From The Underground were contemporaries of Country Joe & The Fish, and share a similar mix of folk and country-styled roots mixed with a bit of pre-hippie rock – but their overall sound is a bit more focused, and gets some nice jazzy inflections here from keyboardist Skip Rose – who plays piano, organ, and even a bit of harpsichord on the set! Rose's lines really help spin the album in a different path from some of its contemporaries – not just on the set's unusual instrumental take on Herbie Hancock's "Cantaloupe Island", but also on the vocal numbers as well – where rolling piano lines offset the guitar nicely. Titles include "Who Needs Me", "Tristesse", "Where I'm At", "Follow Me Down", "I Wish I Was A Punk", and "Down In The Basement". LP

Mainstream/Sundazed, Late 1960s. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the hippest groups of the 60s to blend Eastern influences and Western rock music – a nicely lean trio that comes across with results that are even cooler than some of their contemporaries! Part of the record's strength is its leanness – as other instrumentation might have gotten in the way a bit more, and larger arrangements might have made the whole thing sound a bit fake. Yet instead, there's a raw quality to the record that recalls similar east/west experiments on Vanguard Records at the time – served up by a group that features Guy Duris on electric oud and electric sitar, Bruno Giet on electric minitar, and Farshid Golesorkhi on electric melodica and dumbek! Vocals are by all three, but there's a very strong focus on the instrumentation too – on titles that include "Fruit Of The Desert", "Layla", "Birds Of India", "Train To Bombay", "Caravan Of Silk", "Azaar", "Cobra Fever", "A Little Star", and "Cobra Fever". Gram Parsons/Flying Burrito BrosSleepless Nights ... LP
A&M, Mid 70s. Near Mint- ... $36.99 43.99
A gritty little gem in the Gram Parsons/Burritos catalog – mostly covers of classic honky tonk tunes! Many of the tracks were recorded for what would have been an honest, earnest, hard country album that was never fully realized – eventually paired with a few other tracks of similar vintage and some outtakes with Emmylou, then released as a posthumous Gram Parsons/Flying Burrito Bros LP. Gram is hardly acknowledged by the country music establishment to this day, but this set shows that he loved and respected the songs of Merle Haggard (Gram's supposed cultural opposite at the time, so little did the world actually know), Buck Owens, The Louvin Brothers and the endless lost highway of roadhouse jukebox classics – played here with a boozy after hours swagger! Tracks include "Brand New Heartache", "Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down", "Sing Me Back Home", "Crazy Arms", "Close Up The Honky Tonks", "Honky Tonk Women", "Dim Lights" and more. LP

PeopleCeremony – Buddah Meet Rock ... LP
Teichiku/Lawson (Japan), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $43.99 49.99
Quite a weird little record – part psychedelia, but with some really rootsy elements – and also some odd use of recorded music as well! The sound here is really mindblowing – experimental and trippy, but never too free or over the top – and the core instrumentation includes lots of fuzzy guitar, organ, and rough percussion – plus additional vocals in parts, and even a bit of sitar as well! The production abstracts some of the sounds nicely, but never too much – and at times a more traditional Japanese style of music lurks in the background, possibly as a brief nod to the Buddha in the title. Most unusually, though, is that the first track on the record features part of a David Axelrod album playing in the background! There's clearly an Axelrod influence going on – both in the structure and sound of the record – although the group also take things very much in their own direction too. Titles include "Shomyo (part 1)", "Flower Strewing", "Prologue", and "Prayer (parts 1 & 2)". (Japanese, Rock) LP
(Great Japanese pressing – with obi!)
