✨✧ BandMusic From Big Pink ... LP
Capitol, 1968. Very Good Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
The landmark first album from The Band – and along with the follow-up, it's among the greatest records of its time – which is all the more astounding given how independent of late 60s trends it is! Each member of The Band brings such inimitable textures – Garth Hudson's imposing organ grooves, Richard Manuel's aching tenor vocals, Rick Danko's voice and distinctive bass lines, Levon Helm's behind-the-beat drumming and the country wisdom of his voice, Robertson's guitar mastery – this really was THE Band. Includes "Tears Of Rage", "In A Station", "The Weight", "Long Black Veil", "Chest Fever", "Lonesome Suzie", "This Wheels On Fire", "I Shall Be Released" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

BGM (Takayuki Shiraishi)Back Ground Music ... LP
Studio Mule (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... $31.99
A set that's hardly background at all – as the tracks here have a lively, forward sort of energy that reminds us of our favorite post-punk experiments from the British and German scenes at the start of the 70s – done with a darkness that really resonates with the album's cover image too! There's hardly any vocals at all on the songs – other than muted, abstracted lyrics that are buried under brooding basslines, echoey drums, and fuzzy work on guitar and keyboards – all with a moody Factory Records sort of vibe – and by that, we mean Factory circa 1980, not the later sunnier years. Titles include "Neo Dancer", "And", "Repeat", "Membership Card", "Romantic Romance", and "Recovery Room". LP, Vinyl record album

Bonniwell Music MachineBonniwell Music Machine (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warner/Real Gone, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
An amazing second chapter for The Music Machine – working here with the last name of leader Sean Bonniwell in their name – in a groove that's even weirder and wilder than before! The group take on an odd new sound here – still the heady brew of fuzz and Hammond on their original garagey recordings from LA – but with a mode that also really lets Bonniwell's offbeat character come to the forefront – both in the odd lyrics, and his stark presentation in the lead – a Sunset Strip sense of personality that's almost up there with Kim Fowley at times! The record's definitely one of the weirder, more edgey sides cut for Warner Brothers in the mid 60s – and titles include "Astrologically Incompatible", "Double Yellow Line", "The Trap", "Soul Love", "Bottom Of The Soul", "Me Myself & I", and "The Eagle Never Hunts The Fly". Brian BriggsSelected Music From The Album Brain Damage ... 12-inch
Bearsville, 1980. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $9.99
A great lost record of minimalist club – a set that we'd rank right up there with classics by Arthur Russell, Liquid Liquid, or some of the other most creative talents on the New York scene at the start of the 80s! As with work by those other two artists, there's an experimental approach here, but one that's very very groovy – mostly just spare beats, loose instrumentation, and other sounds – woven together in ways that certainly have strong post-punk inspiration, but which can also work perfectly on a dancefloor too! This is the kind of work that would be equally at home in the clubs and in a punk club too – the crossover you'd experience at the legendary Danceteria – and titles include "AEO (parts 1 & 2)", "Psyclone", "Nervous Breakdown", and "Spy Vs Spy". CMU (Contemporary Music Unit)Open Spaces (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Tiger Bay (UK), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99
A really great UK group from that magical time when a few key combos were effortlessly blending together jazz, rock, and some more experimental modes – coming up with a really special sound that makes a record like this an overlooked classic that maybe sounds better today than it did when it was released! The group clearly have jazz chops, but also play heavy guitars with some bluesy influences – yet with a sense of chromatic changes that really keeps things interesting without ever losing their focus. The lovely Larraine sings on a few tracks, sometimes wordlessly – and titles include "Henry", "Open Spaces", "Mystical Sounds", "Clown", "Slow & Lonesome Blues", and a version of the Pharoah Sanders tune "Japan". Country Joe & The FishElectric Music For The Mind & Body ... LP
Vanguard, 1967. Very Good ... $11.99
A seminal set from Country Joe & The Fish – one of those albums that brought the new psychedelic sound strongly into the mainstream – but all without softening up or commercializing it at all! There's still a very sharp edge to the record – mean organ lines, fuzzy guitar, and lots of cool production that makes the sounds weirder and more watery than before – even the vocals, which have this edge that nobody would ever refer to as Sunshine Pop! In a way, the whole set's as sinister as any of the most groundbreaking albums on Elektra from the time – and definitely shows that both Vanguard and the group were at the forefront of the new psych recording scene. Titles include "Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine", "Super Bird", "Death Sound", "Sad And Lonely Times", "The Masked Marauder", "Grace", and "Bass Strings". LP, Vinyl record album

Groovy, BABY! Bob Crewe's swingin' follow-up to his Music to Watch Girls By, given a slightly Brit easy twist with cuts like "Birds of Britain", and "Chelsea Girls". Very groovy, with a swingin London sound. As the lyrics to "Birds" go, "Chasin after chicks is kicks, but when I spend my time in England, here's the word: I want a bird!". Dinosaur L (Arthur Russell)24 24 Music ... CD
Sleeping Bag, 1981. Used ... $7.99
An incredible full album from Dinosaur L – the legendary New York dancefloor project of Arthur Russell! The group's a punky, funky, chunky amalgam of bass thumping, guitar riffing, keyboard filling, and sax honking – all very much in the spirit of Russell's best quirky club work of the time, but with the added sound here of a more expanded approach – one that takes the tunes in a whole new territory than the more famous 12" singles! The tracks on the original set were simply numbered – "1", "2", "3", and so on – and come across almost as free-jamming instrumentals – but this reissue appends the songs with their 12" titles, so "#1" gets parenthetically entitled "You're Gonna Be Clean On Your Bean" and "#5" as "Go Bang!", plus this disc adds several 12" versions that were not on the original LP release, like Francois K's mix of 'Go Bang!" and Larry Levan's mix of "In The Corn Belt". Totally great stuff – as experimental as it is funky! (Soul, Rock) CD

William EatonMusic By William Eaton ... LP
Morning Trip (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... About March 1, 2020 (delayed)
Beautifully mellow sounds from William Eaton – a 70s hippie-esque figure who wandered the desert in Arizona, and had a great talent for building his own stringed instruments! Here, William's working on an assortment of self-created guitars – one with 6 strings, one with 12, and one with a whopping 26 strings – dubbed an "elesion harmoniom", and sounding a lot more like a harp than anything else! The style of these tunes is spare and often spacey – played with sounds of nature in mind, often in ways that flow out in the breeze, and come back with a slight little echo. The home made ("private press", if you will) nature of the original album is expanded nicely here with additional notes and photos – and the CD features a total of 18 tracks in all. EG/Astralwerks, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 24.99
A compilation LP of sorts – though at the time of its release most of this material had not been heard in this form! The album's more or less part of the "Ambient" series Eno had started that year with Music For Airports – and it's presented with similarly simple, elegant packaging – a cool divergence from the more striking Eno of a few years before. The set is made up of various bits, record either exclusively for film use, or that in one way or another found their way into films – and contains mostly short tunes, some thematic, others purely sonic wallpaper, but always compelling! 18 tracks, including "M386", "Aragon", "Two Rapid Formations", "Slow Water", "Sparrowfall", "Evenings In Dense Fog", "A Measured Room", "Strange Light", and "Final Sunset". Ron Geesin & Rogers WatersMusic From The Body ... LP
Harvest (UK), 1970. Very Good ... $19.99
An incredibly tripped-out record – of the sort we're stunned was ever recorded for a major! The work's a side project of Roger Waters from Pink Floyd, done in collaboration with Ron Geesin for a film directed by Roy Battersby – and it's a shifting landscape of short experimental tracks, easily drifting back and forth between off-kilter instrumental numbers to sing-songy vocal ones that are far madder than Syd Barrett's work ever was. There's some nice folksy touches that sit by the tripped-out guitar work – and overall, the album's relatively introspective, especially for the setting, with less of the guitar-churning sound than you'd expect from Floyd at this point! Titles include "Body Transport", "Embryonic Womb Walk", "Give Birth To A Smile", "Chain Of Life", "Dance Of The Red Corpuscles", "Our Song", and "Bridge Passage For Three Plastic Teeth". Dreamy sounds from Iasos – an early proponent of the world of new age music, but one that's far hipper than the bigger-label acts to come in the 80s! This set is beautifully spare and meditative – two side-long tracks, each a kind of warmer, more sentimental take on territory that Brian Eno was exploring with his ambient music projects – inflected maybe with a slightly spiritual vibe, as you'd guess from the title! Instrumentation is mostly electric, but used in ways that also really show the manner in which these early American pioneers of the format were marking their own space away from German electronic experimentation. Bizarre home made electronics from the enigmatic Iasos – an artist who later went onto a bit of fame in the new age, but who's working here in a trippier, spacier, almost psychedelic mode! The style is often quite personal, and almost naive – as Iasos works on guitar, keyboards, amplified flute, and other odd tape and studio effects – all flowing out with a style that's often a bit cosmic, and which could work well as some of the shorter link tracks on an early 70s Impulse album. The set features vocal performances by a group of rural school students recorded in the mid 70s – often performing alongside just a bit of sad-tinged piano or guitar, as they deliver these surprisingly compelling versions of songs from their generation – tunes by David Bowie, Wings, The Beach Boys, and others – in versions that are completely different than the originals. The whole thing's about as strange as you can imagine – and has had a huge amount of attention and followers over the years. Wall MatthewsSpine River – The Guitar Music Of Wall Matthews 1967 to 1981 ... LP
Tompkins Square, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $18.99
Sublime solo guitar work from Wall Matthews – a musician who's maybe best known for his work in the group Entourage, who issued two 70s albums on Folkways – although that group is also pretty darn obscure too! Matthews has a great sound here – a solo acoustic mode that's filled with experimental elements, but also very down to earth – part of the 60s legacy of Robbie Basho and John Fahey, but also graced with a chromatic sensibility that points the way towards the direction of William Ackerman. Those references are all pretty huge in our mind, and very well-attached here – on a beautiful set of tracks that should get Wall a much larger place in the acoustic underground. Titles include "Spine River", "The Doves Of Venus", "Wendy's Piece", "The Dance In Your Eye", "Roping", "Kotokes", and "Walk In A Country Rain". (Folk/Country, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Meek/Pierre Boulez/Luc FerrariI Hear A New World – The Pioneers Of Electronic Music (3CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A really cool little package – one that brings space age sounds from both the world of mainstream pop, and the farther reaches of electronic music composition in the postwar years! The core of CD1 is the groundbreaking album I Hear A New World by Joe Meek – presented here both in the "restored" version that was first issued by RPM in 1991, and the original unreleased tapes from 1960. The whole record is like The Ventures meeting space aliens – and Joe Meek composed and conceived the incredible 60s session of strange space-age instrumentals – one that mixes instrumental surf-flavored guitars with crazy sound effects and production techniques, for an out-of-this-world batch of tracks that's like nothing else we can think of! Tracks include "Glob Waterfall", "I Hear A New World", "Orbit Around The Moon", "March Of The Dribcots", and "Valley Of The Saroos". CD1 also features 11 more weird electronic tracks from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop – and from Ray Cathode. Then CD2 and CD3 move into the darker corners of experimental electronics and musique concrete – with works that include "Dripsody" by Hugh Le Caine, "Syncopation" by Tom Dissevelt, "Timbres Durees" by Olivier Messiaen, "Poeme Electronique" by Edgard Varese, "The Innocents" by Daphne Oram, "Fontana Mix" by John Cage, "Visage V (parts 1, 2, & 3)" by Luc Ferrari, "Musica Su Due Dimensioni" by Bruno Maderna, "Deux Etudes De Musique Concrete For Magnetic Tape" by Pierre Boulez, "Fantasy In Space" by Otto Luening, and "Piece For Tape Recorder" by Vladimir Ussachevsky. New York Rock & Roll EnsembleReflections – Music Composed By Manos Hadjidakis ... LP
Atco, 1970. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Quite possibly the most interesting album ever from the New York Rock & Roll Ensemble – a set done in close collaboration with Greek soundtrack maestro Manos Hadjidakis! The tunes are all penned by Hadjidakis, and they're performed by the group in an ambitious mode that has more than a few echoes of their Balkan heritage – bits of oboe, cello, and guitar used in ways that have a distinctly Greek-sounding flavor – supported by more conventional rock-styled rhythms that still manage to have a quality that's a bit more majestic than just regular small group rocking! Vocals are all in English, penned by members of the band on top of Hadjidakis' compositions – and the album's a great crossroads between 60s psyche and soundtrack genres. Titles include "Dedication", "The Day", "Love Her", "Dance Of The Dogs", "Kemal", "Orpheus", "Noble Dame", and "Better Way". LP, Vinyl record album

A mindblowing debut from Roxy Music – a record that took the world by storm in the 70s, and which is still pretty darn revolutionary all these many years later! Sure, the cover looks a bit cheesy and trashy, but the core of the music is amazing – this blistering array of guitars, electronics, and saxophone – all honed into songs that provide the perfect setting for the haunting vocals of Bryan Ferry! If you only know these guys from their later, softer work, you'll be quite surprised here – as the saxes by Andy Mackay are woven right in alongside the guitar of Phil Manzanera, and the album's laced with weird electronic and tape touches from Brian Eno. Peter Sinfield produced – as yet another mighty talent that was part of the proceedings – and titles include "Re-make/Re-Model", "Ladytron", "If There Is Something", "HB", "The Bob", "Chance Meeting", "Would You Believe", "Sea Breezes", and "Bitters End". (Note: Record Store Day 2020 has been rescheduled to separate special release days of August 29, September 26 and October 24. The specific release date for each previously announced title is yet to be announced and subject to change. Titles are in limited supply – and will be offered for sale first to customers who visit the Dusty Groove retail outlet in Chicago on August 29, September 26 and October 24 only if it is safe and responsible to open the store, with Covid-19 shelter in place orders no longer in place. Items will not be pre-sold or reserved in any way. However, we will offer up whatever we have left for sale online after 12pm Central on release day.) LP, Vinyl record album

Spotnicks/Russ Garcia/Ron GoodwinOut Of This World (Music In Orbit/Fantastica) ... CD
El (UK), Mid 50s. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
Space age pop galore – from a trio of very groovy sources! The Spotnicks start out the set with three cool guitar instrumentals – "Telstar", "Moonshot", and "Rocket Man" – done in their great blend of Ventures guitar modes and offbeat Joe Meek production styles – with a sound that's years ahead of its time! Next is the excellent album Out Of This World – from Brit arranger Ron Goodwin, with production by the legendary George Martin! The album was billed as Music In Orbit here in the US – and is a wonderful album of space-age easy listening! The album features no electronics, but Goodwin's use of soaring strings is somewhere between the Fantastic Planet soundtrack and some of the later moogy albums in the 60s. Scoring is richly sophisticated, with a complicated approach to the material that would befit a high-end 50s sci-fi soundtrack – made even better by the excellent cover, which features a beautiful purple painting of a rocket blasting off of a planet in space. The whole thing's perhaps a bit more romantic than spooky, but the mood changes nicely from track to track to keep things fresh. Titles include "The Moon", "The Venus Waltz", "Mercury Gets The Message", "The Sun", "Jumping Jupiter", and "Martians On Parade". Last up is Russ Garcia's Fantastica – one of the space-age bachelor pad electronic classics! Russ Garcia was mostly a jazz arranger in his day – but he does a good job of scoring some moody sci-fi tracks for this set – mixing full orchestrations with some great electronics handled by Ted Keep, all in a format that replicates a journey through the universe – with stops at lots of unusual galaxies along the way! The album's got a great mix of complicated strings and woodwinds, which offset the spooky electronics nicely – and although playful, the record also represents some of Garcia's most serious scoring on record. Titles include "Into Space", "Nova", "Monster's Of Jupiter", "Red Sands Of Mars", and "Moon Rise". (Now Sound, Rock) CD

Third Ear BandThird Ear Band's Music From Macbeth ... LP
EMI, 1972. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Shakespeare never sounded so compelling before – given a very cool soundtrack by the Third Ear Band, who were moved to work on this project in collaboration with director Roman Polanski! The music is fantastic away from the film – very different than some of the group's earlier records, and a lot more eerie too – as some of their usual string and reed elements almost take on an electronic vibe in the process! Most tracks are very spacious and open, with the violin and oboe crafting some especially sharp, angular sounds – almost as if the group were let loose in some sort of analogue electronic studio. Titles include "The Beach", "The Banquet", "Dagger & Death", "Bear Baiting", "Groom's Dance", "Prophetics", and "Wicca Way". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Selda BagcanSelda ... CD
B- Music/Finders Keepers, 1975. Used ... $16.99
Funky breaks and fuzzy guitars – one of the most amazing albums to come out of the Turkish scene of the 70s – and one with a sound that really defies categorization! Although the sweet image of a girl and guitar on the cover might make you think the record's a folk set, the overall production is heavily electric – filled with fuzzed-up touches on the guitars, and usually supported by some funky drumming that gives most of the record a cool Eastern break sort of feel! Lyrics aren't in English, but they're oddly compelling even if you don't know what they mean – as Selda's voice has a weird other-wordly quality, and comes off with the same tripped-out qualities as the music! Titles include "Ince Ince", "Nasirli Eller", "Mehmet Emmi", "Dost Uyan", "Gitme", "Kizil Dere", "Yaz Gazeteci Yaz", and "Meydan Sizindir". CD features 5 bonus tracks – but it's not like you've got the original album, and needed those as an incentive to buy the reissue! CD

Nino FerrerRats & Rolls ... CD
Barclay/On Sale Music (Italy), 1970. New Copy ... $16.99
One of the coolest albums we've ever heard from French funk legend Nino Ferrer – and that's saying a lot, given how much we love his records of the 60s! Nino first started out as one of the few continental cats whose energy could match that of the funkiest soul singers in the US at the time – working in a style that clearly drew from the UK mod interpretations of American soul, but with instrumentation that was even sharper than most of those singers and groups – often more directly influenced by the James Brown Band of the late 60s! Yet here, he takes that approach even further – and soars out with grooves that have a more sophisticated flow and a really great vibe, all while still holding onto the best core currents from before – vocals that take all these great twists and turns, and organ lines that flow far past regular rhythms and really illuminate the songs in a unique way. Titles include "Play Boy Scout", "Reminiscenza", "Meglio L'Amore Che La Guerra", "La Pella Nera", "Povero CRisto", "O Mangi Questa Minestra O Salti Dalla Finestra", and "Fratelli E Cosi'Sia". Brother Music (Denmark), 1981. New Copy ... $15.99
The first album from Laid Back – the Danish duo who would soon dominate the world of breakdance with their electro-pop groove! This set has Laid Back sounding maybe a bit more rock at the core, but still with plenty of electronic touches around the edge – maybe a catchier version of DAF in the mid 80s, or a group that's traveling in the same pop territory as Peter Schilling or Nena – right down to their use of English language lyrics in the set! Those lyrics often have a nice accent, though – which also keeps things interesting – on titles that include "Maybe I'm Crazy", "China Girl", "Keep On Moving", "Take Me Home", "Roger", "Night Train Boogie", and "Man From The Moon". CD features a number of bonus tracks from singles – including "Walk On", "New Feeling", and some other mixes too. (Soul, Rock) CD

EMI/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A very cool little album from Placebo – arguably the group's most soulful session ever, and one that draws heavily from American funky jazz at the start of the 70s! The grooves are nice and tight, and keyboards are focused on the most soulful sort of riffs – not nearly as tripped out as in later years, and really doing a great job of sending home the funky rhythms – almost in a way that's sort of early CTI at the best points! Marc Moulin's genius is already firmly in place – and he handles all arrangements, plus plays Fender Rhodes, electric harpsichord, and even what sounds like a bit of moog! Titles include "Humpty Dumpty", "Aria", "Showbiz Suite", "Ball Of Eyes", "You Got Me Hummin", and "Inner City Blues". (Jazz, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Jean Claude VannierL'Enfant Assassin Des Mouches ... CD
B- Music/Finders Keepers, 1972. Used ... $6.99
A baroque instrumental masterpiece from Jean Claude Vannier – Serge Gainsbourg's right hand man at the start of the 70s, and a key figure in the legendary Histoire De Melody Nelson album! The feel here is very much along the lines of work that Serge was doing at the time – larger orchestrations mixed with smaller instrumentation – in a level that's often funky, always baroque, and very much in the best Sexopolis styles of the French pop scene of the time! There's a marked similarity here to some of the work of Michel Colombier – but unlike Colombier, and Gainsbourg, there's no vocals at all on these tracks – and the main genius is carried by Vannier's incredibly arranged strings, rolling rhythms, fuzzy guitars, and dark little soundtrack-styled groove! Some tracks are wonderfully funky, others are moody and tripped-out – and the whole thing's a masterpiece that we'd file right up there with our favorite French work of the time! Titles include "L'Enfanta La Mouche Et Les Allumettes", "Danse Des Mouches Noires Gardes Du Roi", "Mort Du Roi Des Mouches", "Le Papier Tue-Enfant", "Les Garde Volent Au Secours Du Roi", and "Petite Agonie De L'Enfant Assassin". A BolhaUm Passo A Frente (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Continental/Lion, 1973. Used ... $14.99
Massively heavy sounds from A Bolha – a Brazilian group who were previously known as The Bubbles, and backed up Gal Costa during the Tropicalia years – but who work here in a fuzzy, bassy groove that's totally great – definitely an heir to the headier sounds of the UK scene at the start of the 70s! The guitars are definitely in full force here, but the basslines drive things along strongly too – echoing some of the Peruvian sounds of the time, but with a bit more Brazilian sophistication – and definitely a musical echo of lessons learned during Tropicalia, even though the set's a fully instrumental one. Organ also figures in the mix too – and titles include "Bye My Friend", "Razao De Existir", "Um Passo A Frente", "A Esfera", and "Neste Rock Forever". CD is beautifully done – with full notes in the great Lion tradition – and bonus tracks that include "Sem Nada" and "18.30 Parte 1". CD

International Anthem, 2015. New Copy ... $5.99 11.99
Mighty nice work from a really inventive duo – the team of Ryan Oslance on drums and Shane Parish on guitar – both musicians who work with a criss-crossing sound that's part jazz, flavored maybe partly by rock – in a blend that really continues the legacy of some important Chicago sounds of the final years of the 20th Century! There's a wide array of textures from the guitar – sometimes more pronounced leads, sometimes subtle sonic energy, and sometimes rhythmic blasts that really echo the work on drums – which also has a way of stepping between conventional and more unusual modes, as both musicians progress in styles that often have a relatively rhythmic core. Titles include "Power With", "Erosion", "Sundowning", "Rincon Pio Sound", "La Faena", and "Shelter In Place" – a tune that maybe resonates more differently now than when it was recorded! Some of the music here feels like Klan, but other tracks are maybe more personal too – still with some hard rock elements in the mix, but maybe more towards the ballad style – although with styles that change a bit over the scope of the many years in the set – and as with other titles on the Gad label, there's notes in both English and Polish – which really helps you get a handle on the interesting and obscure music. Davie Allan & The Arrows/The Hands Of TimeWild Angels – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Tower, Late 60s. Very Good- ... $3.99
Classic kitschy biker material from Davie Allan and The Arrows – one of the best-ever groups to play on schlocky soundtracks during the 60s! There's lots of guitar and lots of fuzz – and guessing from the photos of the movie, the music was the best thing about it! Toddler Mike Curb put the whole thing together – but the vibe is much more like some of Allan's excellent guitar instrumental albums of the time – apart from the few more standard rock band tracks you'd find in Curb's other productions from the period. Most of the album's instrumental Arrows work – and tracks include "The Chase", "Bongo Party", "Blues Theme", "Theme From Wild Angels", and "The Unknown Rider" – plus the vocal cuts "Theme From The Wild Angels" by The Visitors and "Midnight Rider" by The Hands Of Time. Rex Allen JrToday's Generation ... LP
SSS, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A wild mix of late 60s Nashville songcraft and worldly psychedelic country rock from Rex Allen Jr! Rex is the son of the legendary cowboy singer Rex Allen – and later on he carried the old man's wandering western troubadour torch – but this lost record is darker, stranger and groovier than we would have imagined! The weirdness is in the lyricism – Allen sings in a husky smooth baritone about youth rebellion, LSD, Vietnam, the face of mortality and topical concerns of the era – but he approaches it in the straightforward country music tradition. There are no metaphors – the words aren't surreal, they're severe – and we love it! The production is by Steve Singleton, another legacy candidate – his pops helped resurrect Jerry Lee Lewis and handled other left of center, difficult to pigeonhole country classics with Tom T Hall and Charlie Rich. With Rex he provides unfussy, steel accented honky tonk arrangements with trippy washes of organ, harpsichord and mellotron. Almost certainly too tough a tab to dissolve in the culture of its time – way too weird for country, way too country for the weirdos – now's the time to savor this one! Titles include "The Younger Generation", "I Back Up", "The Children", "Other Husbands And Wives", "Home Song (Dreams OF What May Come)", "The Father Needs A Man", "Black Skies", and "The Corners Of My Life". Overlooked later work from America – not the huge AM radio hits from the time when the group was a trio, and produced by George Martin – but instead, material from a point when they'd trimmed down to a duo, and really found a great way to move their music forward! The approach here still has all the harmonic interplay of before, and as the albums move on, older AOR modes get shed for some slightly more contemporary styles – but still with that kind of golden glow that always made the America approach a lot stronger than most of their contemporaries! Songs are nicely understated, as is the production – and if, like us, you're a fan of the group with a love that goes way deeper than the hits, then you'll find plenty to love here. The package features six full albums, each in original album-styled sleeves – with the releases Silent Letter, Alibi, View From The Ground, Your Move, Perspective, and In Concert. CD

A big international record from Amon Duul – and for good reason, too – as the set's filled with catchy little tracks that have this really cool blend of prog and glam! The style's almost like Roxy Music at points – with the vocals all compressed in the guitars, and this sinister vibe in the instrumentation – played by a group who clearly know how to stretch out more, but instead pack a lot of experimentation into shorter, groovier space. The vocals are in English, but accented – which gives them a further offbeat vibe – and titles include "The King's Chocolate Waltz", "Emigrant Son", "La Krautoma", "Metropolis", "Gala Gnome", and "Mr Kraut's Jinx". MGM/Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 5CD ... $42.99
A fantastic package of work from The Animals – all their great second chapter albums for MGM, offered up here with bonus tracks too! First up is Winds Of Change, presented in both stereo and mono mixes – one of The Animals' most psychedelic outings ever – and also a bit funky at times too! Production by Tom Wilson is really great – echoey at most moments, with a kind of "flash" and shimmer around the drums that really spaces things out, and almost gives a Velvets sort of feel to the proceedings. The group's bluesier roots are still in place at times – but these have also been tripped-out and abstracted too, in modes that are a few years ahead of other blues rock combos on the rise. Titles include "It's All Meat", "Winds Of Change", "Poem By The Sea", "Yes I Am Experienced", "Hotel Hell", "San Franciscan Nights", and "Man Woman". Next is Twain Shall Meet – a set that's not as tripped-out as some of their other late 60s work, and which almost starts to show Eric Burdon's rising love of soul and funk! The sound is still pretty rockish overall – but there's some great use of bass rumbling at the bottom – bringing up a rumbling quality that fits nicely with Burdon's somewhat bleak presentation of the lyrics at various points. Production by Tom Wilson almost has a raspy, lo-fi sort of feel – different than the bluesier roots of the group, and almost a precursor of indie work in decades to come! Titles include the classic "Sky Pilot", plus "Monterey", "Just The Thought", "Closer To The Truth", "No Self Pity", "Orange & Red Beams", and "We Love You Lil". Every One Of Us is a real gem from The Animals' overlooked late 60s years on MGM – a time when the group were easily making some of the most inventive music on the label! The styles here are even wider than before – definitely an attempt to showcase "every one of us" that made up the group – in a blend of spacey sounds, gentle folksy moments, and some of the rougher tones of previous MGM records. Many titles were written only by Burdon – a bit of a change from before – and showcase an increased use of acoustic guitar alongside his bleak vocals. Titles include "The Immigrant Lad", "Year Of The Guru", "Serenade To A Sweet Lady", "White Houses", "New York 1963/America 1968", and "Uppers & Downers". Next is Love Is – a fantastic double-length set from The Animals – recorded in LA in the late 60s, and with plenty of great Sunset Strip influences in the mix! The band here is different than before – with Zoot Money handling both organ and piano, plus a bit of vocals, and Andy Summers joining in on guitar – and production is by the group itself, who shake off some of the trippier styles of previous records, and almost go for a "live in studio" sort of sound! There's a confluence of styles here that's really great – some of the blues of the group's roots, bits of Eric Burdon's growing love of soul, and some fuzzier touches as well. Some tracks are quite long jams, and titles include "Gemini", "Madman", "As The Years Go Passing By", "To Love Somebody", and "I'm An Animal". Bonus tracks include "Monterey (mono single)", "White Houses (single stereo)", "Anything (single)", "Gratefully Dead", "Ain't That So", "When I was Young", "A Girl Named Sandoz", "River Deep Mountain High (single stereo)", and "Sky Pilot (parts 1 & 2)", CD

Vangelis composed the whole set – as an extended piece based on the Apocalypse of St John – and the album was recorded in Paris, away from their native Greece – in a time of political unrest and cultural upheaval that's clearly referenced in the music! There's a really wide array of textures and moods on the set – from sinister to soft, freaky to peaceful, all laid out beautifully with a sense of poetry and power that few other groups could match! Irene Pappas performs a recitation, and also gives some sexy sounds on the classic "Infinity" – and other tunes include "The System", "Babylon", "Loud Loud Loud", "The Four Horsemen", "The Seventh Seal", "Aegian Sea", "The Marching Beast", "Capture Of The Beast", "Altamont", "Seven Trumpets", and "Hic Et Nunc". A pair of great albums from the overlooked Ars Nova – back to back in a single set! First up is the 1968 self-titled Ars Nova – a wonderful little set of post-folk rock – with lots of lovely baroque touches! Ars Nova were really short-lived group – known for only two rare records – but they've got a sound that perfectly sums up a generation! There's a wonderful LA late 60s sound here – somewhere between Love and The Byrds, with the baroque touches of the former and the best country influences of the latter – all wrapped up in earnest, honest songwriting that makes even the ambitious moments come across with surprising charm. A true lost relic, and the kind of record that should be in any late 60s cannon! Titles include "Album In Your Mind", "Pavan For My Lady", "General Clover Ends A War", "And How Am I To Know", "Fields Of People", "Automatic Love", and "Song To The City". Sunshine & Shadows is the second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". The collected work of a mighty trippy group from the Indian scene – a psychedelic combo who worked in the 70s, but who had the same sort of edge you'd hear from the American and British scenes of the late 60s! In truth, there's a fair bit of Anglo influence going on in the music – not just in the English language lyrics, but also in the way the guitars come together with stretched-out, soaring brilliance – flying eight miles high to the sky in a heady brew of freak and fuzz – and turning this approach to some surprising soundtrack numbers too! Production is perfect for the band's vibe – often spacing things out in a really cool way – with some slightly primitive modes that also remind us of the South American psych scene of a few years before. Now Again did a brilliant job with the package – bringing together a host of the group's best tracks from the mid 70s, and a bonus 20 page booklet with full notes on the group, and some very cool photos and ephemera. The whole thing even features a few unreleased numbers – and titles include "Obsession 77", "Sunshine Day", "Butterfly Version 1", "Theme From The Godfather", "Theme From The Fox", "Windmills Of Your Mind", "Booboo Lullaby", "Man You're Not Number One", "Travel On", "Gesthemene", and "Foxy Lady". Pro Musica/Svart (Finland), 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $24.99
Very long and extended jamming work from Ave Rock – a hip Argentine combo from the early 70s, and one that rivals the bigger progressive greats of the European scene at the time! Ave Rock are heavy on the keyboard and guitar lines here – really stretching out with a fluid, well-played approach that's sometimes spacey, but often much more jamming, and really focused on the technical details. Tracks have vocals, but also some very extended instrumental parts – and titles include "Ausencia", "Viva Belgica", "Dejenme Seguir", and "Gritos". LP, Vinyl record album

Harvest/Water, 1970. New Copy ... $7.99 17.99
A wonderful little record – one that's filled with subtle charms and surprising moments of beauty – played by an intimate group of musicians who include Lol Coxhill, David Bedford, and Mike Oldfield! In a way, the record's a bit of a precursor for some of the experiments to come from Coxhill and Bedford – because the set blends together bits of rock, jazz, and other musics – all with a careful sense of production that filters the best elements together nicely, the focuses them into some extremely compelling tunes. Ayers sings on most numbers, but the instrumental side of the album almost gets greater focus – and titles include "May I", "Pisser Dans Un Violon", "The Oyster & The Flying Fish", "Shooting At The Moon", "Red Green & You Blue", "Underwater", and "Lunatics Lament". Capitol, 1969. Very Good ... $24.99
Maybe not the first album from the legendary Band – but a record in which the group get everything completely right all the way through – and sparkle with that special sound that continues to influence generations of music makers, and music lovers! All the great elements the group were bringing to their work with Bob Dylan are in place here – but the focus is completely different, with this warm glow that really fits the vocals of Levon Helm, and a sense of unified vision that makes it really hard to even come up with a match for the energy of the group on this album. The great John Simon adds a few special touches to the overall sound – and titles include "Rockin Chair", "Across The Great Divide", "When You Awake", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Look Out Cleveland", and "King Harvest". Brigitte BardotLa Belle Et Le Blues ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
Brigitte Bardot's best known on these shores as an actress, but during the 60s she cut some really fantastic work on the scene in Paris – including a fair bit of groovers that were done with help from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg! Bardot provided a fantastic new voice in the world of pop music – a singer who was unabashedly open about her desires, and very different than the more melancholy stars of a few years before – a quality that's further emphasized by the wonderfully groovy instrumentation used on most of these tracks! Production and arrangements are superb – and put this music in the best territory of the grooviest 60s French pop by artists like Serge Gainsbourg, France Gall, Jacques Dutronc, and a rare few others. This is the first-ever English-annotated collection of work from the period – and features a whopping 25 tracks from her recordings for Philips and Disc AZ – titles that include "Harley Davidson", "Contact", "Neu Au Soleil", "Je Danse Donc Je Suis", "La Madrague", "Les Hommes Endormis", "Je Voudrais Perdre La Memoire", "Mr Sun", "Le Diable Est Anglais", "Tu Es Venu Mon Amour", "John Et Michel", "Gang Gang", and duets with Serge Gainsbourg on "Bonnie & Clyde" and "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus". Robbie BashoVenus In Cancer ... LP
Blue Thumb/Traffic, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $18.99 24.98
One of the wildest albums ever from the great Robbie Basho – as you might guess from the cover! Basho first made waves with his solo guitar work (and a bit of vocalizations) for the Takoma label, during the early years of John Fahey – but as the 60s ended, Robbie had more of a spiritual awakening – which really changed up certain aspects of his music. The set's still got some beautiful long-spun guitar passages – acoustic work that makes Basho maybe an even closer tie to Sandy Bull than Fahey – but Robbie also sings a bit too, in this weirdly trilling voice that almost feels as if it's been pulled from some 15th century pagan culture, but infused with a new missionary spirit. Most of the set is instrumental, but these vocal moments are wonderfully haunting too – and titles include "Venus In Cancer", "Eagle Sails The Blue Diamond Waters", "Kowaka D'Amour", "Song For The Queen", "Cathedrals Et Fleur De Lis", and "Wine Song (Sweet Wine Of Love)". Beach BoysPet Sounds (mono) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Capitol, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
One of the greatest records of all time – and don't you forget it! Despite the countless lines of type that have been written about this record, nothing does it full justice like an all-through listen – something we're reminded of every time we put this one on the turntable, which is a heck of a lot over the years! Brian Wilson busted his ass making this little gem – and the rest of the world, and the band, were never the same again – awash in harmonies that most other groups tried to match, set to themes of young loss, longing, and frustration that really mark an emotional development – not just in the Beach Boys, but in pop music in general. And although some of the tracks are ones you've heard a million times on oldies stations, they somehow resonate together much more strongly here – taking on new meaning as the smaller elements of each song come into constellation with each other – creating a complicated tapestry of feelings set to near-godlike orchestrations. Titles include "God Only Knows", "Caroline No", "Pet Sounds", "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", and "You Still Believe In Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Biting TonguesLive It Up ... LP
New Hormones/Cache Cache (UK), 1982. New Copy ... $22.99
Great early work from Biting Tongues – a group who gave Factory Records a few great singles in the mid 80s, but who are heard here a few years before – on an album that was only issued on cassette at the time! We've always loved these guys – and they've got a way of mixing the punk/funk of A Certain Ratio with some of the moodier currents of the Manchester scene – touched also by lots of great lines on trumpet and tenor sax, the latter of which almost gives their music some Blurt-like qualities! Yet the rhythms also move more in the cold wave mode – which mixes with the horns and live percussion to create a very cool blend – on titles that include "Denture Beach", "Read This", "Unhook That Boy", "Forty Three", "Evening State", "Or With Eyes Closed", and "Reflector". Huge, dark, and heavy – an album of mythical proportions, and that's a lot to say for a mainstream album – especially one that crossed over as big as this one! It would be hard to imagine the modern rock landscape without this album or group, who provided the template for so much music to follow – and the soundtrack to many bong-fueled excursions to the dark side – a huge legacy in sound, but one that may well still be best begun on this landmark self-titled album! ✨✧ David BlueThese 23 Days In September/Stories/Nice Baby & The Angel/Cupid's Arrow ... CD
Morello (UK), 1968/1971/1973/1976. New Copy 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
Four lost albums from David Blue – a really compelling singer/songwriter, ripe for rediscovery! First up is These 23 Days In September, recorded for Reprise – a really moody little record from David Blue – a folksy singer who's got a style that definitely lives up to the melancholy promise of his name! Blue's definitely an artist with a difference – working in the familiar mode of vocals and acoustic guitar, but with an edge and distinctness that really sets him apart from the folkies of a few year before – that sense of different that really set apart a new wave of contemporaries, like Leonard Cohen, Fred Neill, or Tom Rapp. Titles include "These 23 Days In September", "The Sailor's Lament", "Scales For A Window Thief", "You Will Come Back Again", "Slow & Easy", and "The Grand Hotel". Stories is an overlooked early set on Asylum – the kind of really special singer/songwriter material that really set the label apart at the start of the 70s! David Blue has this compelling vocal style that's moody, but down to earth – inflected here and there with guitar contributions from Ry Cooder, who's understated, but really brings out some special qualities in the tunes. Jack Nitzsche adds in some light strings at points – but overall, things are pretty spare and personal – and titles include "Looking For A Friend", "Another One Like Me", "Sister Rose", "The Blues", "Come On John", "Marianne", and "Fire In The Morning". Nice Baby & The Angel shows David Blue really starting to get some star power in his mix – a fuller set, produced by Graham Nash – with work from Nash on guitar, plus more guitar from Dave Mason and David Lindley – in a nice mix of roots elements, but which never overwhelm that unique sense of songwriting and vocals that set David Blue apart from the rest. Titles include "Darlin Jenny", "Troubadour Song", "Train To Anaheim", "True To You", "On Sunday Any Sunday", and "Outlaw Man". On the cover of Cupid's Arrow, David Blue might look a bit cheesy, what with his open shirt and all – but he's definitely the real deal, and very down to earth in his singer/songwriter approach – with a quality that's only underscored by the lineup on the set – a group that features Levon Helm on drums, Jesse Ed Davis on guitar, David Lindley on mandolin and slide, and Barry Goldberg on piano and organ, and also handling production of the album too. The shift from David's roots is a bit like that taken by other contemporaries who once started in more folksy territory, then found a new way to grow in the west coast singer/songwriter scene – and that means that things are more electrified, but still quite far from mainstream music – with original tunes from Blue throughout, and titles that include "I Feel Bad", "Maria Maria", "Primeval Tune", She's Got You", "Tom's Song", and "Run Run Run". Amazing solo work from ex-Zombie Colin Blunstone – his first album after parting ways with his former group – and one of our favorite albums of all time! Blunstone's vocals were already amazing in The Zombies – especially near the end – but this set takes things even further, by blending his sublime lyrics with spare arrangements that often just feature simple string passages and warm piano parts – subtle accompaniment that leaves Colin strongly in the lead! The songs are wonderful – penned to recall the changes and issues of the year after the parting of the group – with plenty of help from old buddies Rod Argent and Chris White too. There's never been another record like this again, and there never will be – one of the true treasures of the greatest generation of music! Titles include "Let Me Come Closer To You", "I Can't Live Without You", "Smokey Day", and "Say You Don't Mind" – plus a fantastic cover of "Misty Roses", and the more rocking "She Loves The Way They Love Her". Imperial, 1967. Near Mint- ... $11.99
The insane debut of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band – an amazing late 60s Brit ensemble who were almost to music what Monty Python were to TV! This first effort by the group is a mad array of sounds and styles that come together with a great sense of play and joy – a real delight in quick turns, witty phrases, and parodic re-castings of earlier modes – inspired by dada work of the early 20th century, but also handled with a lot more of a post-modern feel overall. Most tracks are short, and many echo earlier music styles, filtered through a slightly psyche filter – and titles include "Death Cab For Cutie", "In San Francisco", "Jollity Farm", "Equestrian Statue", "Cool Brittania", "I'm Bored", "Piggy Bank Love", "Big Shot", "Mickey's Son & Daughter", and "The Sound Of Music". RCA, 1981. Very Good+ ... $7.99
"I'm a rock n' roll puppet, in a band called Bow Wow Wow." What a weird, defiantly appealing moment in pop music it was when Malcolm McClaren assembled members of The Ants and 15-year-old Annabella Lwin – who then paired bratty lyrics with African-inspired drums & rhythms. What should have been an affront to good taste (you can legitimately argue that it it was) just sounds like a bunch of thumping, boisterous fun to us. An amazing legacy of lost music from David Bowie – a host of obscure recordings, demos, and session tracks done in the short space leading up to the Space Oddity album – presented in a book-style package that also features two versions of that classic record too! Some of this material has circulated digitally, others on very expensive vinyl sets, but together the 5CD package offers up the biggest picture we've ever seen of the development of Bowie in the years after his initial recordings for Deram, and his Space Oddity explosion in 1969. CD1 features home demos of tunes that include "Animal Farm", "April's Tooth Of Gold", "The Reverend Raymond Brown", "Mother Grey", "Goodbye 3d Joe", "Angel Angel Grubby Face", and "Space Oddity". CD2 offers up rare demos for Mercury – with titles that include "Janine", "Ching A Ling", "I'm Not Quite", "Lover To The Dawn", "When I'm Five", and "Life Is A Circus". CD3 features Conversation Pieces – alternate takes of "London By Ta Ta" and "In The Heat Of The Morning" - plus BBC sessions, and more alternate takes. CD4 features the original David Bowie album before it transformed into Space Oddity, and CD5 features the full Space Oddity album in its 2019 Tony Visconti mix – both CDs with bonus tracks too. David BowieSpace Oddity (2019 mix) ... CD
Parlophone, 1969. New Copy ... $15.99 16.98
An amazing departure for David Bowie – hardly the kind of record you would expect from his oboe-filled tunes of a few years before – and really the start of the groundbreaking, earthshaking, reinventionist era of his genius! There's a spacious, soaring quality to Space Oddity that's every bit the kind of magical music you might hope for in a set recorded at the close of the 60s – a shift into new modes, new sounds that seem to suck up all the best influences in rock from the previous few years, but fuse it into a new cosmic vision for the next decade. And while others might stumble on cliche with the weight of such a task, Bowie pulls it off brilliantly – mixing his fuzzier feelings with some of his more personal leanings – and showcasing a newly deep sense of songwriting here that's really amazing. Some tunes have the sensitivity of work on Hunky Dory, while others burn with the fire of Man Who Sold The World – all in a balance that never sounds schizophrenic at all. Titles include"Space Oddity", "Memory Of A Free Festival", "God Knows I'm Good", "Cygnet Committee", and "Unwashed & Somewhat Slightly Dazed". Features the special 2019 mix by Tony Visconti! CD
