✨✧ BandMusic From Big Pink ... LP
Capitol, 1968. Very Good Gatefold ... $13.99
The landmark first album from The Band – and along with the follow-up, it's among the greatest records of its time – which is all the more astounding given how independent of late 60s trends it is! Each member of The Band brings such inimitable textures – Garth Hudson's imposing organ grooves, Richard Manuel's aching tenor vocals, Rick Danko's voice and distinctive bass lines, Levon Helm's behind-the-beat drumming and the country wisdom of his voice, Robertson's guitar mastery – this really was THE Band. Includes "Tears Of Rage", "In A Station", "The Weight", "Long Black Veil", "Chest Fever", "Lonesome Suzie", "This Wheels On Fire", "I Shall Be Released" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Beaver & KrauseNonesuch Guide To Electronic Music ... LP
Nonesuch, 1968. Near Mint- 2LPs + Book ... $24.99
One of the most electronic albums that Beaver & Krause ever recorded – a set that was issued as a Guide To Electronic Music, but which has a way more to offer than just a simple demonstration record! Unlike most other B&K albums, which can feature a bit of rock mixing in with the moog, this one is almost entirely analogue electronics – often played in a stark, spare way that has plenty of spooky tones – but also works beautifully together in a mode that's similar to other experimental electronic sets from the time, such as Morton Subotnick's contemporaneous records for Nonesuch. The tracks are very short, with concentrated bursts of sound, and have titles like "White Sound", "Ribbon Controller", and "Sawtooth". Comes in a box with a very cool book that explains a lot of different properties of electronic music. Great for sample-heads or for junior knob twiddlers. 2 LPs strong! LP, Vinyl record album

BGM (Takayuki Shiraishi)Back Ground Music ... LP
Studio Mule (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... $31.99
A set that's hardly background at all – as the tracks here have a lively, forward sort of energy that reminds us of our favorite post-punk experiments from the British and German scenes at the start of the 70s – done with a darkness that really resonates with the album's cover image too! There's hardly any vocals at all on the songs – other than muted, abstracted lyrics that are buried under brooding basslines, echoey drums, and fuzzy work on guitar and keyboards – all with a moody Factory Records sort of vibe – and by that, we mean Factory circa 1980, not the later sunnier years. Titles include "Neo Dancer", "And", "Repeat", "Membership Card", "Romantic Romance", and "Recovery Room". LP, Vinyl record album

Bonniwell Music MachineBonniwell Music Machine (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warner/Real Gone, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... On March 6, 2020
An amazing second chapter for The Music Machine – working here with the last name of leader Sean Bonniwell in their name – in a groove that's even weirder and wilder than before! The group take on an odd new sound here – still the heady brew of fuzz and Hammond on their original garagey recordings from LA – but with a mode that also really lets Bonniwell's offbeat character come to the forefront – both in the odd lyrics, and his stark presentation in the lead – a Sunset Strip sense of personality that's almost up there with Kim Fowley at times! The record's definitely one of the weirder, more edgey sides cut for Warner Brothers in the mid 60s – and titles include "Astrologically Incompatible", "Double Yellow Line", "The Trap", "Soul Love", "Bottom Of The Soul", "Me Myself & I", and "The Eagle Never Hunts The Fly". Warner, 1975. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A pretty darn soulful album of tracks from Jorge Calderon – recorded in LA with help from a great batch of 70s studio players, and an excellent compressed pop sound! The record's not the stuff for weak of heart – but it's a great batch of tightly produced vocal tracks that will appeal to fans of 70s LA. Lots of nice ones – like "Kiss & Run", "At The Beehive", "All The Faces", and "Friends Again". LP, Vinyl record album

Tiger Bay (UK), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99
A really great UK group from that magical time when a few key combos were effortlessly blending together jazz, rock, and some more experimental modes – coming up with a really special sound that makes a record like this an overlooked classic that maybe sounds better today than it did when it was released! The group clearly have jazz chops, but also play heavy guitars with some bluesy influences – yet with a sense of chromatic changes that really keeps things interesting without ever losing their focus. The lovely Larraine sings on a few tracks, sometimes wordlessly – and titles include "Henry", "Open Spaces", "Mystical Sounds", "Clown", "Slow & Lonesome Blues", and a version of the Pharoah Sanders tune "Japan". William EatonMusic By William Eaton ... LP
Morning Trip (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... About March 1, 2020
Beautifully mellow sounds from William Eaton – a 70s hippie-esque figure who wandered the desert in Arizona, and had a great talent for building his own stringed instruments! Here, William's working on an assortment of self-created guitars – one with 6 strings, one with 12, and one with a whopping 26 strings – dubbed an "elesion harmoniom", and sounding a lot more like a harp than anything else! The style of these tunes is spare and often spacey – played with sounds of nature in mind, often in ways that flow out in the breeze, and come back with a slight little echo. The home made ("private press", if you will) nature of the original album is expanded nicely here with additional notes and photos – and the CD features a total of 18 tracks in all. Brian EnoDiscreet Music (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Obscure/Astralwerks, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! LP, Vinyl record album

Ron Geesin & Rogers WatersMusic From The Body ... LP
Harvest (UK), 1970. Near Mint- ... $33.99
An incredibly tripped-out record – of the sort we're stunned was ever recorded for a major! The work's a side project of Roger Waters from Pink Floyd, done in collaboration with Ron Geesin for a film directed by Roy Battersby – and it's a shifting landscape of short experimental tracks, easily drifting back and forth between off-kilter instrumental numbers to sing-songy vocal ones that are far madder than Syd Barrett's work ever was. There's some nice folksy touches that sit by the tripped-out guitar work – and overall, the album's relatively introspective, especially for the setting, with less of the guitar-churning sound than you'd expect from Floyd at this point! Titles include "Body Transport", "Embryonic Womb Walk", "Give Birth To A Smile", "Chain Of Life", "Dance Of The Red Corpuscles", "Our Song", and "Bridge Passage For Three Plastic Teeth". Incredible sounds from Japanese composer Yoshio Ojima – music created for the Spiral art center in Tokyo – one of the most beautiful buildings we've ever visited in the city! The spot is a special blend of art and commerce – and the music by Ojima shifts between the sorts of sounds you might hear in an installation, and work that's similar to some of the environmental music of his contemporaries – all delivered with spare electronics and a minimalist mode that really shows the fantastic direction some of these Japanese composers were taking after the initial Brian Eno experiments with ambient music, particularly Music For Airports. ✨✧ Roxy MusicCountry Life ... LP
EG, 1974. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
The fourth album from Roxy Music – and quite possibly the best to date! The album has the group moving strongly past the Eno years, into a tighter framework that still contains many of the darker themes of earlier records. Ferry's lead vocals are incredibly majestic – rising to heights to match the European greats of years past who were his inspiration – and the group's tight blend of reeds, guitar, and moody keyboards gives the whole album an off-kilter sense of instrumentation that really sets it apart from the pack. There's an artfulness here that's never overdone, and the whole thing comes together with a magic that's impossible to describe, but which is Roxy at their best. Bob Seger & The Last HeardHeavy Music – The Complete Cameo Recordings 1966/1967 ... LP
Cameo/Abkco, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $18.99 21.99
A fantastic early side of work from 70s superstar Bob Seger – and one that comes as quite a surprise, compared to his hits! This early material is really raw, gritty, and definitely shows Bob's roots in the same Detroit scene that was changing the worlds of both soul and rock in the late 60s – often with groups that had an equal emphasis on both sides of the spectrum! In fact, there's a surprisingly strong current of soul that runs through many of these cuts – a romping energy that really matches the freakier, fuzzier touches of the instrumentation – all with results that will have you maybe thinking about Bob in a whole new way. Some of the modes recall the best early Mitch Ryder material, but often with a trippier sort of vibe – and although the tracks came out as singles on the Cameo label in the mid 60s, this is the first full album ever issued of the material. Titles include "Sock It To Me Santa", "Heavy Music (parts 1 & 2)", "Chain Smokin", "Persecution Smith", "Vagrant Winter", "East Side Story", "Very Few", and "Florida Time". LP, Vinyl record album

Elektra, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $3.99
A surprising late folk entry in the Elektra Records catalog – recorded in the early 70s, and with some sublime production from the great Gary Usher! The sound is definitely contemporary folk, as promised in the title – but there's more of a singer/songwriter sensibility too – more mature songs than straighter folk, made even more so by Usher's production – and harmonies on some of the vocals that almost recall the post-folk world over at Atlantic. Steve Melshenker and Steve Cowan wrote the album, and do most of the vocals – and both play acoustic guitar too – alongside piano, flute, dobro, bass, and cello, which makes for a warm acoustic sound. Spacemen 3Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To (with download) ... LP
Superior Viaduct, 1986. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99
The title certainly gets it right – as Spacemen 3 were legally-registered heroin addicts in the UK at the time of this recording – very unusual in the years before heroin chic of the 90s! The set came out after the group's first few landmark records, but actually features earlier demo material recorded in 1986 – really wonderful sounds that are a great change from the tighter direction the group were taking as the 90s moved on – as these sides still have them very much awash in fuzz, and probably pretty fuzzed-out themselves! Sonic Boom provides loads of wonderfully trippy guitar feedback, and the group's a quartet here – with guitar, bass, and percussion – on titles that include "Come Down Easy", "That's Just Fine", "Mary Anne", "Sound Of Confusion", "A-Men", and "Losing Touch With My Mind". Talking HeadsFear Of Music ... LP
Sire, 1979. Very Good ... $16.99
A really tremendous album from The Talking Heads – and a set that moves far past their already-great early records, to really show a rhythmic complexity we never would have expected! Brian Eno is helping the group in the studio again here, and the record really shows both David Byrne and Eno's late 70s fascination with global rhythms – elements that are often used in spare, simple little ways to really help inflect the tunes with a playful imagination that goes way beyond the colder post-punk and new wave of most of their contemporaries! The balance of previous aesthetics with these new grooves is wonderful – heard to great effect on the classic club cut "I Zimbra" – but brewing up strongly underneath on gems that include "Mind", "Paper", "Cities", "Life During Wartime", "Memories Can't Wait", "Air", "Heaven", "Animals", "Electric Guitar", and "Drugs". Shakespeare never sounded so compelling before – given a very cool soundtrack by the Third Ear Band, who were moved to work on this project in collaboration with director Roman Polanski! The music is fantastic away from the film – very different than some of the group's earlier records, and a lot more eerie too – as some of their usual string and reed elements almost take on an electronic vibe in the process! Most tracks are very spacious and open, with the violin and oboe crafting some especially sharp, angular sounds – almost as if the group were let loose in some sort of analogue electronic studio. Titles include "The Beach", "The Banquet", "Dagger & Death", "Bear Baiting", "Groom's Dance", "Prophetics", and "Wicca Way". LP, Vinyl record album

TullySea Of Joy – Music From The Film By Paul Witzig ... LP
Harvest (Australia), 1970. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Deeply introspective music penned for a 1970 Australian surf film – tracks that have a grounding in instrumental rock, but which also show plenty of trance-like and meditative modes as well! The titles are relatively short, but spin out with an open-ended quality that's almost like that of much longer instrumental jams – built up out of a spare and shifting assemblage of elements that include organ, flute, clarinet, piano, gong, and guitar – plus a bit of softly-sung vocals on a few numbers. There's an almost folk-like fragility to some of the tunes, but others have a more spacious feel that fits their use in a second-generation surf film nicely. Titles include "Cat Clarinet Mit Orgel", "Follow Me", "Pseudo Tragic Dramatic", "Sea Of Joy", "Thank You", "Softly Softly", "Syndrome", and "Down To The Sea". Svart (Finland), 1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 2LP ... About September 1, 2019 (delayed)
Finland's been giving us some great funk and soul sounds in recent years, but that legacy stretches back much longer than we might have guessed – to a point that includes all these groovy disco and electronic dance tracks from the 80s! The set's a follow-up to the Satan In Love compilation, which charted similar territory – but this one moves more into a world that's influenced by some of the electro pop modes that were coming out of the UK in the early 80s, with maybe a touch of the European disco of the decade before – especially in the style of some of the female singers here, who could just as easily have been working with Munich Machine, or some of the other German and Italian groups. Lyrics are mostly in Finnish, but the keyboards, drum machines, and basslines are universal – on titles that include "Jossakin Jos Halaut" by Eini, "Jupiter" by Jori Sivonen, "Big & Beautiful" by Visual, "Night Is Like Magic" by Biba, "Hi Jacker" by Buffalo Soldier, "Sormus" by Clifters, "Grandmaster Klaus" by Mad Lindell, "Nuori Inka" by Jarmo Juhani, "Robotin USA" by Vaarallinen Mutanti, "Cold War On The Rocks" by Step On The Other Side, and "Tahdenlento" by Mika Sundqvist. Terry Riley's masterpiece, and an enduring classic that never grows old – and which never lapses into the hippy dippyness of some of his other work! The piece features 53 short musical passages, played in an order defined by the players, in minimal repetition, moving in and out of phase synchronicity – ever shifting, turning, and drifting – all to create a remarkable tapestry of sound, texture, and melody. Massively heavy sounds from A Bolha – a Brazilian group who were previously known as The Bubbles, and backed up Gal Costa during the Tropicalia years – but who work here in a fuzzy, bassy groove that's totally great – definitely an heir to the headier sounds of the UK scene at the start of the 70s! The guitars are definitely in full force here, but the basslines drive things along strongly too – echoing some of the Peruvian sounds of the time, but with a bit more Brazilian sophistication – and definitely a musical echo of lessons learned during Tropicalia, even though the set's a fully instrumental one. Organ also figures in the mix too – and titles include "Bye My Friend", "Razao De Existir", "Um Passo A Frente", "A Esfera", and "Neste Rock Forever". A long-overdue full length album from Ace Of Cups – a really unusual female group from the Bay Area scene of the late 60s – but one who never hit the heights of their bigger San Francisco contemporaries! The girls have this really great look on the back – kind of flower power, but with a bit more charm – a quality that comes through in the music, with is often more garagey than trippy – but which also has a way of putting forth female vocals and honest ideas that might not flourish this strongly for similar groups until the post-punk years. That approach makes the whole thing a truly timeless collection of tracks – of the sort that maybe resonate more strongly today than they did back in the 60s. Satoshi Ashikawa creates sounds in ways that resonate both with the ancient and contemporary, organic and urban, at a level that's very slow-building and striking in its careful use of sound and space – served up here on instrumentation that includes vibes from Midori Takada, piano from Tomoko Sono, and harp from Yuko Utsumi – always tuneful, but in ways that are more like a natural progression of sound than conventional music. Warner, 1969. Sealed Gatefold ... $3.99
Really great work by The Association – a back-to-basics effort that has the group handling most of the instrumentation themselves, in a way that often gives the set a surprisingly intimate feel! Sure, these are the guys who virtually invented candy-coated Sunshine Pop – but they're also a heck of a great group at the core, and move here into some of the looser, more relaxed modes of the Warner Brothers scene at the time – a setting that really helps them bring a hell of a lot of personality to the music. Harmony vocals still soar out beautifully when needed, and the arrangements and songwriting show a lot more signs of their association with the hip LA scene of the 60s – a maturation that really pushes their sound forward in a wonderful way. Wah Wah (Spain), 1976. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99
Sublime sounds from this legendary Spanish prog trio of the 70s – a record that's even more fully-formed than their excellent debut – and done with more sophisticated recording quality too! The album has a bit of vocals at some points – mostly wordless, but occasionally with lyrics – yet as before, the focus is on the blinding interplay between the musicians – guitarist Eduardo Niebla, drummer Joan Punyet, and keyboardist Benet Noguer – who plays organ, piano, melotron, and even a bit of moog! The group's also got a bassist this time around – which propels the songs even more strongly – on titles that include "Dia Perfecto", "Cucutila", and "Intencion" – plus a side-long reworking of "El Principo Del Fin" from the group's first album. Very long and extended jamming work from Ave Rock – a hip Argentine combo from the early 70s, and one that rivals the bigger progressive greats of the European scene at the time! Ave Rock are heavy on the keyboard and guitar lines here – really stretching out with a fluid, well-played approach that's sometimes spacey, but often much more jamming, and really focused on the technical details. Tompkins Square, 2013. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Mindbending work from guitarist Daniel Bachman – a player who may well be the John Fahey of the contemporary acoustic generation! Daniel works here mostly in a solo mode – with just a bit of banjo and fiddle at two points on the record – but his richly chromatic approach to the strings of the guitar unlock a whole world of color and sound – a mode that, at one level is rooted in older acoustic traditions – but at another is richly inventive, especially in the way that Bachman unlocks some metallic elements in the strings that bring a sharp edge to his music. Titles include "Jesus I'm A Sinner", "Variation On The Goose Chase", "Blenheim", "Leaving Istanbul 4am", and "Under The Shade Of The Trees". (Folk/Country, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Maybe not the first album from the legendary Band – but a record in which the group get everything completely right all the way through – and sparkle with that special sound that continues to influence generations of music makers, and music lovers! All the great elements the group were bringing to their work with Bob Dylan are in place here – but the focus is completely different, with this warm glow that really fits the vocals of Levon Helm, and a sense of unified vision that makes it really hard to even come up with a match for the energy of the group on this album. Pure brilliance from start to finish – especially the second side of the record, which has a continuous run of tunes that's very unique – and still completely sublime all these many years later! The album shows the fracturing ideas of the group, but crafted together with a unity you won't find on The White Album or Let It Be – still a way of making it all gel together beautifully, as the fab four stretch their wings to find new ways of being. Added instrumentation is used wonderfully – never overdone, but with orchestral passages that can really hammer home the best musical moments – and titles include "I Want You", "Because", "You Never Give Me Your Money", "Golden Slumbers", "The End", "Her Majesty", "Polythene Pam", and "Sun King". Great early work from Biting Tongues – a group who gave Factory Records a few great singles in the mid 80s, but who are heard here a few years before – on an album that was only issued on cassette at the time! We've always loved these guys – and they've got a way of mixing the punk/funk of A Certain Ratio with some of the moodier currents of the Manchester scene – touched also by lots of great lines on trumpet and tenor sax, the latter of which almost gives their music some Blurt-like qualities! Yet the rhythms also move more in the cold wave mode – which mixes with the horns and live percussion to create a very cool blend – on titles that include "Denture Beach", "Read This", "Unhook That Boy", "Forty Three", "Evening State", "Or With Eyes Closed", and "Reflector". Heavy drums and a good dose of soul – both of which make Black Pearl stand out a bit from many of their late 60s contemporaries! There's a definite bluesy undercurrent to the group's music, but the riffs are also pretty hard and fast too – almost a bit funky at times, and delivered with a starker sort of groove than the usual blues rock combo. The musicianship is super tight throughout – really at a superstar level, but without sounding slick or commercial – and the album alone is worth it for the sharp drums and guitar leads, but also sports some pretty great vocals too – with almost a garagey soul sort of feel. There's few better places to start if you're looking to leap into Blondie – and titles include the classic "I'm Always Touched By Your Presence Dear", plus "I'm On E", "Fan Mail", "Bermuda Triangle Blues", "Youth Nabbed As Sniper", "I Didn't Have The Nerve To Say No", "Cautious Lip", "Detroit 442", and "Love At The Pier". The set's got some added strings at points, and there's even some backup vocals from the duo of Valerie Simpson and Melba Moore. Amazing solo work from ex-Zombie Colin Blunstone – his first album after parting ways with his former group – and one of our favorite albums of all time! Blunstone's vocals were already amazing in The Zombies – especially near the end – but this set takes things even further, by blending his sublime lyrics with spare arrangements that often just feature simple string passages and warm piano parts – subtle accompaniment that leaves Colin strongly in the lead! The songs are wonderful – penned to recall the changes and issues of the year after the parting of the group – with plenty of help from old buddies Rod Argent and Chris White too. There's never been another record like this again, and there never will be – one of the true treasures of the greatest generation of music! Imperial, 1967. Near Mint- ... $16.99
The insane debut of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band – an amazing late 60s Brit ensemble who were almost to music what Monty Python were to TV! This first effort by the group is a mad array of sounds and styles that come together with a great sense of play and joy – a real delight in quick turns, witty phrases, and parodic re-castings of earlier modes – inspired by dada work of the early 20th century, but also handled with a lot more of a post-modern feel overall. Most tracks are short, and many echo earlier music styles, filtered through a slightly psyche filter – and titles include "Death Cab For Cutie", "In San Francisco", "Jollity Farm", "Equestrian Statue", "Cool Brittania", "I'm Bored", "Piggy Bank Love", "Big Shot", "Mickey's Son & Daughter", and "The Sound Of Music". David BowieMercury Demos (with art print & contact sheets) ... LP
Parlophone, 1969. New Copy ... $62.99 69.99
A completely cool little package – one that offers up the first-ever release of ten tracks that David Bowie recorded in his apartment to give as demos to Mercury Records – material done right before his "Space Oddity" fame, with help from John Hutch Hutchinson on guitar! The set comes as a replica of a large reel-to-reel tape box – complete with fabric on the edge and interior, along with other inserts inside – all of which make you feel like you're getting a special package right from the man himself – as some early statement of his genius from a time when he was far more obscure. The music is great – with Bowie and Hutch singing together in harmony, and trading vocals – almost a Bowie take on a Simon & Garfunkel mode, and surprisingly well-recorded for demo material. Some of the cuts here are very early takes on classics, a few more unusual originals, and even a few covers – titles that include "Life Is A Circus", "When I'm Five", "Love Song", "Lover To The Dawn", "I'm Not Quite", "Occasional Dream", "Janine", "Conversation Piece", "Ching A Ling", and an early take on "Space Oddity" – which has the track done with this duo vocal – Bowie as Major Tom, and Hutch as ground control! David BowieSpace Oddity (2019 mix) ... LP
Parlophone, 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99
An amazing departure for David Bowie – hardly the kind of record you would expect from his oboe-filled tunes of a few years before – and really the start of the groundbreaking, earthshaking, reinventionist era of his genius! There's a spacious, soaring quality to Space Oddity that's every bit the kind of magical music you might hope for in a set recorded at the close of the 60s – a shift into new modes, new sounds that seem to suck up all the best influences in rock from the previous few years, but fuse it into a new cosmic vision for the next decade. And while others might stumble on cliche with the weight of such a task, Bowie pulls it off brilliantly – mixing his fuzzier feelings with some of his more personal leanings – and showcasing a newly deep sense of songwriting here that's really amazing. Some tunes have the sensitivity of work on Hunky Dory, while others burn with the fire of Man Who Sold The World – all in a balance that never sounds schizophrenic at all. Liuto/Schema (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
Maybe the coolest and grooviest music we've heard from the obscure Braen's Machine sound library project from early 70s Italy – a record that's less tripped out than its predecessors, and instead has this great style that's heavy on bossa elements and funky jazz! The vibe's a bit like the best Italian soundtracks of the period – especially work by Morricone or Trovajoli – and the group still apparently features contributions from Alessandro Alessandroni, working with Piero Umiliani – which gives the whole thing a very strong soundtrack pedigree! Instrumentation includes some mighty nice keyboards – both Hammond and electric piano – and lots of great production on familiar instruments, which can give things like a snare drum a very odd crackle, or a flute this weirdly spacious sound. 99 Records/Superior Viaduct, Early 80s. Near Mint- 2LP ... $19.99
Seminal sounds from the New York scene at the start of the 80s – and one of the first important records to feature the music of Glenn Branca! This EP was an important part of the 99 Records catalog – and like that label's work by artists like ESG or Liquid Liquid, it's got a style that's completely hard to define – a genre-blending mix of influences and elements, presented with a sensibility that's at once arty, and down to earth! Branca works here in a smaller setting than on later recordings – playing guitar in a quintet that also features Anthony Coleman on keyboards – and working at a level that brings the best ideas of the minimalist compositional generation into play with smaller combo rockish instrumentation. "Lesson 1" is a track that's held us rapt for years – and it's backed by the equally great "Dissonance". This special reissue also features a bonus one-sided 12" single – with an early performance of "Bad Smells" – one of Branca's first multi-guitar compositions, performed by a group that includes Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, and Ned Sublette! Tim BuckleyLook At The Fool ... LP
DiscReet, 1973. Very Good ... $9.99
The last album that Tim Buckley ever gave the world – and a great leaping-off point for speculation about what he might have done, had he not left the planet too soon! Tim's actually beginning to explore a bit of funk in his music here – still using that amazing voice with all of its range from the early Elektra years – but often set to backings that feature heavy drums from Earl Palmer, tight bass from Chuck Rainey, and keyboards from Mike Melvoin – all cats who can be tight, but never slick – and whose groove is more than loose enough to let Buckley direct the whole proceedings. Given that Tim has an occasional raw rasp, and a very offbeat way with his lyrics, the mix of elements is actually not that far from the funk of Betty Davis on her first two albums – with a similar shrug towards any easy genre categorizations. Titles include "Freeway Blues", "Look At The Fool", "Tijuana Moon", "Mexicali Voodoo", "Down In The Street", "Wanda Lou", and "Bring It On Up". LP, Vinyl record album

The process of the record mimics some of Byrd's famous work in New York – and has a very collaborative feel overall, with elements of electronics, acoustics, and vocals coming together beautifully! There's some great tabla, harpsichord, moog, and organ on the record – plus more serious woodwinds and brass – and vocals from Victoria Bond, Susan De Lange, Christie Thompson, and Ernie Anderson – plus Joe himself. As the notes say, "this album is a series of aural and spatial fantasies evoking the spirit of American patriotic music" – and the whole thing's recorded on electronic keyboards. Given that this one's on Takoma, you can guess the kind of hippy-dippy folksist influence it might have, which gives the electronic music tracks an even weirder edge. Harvest (Germany), 1979. Near Mint- ... $16.99
Sweet late 70s work from Can – working here at a level that's a cool compression of the group's earlier ideals, but with a style that's very true to their roots! Drums are still by Jaki Liebezeit, who has this great way of being loose and stiff at the same time – a bit of a flow that seems to reflect changes in jazzy funk during the 70s, but still with more of that forward-moving energy of Krautrock – which is furthered by the long keyboard lines spun out by Irmin Schmidt! Some of the guitar parts get a bit more focused on stronger lead elements, but never in a way that's overindulgent – and likewise, the vocals can stand out at points, but never dominate the overall mix of music. The group handle production this time by themselves – and titles include "All Gates Open", "Safe", "Sunday Jam", "Sodom", "A Spectacle", "EFS Nr 99", and "Can Be". LP, Vinyl record album

An extended rock mass from Canterbury Glass – a very early entry in the genre that included work from David Axelrod, Mind Garage, and many others! There's less of a "holy" feel going on here than on other efforts of this type – as Canterbury Glass bring in a fair bit of heavy guitar to their work, mixed with harpsichord and flute to lighten things up at times – and topped with some chanted vocals to accent the spiritual feel of the music. Production is good, but relatively stripped down – which keeps a more earnest quality in place, and never lets things get too overblown. A totally great album from the early years of the New York punk scene – and a set that will be remembered as the moment of musical glory for the legendary Jim Carroll! As with Tom Verlaine, Richard Hell, and Patti Smith – Carroll has roots in writing, but energy that needs music to really set it on fire – sounds that explode here with the intensity of the generation who lived through the city on fire, the garbage strike, and all the other tumult of NYC in the late 70s – an experience that's also added to Jim's young struggles with addiction. The music is every bit as sharp as Carroll's lyrics – and in addition to the seminal "People Who Died", the record sparkles with tunes that include "Three Sisters", "Nothing Is True", "Wicket Gravity", "City Drops Into Night"< "Crow", "I Want The Angel", and "Catholic Boy". Mute, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $20.99 22.98
Early and amazing sounds from electronic genius Chris Carter – material recorded in his home studio during the mid 70s – with a style that clearly lays the blueprint for his collaborations to Throbbing Gristle! Yet without any vocals or other noise, you can really hear the Carter component of the music in a wonderful way – different even than his later collaborations with Cosi Fanni Tutti, even when spare – as the whole vibe here is maybe a more condensed version of Krautrock electronics, taken into the space of songs that are just a few minutes long – but which also have a lot more darkness than other electronic work of the time. That sense of darkness is key – as these tracks are subtle, but very different than spacier or more calming music of the type – proof that Carter was really an emotional pioneer when it came to this side of the spectrum. The music is dark, but also very tuneful – analogue electronics used much more clearly than on most TG material – with voices that are processed in ways that work perfectly next to the Casio keyboards and guitars. A completely charming little record from the duo of Chris Carter and Cosi Fanni Tutti – an album that seems to echo some of the more song-based modes of the electro pop scene of the early 80 – but which has a spare darkness that really keeps things interesting! The album proports to contain "backmasking and subliminal messages which may be of a harmful subversive nature" – and while we've never been able to experience them as such, we can definitely say that there's something special going on here – which may well just be the long experience Carter has with electronic music, which already puts him way ahead of the younger cold wave talents. The elements here are familiar – beats, keyboards, guitars, and processing – of the sort used by so many of their contemporaries, but rarely in ways that move us so much as the duo of Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti – maybe because of all the experience they had going to the farther reaches in TG, which makes the results a lot more powerful when they're in more tuneful territory here. This is the set that really pushed the group over the top – the one that harnessed all the best energy of the previous two records and gave it a strong new focus – one that draws on roots as deep as the late 50s Elvis reference of the cover art, but which also bubbled over with newly approaching 80s musical ideas and politics! Yet the message never gets in the way of the guitar-heavy tuneful appeal of the songs – ringing out for decades on classics like "Train In Vain", "London Calling", "Spanish Bombs", "Lost In The Supermarket", "Guns Of Brixton", "Clampdown", and "Rudy Can't Fail". Leonard CohenSongs Of Leonard Cohen ... LP
Columbia, 1967. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Leonard Cohen's debut for Columbia, one of the most astounding first albums of its era, and to this day a towering achievement in both songwriting and myth making! The production is that perfectly haunting mix of sparseness and grandeur, with Cohen's lyricism piercing and penetrating wonderfully – his voice never sounded better, and this is certainly one of the great "lightening in a bottle" efforts that was hard to top by Cohen or anyone else in the more poetic upper levels of pop music. Includes ""Suzanne", "Master Song", "Winter Lady", "The Stranger Song", "Sisters Of Mercy", "So Long, Marianne", "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye", "Stories Of The Street", "Teachers" and "One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong".
