✨✧ BandMusic From Big Pink ... LP
Capitol, 1968. Very Good Gatefold ... $13.99
The landmark first album from The Band – and along with the follow-up, it's among the greatest records of its time – which is all the more astounding given how independent of late 60s trends it is! Each member of The Band brings such inimitable textures – Garth Hudson's imposing organ grooves, Richard Manuel's aching tenor vocals, Rick Danko's voice and distinctive bass lines, Levon Helm's behind-the-beat drumming and the country wisdom of his voice, Robertson's guitar mastery – this really was THE Band. Includes "Tears Of Rage", "In A Station", "The Weight", "Long Black Veil", "Chest Fever", "Lonesome Suzie", "This Wheels On Fire", "I Shall Be Released" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Beaver & KrauseNonesuch Guide To Electronic Music ... LP
Nonesuch, 1968. Near Mint- 2LPs + Book ... $24.99
One of the most electronic albums that Beaver & Krause ever recorded – a set that was issued as a Guide To Electronic Music, but which has a way more to offer than just a simple demonstration record! Unlike most other B&K albums, which can feature a bit of rock mixing in with the moog, this one is almost entirely analogue electronics – often played in a stark, spare way that has plenty of spooky tones – but also works beautifully together in a mode that's similar to other experimental electronic sets from the time, such as Morton Subotnick's contemporaneous records for Nonesuch. The tracks are very short, with concentrated bursts of sound, and have titles like "White Sound", "Ribbon Controller", and "Sawtooth". Comes in a box with a very cool book that explains a lot of different properties of electronic music. Great for sample-heads or for junior knob twiddlers. 2 LPs strong! LP, Vinyl record album

BGM (Takayuki Shiraishi)Back Ground Music ... LP
Studio Mule (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... $31.99
A set that's hardly background at all – as the tracks here have a lively, forward sort of energy that reminds us of our favorite post-punk experiments from the British and German scenes at the start of the 70s – done with a darkness that really resonates with the album's cover image too! There's hardly any vocals at all on the songs – other than muted, abstracted lyrics that are buried under brooding basslines, echoey drums, and fuzzy work on guitar and keyboards – all with a moody Factory Records sort of vibe – and by that, we mean Factory circa 1980, not the later sunnier years. Titles include "Neo Dancer", "And", "Repeat", "Membership Card", "Romantic Romance", and "Recovery Room". LP, Vinyl record album

Bonniwell Music MachineBonniwell Music Machine (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warner/Real Gone, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... On March 6, 2020
An amazing second chapter for The Music Machine – working here with the last name of leader Sean Bonniwell in their name – in a groove that's even weirder and wilder than before! The group take on an odd new sound here – still the heady brew of fuzz and Hammond on their original garagey recordings from LA – but with a mode that also really lets Bonniwell's offbeat character come to the forefront – both in the odd lyrics, and his stark presentation in the lead – a Sunset Strip sense of personality that's almost up there with Kim Fowley at times! The record's definitely one of the weirder, more edgey sides cut for Warner Brothers in the mid 60s – and titles include "Astrologically Incompatible", "Double Yellow Line", "The Trap", "Soul Love", "Bottom Of The Soul", "Me Myself & I", and "The Eagle Never Hunts The Fly". Warner, 1975. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A pretty darn soulful album of tracks from Jorge Calderon – recorded in LA with help from a great batch of 70s studio players, and an excellent compressed pop sound! The record's not the stuff for weak of heart – but it's a great batch of tightly produced vocal tracks that will appeal to fans of 70s LA. Lots of nice ones – like "Kiss & Run", "At The Beehive", "All The Faces", and "Friends Again". LP, Vinyl record album

Tiger Bay (UK), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99
A really great UK group from that magical time when a few key combos were effortlessly blending together jazz, rock, and some more experimental modes – coming up with a really special sound that makes a record like this an overlooked classic that maybe sounds better today than it did when it was released! The group clearly have jazz chops, but also play heavy guitars with some bluesy influences – yet with a sense of chromatic changes that really keeps things interesting without ever losing their focus. The lovely Larraine sings on a few tracks, sometimes wordlessly – and titles include "Henry", "Open Spaces", "Mystical Sounds", "Clown", "Slow & Lonesome Blues", and a version of the Pharoah Sanders tune "Japan". William EatonMusic By William Eaton ... LP
Morning Trip (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... About March 1, 2020
Beautifully mellow sounds from William Eaton – a 70s hippie-esque figure who wandered the desert in Arizona, and had a great talent for building his own stringed instruments! Here, William's working on an assortment of self-created guitars – one with 6 strings, one with 12, and one with a whopping 26 strings – dubbed an "elesion harmoniom", and sounding a lot more like a harp than anything else! The style of these tunes is spare and often spacey – played with sounds of nature in mind, often in ways that flow out in the breeze, and come back with a slight little echo. The home made ("private press", if you will) nature of the original album is expanded nicely here with additional notes and photos – and the CD features a total of 18 tracks in all. Brian EnoDiscreet Music (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Obscure/Astralwerks, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! LP, Vinyl record album

Ron Geesin & Rogers WatersMusic From The Body ... LP
Harvest (UK), 1970. Near Mint- ... $33.99
An incredibly tripped-out record – of the sort we're stunned was ever recorded for a major! The work's a side project of Roger Waters from Pink Floyd, done in collaboration with Ron Geesin for a film directed by Roy Battersby – and it's a shifting landscape of short experimental tracks, easily drifting back and forth between off-kilter instrumental numbers to sing-songy vocal ones that are far madder than Syd Barrett's work ever was. There's some nice folksy touches that sit by the tripped-out guitar work – and overall, the album's relatively introspective, especially for the setting, with less of the guitar-churning sound than you'd expect from Floyd at this point! Titles include "Body Transport", "Embryonic Womb Walk", "Give Birth To A Smile", "Chain Of Life", "Dance Of The Red Corpuscles", "Our Song", and "Bridge Passage For Three Plastic Teeth". Joe Meek/Pierre Boulez/Luc FerrariI Hear A New World – The Pioneers Of Electronic Music (3CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Just Sold Out!
A really cool little package – one that brings space age sounds from both the world of mainstream pop, and the farther reaches of electronic music composition in the postwar years! The core of CD1 is the groundbreaking album I Hear A New World by Joe Meek – presented here both in the "restored" version that was first issued by RPM in 1991, and the original unreleased tapes from 1960. The whole record is like The Ventures meeting space aliens – and Joe Meek composed and conceived the incredible 60s session of strange space-age instrumentals – one that mixes instrumental surf-flavored guitars with crazy sound effects and production techniques, for an out-of-this-world batch of tracks that's like nothing else we can think of! Tracks include "Glob Waterfall", "I Hear A New World", "Orbit Around The Moon", "March Of The Dribcots", and "Valley Of The Saroos". CD1 also features 11 more weird electronic tracks from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop – and from Ray Cathode. Then CD2 and CD3 move into the darker corners of experimental electronics and musique concrete – with works that include "Dripsody" by Hugh Le Caine, "Syncopation" by Tom Dissevelt, "Timbres Durees" by Olivier Messiaen, "Poeme Electronique" by Edgard Varese, "The Innocents" by Daphne Oram, "Fontana Mix" by John Cage, "Visage V (parts 1, 2, & 3)" by Luc Ferrari, "Musica Su Due Dimensioni" by Bruno Maderna, "Deux Etudes De Musique Concrete For Magnetic Tape" by Pierre Boulez, "Fantasy In Space" by Otto Luening, and "Piece For Tape Recorder" by Vladimir Ussachevsky. EG/Reprise, 1979. Used ... $4.99
A brilliant little comeback album for Roxy Music – their first album in 4 years after Siren, and a well-done departure that takes off from older records without losing any of their greatness! In a way, the set's almost the group's Lodger – a similar effort to Bowie's record from the same time that reflects a move away from heavier styles of earlier years, but never loses the edge of the group's best work. Manifesto also reflects some of the lessons learned by Bryan Ferry on his solo records – a bit leaner and cleaner presentation of the songs – but the album itself is also strongly a group production effort, and certainly feels that way in its use of Phil Manzenera's great guitars and Andy Mackay's horn arrangements. Titles include "Ain't That So", "Stronger Through The Years", "Trash", "Manifesto", "Angel Eyes", "Spin Me Round", "Cry Cry Cry", and "My Little Girl". CD

The group still share some of the tuneful qualities of their contemporaries, and a number of songs here are almost creeping towards crossover indie hit status – yet mixed with others that are maybe more dreamy, a bit like the vibe of the earliest Cherry Red albums by Felt – with whom the group share a great ear for watery guitar parts with a really unique sense of color. Titles include "Echoplay", "Clocktower Lodge", "Clint", "Lope", "Cloud 9", "Alice Isn't Playing", and "Far From The Sea". Bob Seger & The Last HeardHeavy Music – The Complete Cameo Recordings 1966/1967 ... LP
Cameo/Abkco, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $18.99 21.99
A fantastic early side of work from 70s superstar Bob Seger – and one that comes as quite a surprise, compared to his hits! This early material is really raw, gritty, and definitely shows Bob's roots in the same Detroit scene that was changing the worlds of both soul and rock in the late 60s – often with groups that had an equal emphasis on both sides of the spectrum! In fact, there's a surprisingly strong current of soul that runs through many of these cuts – a romping energy that really matches the freakier, fuzzier touches of the instrumentation – all with results that will have you maybe thinking about Bob in a whole new way. Some of the modes recall the best early Mitch Ryder material, but often with a trippier sort of vibe – and although the tracks came out as singles on the Cameo label in the mid 60s, this is the first full album ever issued of the material. Titles include "Sock It To Me Santa", "Heavy Music (parts 1 & 2)", "Chain Smokin", "Persecution Smith", "Vagrant Winter", "East Side Story", "Very Few", and "Florida Time". LP, Vinyl record album

Elektra, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $3.99
A surprising late folk entry in the Elektra Records catalog – recorded in the early 70s, and with some sublime production from the great Gary Usher! The sound is definitely contemporary folk, as promised in the title – but there's more of a singer/songwriter sensibility too – more mature songs than straighter folk, made even more so by Usher's production – and harmonies on some of the vocals that almost recall the post-folk world over at Atlantic. Steve Melshenker and Steve Cowan wrote the album, and do most of the vocals – and both play acoustic guitar too – alongside piano, flute, dobro, bass, and cello, which makes for a warm acoustic sound. The title certainly gets it right – as Spacemen 3 were legally-registered heroin addicts in the UK at the time of this recording – very unusual in the years before heroin chic of the 90s! The set came out after the group's first few landmark records, but actually features earlier demo material recorded in 1986 – really wonderful sounds that are a great change from the tighter direction the group were taking as the 90s moved on – as these sides still have them very much awash in fuzz, and probably pretty fuzzed-out themselves! Sonic Boom provides loads of wonderfully trippy guitar feedback, and the group's a quartet here – with guitar, bass, and percussion – on titles that include "Come Down Easy", "That's Just Fine", "Mary Anne", "Sound Of Confusion", "A-Men", and "Losing Touch With My Mind". El (UK), Mid 50s. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
Space age pop galore – from a trio of very groovy sources! The Spotnicks start out the set with three cool guitar instrumentals – "Telstar", "Moonshot", and "Rocket Man" – done in their great blend of Ventures guitar modes and offbeat Joe Meek production styles – with a sound that's years ahead of its time! Next is the excellent album Out Of This World – from Brit arranger Ron Goodwin, with production by the legendary George Martin! The album was billed as Music In Orbit here in the US – and is a wonderful album of space-age easy listening! The album features no electronics, but Goodwin's use of soaring strings is somewhere between the Fantastic Planet soundtrack and some of the later moogy albums in the 60s. Scoring is richly sophisticated, with a complicated approach to the material that would befit a high-end 50s sci-fi soundtrack – made even better by the excellent cover, which features a beautiful purple painting of a rocket blasting off of a planet in space. The whole thing's perhaps a bit more romantic than spooky, but the mood changes nicely from track to track to keep things fresh. Titles include "The Moon", "The Venus Waltz", "Mercury Gets The Message", "The Sun", "Jumping Jupiter", and "Martians On Parade". Last up is Russ Garcia's Fantastica – one of the space-age bachelor pad electronic classics! Russ Garcia was mostly a jazz arranger in his day – but he does a good job of scoring some moody sci-fi tracks for this set – mixing full orchestrations with some great electronics handled by Ted Keep, all in a format that replicates a journey through the universe – with stops at lots of unusual galaxies along the way! The album's got a great mix of complicated strings and woodwinds, which offset the spooky electronics nicely – and although playful, the record also represents some of Garcia's most serious scoring on record. Titles include "Into Space", "Nova", "Monster's Of Jupiter", "Red Sands Of Mars", and "Moon Rise". (Now Sound, Rock) CD

The titles are relatively short, but spin out with an open-ended quality that's almost like that of much longer instrumental jams – built up out of a spare and shifting assemblage of elements that include organ, flute, clarinet, piano, gong, and guitar – plus a bit of softly-sung vocals on a few numbers. There's an almost folk-like fragility to some of the tunes, but others have a more spacious feel that fits their use in a second-generation surf film nicely. Titles include "Cat Clarinet Mit Orgel", "Follow Me", "Pseudo Tragic Dramatic", "Sea Of Joy", "Thank You", "Softly Softly", "Syndrome", and "Down To The Sea". Omni (Australia), 1950s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
A fantastic collection of offbeat country music songs from the postwar years – tunes that begin during the Korean War, end during Vietnam, and embrace a lot of Cold War anxiety in between! As with other titles from this great label – like the Hillbillies In Hell series – there's a great theme at the core, with so many different varieties of songs that we're amazed at how much the compilers were able to dig up! You'll probably recognize a few of these, but most of the tunes are from a pretty deep dig – and even longtime country freaks like ourselves are hearing most of these for the first time. Titles include "Freedom Monkey" by Doc Williams, "Bearded Bandit Of Cuba" by Art & Glenda Davis, "Fallout" by Red Castle, "Ballad Of Two Brothers" by Autry Inman, "Little Boy Soldier" by Wanda Jackson, "Crazy Vietnam War" by Stringbean, "Congratulations" by Arlene Harden, "The Patriot" by Marie Roberson, "The Craziest War Of The Universe" by Jefferson County Bluegrass Boys, and "I'm No Communist" by Grandpa Jones. Svart (Finland), 1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $14.99
Finland's been giving us some great funk and soul sounds in recent years, but that legacy stretches back much longer than we might have guessed – to a point that includes all these groovy disco and electronic dance tracks from the 80s! The set's a follow-up to the Satan In Love compilation, which charted similar territory – but this one moves more into a world that's influenced by some of the electro pop modes that were coming out of the UK in the early 80s, with maybe a touch of the European disco of the decade before – especially in the style of some of the female singers here, who could just as easily have been working with Munich Machine, or some of the other German and Italian groups. Lyrics are mostly in Finnish, but the keyboards, drum machines, and basslines are universal – on titles that include "Jossakin Jos Halaut" by Eini, "Jupiter" by Jori Sivonen, "Big & Beautiful" by Visual, "Night Is Like Magic" by Biba, "Hi Jacker" by Buffalo Soldier, "Sormus" by Clifters, "Grandmaster Klaus" by Mad Lindell, "Nuori Inka" by Jarmo Juhani, "Robotin USA" by Vaarallinen Mutanti, "Cold War On The Rocks" by Step On The Other Side, and "Tahdenlento" by Mika Sundqvist. Soul Jazz (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 22.99
A totally great look at the explosion of electronic sounds in German music during the 70s – a set that goes way past more familiar Krautrock territory, to bring together elements from the artier side of the spectrum too, and even run up to some of the first great moments of the German new wave! Soul Jazz have been down this path before, but this time they're maybe following the road a little farther – as the track selection is especially great, and has a way of really illuminating the special sound of this generation, even if you already know some of the music! There's a few more meditative moments than on previous volumes, mixed with some tuneful tracks, funky numbers, and even a few subtle rockers – all laid out in a way that really makes the songs sound great together as a whole. Titles include "Dronz" by Novalis, "Wide Open Space Machine" by Klaus Weiss, "Deutscher Wald" by Deutsche Wertarbeit, "I'll Be Your Singer You'll Be My Song" by AR & Machines, "The Brain Of Oskar Panizza" by Michael Bundt, "And The Waters Opened" by Between, "White Overalls" by La Dusseldorf, "Tanz Der Vogel In Den Winden" by Achim Reichel, "Hollywood" by Cluster, "Die Haut Der Frau" by Pyrolator, and "Passage" by Streetmark. VariousFrom These Shores – Otherworldly Music & Far Out Sounds From Hawaii ... LP
Aloha Got Soul, 1960s/1970s/1980s. New Copy ... $18.99
A really unusual little compilation – hardly anything that you might expect when you think of Hawaiian music – but that's kind of the lesson we've also been learning from the Aloha Got Soul label! Instead, the package brings together obscure recordings from the island state – tracks from the 60s, 70s, and 80s – many of which fall into a unique space that's really beyond any sort of easy categorization or genre – described on the cover as "sun-tinged folk" and "soft psych" – two phrases that only get at the tip of the iceberg of what's going on! Much of the music is laidback and mellow, but also has a sunny, breezy vibe that ever keeps things from being too sleepy – maybe touches of Cali soul and rock in the post-folk, post-Sunshine Pop world – but with a special sound that's as far from that scene as Hawaii is from the mainland. Titles include "Waves" by Harry Sonoda, "In Hawaii" by Dennis Soares, "Reb'll Echo" by Richard Reb'll, "Righteous Morning" by Gordon Broad, "Kaimu Sun" by Alice Wise, "Magic Sands" by Mofoya, "Revelation" by Burgess & Brooks, "High Tide" by Eddie Suzuki, "Garden In The Rain" by Merrell Fankhauser, and "How Many Times" by Lyle K'Ang. Noise galore from the British scene of the punk and post-punk years – a fantastic exploration of the deeper sonic riches of the world of records at the time – and one that effortlessly moves between art, academic, and more popular-based recordings! You'll recognize some of these artists from later, straighter work – or from earlier, more progressive sides – and together with the rest, the package presents a beautifully bleak British musical landscape – sounds that maybe provide the breeding ground for the later industrial scene, but without any of its cliches – or which maybe help the earlier art rock generation to find a bit more edge and relevance in the punk generation! As always with Cherry Red, the notes and package are as great as the music – and the set features dozens of tracks by artists who include Robert Wyatt, Test Dept, Robert Rental, Alterations, Art Bears, A Tent, Gavin Bryars, Hula, Nocturnal Emissions, Robert Fripp, Faction, Zos Kia, Eyeless In Gaza, David Cunningham, Clock DVA, Will Sergeant, Swell Maps, Soft Machine, Pop Group, This Heat, Blancmange, Throbbing Gristle, and many more! Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $11.99
One of the greatest guy/girl songwriting teams of the 60s – featured here in a killer collection of some of their best work! The range of artists here is nicely wide – from rockers to pop crooners to soul groups – and all of the tunes are key readings of songs penned by Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, possibly not the highest-charting versions, but easily some of the greatest ever set to record! Ace really did a great job with this one – matching the heights of their other songwriter series titles, and really bringing out the darkness in the Mann/Weil songs – a subtle sort of sadness that comes through perfectly in most of these versions. The 24 page booklet features track-by-track notes on the tunes – really getting at the story of the recordings – and titles include "It's Not Easy" by The Sweet Inspirations, "Kicks" by Del Shannon, "It's Getting Better" by Mama Cass, "The Bossa Nova" by Tippie & The Clovers, "Hungry" by Paul Revere & The Raiders, "It's A Happening World" by The Tokens, "Chico's Girl" by The Girls, "Glitter & Gold" by The Turtles, "In The Park" by The Drifters, "Where Do I Belong" by Calvin Grayson, "Let Me Walk With You" by The 2 Of Clubs, "She Is Today" by Bergen White, "Girl It's Alright Now" by Bruce & Terry, "Where Have You Been All Of My Life" by Arthur Alexander, and "I'd Be So Good For You" by Joanie Sommers. Nino FerrerRats & Rolls ... CD
Barclay/On Sale Music (Italy), 1970. New Copy ... $22.99
One of the coolest albums we've ever heard from French funk legend Nino Ferrer – and that's saying a lot, given how much we love his records of the 60s! Nino first started out as one of the few continental cats whose energy could match that of the funkiest soul singers in the US at the time – working in a style that clearly drew from the UK mod interpretations of American soul, but with instrumentation that was even sharper than most of those singers and groups – often more directly influenced by the James Brown Band of the late 60s! Yet here, he takes that approach even further – and soars out with grooves that have a more sophisticated flow and a really great vibe, all while still holding onto the best core currents from before – vocals that take all these great twists and turns, and organ lines that flow far past regular rhythms and really illuminate the songs in a unique way. Titles include "Play Boy Scout", "Reminiscenza", "Meglio L'Amore Che La Guerra", "La Pella Nera", "Povero CRisto", "O Mangi Questa Minestra O Salti Dalla Finestra", and "Fratelli E Cosi'Sia". The first album from Laid Back – the Danish duo who would soon dominate the world of breakdance with their electro-pop groove! This set has Laid Back sounding maybe a bit more rock at the core, but still with plenty of electronic touches around the edge – maybe a catchier version of DAF in the mid 80s, or a group that's traveling in the same pop territory as Peter Schilling or Nena – right down to their use of English language lyrics in the set! Those lyrics often have a nice accent, though – which also keeps things interesting – on titles that include "Maybe I'm Crazy", "China Girl", "Keep On Moving", "Take Me Home", "Roger", "Night Train Boogie", and "Man From The Moon". CD features a number of bonus tracks from singles – including "Walk On", "New Feeling", and some other mixes too. (Soul, Rock) CD

Terry Riley's masterpiece, and an enduring classic that never grows old – and which never lapses into the hippy dippyness of some of his other work! The piece features 53 short musical passages, played in an order defined by the players, in minimal repetition, moving in and out of phase synchronicity – ever shifting, turning, and drifting – all to create a remarkable tapestry of sound, texture, and melody. B- Music/Finders Keepers, 1970s. Used ... $11.99
Fuzzy, funky, and freaky – some really incredible work from Hungarian rocker Sarolta Zalatnay – an artist with a groove that's a lot easier to get than her name! The work here was recorded in collaboration with 70s groups Locomitiv GT, Metro, Omega, and Skorpio – all of whom are pretty darn funky at times – with an approach that mixes heavy drums, rumbling bass, and lots of fuzzy guitars – making for a fair bit of break-heavy tracks on the set. Topped with Sarolta's vocals, the sound is somewhere between Betty Davis on her classic Just Sunshine albums and Gal Costa at the end of the 60s – but also a fair bit more exotic too, given the Hungarian language, and the use of Eastern phrasing on some of the tunes. And if you're scratching your head because you've never heard of Zalatnay before, don't worry – because the package features some great notes on her sordid career from the 70s onward – even though the music alone here should be more than enough to win you over! Titles include "Ne Hidd El", "Itt A Nyar", "Egyser", "Rogos Uton", "Zold Borostyan", "Munanyag Almok", "The Freak", "Move Over", "Oh Ha Milliomos Lennek", and "Fekete Beat". CD

Massively heavy sounds from A Bolha – a Brazilian group who were previously known as The Bubbles, and backed up Gal Costa during the Tropicalia years – but who work here in a fuzzy, bassy groove that's totally great – definitely an heir to the headier sounds of the UK scene at the start of the 70s! The guitars are definitely in full force here, but the basslines drive things along strongly too – echoing some of the Peruvian sounds of the time, but with a bit more Brazilian sophistication – and definitely a musical echo of lessons learned during Tropicalia, even though the set's a fully instrumental one. Organ also figures in the mix too – and titles include "Bye My Friend", "Razao De Existir", "Um Passo A Frente", "A Esfera", and "Neste Rock Forever". A long-overdue full length album from Ace Of Cups – a really unusual female group from the Bay Area scene of the late 60s – but one who never hit the heights of their bigger San Francisco contemporaries! The girls have this really great look on the back – kind of flower power, but with a bit more charm – a quality that comes through in the music, with is often more garagey than trippy – but which also has a way of putting forth female vocals and honest ideas that might not flourish this strongly for similar groups until the post-punk years. That approach makes the whole thing a truly timeless collection of tracks – of the sort that maybe resonate more strongly today than they did back in the 60s. Overlooked later work from America – not the huge AM radio hits from the time when the group was a trio, and produced by George Martin – but instead, material from a point when they'd trimmed down to a duo, and really found a great way to move their music forward! The approach here still has all the harmonic interplay of before, and as the albums move on, older AOR modes get shed for some slightly more contemporary styles – but still with that kind of golden glow that always made the America approach a lot stronger than most of their contemporaries! Songs are nicely understated, as is the production – and if, like us, you're a fan of the group with a love that goes way deeper than the hits, then you'll find plenty to love here. A massive amount of early work by The Animals – brought together in one overstuffed package with some unreleased tracks as well! The group here have a great rough sound – much more bluesy than in later years, which turns out to be a perfect setting for the young Eric Burdon – whose vocals soar out wonderfully over a mix of original tunes and remakes of American classics by folks like Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, Sam Cooke, Bo Diddley, and others! Producer Mickie Most really knows how to keep the right sort of edge on the tunes – lots of raw power in the instrumentation, especially the Hammond and guitar – and a stark, dark quality to Eric's vocals that went onto become the stuff of legend. Package features 40 tracks in all – with titles that include "I Believe To My Soul", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", "Club A Go Go", "For Miss Caulker", "Feel", "Boom Boom", "Don't Want Much", "It's My Life", "House Of The Rising Sun", "We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place", and "I'm Gonna Change The World". MGM/Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 5CD ... $42.99
A fantastic package of work from The Animals – all their great second chapter albums for MGM, offered up here with bonus tracks too! First up is Winds Of Change, presented in both stereo and mono mixes – one of The Animals' most psychedelic outings ever – and also a bit funky at times too! Production by Tom Wilson is really great – echoey at most moments, with a kind of "flash" and shimmer around the drums that really spaces things out, and almost gives a Velvets sort of feel to the proceedings. The group's bluesier roots are still in place at times – but these have also been tripped-out and abstracted too, in modes that are a few years ahead of other blues rock combos on the rise. Titles include "It's All Meat", "Winds Of Change", "Poem By The Sea", "Yes I Am Experienced", "Hotel Hell", "San Franciscan Nights", and "Man Woman". Next is Twain Shall Meet – a set that's not as tripped-out as some of their other late 60s work, and which almost starts to show Eric Burdon's rising love of soul and funk! The sound is still pretty rockish overall – but there's some great use of bass rumbling at the bottom – bringing up a rumbling quality that fits nicely with Burdon's somewhat bleak presentation of the lyrics at various points. Production by Tom Wilson almost has a raspy, lo-fi sort of feel – different than the bluesier roots of the group, and almost a precursor of indie work in decades to come! Titles include the classic "Sky Pilot", plus "Monterey", "Just The Thought", "Closer To The Truth", "No Self Pity", "Orange & Red Beams", and "We Love You Lil". Every One Of Us is a real gem from The Animals' overlooked late 60s years on MGM – a time when the group were easily making some of the most inventive music on the label! The styles here are even wider than before – definitely an attempt to showcase "every one of us" that made up the group – in a blend of spacey sounds, gentle folksy moments, and some of the rougher tones of previous MGM records. Many titles were written only by Burdon – a bit of a change from before – and showcase an increased use of acoustic guitar alongside his bleak vocals. Titles include "The Immigrant Lad", "Year Of The Guru", "Serenade To A Sweet Lady", "White Houses", "New York 1963/America 1968", and "Uppers & Downers". Next is Love Is – a fantastic double-length set from The Animals – recorded in LA in the late 60s, and with plenty of great Sunset Strip influences in the mix! The band here is different than before – with Zoot Money handling both organ and piano, plus a bit of vocals, and Andy Summers joining in on guitar – and production is by the group itself, who shake off some of the trippier styles of previous records, and almost go for a "live in studio" sort of sound! There's a confluence of styles here that's really great – some of the blues of the group's roots, bits of Eric Burdon's growing love of soul, and some fuzzier touches as well. Some tracks are quite long jams, and titles include "Gemini", "Madman", "As The Years Go Passing By", "To Love Somebody", and "I'm An Animal". Bonus tracks include "Monterey (mono single)", "White Houses (single stereo)", "Anything (single)", "Gratefully Dead", "Ain't That So", "When I was Young", "A Girl Named Sandoz", "River Deep Mountain High (single stereo)", and "Sky Pilot (parts 1 & 2)", CD

One of the coolest rock concept albums ever – and arguably the crowning moment for Aphrodite's Child – an incredibly hip Greek group from the early 70s – featuring a young Demis Roussos on vocals, and Vangelis Papathanassiou on organ, piano, vibes, flute, and a lot of other instrumentation! Vangelis composed the whole set – as an extended piece based on the Apocalypse of St John – and the album was recorded in Paris, away from their native Greece – in a time of political unrest and cultural upheaval that's clearly referenced in the music! There's a really wide array of textures and moods on the set – from sinister to soft, freaky to peaceful, all laid out beautifully with a sense of poetry and power that few other groups could match! Irene Pappas performs a recitation, and also gives some sexy sounds on the classic "Infinity" – and other tunes include "The System", "Babylon", "Loud Loud Loud", "The Four Horsemen", "The Seventh Seal", "Aegian Sea", "The Marching Beast", "Capture Of The Beast", "Altamont", "Seven Trumpets", and "Hic Et Nunc". The second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". Satoshi AshikawaStill Way (Wave Notation 2) ... LP
WRWTFWW (Switzerland), 1982. New Copy ... $26.99
A beautiful example of the really special sort of instrumental record that was coming out of Japan in the early 80s – music that's spare and minimal, but quite different than any sort of similar projects from other parts of the globe! Satoshi Ashikawa creates sounds in ways that resonate both with the ancient and contemporary, organic and urban, at a level that's very slow-building and striking in its careful use of sound and space – served up here on instrumentation that includes vibes from Midori Takada, piano from Tomoko Sono, and harp from Yuko Utsumi – always tuneful, but in ways that are more like a natural progression of sound than conventional music. Titles include "Prelude", "Still Park", "Still Sky", "Wrinkle", and "Image Under The Tree". LP, Vinyl record album

AssociationAssociation ... LP
Warner, 1969. Sealed Gatefold ... $3.99
Really great work by The Association – a back-to-basics effort that has the group handling most of the instrumentation themselves, in a way that often gives the set a surprisingly intimate feel! Sure, these are the guys who virtually invented candy-coated Sunshine Pop – but they're also a heck of a great group at the core, and move here into some of the looser, more relaxed modes of the Warner Brothers scene at the time – a setting that really helps them bring a hell of a lot of personality to the music. Harmony vocals still soar out beautifully when needed, and the arrangements and songwriting show a lot more signs of their association with the hip LA scene of the 60s – a maturation that really pushes their sound forward in a wonderful way. Titles include "Broccoli", "The Nest", "Love Affair", "Boy On the Mountain", "Under Branches", "Goodbye Forever", and "Yes I Will". LP, Vinyl record album

Valiant, 1966. Near Mint- ... $7.99
An aptly-titled album, as it sprung the genius of The Association fully onto the world – and forever changed the rules for dreamy vocal pop music! The album's a wonderful blend of sweet harmonies, LA production, and the kind of slightly-trippy song stylings you already know from The Association's biggest hits. However, the album's also filled with great little songs that you probably haven't heard before – which makes it an even bigger treat, kind of like stumbling upon a treasure box of unheard musical gems that you've been looking for your entire life! Titles include "Songs In The Wind", "Memories Of You", "No Fair At All", "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies", and "Another Time Another Place". LP, Vinyl record album

Wah Wah (Spain), 1976. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99
Sublime sounds from this legendary Spanish prog trio of the 70s – a record that's even more fully-formed than their excellent debut – and done with more sophisticated recording quality too! The album has a bit of vocals at some points – mostly wordless, but occasionally with lyrics – yet as before, the focus is on the blinding interplay between the musicians – guitarist Eduardo Niebla, drummer Joan Punyet, and keyboardist Benet Noguer – who plays organ, piano, melotron, and even a bit of moog! The group's also got a bassist this time around – which propels the songs even more strongly – on titles that include "Dia Perfecto", "Cucutila", and "Intencion" – plus a side-long reworking of "El Principo Del Fin" from the group's first album. Pro Musica/Svart (Finland), 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $24.99
Very long and extended jamming work from Ave Rock – a hip Argentine combo from the early 70s, and one that rivals the bigger progressive greats of the European scene at the time! Ave Rock are heavy on the keyboard and guitar lines here – really stretching out with a fluid, well-played approach that's sometimes spacey, but often much more jamming, and really focused on the technical details. Tracks have vocals, but also some very extended instrumental parts – and titles include "Ausencia", "Viva Belgica", "Dejenme Seguir", and "Gritos". LP, Vinyl record album

Daniel BachmanJesus I'm A Sinner ... LP
Tompkins Square, 2013. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Mindbending work from guitarist Daniel Bachman – a player who may well be the John Fahey of the contemporary acoustic generation! Daniel works here mostly in a solo mode – with just a bit of banjo and fiddle at two points on the record – but his richly chromatic approach to the strings of the guitar unlock a whole world of color and sound – a mode that, at one level is rooted in older acoustic traditions – but at another is richly inventive, especially in the way that Bachman unlocks some metallic elements in the strings that bring a sharp edge to his music. Titles include "Jesus I'm A Sinner", "Variation On The Goose Chase", "Blenheim", "Leaving Istanbul 4am", and "Under The Shade Of The Trees". (Folk/Country, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Maybe not the first album from the legendary Band – but a record in which the group get everything completely right all the way through – and sparkle with that special sound that continues to influence generations of music makers, and music lovers! All the great elements the group were bringing to their work with Bob Dylan are in place here – but the focus is completely different, with this warm glow that really fits the vocals of Levon Helm, and a sense of unified vision that makes it really hard to even come up with a match for the energy of the group on this album. The great John Simon adds a few special touches to the overall sound – and titles include "Rockin Chair", "Across The Great Divide", "When You Awake", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Look Out Cleveland", and "King Harvest". Beach BoysPet Sounds (mono & stereo mixes) ... CD
Capitol, 1966. Used ... $4.99
One of the greatest records of all time – and don't you forget it! Despite the countless lines of type that have been written about this record, nothing does it full justice like an all-through listen – something we're reminded of every time we put this one on the turntable, which is a heck of a lot over the years! Brian Wilson busted his ass making this little gem – and the rest of the world, and the band, were never the same again – awash in harmonies that most other groups tried to match, set to themes of young loss, longing, and frustration that really mark an emotional development – not just in the Beach Boys, but in pop music in general. And although some of the tracks are ones you've heard a million times on oldies stations, they somehow resonate together much more strongly here – taking on new meaning as the smaller elements of each song come into constellation with each other – creating a complicated tapestry of feelings set to near-godlike orchestrations. Titles include "God Only Knows", "Caroline No", "Pet Sounds", "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", and "You Still Believe In Me". Includes Mono and Stereo mixes of the whole album! CD

Pure brilliance from start to finish – especially the second side of the record, which has a continuous run of tunes that's very unique – and still completely sublime all these many years later! The album shows the fracturing ideas of the group, but crafted together with a unity you won't find on The White Album or Let It Be – still a way of making it all gel together beautifully, as the fab four stretch their wings to find new ways of being. A double-helping of Chuck Berry brilliance from his early years on Chess Records – music that always has way way more to offer than you might think! Sure, some of Chuck's hits are very familiar – and sure, the man could later be a bit of a parody of himself – but there's no denying the power of this early material, and the revolutionary way Chuck had of playing guitar – rooted in blues, paving the way to rock, and also opening the door to lots more funky soul in years to come! ✨✧ Big Star#1 Record (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Ardent/Craft, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
The amazing first album from Big Star – a set that came out of nowhere, made hardly a ripple on the charts, yet went onto crash in big waves of sound for generations to come! The style here is unlike thing else before – hardly what you'd expect from the group's Memphis roots or Alex Chilton's previous performances – yet the group's music has become a generation-defining sound in the way it blends southern inflections with harder rock influences, and a lean, gritty quality that's arguably in a late 70s space between punk and power pop. Every element is wonderful – guitars that are powerful, but never indulgent – vocals that are moving, but never overly emotive – and a balance between sensitive and searing moments that even The Replacements could never hope to match. A landmark all the way through – with tracks that include "Feel", "Ballad Of El Goodo", "In The Street", "The India Song", "When My Baby's Beside Me", "Give Me Another Chance", "Don't Lie To Me", "Thirteen", "Watch The Sunrise", and "Try Again". A beautiful little tribute to the genius of Hall & Oates – one that has us liking their tunes even more than before! Somehow, The Bird & The Bee are a perfect fit for this music – and their stripped-down renditions of these classics really works wonderfully – recasting the work of Daryl and John in a whole new way, yet still holding onto the best older elements of the songs, too! Inara George's vocals are definitely a change from the male duo – but they have this charm that's undeniable – and the spare keyboards and guitar used on most of the backings get at the best studio techniques of the original pair, yet with some nice retro 80s elements too. An album that's maybe best remembered for its connection with the world of the young Elton John – as the man himself plays piano on the record, and also contributed a number of songs – but a set that's also a standout achievement from sisters Doreen and Irene Chanter! The duo are British, but sing together in a way that clearly draws a lot of inspiration from southern soul – that version of the music that you'd find refracted through a British prism on records like Honky Chateau or Tumbleweed Connection – but coming through nicely in the girls' own songs too. Production is great – nicely understated, even when full – and the main focus is on the vocals, which are surprisingly soulful throughout. Titles include "Take Me To The Pilot", "Border Song", "Leaving The Ghetto", "Country Comfort", "All God's Children Got Soul", "One More Time", "Take The World", "Bad Side Of The Moon", and a cool cover of "Gimme Shelter" that's almost got a Motown vibe! Biting TonguesLive It Up ... LP
New Hormones/Cache Cache (UK), 1982. New Copy ... $22.99
Great early work from Biting Tongues – a group who gave Factory Records a few great singles in the mid 80s, but who are heard here a few years before – on an album that was only issued on cassette at the time! We've always loved these guys – and they've got a way of mixing the punk/funk of A Certain Ratio with some of the moodier currents of the Manchester scene – touched also by lots of great lines on trumpet and tenor sax, the latter of which almost gives their music some Blurt-like qualities! Yet the rhythms also move more in the cold wave mode – which mixes with the horns and live percussion to create a very cool blend – on titles that include "Denture Beach", "Read This", "Unhook That Boy", "Forty Three", "Evening State", "Or With Eyes Closed", and "Reflector".
