DonovanGift From A Flower To A Garden (Epic) ... LP
Epic, 1967. Very Good- 2LP Box Set ... $9.99
One of the trippiest albums ever from Donovan, as you might guess from the title – a double-length gem that's filled with wonderfully groovy tunes! The set was cut during Donovan's killer years with producer Mickie Most in the late 60s – and it's got an instrumental feel that's even more laidback than some of his others from the time – mostly hip small combo instrumentation that features organ from Mike O'Neil, flute from Harold McNair, and vibes from Mike Carr – all done with some hip jazzy touches underneath Donovan's lead acoustic guitar – a folk-funk blend that's totally great, and which clearly set the scene for countless other imitations to come! Nobody can touch Donovan's charm at this point, though – and the album's a treasure through and through – filled with great tunes that include "Wear Your Love Like Heaven", "Skip A Long Sam", "Sun", "Little Boy In Corduroy", "Oh Gosh", "Under The Greenwood Tree", "Song Of The Naturalist's Wife", "Lay Of The Last Tinker", "The Lullaby Of Spring", "The Magpie", "Epistle To Derroll", "The Land Of Doesn't Have To Be", and "Mad John's Escape". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ CatfishGet Down/Live Catfish ... CD
Epic/BGO (UK), 1970. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Two classics from Catfish – back to back in a single set! First up is the self-titled Catfish – a killer classic from Bob "Catfish" Hodge – a hell of a singer from the heady Detroit scene of the 60s, and one who really made his mark with this fantastic debut on Epic Records! Bob's a blues-inspired artist at the core, but he opens up here with enough freak and fuzz to match the music of Shuggie Otis at the start of the 70s – thanks to great guitar from Mark Manko – and like some of Shuggie's first two sets on Epic, the whole thing is a mad mix of blues and rock, funk and soul – with searing guitar solos that really hold the whole thing together! The whole thing's a seminal effort for pushing this style of music past any blues rock cliches – and titles include "Catfish", "No Place To Hide", "The Hawk", "Sundown Man", "Tradition", and "Catfish/Get High Get Naked Get Down". Live Catfish is maybe the best-known of the two classic Catfish albums from the start of the 70s – a searing live set recorded in the group's hometown of Detroit, with a raw, ragged style that sets them up with all of their other hip contemporaries in the Motor City! This time around, Dallas Hodge handles the guitar with a mix of blues roots and freaky fuzz – a perfect match for the rough-edged vocals of Bob "Catfish" Hodge – as the group starts the set with Motown material, the moves into some even headier tunes of their own! Titles include "Money", "Nowhere To Run", "Letter To Nixon", "Mississippi River", and "Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On". CD

Sure, the cover's a bit dated – but the politics have stayed surprisingly strong over the years – as has the music as well! Keep in mind that The Clash were waging war in the Mideast years before Desert Storm – in this searing mix of London punk, rocksteady roots, and slight new wave elements – delivered here with a surprising sense of self that really gave the whole thing a sense of wit – and more than enough legs to keep on going without collapsing under the passage of time! Titles include the hit "Should I Stay Or Should I Go", the classic "Rock The Casbah", and the tracks "Ghetto Defendant", "Car Jamming", "Know Your Rights", "Straight To Hell", and "Inoculated City". ClashGive Em Enough Rope (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Epic (Japan), 1978. Used ... $19.99
The second album from The Clash – ferocious, melodic and masterful bits of barbed greatness from the group – the greatest flaw of which is that it's not the first album. They're still completely great, playing in peak form even with the less shambling, slightly more polished production of Sandy Pearlman. This one stands out beautifully to us nowadays, since most of the songs aren't as overplayed as the more zeitgeiest-y earlier ones or the Mtv hits that came later on. Essential!! Titles include "Julie's In The Drug Squad", "All The Young Punks", "Last Gang In Town", "Guns On The Roof", "Cheap-Skate", "Drug-Stabbing Time", and "Safe European Home". CD

ClashLondon Calling (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Epic, 1979. New Copy 2 LPs (reissue)... $34.99
Quite possibly the crowning masterpiece by The Clash – and a record that certainly pushed them out of the punk rock ghetto and into the collections of countless mainstream folks over the years! This is the set that really pushed the group over the top – the one that harnessed all the best energy of the previous two records and gave it a strong new focus – one that draws on roots as deep as the late 50s Elvis reference of the cover art, but which also bubbled over with newly approaching 80s musical ideas and politics! Yet the message never gets in the way of the guitar-heavy tuneful appeal of the songs – ringing out for decades on classics like "Train In Vain", "London Calling", "Spanish Bombs", "Lost In The Supermarket", "Guns Of Brixton", "Clampdown", and "Rudy Can't Fail". ✨✧ ClashSandinista! (Japanese paper sleeve edition – 3CD set) ... CD
Epic (Japan), 1980. Used 3CDs ... Out Of Stock
The longest album ever from The Clash – a stunning triple LP set that really shows the group bristling with new ideas and energy throughout! There's a hell of a lot going on here – some cuts that are every bit as strong as the previous records, others that offer a few mis-steps but in a wonderfully playful way – and a few more that really hit this sort of unique mix of genres and politics that could only be summed up as Clash-like at its best! Bits of hip hop, reggae, new wave, funk, and more mix together beautifully – and the album's got a hell of a lot of charm and character, even if you're skipping past a few of the cuts you don't like as much as the others. 36 tracks in all – and titles include "The Magnificent Seven", "Hitsville UK", "Junco Partner", "The Leader", "Police On My Back", "Midnight Log", "The Call Up", "Washington Bullets", "Broadway", "Rebel Waltz", "Look Here", "The Crooked Beat", "Somebody Got Murdered", "Lose This Skin", "Charlie Don't Surf", "Kingston Advice", "Corner Soul", "Let's Go Crazy", "The Sound Of Sinners", "Living In Fame", "Silicone On Sapphire", and "Career Opportunities". Epic, 1968. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Donovan at his jazzy best – really picking up where Mellow Yellow left off, and pushing the jazz influences in his sound to deeper lengths! Mr Leitch is a million miles away from his Dylanesque early roots on the set – and is working in territory that's completely his own – a beautiful blend of folk, psychedelic, and jazz-based modes – handled with simple charm throughout, and performed by a group that includes funky sound library genius Alan Hawkshaw on piano, and the great Harold McNair on flute! The title track "Barabajagal" is one of Donovan's most amazing tunes of all time – a funky little number that dances around with some great heavy drums, and which also features guitar by a young Jeff Beck! Other titles include "The Love Song", "Trudi", "Atlantis", "Superlungs My Supergirl", "I Love My Shirt", and "Pamela Jo". LP, Vinyl record album

A wonderful complement to the Donovan studio albums from the late 60s – a well-recorded live date from the US. The style of the tunes is a bit different than some of their more famous album and single versions – with a relaxed approach to the work that leans a bit more on some of Donovan's folksy roots, but still features the jazzier touches that happened after his mid 60s "transformation" – thanks to plenty of great sax and flute from the legendary Harold McNair, who's a key part of the small combo on the set! Includes "Widow With Shawl", "Preachin Love", "The Fat Angel", "Celeste", "Poor Cow", "There Is A Mountain", "Isle Of Islay", "Young Girl Blues", and "Writer In The Sun". LP, Vinyl record album

Epic, 1968. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Easily one of the headiest Donovan albums of the 60s – a record that moves past the simple psychedelic pop of earlier hits, and into a range of mind-expanding themes and styles! There's a cerebral quality here that seems to take hold even on the simpler, catchier tunes – a deeply introspective approach that has Donovan working in a world that's really all his own – less concerned with hit singles, and more focused on a personal journey in music, one that ties together many strands of music borrowed from Celtic, West Indian, jazz, and folk sources. Arrangers are John Cameron and John Paul Jones – and titles include "Get Thy Bearings", "Peregrine", "The Entertaining Of A Shy Girl", "West Indian Lady", "Jennifer Juniper", "Tangier", "The River Song", "The Sun Is A Very Magic Fellow", and "Hi It's Been A Long Time". DonovanMellow Yellow ... LP
Epic, 1967. Very Good ... $16.99
Easily one of Donovan's most successful albums – but also a brilliant blend of folk and jazz that forged a bold new sound in the 60s! Part of the strength of the set comes from arranger John Cameron – an artist that we love for his jazz and easy work of the late 60s, and who's working here with players that include British jazzmen Phil Seamen, Tony Carr, Ronnie Ross, and Harold McNair! The instrumental component of the album alone is worth the price of admission – as Cameron gently blends together moddish and trippy styles, alongside some folksier vocals and guitar from Donovan. But it's also Donovan's own extrapolation of styles of the time that really makes the album a masterpiece – a strange post-folk mode of expression that's almost a British counterpart to the genius of Simon & Garfunkel, but which is arguably darker and more intellectual. Apart from classic hits like "Museum" and "Mellow Yellow", the album also features some moodier brilliance on tracks that include "The Observation", "Hampstead Incident", "Sunny South Kensington", "Writer In The Sun", "Sand & Foam", and "House Of Jansch". DonovanSunshine Superman ... LP
Epic, 1966. Very Good- ... $14.99
One of the grooviest albums of the 60s – and the first album in Donovan's legendary run with producer Mickie Most! The sound here is light years away from the heavy Dylan of Donovan's first recordings – and is steeped in eastern influences that sparkle in both the songwriting and arrangements – and which can be most strongly heard in the album's trademark use of tablas and electric sitar! Donovan's vocals are completely sublime, too – done in that raspy, almost lispy style that brings out all the best edges in his songwriting – and the lyrics of the tunes are a mind-expanding array of themes that really pushed the boundaries of 60s pop. Titles include the sublime classic "Sunshine Superman", plus "Bert's Blues", "The Fat Angel", "The Trip", "Celeste", "Three Kingfishers", and the funky funky "Season Of The Witch"! One of the few American albums ever issued by Georgie Fame – a great set of tracks from his early CBS years, put together with a package that was bound to appeal to US fans digging the Bonnie & Clyde movie! The work here is a hip mix of jazz, soul, and R&B styles – all served up with that Georgie Fame charm that made his music unlike anyone else's at the time. And although we're not sure, it appears that there's a few tracks here that might not have been issued on LP back in the UK – as the set list features 11 tracks that include "Mellow Yellow", "Bullets La Verne", "This Is Always", "Side By Side", "Blue Prelude", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Ask Me Nice", "When I'm Sixty Four", and "The Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde". An excellent little album from British vocalist Georgie Fame – one that has him moving way past the simple beat group sound of his roots, into a sophisticated style that mixes jazz vocalizing, hard grooving, and lots of rock/R&B influences! Georgie's still got his Mose Allison-inspired vocal style, but the band behind him is a lot more open-ended, and grooves along freely in these great organ riffing rhythms – open-ended and very swinging on some numbers, but in a way that's different from Fame's rougher-edged roots. Titles include "Oliver's Gone", "Somebody Stole My Thunder", "Fully Booked", "Inside Story", and "Seventh Son". (Vocalists, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Solo work from Michael Fennelly – not exactly a household name, but an artist who's well-remembered for his work in Curt Boettcher's Millennium and the later group – getting some strong post-Zombies production work from Chris White, and some extra help on the record from Rod Argent! Fennelly's voice has a nicely escalated range – the sort that's really at home on some of the more screaming rockers, but which also has a way of bringing an edge to some of the more laidback tracks too – which keeps most of the record relatively raw, and not as smooth as similar major label singer/songwriter efforts of the time. Barry Goldberg Blues BandBlowing My Mind ... LP
Epic, 1968. Very Good- ... $19.99
A rare electric blues-rock LP, recorded for Epic sometime in the late 60s! Organ and keyboard pounder Barry Goldberg jokingly dubbed his style "Jew Blues" – and it's really that kind of playful spirit that really kind of makes frenetic LP a minor gem, and well worth whatever effort it took to dig this out of Epic's expansive vaults. Goldberg's rough, barking vocals kind of give it strong garage rock feel, too – albeit with the rock-solid backing of session titans Charlie Musselwhite on blues harp, Chicago powerhouse Harvey Mandel and Roy Ruby on guitar, and wild Chicago drummer Maurice McKinley on the kit. Tracks include "Getting' It Down", "Mean Old World", "Twice A Man", "Big Boss Man", "Blowing My Mind", "Put Me Down", "That'll Be The Day", "Can't Stand To See You Go" and more. First up is Hangin Around The Observatory – an early gem from the great John Hiatt – a singer/songwriter who seems to spring into the world with a sound and style that's already fully formed! Hiatt recorded the album at Columbia's Nashville studios – which might emphasize some of the country currents in his music – but as always with his albums, there's a special, specific sort of vibe going on – smart songwriting, and an approach that's post-folk, with vocals that sometimes have a Randy Newman or Tom Waits sort of bite – a quality that maybe kept John far from the charts, but high in the hearts of critics and fans over the 70s. Titles include "Maybe Baby Say You Do", "Whistles In My Ears", "Full Moon", "Ocean", "Little Blue Song For You", and "Hangin Around The Observatory". On Overcoats, John Hiatt really finds his own groove – a special singer/songwriter mode that would make him one of the most distinct talents of his time – and part of a unique 70s lineage of new male singers, which might include Tom Waits and John Prine! As with both of those artists, there's a lot of older roots in Hiatt's music – but taken apart, and reworked towards newer modes – with especially smart songwriting that kind of sneaks up on you, especially when delivered with the raspy charms of John's vocals. Titles include "One More Time", "I'm Tired Of Your Stuff", "I Want Your Love Inside Of Me", "The Lady Of The Night", "Motorboat To Heaven", and "Smiling In The Rain". CD

Epic, Late 60s. Very Good ... $14.99
Sublime work from The Hollies – a cool US album that brings together some of their best bits from their 60s UK run on EMI! Some of the best numbers here were arranged by Johnny Scott – and titles include "King Midas In Reverse", "Would You Believe", "Maker", "Step Inside", "Butterfly", "Postcard", "Dear Eloise", and "Wishyouawish". HolliesEvolution ... LP
Epic, 1967. Very Good- ... $14.99
Wonderful work from The Hollies – from a time when the group was moving way past simple Brit Invasion pop – as you 'can probably guess from the cover and title! The Hollies hit a really special sort of sound here – slightly trippy, but still razor-sharp – making great use of the voice of Graham Nash, and also getting some perfect assistance on arrangements from Mike Vickers – who knows how to be ambitious with arrangements, but still keep things very focused! The tunes are overflowing with new ideas, but are still super-catchy too – and titles include "Water On The Brain", "Then The Heartaches Begin", "Rain On The Window", "Games We Play", "Lullaby To Tim", and "When Your Light Turned On". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label stereo pressing with 1B/1C matrix.)

✨✧ KakKak ... LP
Epic/Guerssen (Spain), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A seminal album from the Cali scene of the late 60s – by a group who only ever delivered this one full length set to Epic Records! Yet despite the lack of deeper catalog, Kak have a sound that rivals all the big names of the Bay Area scene that was exploding at the time – and although these guys hail upriver from Davis, CA – the mix of freak flag flying and full fuzz frenzy really makes the album an instant heady psych classic! The songs are great – very well-penned, with interesting lyrical elements – all produced with a quality that only intensifies their best qualities, instead of trying to soften them up for the radio or the charts. The whole thing's wonderful – a classic through and through – and titles include the long "Trieulogy" suite, plus "Disbelievin", "HCO 97658", "Lemonaide Kid", "Electric Sailor", "Bryte N Clear Day", "Flowing By", and "I've Got Time". LP, Vinyl record album
(Fantastic reissue pressing – with heavy vinyl, obi, and bonus insert of notes!)

✨✧ October CountryOctober Country ... CD
Cherry Red/Epic (UK), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pretty great set of sunshine pop – sweet vocals, often in harmony style, somewhere in the range of the Love Generation or Millenium, with slight traces of The Left Banke in the instrumentation. There's a nice use of strings that filters through the records – but the core sound is from the combo, and features some nice keyboards underneath the group's wonderfully full vocal sound. Titles include "She's Been Away", "Good To Be Around", "I Wish I Was A Fire", "October Country", "Painted Sky", "Cowboys & Indians", "Caryle's Theme", and "My Girlfriend Is A Witch". CD

Mike OldfieldTubular Bells ... LP
Virgin/Epic, 1973. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Easily one of the most successful albums of the British jazz rock years – but still a longtime favorite of ours as well! Mike Oldfield sets a whole new standard here for concept rock – not only by working on a single album-length composition that spans all of sides one and two, but also by playing all instruments himself – in a one man symphony of sound that's pretty darn great! The main theme of the piece will be recognizable from it's stripped-down use in The Exorcist – but we really love Oldfield's expansion on it here in a range of different overdubbed instruments, which are also sometimes processed – and then introduced by Mike in a spoken part that's one of the highlights of the album. Anthemic early 90s rock from Pearl Jam – one of the biggest debuts of all time and for good reason! Ten has a big, classic rock-reared sound, but done with such forthright sincerity and for the time, completely refreshing lack of macho posturing, it really was the perfect formula for a breakout smash in its era and it's worthy of its legacy, especially in retrospect! One classic song after another including "Once", "Alive", "Jeremy", "Why Go", "Black", Release", "Porch", "Oceans", "Garden", "Deep" and "Release". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Pure Food & Drug ActChoice Cuts ... LP
Epic, 1972. Very Good- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Mighty choice work from Pure Food & Drug Act – a studio supergroup with a heavy blues rock approach – thanks to heavy guitar from the great Harvey Mandel, and vocals and electric violin from Don Sugarcane Harris! The rest of the lineup is nice too – a quintet with Randy Resnick on rhythm guitar, Victor Conte on bass, and Paul Lagos on drums – but the real stars of the show are clearly Mandel and Harris, especially the former – as his presence here has a searing intensity that maybe even beats some of his own full albums of the time. Lots of long tracks – and titles include "What Goes Around Comes Around", "Do It Yourself", "A Little Soul Food", "Where's My Sunshine", "My Soul's On Fire", and "Eleanor Rigby".
