A nicely focused little collection on the great Ferlin Husky – one that brings together some of his more upbeat tunes from the early generation of rock and roll – although the music is still pretty darn country overall! Or rather, hillbilly – said in the most respectful way of the time – as the cuts often have some bumping basslines that are clearly borrowed a bit from rockabilly, and have that wonderfully full Capitol Records production style of the late 50s – which can illuminate even a casual moment in a tune, and make Ferlin's wit and personality really come through in the vocals! Sublime swamp rock from the great Tony Joe White – one of his groundbreaking albums cut for the Monument label at the end of the 60s – a killer blend of southern rock steeped in funky soul! The backings are heavy in Hammond and fuzzy guitars – underscored by some really mighty drums, and just a bit of horns – giving the set a vibe that's somewhere between Memphis and Muscle Shoals, but with a definite detour into the garagey underground too! One of the most fully-formed albums from The Fugs – still quite hippy dippy, but with a focus that's sometimes missing in their other work! And despite the somewhat major label placement of the set, there's arguably even more power here than on the group's earlier indie sides – thanks to strong use of the best elements that make up the tunes. There's still a great mix of styles going on – from Buddist chanting, to sing-song poetry, to some countrified rock – and the album's got enough room for playful detours, but always snaps back into some stronger song-based modes. David Johansen's second post-New York Dolls solo record – and the first one where he really sheds the feral rock vibe – but with Mick Ronson on board as co-producer, it's still got plenty of pomp! David would go on to take many creative detours – but in this first real stretch, he's bringing in some Motown influences – with some R&B backing vocals here and there, along with ome sax, piano and other smoothed out touches. That said, it's not that huge of a jump – with some ruggedness and grit reminiscent of his earlier work –and it's got a bunch of really good songs. A private press relic from the Santa Cruz Mountains by Eddie Callahan – a really cool mix of soft rock melodies with soul searching lyricism and unpredictable instrumentation – one that's been heavily sought by collectors and is well worth it! There's a bit of post hippie spiritualism, but it a plainspoken, unpretentious way that's really endearing – and the music is totally creative. There's some laidback folk rock guitars and oddball bits of Moog, mellotron and stylistic detours abound. Cool stuff revived with reverence by Time-Lag Records!
