✨✧ Tom WaitsHeartattack & Vine ... CD
Elektra, 1980. Used ... Out Of Stock
Tom Waits' final album for Asylum – and one that clearly points the way towards the rawly rhythmic, murky atmospherics of his wilder Island years to come – while still bringing out the woozy, gruff balladeer of the earlier albums! It's kind of amazing that the record works as well as it does, as you can sense the creative restlessness in the distinctly different styles. A great one! Includes "Heart Attack And Vine", "In Shades", "Saving All My Love For You", "Jersey Girl", "Downtown", "Mr. Diegal", "On The Nickel", "Ruby's Arm" and more. CD

CanSoon Over Babaluma (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Spoon/P-Vine (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $14.99 24.99
A mid 70s set from Can that's still very much in the best spirit of their earliest work – mostly longish tracks and all quite hypnotic – wonderful stuff from the team of Irmin Schmidt, Jacki Liebezeit, Holger Czukay, and Michael Karoli. Sure, Damo's not on vocals any more, but the instrumentation's still pretty darn great – and Can is also working more explicitly established global genre elements, but still really sounds like no one other than Can. Traces of reggae mix alongside many other rhythmic elements, jagged experimentalist touches, 70s ambient energy, and imaginative jams galore from one of the most creative combos of its time! Titles include "Chain Reaction", "Quantum Physics", "Dizzy Dizzy", and "Splash". CD

✨✧ Contortions/James White & The BlacksBuy (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ze/P-Vine (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A punky funky no wave classic from James White – working here under the name of The Contortions, in a manner that's very similar to his Off White album! The tunes dip, turn, and kind of groove with a mad sort of art school energy – shifting easily between fast and frenetic playing, and some more "out" jazz styled riffing – that crazy saxophone work that always made James White sound so amazing! Most tracks have raw vocals, and titles include "Bedroom Athlete", "Twice Removed", "Roving Eye", "Anesthetic", "Contort Yourself", and "I Don't Want To Be Happy". The CD version includes 3 bonus tracks – live versions of "Throw Me Away", "Twice Removed" and "Jailhouse Rock". CD

Ned DohenyLife After Romance (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Polystar/P-Vine (Japan), 1988. New Copy ... $14.99 24.99
A rare Japanese-only album from this 70s AOR legend – a set issued after Ned Doheny's big album for Columbia Records, but a set that feels as if it came just a few years after! During a generation where most folks were relying on streamlined production and instrumentation, Doheny still crafts things here with a really warm feel that works beautifully with his well-penned tunes, and his special approach to blue-eyed soul – easygoing Cali-style at its best, served up on a set of all-original material! Titles include "Love's A Heartache", "Back To The World", "Til Kingdom Come", "Follow Your Heart", "Whatcha Gonna Do For Me", "Heartbreak In The Making", and "Life After Romance". CD features five bonus tracks – including acoustic versions of "Get It Up For Love", "If You Should Fall", "Postcards From Hollywood", and "Whatcha Gonna Do For Me" – plus "Whatcha Gonna Do For Me (TV mix)". Steve EatonSteve Eaton ... LP
Mountain Bluebird/P-Vine (Japan), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 39.99
Warmly mellow work from Steve Eaton – a singer with a nicely laidback take on blue-eyed soul, served up in some lean arrangements with a nice jazzy vibe – all a nice change from some of the bigger, more commercial work of the period! The indie approach of the set gives the whole thing the feel of a record from a half decade before – as Steve unabashedly puts himself forward vocally, while also handling both acoustic and electric guitar, keyboards, piano, and more – with support from some equally easygoing session musicians too! Titles include the wonderfully groovy "Without Out" and "All In Love Say I" – plus "Got Me Moanin", "Rakin Leaves In The Wind", "Hurricanes & Tornadoes", "You're Not A Hero", "Friendly Stealer", and "Old Smart Big & Kind". Four-UmJust Us ... LP
Libra 7/P-Vine (Japan), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 39.99
A cool quartet with some very groovy vocals – a combo who seem to take some great inspiration from Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 – as well as other hip vocal groups of the 60s! The lineup features one gal and three guys – often with the gal singer in the lead, supported by warm harmonies from the male singers – all grooving to their own instrumentation, played on organ, guitar, and drums! This lean approach is mighty nice – and has the group soaring through a cool mix of soul and pop material that's all pretty upbeat and lively – given a few 70s touches on the keyboards at times, and coming across with a spontaneous feel that almost makes you feel like you're catching the combo in a club. Titles include "Dream A Dream A Day", "Scarborough Fair", "Summertime", "I Thank You", "More Today Than Yesterday", "What The World Needs Now", "Let's Make It One World", and "Day Dreaming". GritGrit ... LP
Sommor/P-Vine (Japan), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 39.99
A record that definitely lives up to its title – as Grit initially only circulated as a rare one-sided acetate, which had a mighty gritty sound – before recently getting cleaned up, expanded, and finally unleashed to the world as a great lost hard rock monster! The group really balance frenzied energy with some more thoughtful moments, but always seem ready to go balls-out with these monstrous guitar riffs that really deserve the wider audience it's taken so many decades to discover! There's more tracks on the reissue than the original test pressing – and titles include "Mineshaft", "The Child & The Drifter", "What Do You See In My Eyes/I Wish I Was", "1000 Miles", and "Down In The Mine". ✨✧ Kaworu KoyanagiEncyclopedia Of Krautrock ... Book
P-Vine (Japan), 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A Japanese book about Krautrock, but one that's laid out like a discography – so that you can understand it even if you can't read the language! All the artist and album information is in English (or German) – and every entry has a vivid full color photo, so that you can hundreds and hundreds of records that have gone onto make up the Krautrock genre as it's evolved over the years – following the music through key years of the 70s, and its evolution on the German scene as the 80s moved on – with slight side-trips into post-punk and industrial too. Chapters focus on artists or scenes – including Can, Kraftwerk, Neu, Hamburg, Faust, Die Krupps, Munchen, Embryo, Der Plan, Pyrolator, and lots more – dozens of other chapters that really lay out a wonderfully vivid picture of the music. The book is over 300 pages, with images of hundreds of records throughout! (Books, Rock) Book

✨✧ Jun MiyakeWhispered Garden ... LP
P-Vine (Japan), 2022. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Many years back, Jun Miyake went from working in familiar jazz modes to creating a genre that's all his own – music that has a very special vibe, and a sense of subtle beauty that's very much in keeping with the title of the album! It's always hard to describe Jun's music in words – as at some level, it's an extension of some of the more minimal experiments on the Japanese scene of the 80s – those cool combinations of sound that came after the initial work of Ryuichi Sakamoto and his contemporaries. But at another level, Miyake's music is sometimes more song-based, and tuneful – yet never across the entire space of a record at once. Words won't get us too far in trying to convey the quality of the music, but maybe the phrase "whispered garden" is a start – an introduction to titles that include "Farois Distantes", "Paradica", "The Jamestown Bridge", "Counterflect", "Progeny", "Parece Ate Carnaval", "Time Song Time", "Hollow Bones", and "Untrodden Sphere". ✨✧ Yoko NagisaYoko Elegance ... LP
Tokuma/P-Vine (Japan), 2002. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great little record from Japanese singer Yoko Nagisa – an artist who's clearly got a 70s look on the cover, and who really brings that to the record too – mixing in bits of jazz and bits of soul, at a level that maybe makes the whole thing feel like some blend between vintage work by Kimiko Kasai and some of the more mainstream singers of that older decade – set to perfect period instrumentation that's handled by Crazy Ken Band! Instrumentation has a sense of warmth that really matches Yoko's vocals nicely – and although lyrics are in Japanese throughout, as are the song titles – there's a really universal sense of appeal to the record. ✨✧ PiranhaHeaded In The Right Direction ... LP
Amazon South/P-Vine (Japan), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Bassy funk from the early 80s southern scene – the only album we've ever seen from Piranha, and a gem of a tight little set! The groove here is roughly in the mode of some of the better-known northern club groups in the post-disco years – crafted with lots of boogie bass on the bottom and tight rhythms throughout the set. But there's also a style that's a bit more in the ensemble funk mode here too – one that still keeps most of the instrumentation acoustic, and which has a bit less keyboards and electric percussion than other boogie-era work. Titles include "Funk-a-sol", "One Sided Love", "Let's Get It Back Together", "Good Time Lady", "Headed In The Right Direction", and "Let Your Feelings Show". (Soul, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Placebo (Marc Moulin)Ball Of Eyes (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
EMI/P-Vine (Japan), 1971. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 24.99
A very cool little album from Placebo – arguably the group's most soulful session ever, and one that draws heavily from American funky jazz at the start of the 70s! The grooves are nice and tight, and keyboards are focused on the most soulful sort of riffs – not nearly as tripped out as in later years, and really doing a great job of sending home the funky rhythms – almost in a way that's sort of early CTI at the best points! Marc Moulin's genius is already firmly in place – and he handles all arrangements, plus plays Fender Rhodes, electric harpsichord, and even what sounds like a bit of moog! Titles include "Humpty Dumpty", "Aria", "Showbiz Suite", "Ball Of Eyes", "You Got Me Hummin", and "Inner City Blues". (Jazz, Rock) CD

Placebo (Marc Moulin)Placebo (1973) (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
EMI/P-Vine (Japan), 1973. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 28.99
Seminal sounds from Placebo – one of the hippest electric groups going on the European scene of the early 70s, thanks to some great keyboards and electronics from the legendary Marc Moulin! Placebo's sound here is a unique approach to funky jazz – one that certainly draws from the electric modes of the American scene, and without any of the jamming elements of other Euro fusion groups – but there's also a touch of rockish inflection at points too – especially in the way the rhythms have a tightly pulsating groove. There's none of the indulgence of prog, but there's definitely a lineage going on somewhere in the mix too – and in addition to Moulin's keyboards, the group also features great horns from Nick Fissette, Alex Socrier, and Richard Rousselet. Titles include "Bolkwush", "Temse", "Balek", "Phalene", "Re-Union", and "Only Nineteen". (Jazz, Rock) CD

EMI/P-Vine (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The second amazing album from Placebo – a wicked mix of funky fusion styles, and a real standout on the European scene of the early 70s! The group's the brainchild of Marc Moulin – who wrote all tracks, and plays a wealth of great keyboards, in ways that almost make him the European equivalent of Herbie Hancock – especially in the way he can spaciously explore a groove! But there's other great elements to the music too – some tight funky rhythms, great horn parts, and some wicked guitar from fusion legend Philip Catherine – whose snakey lines bring a quality to the record that was in place on Placebo's first outing. Titles include "NW", "Plotseling", "Hop Hop", "Tanga", "Stomp", and "Dag Madam Merci". (Jazz, Rock) CD

✨✧ Yoshiko SaiTakla Makan ... LP
P-Vine (Japan), 2008. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful later work from Japanese singer Yoshiko Sai – tracks that are every bit as sublime as her classics! Sai has this vocal range that's incredible – an ability to slide up and down the scale that's somewhere in the territory of Minnie Riperton or Kate Bush – even though the music here is nothing like theirs at all, as the instrumentation mixes fuller, soaring charts with some occasional stronger guitar lines – all set to superb lead vocals from Yoshiko, always at a level that's much more experimental than commercial. Lyrics are in Japanese throughout – as are the titles – but there's a very universal appeal to the record! (Japanese, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Ernie StoryMeditation Blue ... LP
Legend/P-Vine (Japan), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 36.99
A really unusual set from the Twin Cities scene in the 70s – an obscure album from singer Ernie Story – who comes across with a lot of blue-eyed soul in his vocals, and works in this blend of dark-tinged acoustic elements and funk – maybe somewhere in the territory of more famous work by artists like Bill Withers or Rodriguez! At times, Story's music definitely has the moodier currents of the latter – an element that maybe kept him from getting wider circulation – but his vocals are fantastic, and there's this nice use of drumbeats that really punctuate the music with this slow-stepping vibe that really works with the vocals. Other instrumentation is nice and spare – which furthers the vibe of the record – and titles include "Tribute To Lady Jane", "Disco City", "Chain Gang", "Sinners Lament", "Lost Without You", and "Dreamers Holiday". Van Dyke Parks' masterpiece – and one of the hippest records to come out of LA in the 60s! The album's a strangely anachronistic one – steeped in the kind of past-days scoring found on early records by Harpers Bizarre and Randy Newman (both of which Parks had a hand in!), wrapped around simply poetic songs about the scene and state of affairs in late 60s LA, all handled with a cinematic approach that's aging Hollywood at its best! Titles include Randy Newman's "Vine Street" – plus "By The People", "Laurel Canyon Blvd", "Donovan's Colours", and "The All Golden". Includes the bonus track "The Eagle And Me". CD

Never-heard work from the legendary Rodion GA – an artist who barely issued any material during the 20th century, but who's become a real electronic music legend in more recent years! Rodion hails from Hugary, where he worked underground recording all these cool cuts from the 80s onward – material that's a blend between cold wave grooves and more synth-based sound library material – usually instrumental, and with some dark currents on most tracks that really make for some striking sounds throughout! All the cuts here are from Rodion's archive, and even the later ones have an analog vibe that feels like lost cassette culture electronic nuggets from the early 80s – brought forth here with great treatment and detailed notes from Ace Records! Tom WaitsBlood Money ... CD
Anti, 2002. Used ... $3.99
An unusual moment in the career of Tom Waits – a set that features some tracks done for a stage production, and which almost seem to unlock a Brechtian side in the singer's approach – especially given the jagged rhythms and dark currents that seem to inflect to many of the tunes! At a number of points, Waits sings in a style that's even more gruff than some of his standard albums – and mixed with the instrumentation on the set, there's almost a between the wars sort of vibe to the whole thing – a very nice change from the vibe of so many previous albums. At some level, the set might also mark an elevation to some of the more "serious" modes that Nick Cave was also hitting around the same time – a onetime underground hero realizing the power of himself in the larger world of art and culture. Titles include "Everything Goes To Hell", "Another Man's Vine", "Knife Cause", "The Part You Throw Away", "A Good Man Is Hard To Find", "Starving In The Belly Of A Whale", and "Misery Is The River Of The World".
