The classic debut from one of the weirdest concept groups of the 60s – a mime rock band brought together by producer Lew Futterman – who'd also worked on some killer funky jazzy sessions with Brother Jack McDuff! The style here is psychedelic pop through and through – and although the group didn't speak, they do sing (is that really mime?) – and work in a groovy sing-song blend of reeds and rockish rhythms, one that definitely has some of the same sharp changes and funky undercurrents you'd find in Futterman's jazz projects – although honed down here into much shorter Sunshine tunes! The album's a very unique little record – and oddly the group flourished for years. But somehow this first record has a charm that's really undeniable – and is maybe still their best effort ever. Sweet acoustic swing from the Central Park Sheiks – a strange combo that mix together folk, country, and jazz influences in a gently swaying sound! The style is one that flourished strongly in the 70s, but which has roots that go back many years before – kind of a hip recasting of nostalgic modes for the post-hippy generation – with a groove that was hardly ever carried off this well. The group are steeped in influences from western swing and acoustic folk years, but they've also got a hipper quality too – a leanness that's free from cliches or simple rehashes of the old days. Felix Cavaliere may be best known to some for his work in the Rascals – but years later, he stepped out as a solo act on his own – with a sound that nicely drew from all of his early work on Atlantic Records! The sound here is kind of a late 70s update of the blue-eyed mode that Felix had with his earlier group – given a bit more of an AOR spin in the production, through use of a top-shelf array of jazz fusion players in the backings. Despite the pianos on the cover, Cavaliere mostly plays Fender Rhodes and organ next to his vocals – on titles that include "Only A Lonely Heart Sees", "All Or Nothing", "People Got To Be Free", "Outside Your Window", "Love Is The First Day Of Spring", "You Turned Me Around", and "Good To Have Love Back". Tthe lost 1975 release from Kilburn & The High Road – Ian Dury's fantastic, and at the time, completely anomalous group of pub rock outcasts! The Kilburn sound is tough to describe even now – traces of Phil Spector's rock & soul, ragged 50s jazz, and drunken pub rock make up the sounds that back up Ian's wickedly dry sing-speak monologues – this clearly influenced people from Elvis Costello to Madness to who knows how many others. Ian went on to have more notoriety on the seminal Stiff Records, but this record originally released on Dawn sounds nearly as great to our ears. Oh, but to have a time machine and be able to go back and see this group in action – must've been amazing! LP, Vinyl record album

Chicago's second album – not as familiar as the first, and with some really great moments! The group is working here in the same extended-length format as on their debut, going for some more complicated tunes spread across the album's double length – jazzy riffing still firmly in place, and going for some vocal moments that almost have a nice Brother-era Beach Boys sound to them. Includes the great "Make Me Smile", plus the cuts "Poem For The People", "In The Country", "Wake Up Sunshine", "25 Or 6 To 4", "To Be Free", "Fancy Colours", "West Virginia Fantasies", "Where Do We Go From Here", and "Memories Of Love".
