A fantastic early 70s album from Jim Sullivan – one of the few that he ever gave us before departing the planet, and a set that was one of a handful of albums issued by the Playboy Records imprint! The sound is a lot more rootsy than anything you'd ever hear at Hugh Hefner's mansion, though – very faithful to the spirit of Jim's classic UFO album, but also with these added light arrangements that really open up the lyrics too – in a way that maybe seems to let Sullivan focus even more strongly on his own vocal interpretation of his words, all with a sound that makes the whole thing one of the overlooked singer/songwriter masterpieces of the time. Almost a late British invasion group – and a pretty darn groovy one at that! The Magic Lanterns hail from the UK, but they've got a sound that's picked up some of the Sunshine pop and jazzier touches of the US pop scene in the late 60s – heard to great effect on the title hit "Shame Shame", but coming through nicely throughout the record, which seems to benefit strongly from arrangements by the likes of Big Jim Sullivan, John Paul Jones, and Reg Tilsley. Easily the best-remembered album by Labi Siffre – thanks to some well-used sample tracks over the years! But over and above the fame of the funky tunes "The Vulture" and "I Got The", the record's a key part of Siffre's 70s catalog – a record that's as great for its complex songwriting and deeply personal lyrics as it is for its Fender Rhodes lines, and tight musical backings from the combo of Big Jim Sullivan. All titles here are originals, and even when the groove slows down there's a depth that clearly marks Labi as one of the best singer/songwriters of the 70s – a talent who's been finally rediscovered in recent years, although sometimes only remembered for a few jazzy hooks from these tunes, and not the strength of the whole magilla!
