✨✧ VariousYou Can't Sit Down – Cameo/Parkway Dance Crazes 1958 to 1964 (180 gram yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Cameo/Abkco, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A great set of groovers from the Cameo/Parkway label – a company that gave the world the biggest twist record of the 60s, but which also was perfectly poised to deliver all sorts of other upbeat tracks as well! The label was in Philly – a huge dance town in the early days of soul and rock – and the set list here is filled with the kind of cuts that were Philadelphia's answer to the rising sound of Motown – the roots of the Northern Soul sound that would be followed by soul collectors for decades! These aren't novelty hits, but upbeat cuts that groove plenty – most by soul artists, a few by pop singers – but all given the kind of tight instrumentation and strong studio handling that made the Philly scene such a standout. 22 tracks in all – including "Shimmy Shimmy" and "The Wah Watusi" by The Orlons, "Bristol Stomp" and "You Can't Sit Down" by the Dovells, "Mashed Potato Time" and "Do The Bird" by Dee Dee Sharp, "The 81" by Candy & The Kisses, "The Mash" by Tony Young & The Hippies, "Mexican Hat Rock" by The Applejacks, "Baby Do The Frog" by The Dardenelles, "The Swim (part 1)" by The Marlins, "Slow Twistin" by Chubby Checker & Dee Dee Sharp, "The Third House" by Bobby Rydell, "When You Dance" by The Turbans, "Everybody South Street" by The Taffys, "The Popeye Waddle" by Don Covay, and yes, "The Twist" by Chubby Checker. Gang Of FourEntertainment! ... LP
Warner, 1979. Near Mint- ... $49.99
One of the greatest debut albums of all time – a record that hit the world like a comet when it was released, and which will continue to burn brightly for many decades to come! There's few groups who get things so right as Gang Of Four on this set – balancing the sharp edges of UK punk with a deeper political sense – but one that puts its message across in these short, sharp, shocks that are often given an extra punch by some surprisingly strong basslines! The mix of rawness, message, and surprising groove really sets this one apart from the pack – and that includes the work by legions of groups who've tried to imitate it over the years. Tracks include "Ether", "Natural's Not In It", "Not Great Men", "Damaged Goods", "Return The Gift", "Guns Before Butter", "Glass", and "Contract". LP, Vinyl record album
(Later US pressing with repeating shield logo labels. Cover is bumped at the top right corner and is bent a bit at the spine and top seam.)

Karl Hector & The MalcounsNon Ex Orbis ... LP
Now Again, 2019. New Copy ... $23.99 27.99
Some of the fullest, freakiest sounds we've ever heard from Karl Hector & The Malcouns – and a set that almost has the contemporary combo resonating with some of the older psych and fuzz that often gets reissued on the Now Again label! JJ Whitefield – of Whitefield Brothers/Poets Of Rhythm fame – is at the helm of the group, and also handles the production – and the whole thing is a deep shift from the sharper, funkier style of his early material – as this record's really awash in fuzz and long, languorous space – drawing elements from older funk, jazz, and global elements, and pushing them all through a mighty cool psych-styled filter. Marja Burchard sings some cool wordless vocals on the record, but most of the focus here is instrumental – with great organ, vibes, moog, and plenty of fuzzy guitar. Titles include "Crawling Through Your Mind", "Hymnins (extended)", "Inhale/Exhale", "Mother Seletta", "Dekagon", and "Asteroid". (Deep Funk, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ A TrainA Train ... LP
Southern Star, 1979. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A real enigma from the late 70s southern scene in the US – a surprisingly soulful set cut by a group who should have been a rock or country combo, but who come off here with a really deep sound – a groove that feels a lot more like some of the work from the Bay Area on Fantasy Records, or some of the groovier groups out of Austin! Vocals have a definite blue-eyed soul feel – and the instrumentation is sharp and jazzy – played at a level that's really professional for such a small label release, with production to match – yet all with a sound that's never commercial at all, and which really keeps a spontaneous, organic, and personal feel to the music. Titles include "I Don't Want To Lose You", "When Did You Lose Your Love For Me", "Puerto Rican Hotel", "When I Call Your Name", "Trip On Your Lip", and "Time Stops". ✨✧ Penny ArkadeNot The Freeze (2LP purple & green vinyl pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Sundazed, Late 60s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A really incredible batch of work from a very unique group – a Cali sunshine pop combo, but one who could let loose with some headier psych touches as well – which they definitely do on the mindblowing title track of the record! Mike Nesmith produced the set, but the work is much deeper than any of his Monkees music – and very different than the country rock he'd soon be giving the world – as the group mix sharp guitars with some sunnier vocals, but often have this undercurrent of darkness – in a way that's inexplicable, but extremely powerful too! This edition brings in additional material discovered after the previous reissue – and the whole thing has been cleaned up and repackaged wonderfully – with titles that include "Not The Freeze", "Century Of Distance", "Love Rain", "Voodoo Spell", "Color Fantasy", "Swim", "Thesis", and "Lights Of Dawn". Thiago NassifMente ... LP
Gearbox (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $16.99 24.99 About April 15, 2024 (delayed)
A sharp blend of edgey guitar, offbeat vocals, and lots of other electronic elements – but still served up with plenty of warmth, thanks to the unique approach of Thiago Nassif! Nassif works here with contributions from Vinicius Cantuaria and Arto Lindsay – and in a way, his music is in a similar territory to both of those artists – but as unique as any of their recordings over the years too! Nassif clearly understands the deeper corners of Brazilian music, and has an ear for more experimental modes – but also finds a way to make music with a very personal statement, as he weaves together electric drums with real percussion, guitar loops and keyboards, and even some "Venom synth" of his own. Titles include "Pele De Leopardo", "Voz Unica Foto Sem Calcinha", "Plastico", "Trepa Trepa", "Feral Fox", and "Transparente". (Brazil, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

WitchMovin' On ... LP
Teal/Sharp Flat (Netherlands), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
An unusual later album from Witch – one that has a sweet funky style at the core – a mode that shows the group picking up a fair bit of disco and club from the American scene, and fusing it with their older Zamrock styles to create a really unique sound overall! At times, the record echoes some of the Euro disco records of the late 70s – but there's also a deeper current to the record too, especially on some of the more personal tunes. Keyboards take over more than guitar at times – and although the group's name originally meant "We Intend To Create Havoc", this record might have changed the meaning to "We Intend To Create Happiness". Titles include "To Be Felt", "Movin On", "I'm Coming Back", "Let's Get Together", "It Feels So Good", and "My Desire". (Global Grooves, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Penza PenzaElectricolorized ... LP
Funk Night, 2023. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There's plenty of electric colors here – a great blend of the many elements from this large European funk ensemble, all filtered down into a mighty nice groove from Misha Panfilov! Penza Penza are one of Misha's most lively projects – and the group have this energy that draws on classic American instrumental soul from the 60s and 70s, but trips things out nicely in that style that Panfilov does so well with other acts – a slight dose of psychedelic colorings around the edges, but never in a way that obscures the sharp instrumentation at the core! Titles include "The World Of High Voltage Badgers", "Der Himmel Uber Kakumae", "Color My Coffee", "Deep Dive", and "Electricolor". (Deep Funk, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ TurtlesTurtle Soup ... LP
White Whale, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the crowning achievements of The Turtles – a set that features all original material by members of the group, and stellar production by Ray Davies of The Kinks! The set's the only full length that Davies ever handled – and it's obvious the group really rose to the occasion for the honor – hitting territory that's nicely sophisticated, yet which still has the sharpness of their earlier material too – a bit like the territory that Ray was hitting at the time with his own music. The songs are both a lot more personal, and have some deeper currents too – as The Turtles, like so many other west coast pop acts, were really maturing at the end of the 60s. Titles include "She Always Leaves Me Laughing", "Somewhere Friday Night", "Dance This Dance", "You Don't Have To Walk In The Rain", "Bachelor Mother", "Love In The City", and "House On The Hill". LP, Vinyl record album
("Target" label pressing in the textured cover. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a few tiny drip stains, but looks great overall.)

✨✧ William LyallSolo Casting ... LP
EMI (UK), 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The only solo album ever from William Lyall – an artist with ties to 70s UK pop giants Pilot and The Bay City Rollers – although don't hold that latter reference against him, as the music here is much like his work in Pilot! As with that group, the songs here are wonderfully sharp and compressed – well-crafted UK pop with that cool sense of production that could make a tune like "Magic" crackle and spark at a level that's different than so many US hits of the time – a quality that's even better when you start to listen to William's great work on keyboards too. Phil Collins played drums on a number of tracks, Paul Buckmaster delivers some great orchestrations at points – and titles include "Playing In The Sand", "Us", "Reasons", "Maniac", "The Deeper You Get", "Sleep", "Don't Be Silly", and "Supertrader". ✨✧ TarkusTarkus ... LP
Mag/Munster (Spain), Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A definite heavy jammer from the Peruvian scene of the early 70s – proof that while some of the late 60s crowd was headed towards soft rock modes, the rest were coming up with an even sharper edge and heavier barrage of guitars! There's a real sense of darkness to the record that matches the group's name and cover – a sound that's nicely allied with Deep Purple or Black Sabbath at their early best, but which also has its own uniquely spooky overtones. Titles include "Tempestad", "Cambiemos Ya", "Martha Ya Esta", "Rio Tonto", "Tema Para Lilus", "Tranquila Reflexion", and "Teimpo En El Sol". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ghost Funk OrchestraOde To Escapism (with download) ... LP
Karma Chief/Colemine, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
This one-man orchestra just keeps on getting better and better with each new record – working with the funk you'd expect from the name, but also all these cool and moody touches that mix together David Axelrod-like ambition with some of the sharper snap of hip hop production! This time around, Seth Applebaum has a fair bit of strings and horns in the mix – plus added voices, some strong lead singers – and an array of sonic touches that make for a richness that's much deeper than it is ghostly! Previous records were good, but Seth's really onto something great hear – and mixes together strands of sounds into something that's much richer than its parts – emerging as a surprising maestro for the underground, on titles that include "Stoop Talk", "Mourning", "Drop Me A Line", "Little Bird", "Fuzzy Logic", "Quiet Soul", "Tojours", "Queen Bee", and "Cost Of Living". (Deep Funk, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album
