✨✧ DonovanGift From A Flower To A Garden (Epic) ... LP
Epic, 1967. Near Mint- 2LP Box Set ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the trippiest albums ever from Donovan, as you might guess from the title – a double-length gem that's filled with wonderfully groovy tunes! The set was cut during Donovan's killer years with producer Mickie Most in the late 60s – and it's got an instrumental feel that's even more laidback than some of his others from the time – mostly hip small combo instrumentation that features organ from Mike O'Neil, flute from Harold McNair, and vibes from Mike Carr – all done with some hip jazzy touches underneath Donovan's lead acoustic guitar – a folk-funk blend that's totally great, and which clearly set the scene for countless other imitations to come! Nobody can touch Donovan's charm at this point, though – and the album's a treasure through and through – filled with great tunes that include "Wear Your Love Like Heaven", "Skip A Long Sam", "Sun", "Little Boy In Corduroy", "Oh Gosh", "Under The Greenwood Tree", "Song Of The Naturalist's Wife", "Lay Of The Last Tinker", "The Lullaby Of Spring", "The Magpie", "Epistle To Derroll", "The Land Of Doesn't Have To Be", and "Mad John's Escape". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original US pressing, including the booklet.)

✨✧ Colin BlunstoneOne Year (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Epic/4 Men With Beards, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99 21.98
Amazing solo work from ex-Zombie Colin Blunstone – his first album after parting ways with his former group – and one of our favorite albums of all time! Blunstone's vocals were already amazing in The Zombies – especially near the end – but this set takes things even further, by blending his sublime lyrics with spare arrangements that often just feature simple string passages and warm piano parts – subtle accompaniment that leaves Colin strongly in the lead! The songs are wonderful – penned to recall the changes and issues of the year after the parting of the group – with plenty of help from old buddies Rod Argent and Chris White too. There's never been another record like this again, and there never will be – one of the true treasures of the greatest generation of music! Titles include "Let Me Come Closer To You", "I Can't Live Without You", "Smokey Day", and "Say You Don't Mind" – plus a fantastic cover of "Misty Roses", and the more rocking "She Loves The Way They Love Her". Randy CaliforniaKapt Kopter & The Fabulous Twirly Birds ... LP
Epic, 1972. Very Good+ ... $29.99
Heavy early 70s grooves from Randy California – the former Spirit guitarist, and a solid post Hendrix, post psychedelica album cut for Epic! Fellow Spirit veteran Ed Cassidy is on drums under a pseudonym, and other pseudonymous guests include Noel Redding – and all told, there's a trippy, echoey heaviness to the proceedings that's pretty sweet. Titles include "Downer", "Devil", "I Don't Want Nobody", a heavy, heavy take on "Day Tripper" and an equally wigged out cover of Paul Simon's "Mother And Child Reunion", plus "Things Yet To Come", "Rain", "Rainbow" and more. ✨✧ CatfishGet Down ... LP
Epic, 1970. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A killer classic from Bob "Catfish" Hodge – a hell of a singer from the heady Detroit scene of the 60s, and one who really made his mark with this fantastic debut on Epic Records! Bob's a blues-inspired artist at the core, but he opens up here with enough freak and fuzz to match the music of Shuggie Otis at the start of the 70s – thanks to great guitar from Mark Manko – and like some of Shuggie's first two sets on Epic, the whole thing is a mad mix of blues and rock, funk and soul – with searing guitar solos that really hold the whole thing together! The whole thing's a seminal effort for pushing this style of music past any blues rock cliches – and titles include "Catfish", "No Place To Hide", "The Hawk", "Sundown Man", "Tradition", and "Catfish/Get High Get Naked Get Down". Two classics from Catfish – back to back in a single set! First up is the self-titled Catfish – a killer classic from Bob "Catfish" Hodge – a hell of a singer from the heady Detroit scene of the 60s, and one who really made his mark with this fantastic debut on Epic Records! Live Catfish is maybe the best-known of the two classic Catfish albums from the start of the 70s – a searing live set recorded in the group's hometown of Detroit, with a raw, ragged style that sets them up with all of their other hip contemporaries in the Motor City! This time around, Dallas Hodge handles the guitar with a mix of blues roots and freaky fuzz – a perfect match for the rough-edged vocals of Bob "Catfish" Hodge – as the group starts the set with Motown material, the moves into some even headier tunes of their own! Titles include "Money", "Nowhere To Run", "Letter To Nixon", "Mississippi River", and "Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On". CD

ChaseChase ... LP
Epic, 1971. Very Good+ ... $5.99
The debut album from Chase – one of the hippest jazz rock combos of the 70s! The self-titled Chase album first burned onto the market in 1971 – and it's a great distillation of a groove that was bubbling around in various other segments at the time – some of the tighter big band rhythms of the late 60s, as you might find in the work of Maynard Ferguson or Woody Herman – mixed with the hipper rhythms from the rockish underground, particularly in the work of Blood Sweat & Tears or Chicago. Chase is a fair bit jazzier than both of those groups – as they often put the horns more upfront than the vocals – although most numbers do have some sort of vocals as well. Instrumentation is heavy on trumpets – which come together in blasting, blaring groove, even despite the smaller size of the combo – and Phil Porter lays down some great keyboard lines that really help some of the best tracks cook nicely. Titles include "Handbags & Gladrags", "Livin In Heat", "Open Up Wide", "Hello Groceries", "Boys & Girls Together", and "Invitation To A River". LP, Vinyl record album

A pair of albums from Chase – one of the hippest jazz rock combos of the 70s! Titles include "Handbags & Gladrags", "Livin In Heat", "Open Up Wide", "Hello Groceries", "Boys & Girls Together", and "Invitation To A River". Ennea is a jazz rock classic that still sounds pretty darn tasty today – forged on the heels of Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears, but with a sound that's leaner and meaner! The group's led by trumpeter Bill Chase – hence their name – and features lead vocals by GG Shinn and Terry Richards, both in a style that's got the same blue-eyed jazz soul overtones as that used by the groups mentioned above. The real strength of the tracks, though, is their jazzy backings – horn-heavy, as you'd expect, and hitting some great riffs and licks on the album's side-long title "suite", which features many instrumental passages. Titles include "Hades", "Aphrodite (parts 1 & 2)", "Zeus", "Poseidon", "Cronus", "It Won't Be Long", "I Can Feel It", and "Night". CD
(Hybrid Super Audio CD pressing – also works on standard CD players!)

Sure, the cover's a bit dated – but the politics have stayed surprisingly strong over the years – as has the music as well! Keep in mind that The Clash were waging war in the Mideast years before Desert Storm – in this searing mix of London punk, rocksteady roots, and slight new wave elements – delivered here with a surprising sense of self that really gave the whole thing a sense of wit – and more than enough legs to keep on going without collapsing under the passage of time! Titles include the hit "Should I Stay Or Should I Go", the classic "Rock The Casbah", and the tracks "Ghetto Defendant", "Car Jamming", "Know Your Rights", "Straight To Hell", and "Inoculated City". Epic, 1980. Used 2 CDs ... $5.99
The longest album ever from The Clash – a stunning triple LP set that really shows the group bristling with new ideas and energy throughout! There's a hell of a lot going on here – some cuts that are every bit as strong as the previous records, others that offer a few mis-steps but in a wonderfully playful way – and a few more that really hit this sort of unique mix of genres and politics that could only be summed up as Clash-like at its best! Bits of hip hop, reggae, new wave, funk, and more mix together beautifully – and the album's got a hell of a lot of charm and character, even if you're skipping past a few of the cuts you don't like as much as the others. 36 tracks in all – and titles include "The Magnificent Seven", "Hitsville UK", "Junco Partner", "The Leader", "Police On My Back", "Midnight Log", "The Call Up", "Washington Bullets", "Broadway", "Rebel Waltz", "Look Here", "The Crooked Beat", "Somebody Got Murdered", "Lose This Skin", "Charlie Don't Surf", "Kingston Advice", "Corner Soul", "Let's Go Crazy", "The Sound Of Sinners", "Living In Fame", "Silicone On Sapphire", and "Career Opportunities". Easily one of Donovan's most successful albums – but also a brilliant blend of folk and jazz that forged a bold new sound in the 60s – here in the original mono mix! Part of the strength of the set comes from arranger John Cameron – an artist that we love for his jazz and easy work of the late 60s, and who's working here with players that include British jazzmen Phil Seamen, Tony Carr, Ronnie Ross, and Harold McNair! The instrumental component of the album alone is worth the price of admission – as Cameron gently blends together moddish and trippy styles, alongside some folksier vocals and guitar from Donovan. But it's also Donovan's own extrapolation of styles of the time that really makes the album a masterpiece – a strange post-folk mode of expression that's almost a British counterpart to the genius of Simon & Garfunkel, but which is arguably darker and more intellectual. Apart from classic hits like "Museum" and "Mellow Yellow", the album also features some moodier brilliance on tracks that include "The Observation", "Hampstead Incident", "Sunny South Kensington", "Writer In The Sun", "Sand & Foam", and "House Of Jansch". One of the grooviest albums of the 60s – and the first album in Donovan's legendary run with producer Mickie Most! The sound here is light years away from the heavy Dylan of Donovan's first recordings – and is steeped in eastern influences that sparkle in both the songwriting and arrangements – and which can be most strongly heard in the album's trademark use of tablas and electric sitar! Donovan's vocals are completely sublime, too – done in that raspy, almost lispy style that brings out all the best edges in his songwriting – and the lyrics of the tunes are a mind-expanding array of themes that really pushed the boundaries of 60s pop. An excellent little album from British vocalist Georgie Fame – one that has him moving way past the simple beat group sound of his roots, into a sophisticated style that mixes jazz vocalizing, hard grooving, and lots of rock/R&B influences! Georgie's still got his Mose Allison-inspired vocal style, but the band behind him is a lot more open-ended, and grooves along freely in these great organ riffing rhythms – open-ended and very swinging on some numbers, but in a way that's different from Fame's rougher-edged roots. Big, heavy late 60s British rock from Gun – with the raw, lumbering and bluesy (or better, bloozy) power trio core that's fleshed out in the studio with horns and other more sweeping touches! It's wild stuff, a genuine precursor to heavy metal in the searing guitars, thundering drums and bass, and wild eyed vocals – we have to wonder of the label thought it was too menacing and brought in the strings and horns to make it more approachable – but it actually just makes it weirder, which we love! Titles include their hit "Race With The Devil" plus "The Sad Saga Of The Boy And The Bee", "Rupert's Travels", "Yellow Cab Man", "It Won't Be Long (Heartbeat)", "Sunshine", "Rat Race" and"Take Off". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label stereo pressing. Cover has ring and edgew.)

John HiattHangin Around The Observatory/Overcoats ... CD
Epic/BGO (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Two Epic albums from John Hiatt – back to back on a single CD! First up is Hangin Around The Observatory – an early gem from the great John Hiatt – a singer/songwriter who seems to spring into the world with a sound and style that's already fully formed! Hiatt recorded the album at Columbia's Nashville studios – which might emphasize some of the country currents in his music – but as always with his albums, there's a special, specific sort of vibe going on – smart songwriting, and an approach that's post-folk, with vocals that sometimes have a Randy Newman or Tom Waits sort of bite – a quality that maybe kept John far from the charts, but high in the hearts of critics and fans over the 70s. Titles include "Maybe Baby Say You Do", "Whistles In My Ears", "Full Moon", "Ocean", "Little Blue Song For You", and "Hangin Around The Observatory". On Overcoats, John Hiatt really finds his own groove – a special singer/songwriter mode that would make him one of the most distinct talents of his time – and part of a unique 70s lineage of new male singers, which might include Tom Waits and John Prine! As with both of those artists, there's a lot of older roots in Hiatt's music – but taken apart, and reworked towards newer modes – with especially smart songwriting that kind of sneaks up on you, especially when delivered with the raspy charms of John's vocals. Titles include "One More Time", "I'm Tired Of Your Stuff", "I Want Your Love Inside Of Me", "The Lady Of The Night", "Motorboat To Heaven", and "Smiling In The Rain". CD

✨✧ Dan HicksDan Hicks & His Hot Licks – Original Recordings ... LP
Epic, 1969. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The debut album from Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks – a brilliant little set, and quite possibly the truest realization of his subtle acoustic genius! The sound here is free from cliches that later got in the way with Hicks – and the album's a refreshing return to roots, but without any of the too-posturing modes of other groups like this from the time! Hicks keeps things real cool here – very subtle, and quite spare at times – with elements of acoustic swing, bluegrass, and country all bubbling underneath – but an overall execution that's somewhat focused and urbane. There's none of the too old-timey moments you might expect – and if anything, we're impressed at how freshly contemporary a bunch of acoustic hippies can sound here! Titles include "Slow Movin", "I Scare Myself", "Canned Music", "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away", "It's Bad Grammar Baby", and "Jukie's Ball". LP, Vinyl record album

Epic, 1967. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Wonderful work from The Hollies – from a time when the group was moving way past simple Brit Invasion pop – as you 'can probably guess from the cover and title! The Hollies hit a really special sort of sound here – slightly trippy, but still razor-sharp – making great use of the voice of Graham Nash, and also getting some perfect assistance on arrangements from Mike Vickers – who knows how to be ambitious with arrangements, but still keep things very focused! The tunes are overflowing with new ideas, but are still super-catchy too – and titles include "Water On The Brain", "Then The Heartaches Begin", "Rain On The Window", "Games We Play", "Lullaby To Tim", and "When Your Light Turned On". KakKak ... LP
Epic/Guerssen (Spain), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
A seminal album from the Cali scene of the late 60s – by a group who only ever delivered this one full length set to Epic Records! Yet despite the lack of deeper catalog, Kak have a sound that rivals all the big names of the Bay Area scene that was exploding at the time – and although these guys hail upriver from Davis, CA – the mix of freak flag flying and full fuzz frenzy really makes the album an instant heady psych classic! The songs are great – very well-penned, with interesting lyrical elements – all produced with a quality that only intensifies their best qualities, instead of trying to soften them up for the radio or the charts. The whole thing's wonderful – a classic through and through – and titles include the long "Trieulogy" suite, plus "Disbelievin", "HCO 97658", "Lemonaide Kid", "Electric Sailor", "Bryte N Clear Day", "Flowing By", and "I've Got Time". LP, Vinyl record album
(Fantastic reissue pressing – with heavy vinyl, obi, and bonus insert of notes!)

An overlooked Christmas album from Cyndi Lauper – recorded a bit after her big hits of the 80s, but still enough in that decade to have the right vintage feel for her voice! There's a few Christmas classics on the record, but there's also some original and unusual songs – which is always great with us – as our favorite sort of Christmas records are the ones where an artist really brings something new to the table! A slightly warmer sound than before from OMD – an album of well put together pop tunes that still hold true to the simple basis of their roots! At this point, the group's really got their sound down wonderfully – and they've also learned how to write slightly better pop hooks than before – still edgey and a bit dark, but also the kind of tunes that make you say "hey, what's this?" more than you might have with some of the earlier records. ✨✧ Spirit12 Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus ... LP
Epic, 1970. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The crowning achievement of Spirit – and a record that you probably could have found in any college dorm room in the early 70s! The record's really a cut above for their generation – an expansive effort that hangs together with a bit of a concept, and which interweaves strands of rock, folk, and a bit of jazz – yet also a record that has a lot more polish than other efforts of its type, and which trades a bit of psychedelic indulgence for a tighter focus that really lets the best tunes sparkle wonderfully! Production is great – clear, but trippy at the same time – and Randy California's guitar work has never sounded better. Titles include "Nature's Way", "Animal Zoo", "Love Has Found A Way", "Mr Skin", "Soldier", "Street Worm", and "Space Child". LP, Vinyl record album

Tin HouseTin House (with bonus 7" single) ... LP
Epic/Lion, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99
A hard rock trio with a hell of a sound – heard here on their one and only album from the 70s – a surprising major label debut on Epic Records, with top-shelf production from Rick Derringer! The album's got a searing burn right from the start – quite a heady brew for this young trio, who come on with the guitar complexities of Johnny Winter at times, and kind of the brooding, bassy bottom you might hear from the James Gang ag their best – although Tin House also have this more youthful, more sneering vibe too – one that's completely their own, and which has made this obscure debut a lost treasure for hard rock collectors over the decades! Titles include "I Want Your Body", "Be Good & Be Kind", "Personal Gain", "Jezebel Give Me Your Lovin", "Lady Of The Silent Opera", "Tomorrow", and "You've Gone Too Far". Beautiful reissue – with great sound, an insert with notes, and a bonus 7" replica EP – with the tracks "Be Good & Be Kind (mono)", "I Want Your Body (mono)", and unreleased tunes "Understand" and "Thanks To My Friends". LP, Vinyl record album
(Heavy vinyl, heavy cover, and great production overall!)
