VariousFunction Underground – The Black & Brown American Rock Sound 1969 to 1974 ... CD
Now Again, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 17.98
The deepest of the deep from the American scene at the start of the 70s – groups so hip they weren't quite soul, weren't quite rock – and instead kind of a funky hybrid of both! After opening our ears to countless underground sounds from around the globe, the Now Again label turn back to some of the territory of its roots – the hinterland of groups who labored mostly in obscurity, but left behind a few funky 45s that have become the stuff of legend – and which show us that there was a much bigger psychedelic funk underground out there besides groups like Funkadelic or the early Ohio Players! As always with the label, the history is really given its due, thanks to very detailed notes – alongside titles that include "Down By The River" by Purple Snow, "There's A Wrinkle In Our Time" by 1984, "Function Underground" by We The People, "Corruption Is The Thing" by Creations Unlimited, "Jimi's Guitar Raps With The Bass" by Jimi Macon, "I'm A Man" by Cisneros & Garza Group, "Just Got To Be Free" by Black Conspirators, "BL Movement" by Blaclites, and "The Siesta Is Over" by The Revolution. (Funky Compilations, Rock) CD

✨✧ Buster Brown BandPopsicle Toes ... LP
Providenciales (France), 1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet set of grooves from this obscure Texas group of the early 80s – a blue-eyed combo who draw plenty of inspiration from the more soulful side of AOR – and who serve up tracks here that nicely span both sides of the spectrum! There's an inherent warmth to the sharp instrumentation on the record, giving the whole thing a similar funky soul quality to some of the work on the Austin Fable Records label from a few years before – and although the group recorded these tracks over the span of a few years, and put them together as an album of demos, the whole thing finally gets a proper release after all these years – complete with new liner notes by David Ritz! Titles include "Say It", "Endless Possibilities", "Day Or Night", "Shock Proof", and two versions of the super-catchy "Baby Don't Lie". LP, Vinyl record album

Chuck BerryChuck Berry/More Chuck Berry ... CD
Chess/BGO (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A double-helping of Chuck Berry brilliance from his early years on Chess Records – music that always has way way more to offer than you might think! Sure, some of Chuck's hits are very familiar – and sure, the man could later be a bit of a parody of himself – but there's no denying the power of this early material, and the revolutionary way Chuck had of playing guitar – rooted in blues, paving the way to rock, and also opening the door to lots more funky soul in years to come! The guitar work alone is worth the price of admission, but the songs and vocals are wonderful too – and the CD features 26 titles that include "Down The Road A Piece", "Mad Lad", "Sweet Little Rock & Roller", "Anthony Boy", "Little Queenie", "Oh Baby Doll", "Confessin The Blues", "Almost Grown", "Jo Jo Gunne", "Wee Wee Hours", "Too Much Monkey Business", and "Brown Eyed Handsome Man". Johnny HallydayFlagrant Delit (2LP set – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Philips/Universal (France), 1971. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99 39.99
A really great record from French rocker Johnny Hallyday – a great artist who's really letting his style open up here – recording in London, and using some modes that are a bit funky at times, and also touched with some elements that were coming out of the LA scene at the start of the 70s too! Arrangements are mostly by Mickey Jones and Tommy Brown, who'd done some excellent work with Hallyday on earlier records – and the music is kind of a post-Muscle Shoals/Memphis sound, with lots of soulful piano, bubbling organ riffs, riffing guitar, and backings that are generally more in the soul/rock camp than in Hallyday's earlier pop rock style – all of which seems to really bring out some great qualities in Johnny's vocals too! Titles include "La Joi", "L'Autre Motif", "Flagrant Delit", "Fils De Personne", and "Fille De La Nuit". 2LP set features a full bonus record of unissued material from the original sessions – lots of alternate takes, and the unissued tunes "Waterloo" and "Reste". Johnny HallydayFlagrant Delit (3CD set – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Philips/Universal (France), 1971. New Copy ... About February 23, 2024 (delayed)
French rocker Johnny Hallyday hits the 70s, with a sound and style that's a bit funky, and a bit touched by some of the crossover American trends coming out of the LA rock scene. This one's arranged mostly by Mickey Jones and Tommy Brown, who'd done some excellent work with Hallyday on earlier records – and the music is kind of a post-Muscle Shoals/Memphis sound, with lots of honky tonk piano, bubbling organ riffs, and backings that are generally more in the soul/rock camp than in Hallyday's earlier pop rock style. RascalsPeaceful World ... LP
Columbia, 1971. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $7.99
Nothing too peaceful here – at least not in a sleepy sort of way – as The Rascals are really hitting on all burners, and starting to mix a bit of funk in with their groove! The record's a great extension of the group's last work on Atlantic – and it takes that already-righteous territory, and furthers it a bit more with some heavy rhythms on the bottom, and nicely jamming guitar work on the top! There's a great sense of soul that informs the whole album – even at some of the more rockish points – and titles include the excellent side-long cut "Peaceful World", a long instrumental workout with a nice slow bubbling funky sound that's almost in the style of Chicano rock. The albumf eatures guest work from jazz players like Hubert Laws on flute, Alice Coltrane on harp, Garnett Brown on trombone, Joe Garrell on tenor sax, and Joe Newman on trumpet – and other titles include "Little Dove", "Visit To Mother Nature Land", "Happy Song", "Icy Water", "Sky Trane", and "In & Out Of Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Cover has ringwear, edge wear, and a 2 Record Set sticker.)

✨✧ Browning BryantBrowning Bryant (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Warner/Big Pink (South Korea), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Some sweet Allen Toussaint production!Browning Bryant's best remembered for a catchy but cloying pop hit – yet this record shows a completely different side of the singer, one that's captured beautifully through the production and arrangements of Allen Toussaint! Some of Browning's country-inspired modes are in place, but the heavy Nola touches from Toussaint really push things in a different directions – sometimes with direct funky touches, other times with a gently snapping groove that's very different than we might have expected from some of Browning's other material! Titles include "Say You Will", "Liverpool Fool", "Losing", "Cover Girl", "Blinded By Love", "Home", "Performance", "Leave The Rest To Molly", and "You Might Say". CD
