Specials, Selecter, Madness, English Beat, etcDance Craze ... LP
2 Tone/Chrysalis, 1981. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A big moment for the British ska scene – and the soundtrack to a film that featured live work by nearly all of the big names at the time! The album features live work by artists who owed a lot to 2 Tone, but who'd even moved onto bigger fame by the film – but who are working here in a nice back-to-basics mode – and titles include live versions of "Concrete Jungle", "Man At C&A", and "Nite Klub" by The Specials; "Mirror In The Bathroom", "Big Shot", and "Ranking Full Stop" by The English Beat; "Inner London Violence" and "Lip Up Fatty" by Bad Manners; "Easy Life" by The Bodysnatchers; and "Razor Blade Alley" and "One Step Beyond" by Madness. LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Cover has a promo stamp. A nice copy.)

ClashSandinista! ... LP
Epic, 1980. Near Mint- 3LP ... $69.99
The longest album ever from The Clash – a stunning triple LP set that really shows the group bristling with new ideas and energy throughout! There's a hell of a lot going on here – some cuts that are every bit as strong as the previous records, others that offer a few mis-steps but in a wonderfully playful way – and a few more that really hit this sort of unique mix of genres and politics that could only be summed up as Clash-like at its best! Bits of hip hop, reggae, new wave, funk, and more mix together beautifully – and the album's got a hell of a lot of charm and character, even if you're skipping past a few of the cuts you don't like as much as the others. 36 tracks in all – and titles include "The Magnificent Seven", "Hitsville UK", "Junco Partner", "The Leader", "Police On My Back", "Midnight Log", "The Call Up", "Washington Bullets", "Broadway", "Rebel Waltz", "Look Here", "The Crooked Beat", "Somebody Got Murdered", "Lose This Skin", "Charlie Don't Surf", "Kingston Advice", "Corner Soul", "Let's Go Crazy", "The Sound Of Sinners", "Living In Fame", "Silicone On Sapphire", and "Career Opportunities". Jackie De ShannonIn The Wind ... LP
Imperial, 1965. Near Mint- ... $13.99
One of the folksiest albums we've ever heard from Jackie DeShannon – a record that's heavy on acoustic guitar and folk-styled numbers, but which also features some top-shelf LA arrangements from the great Jack Nitzsche! Jackie takes on a number of folk hits of the day, but delivers them with a surprisingly strong approach – still a bit pop, but with an expressive quality in her vocals that may well beat most of the other pop folkies of the time. Titles include "Walkin Down The Line", "Don't Think Twice It's Alright", "Baby Let Me Follow", and "Jailer Bring Me Water" – but the set also includes "Needles & Pins", which is one of Jackie's most soulful tunes ever! LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing. Cover has some ringwear, heavy wear at the top left corner, and some spotty aging and small marks in pen in back.)

Charly issue of material by "the first rock supergroup" – The Steampacket, a large group that included Brian Auger, Long John Baldry, Rod Stewart, Julie Driscoll, Vic Briggs, and Mick Waller. The sound is beat group heavy – an extension of the Auger/Driscoll groove – and titles include "Baby Baby", "Holy Smoke", "The In Crowd", and "Back At The Chicken Shack". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ JamIn The City ... LP
Polydor, 1977. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
The classic opening salvo from The Jam! In The City finds the band in prime form right out of the, already blending their love of 60s beat and R&B with fast, infectious energy of first wave punk rock. They stood out from the pack tremendously back in the day, and that uniqueness kept the best of their records from ever aging a day – it's as incredible as ever! Includes "In The City", "I've Changed My Address", "Slow Down", "I Got In Time", "Away From The Numbers", their mod punk riff on Neal Hefti's "Batman Theme", "In The City", "Sounds From The Street", "Non-Stop Dancing", "Time For Truth" and more. ✨✧ Shadows Of KnightBack Door Men ... LP
Dunwich, 1966. Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fuzzy, freaked-out classic from one of the coolest groups to work on the Chicago scene of the 60s – the mighty Shadows Of Knight, easily one of the best garage acts of their time! The album's got a raw power that's undeniable – a gritty sound that almost beats the Boston, Texas, and Sunset Strip scenes at their own game – as sharp guitars, weird Hammond, and plenty of feedback come together to blow away the listener right from the start – all with a sound that's a lot more heady than the group's better-known "Gloria" hit, with a far-reaching vibe that makes us wish these guys had kept on recording a few more years longer – because they might have given some of the best European psych acts a real run for their money! Titles include "Bad Little Woman", "The Behemoth", "Three For Love", "Peepin & Hidin", "Gospel Zone", "High Blood Pressure", and "Tomorrow's Going To Be Another Day". LP, Vinyl record album
(Pink label stereo pressing. Cover has staining & waviness on the bottom half. Vinyl has a mark that clicks throughout "Bad Little Woman" and "Gospel Zone".)

✨✧ Beatles with Tony SheridanIn The Beginning ... LP
Polydor, Early 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Raw early Beatles – recorded in Hamburg at the beginning of the 60s when they were backing up singer Tony Sheridan – surprisingly well-preserved recordings, assuming that no one knew that this little backing band was going to take over the entire pop music world in a few years! We actually really dig the stripped-down, fairly rudimentary, though nicely rollicking Beatles instrumentation here – with charismatic vocals by Sheridan as well as some nice early Beatles compositions and vocals. The original release of this material may have been a post-breakout cash grab, but the music holds up really well and it's very much worthy! Includes "Ain't She Sweet", "Cry For A Shadow", "Let's Dance", "My Bonnie", "Sweet Georgia Brown", "Ruby Baby", "Why", "Nobody's Child", "Ya Ya" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Michel FugainMichel Fugain Et Le Big Bazar ... LP
CBS (France), 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
A really joyous groove from Michel Fugain and his Big Bazar group – a sound that's a bit hard to describe, but which really grabs us right away! There's definitely some groovy rhythms going on in the set – and the style is kind of an updated French pop mode from the late 60s – swinging in a way that absorbs plenty of influences from the outside scenes, particularly some Brazilian ones – but with a sound that's definitely French all the way through. Fugain's vocals are in the lead, often supported by a chorus – and the backings by Jean Bouchety have this really cool soundtrack feel at points – especially when the rhythms are upbeat and grooving. Titles include "Allez Bouge-Toi", "Attention Mesdames Et Messieurs", "Notre Societe", "Les Gens Irremplacables", "Leda Leda", and "L'Arche De Noe". (French, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing in a price code "B" cover.)

Grass RootsAlotta Mileage ... LP
Dunhill, 1973. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Back in the 60s, the Grass Roots already had this tight, compressed energy that was totally great – a quality that also makes their 70s work like this so wonderful too! There's a focus here that's totally great – horns informed by earlier soul music styles, and vocals that borrow a bit too – upbeat and bubbling, but with maybe a nicely mature vibe too – still hook-heavy, but slightly different than the earlier hits – on titles that include "Just A Little Tear", "Pick Up Your Feet", "Where There's Smoke There's Fire", "Ballad Of Billy Joe", "We Almost Made It Together", "Ain't No Way To Go Home", and "Claudia". LP, Vinyl record album
(Building block logo pressing in the textured cover, with a small cutout hole and bumped corner.)

✨✧ Hour GlassHour Glass – 1967 to 1969 (Hour Glass/Power Of Love) ... LP
United Artists, Late 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99
A pair of early records from Hour Glass – back to back in a single set! First up is the self titled Hour Glass album – fantastic early work from Gregg And Duane Allman – a set that's nothing at all like their Allman Brothers material, but which has a wonderful style nonetheless! At some level, there's a very strong soul current running through the music – as the group mix in songs by Curtis Mayfield, Deon Jackson, and others with some headier rock material – all set up in these arrangements by Dallas Smith that seem to begin in uptown soul, then push things into more psychedelic territory! The blend is great, and makes for a really wonderful record – on titles that include "I've Been Trying", "No Easy Way Down", "Out Of The Night", "Nothing But Tears", "Heartbeat", and "Silently". Power Of Love is an excellent second set from Hour Glass – the pre-Allman Brothers Band that featured both Duane and Gregg Allman, the latter of whom is really coming into his own on the record! Unlike the group's debut, this one features a lot more original material by Gregg – and guitars that start to crackle in that sweetly cresting style that would become the group's hallmark, and which would have an undeniable influence on the sound of rock in the 70s. At some level, the whole thing's an early southern effort to answer the sounds of the Bay Area scene – and comes off beautifully, thanks to titles that include "To Things Before", "I'm Not Afraid", "Home For The Summer", "Down In Texas", "Now Is The Time", and "Going Nowhere". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cut corner, light wear and aging, bumped corners, and a minor center split in the top seam.)

KnackGet The Knack ... LP
Capitol, 1979. Very Good+ ... $5.99
One of the greatest power pop albums ever recorded – a blistering batch of tight little rocking tunes that took pop music back to basics at the end of the 70s! The group have an almost Beatles-esque flair for the short catchy tune – but have also pumped up things nicely with a smoothly compressed 70s approach to production. There's an urgency to the work that seems to drive the whole thing with an uptight adolescent sense of horniness – a strange force that kicks most tunes into ultradrive by tapping into a virtually limitless source of energy! Titles include the mega-hit "My Sharona", plus "Heartbeat", "Lucinda", "Frustrated", "Good Girls Don't", "Selfish", "O Tara", and "Maybe Tonight". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has edge wear, center split on the spine, some surface wear.)

✨✧ Dave FrishbergOklahoma Toad ... LP
CTI, 1970. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sublime little set from the legendary Dave Frishberg – his first vocal effort ever, and quite different than most of his later work! At the time of the record, Frishberg was a songwriter who penned such underground hipster jazz vocalist classics as "I'm Hip" and "Peel Me A Grape" – and the set has a clever, laidback feel that's very much in the spirit of those two great tunes – Dave singing and playing electric piano, clavinet, and organ – with some great jazzy touches by a group that includes Al Cohn on tenor, Bill Berry on trumpet, and Garnett Brown on trombone. There's a nicely offbeat feel to the record – both the tunes and the vocals – that reminds us a lot of the work of Bob Dorough – and part of this may have to do with the fact that Dorough cronie Stuart Scharf played guitar on the album. But the real genius is up to Frishberg, who's clever without being cloying – witty without ever being full of himself – and incredibly charming in the way he delivers the lyrics with a simple, honest approach. Titles include "The Prophet Of Doom", "Oklahoma Toad", "One Horse Town", "Van Lingle Mungo", "The Secret Of Successd", "Wallflower Lonely Cornflower Blue", and "Nasty Nasty Habit". (Vocalists, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album
(Green label pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has very light wear near the bottom – but this is a great copy.)

✨✧ BeatlesBeatles – The White Album ... LP
Apple, 1968. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
The Beatles at their late best – on 1968's self-titled set – now immortalized as The White Album! The White Album capped offed a period of intense creativity for the band with a double that's as freewheeling as anything they'd ever release. It's got raw rockers with wry lyricism, tender acoustic balladry, psych blues jams and some flat out weird bits. As was always the case, John's and Paul's songs cover the majority of the sides, but The White Album also features what's arguably George's most vital moment as a Beatle with "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". Other tracks include "Back InThe USSR", "Dear Prudence","Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", "Happiness Is A Warm Gun", "Martha My Dear", "Rocky Raccoon", "Why Don't We Do It In The Road", "Julia", "Yer Blues", "Sexy Sadie", "Helter Skelter", "Revolution 1", Good Night" and more. ✨✧ English BeatI Just Can't Stop It ... LP
Sire, 1980. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The American debut of The English Beat – aka the UK group The Beat, who'd been making some big waves with import 45s on the 2Tone label, the burst forth on our US market with a slight shift in name, due to another group hogging their original moniker on our side of the Atlantic! That bit of backstory hardly need matter, though – as the group wear their English loud and proud here, setting off a huge ska revival as they blend Jamaican roots with London attitude in the post-punk years – stacking up a set of classics that continue to groove many turntables all these many years later. Titles include "Mirror In The Bathroom", "Hands Off She's Mine", "Twist & Crawl", "Big Shot", "Best Friend", and "Jackpot". LP, Vinyl record album

A landmark leaping-off point for The Beatles – and a record that really paved the way for countless new ideas to come! Danny CoxBirth Announcement ... LP
Together Records, 1969. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $6.99 11.99
Very weird bit of stoner rock with a slight soul edge, and kind of a rock version of the Isaac Hayes baroque approach to pop covers. Danny Cox performs a number of Dylan and Beatles tunes – like "Dear Prudence", "My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Baby Blue", "Hey Jude", "Just Like A Woman", and "Day In The Life" – all with small group backing on guitars and steel guitar, and kind of a "back to the country" rock approach. Not really a soul record, or really our bag, but an obscure oddity, and produced and arranged by Gary Usher. (Soul, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ CCSWhole Lotta Love (aka CCS) ... LP
RAK, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Proof that blues rock can be turned towards a useful end – and a landmark album from one of the greatest Brit groups of the post-beat era! CCS (Collective Consciousness Society) were more of a studio project than anything else – but their first few records sparkled with a groove and energy level that surpassed most other work going at the time – thanks to large backings from arranger Johnny Cameron, of Brit Easy and soundtrack fame – working here with UK bluesman Alexis Korner in a format that mixed big funky backings with Korner's down-home blues rock! The Cameron touches really help get away from any blues cliches of the genre – and the inclusion of jazz players like Harry Beckett, Henry Lowther, Kenny Wheeler, and Ray Warleigh makes for a really hip approach to instrumentation that goes way beyond simple studio support. Most tracks are instrumental, but the set does include some vocals – and the group scored a standout hit with the album's cover of "Whole Lotta Love", and followed up with other covers that include "Satisfaction", "Living In the Past", "Wade In The Water", and "Bom Bom". Also includes the original tracks "Waiting Song", "Dos Cantos", and "Lookin For Fun". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ B-52sWild Planet ... LP
Warner, 1980. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
They may look goofy on the cover, but the young B-52s are incredible here – working with this spare sense of power that almost makes us think that we didn't need most of what happened in rock and roll during the 70s – given the way these guys can distill a mood or moment down to just a few deft instrumental turns and offbeat lyrics! The record's not punk, but it's also not new wave either – at least in the conventional way – and there's a darkness here that goes way past any simple cliches you may have associated with the band – a haunting feel that transcends most of what they were ever capable of in later years. We might even say this one tops their debut – and titles include "Party Out Of Bounds", "Dirty Back Road", "Runnin Around", "Give Me Back My Man", "Private Idaho", "Devil In My Car", "Quiche Lorraine", "Strobe Light" and "53 Miles West Of Venus". ✨✧ Babe RuthAmar Caballero ... LP
Harvest, 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An album with a horse on the cover, and a sound that's maybe even more soulful than the first mighty outing by Babe Ruth – quite a lot, given the strength of that debut! Vocalist Jenny Haan seems to have an even greater presence here – working some nice currents of color through the group's great ability to riff, groove, and sometimes step into more acoustic modes – all while holding onto one of the hippest currents going in the Harvest Records scene – and one of the most unique as well! There's plenty of surprises throughout – and in addition to great cuts like "Broken Cloud", "Gimme Some Leg", "We Are Holding On", "Amar Caballo", and "Doctor Love" – the group also turn in a nicely offbeat remake of "Cool Jerk" too!
