✨✧ BandMusic From Big Pink ... LP
Capitol, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
The landmark first album from The Band – and along with the follow-up, it's among the greatest records of its time – which is all the more astounding given how independent of late 60s trends it is! Each member of The Band brings such inimitable textures – Garth Hudson's imposing organ grooves, Richard Manuel's aching tenor vocals, Rick Danko's voice and distinctive bass lines, Levon Helm's behind-the-beat drumming and the country wisdom of his voice, Robertson's guitar mastery – this really was THE Band. Includes "Tears Of Rage", "In A Station", "The Weight", "Long Black Veil", "Chest Fever", "Lonesome Suzie", "This Wheels On Fire", "I Shall Be Released" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

BGM (Takayuki Shiraishi)Back Ground Music ... LP
Studio Mule (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... $31.99
A set that's hardly background at all – as the tracks here have a lively, forward sort of energy that reminds us of our favorite post-punk experiments from the British and German scenes at the start of the 70s – done with a darkness that really resonates with the album's cover image too! There's hardly any vocals at all on the songs – other than muted, abstracted lyrics that are buried under brooding basslines, echoey drums, and fuzzy work on guitar and keyboards – all with a moody Factory Records sort of vibe – and by that, we mean Factory circa 1980, not the later sunnier years. Titles include "Neo Dancer", "And", "Repeat", "Membership Card", "Romantic Romance", and "Recovery Room". LP, Vinyl record album

ChasePure Music/Chase ... CD
Epic/Vocalion (UK), 1971/1974. New Copy ... $18.99
A pair of albums from Chase – one of the hippest jazz rock combos of the 70s! The self-titled Chase album first burned onto the market in 1971 – and it's a great distillation of a groove that was bubbling around in various other segments at the time – some of the tighter big band rhythms of the late 60s, as you might find in the work of Maynard Ferguson or Woody Herman – mixed with the hipper rhythms from the rockish underground, particularly in the work of Blood Sweat & Tears or Chicago. Chase is a fair bit jazzier than both of those groups – as they often put the horns more upfront than the vocals – although most numbers do have some sort of vocals as well. Instrumentation is heavy on trumpets – which come together in blasting, blaring groove, even despite the smaller size of the combo – and Phil Porter lays down some great keyboard lines that really help some of the best tracks cook nicely. Titles include "Handbags & Gladrags", "Livin In Heat", "Open Up Wide", "Hello Groceries", "Boys & Girls Together", and "Invitation To A River". Ennea is a jazz rock classic that still sounds pretty darn tasty today – forged on the heels of Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears, but with a sound that's leaner and meaner! The group's led by trumpeter Bill Chase – hence their name – and features lead vocals by GG Shinn and Terry Richards, both in a style that's got the same blue-eyed jazz soul overtones as that used by the groups mentioned above. The real strength of the tracks, though, is their jazzy backings – horn-heavy, as you'd expect, and hitting some great riffs and licks on the album's side-long title "suite", which features many instrumental passages. Titles include "Hades", "Aphrodite (parts 1 & 2)", "Zeus", "Poseidon", "Cronus", "It Won't Be Long", "I Can Feel It", and "Night". CD
(Hybrid Super Audio CD pressing – also works on standard CD players!)

Dinosaur L (Arthur Russell)24 24 Music ... CD
Sleeping Bag, 1981. Used ... $7.99
An incredible full album from Dinosaur L – the legendary New York dancefloor project of Arthur Russell! The group's a punky, funky, chunky amalgam of bass thumping, guitar riffing, keyboard filling, and sax honking – all very much in the spirit of Russell's best quirky club work of the time, but with the added sound here of a more expanded approach – one that takes the tunes in a whole new territory than the more famous 12" singles! The tracks on the original set were simply numbered – "1", "2", "3", and so on – and come across almost as free-jamming instrumentals – but this reissue appends the songs with their 12" titles, so "#1" gets parenthetically entitled "You're Gonna Be Clean On Your Bean" and "#5" as "Go Bang!", plus this disc adds several 12" versions that were not on the original LP release, like Francois K's mix of 'Go Bang!" and Larry Levan's mix of "In The Corn Belt". Totally great stuff – as experimental as it is funky! (Soul, Rock) CD

Brian EnoAmbient 1 – Music For Airports ... LP
EG, 1978. Near Mint- ... $49.99
A landmark moment – both for Brian Eno, and for experimental music in general! Although Eno began his solo run with some searing, guitar-heavy records that were even wilder than his early work with Roxy Music – he also began experimenting with more sensitive aspects of sound on albums like Another Green World and Before & After Science – an approach he takes here to the farthest degree, by opening up himself and creating a whole new genre of ambient music in the process! Gone are the raspy, sometimes nasty vocals – and in their place is virtually nothing – just beautifully open music that uses scores that are somewhat cyclical – but at a pace that's very different than the minimalism of the period – and maybe even more minimal too. The record features four long tracks, one with piano by Robert Wyatt – really beautiful stuff, like some strange dark sonic crystal that fell out of the skies years ago, and which still remains a mystery to all ears that stumble upon it! Brian EnoDiscreet Music (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Obscure/Astralwerks, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! LP, Vinyl record album

EG/Astralwerks, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A compilation LP of sorts – though at the time of its release most of this material had not been heard in this form! The album's more or less part of the "Ambient" series Eno had started that year with Music For Airports – and it's presented with similarly simple, elegant packaging – a cool divergence from the more striking Eno of a few years before. The set is made up of various bits, record either exclusively for film use, or that in one way or another found their way into films – and contains mostly short tunes, some thematic, others purely sonic wallpaper, but always compelling! 18 tracks, including "M386", "Aragon", "Two Rapid Formations", "Slow Water", "Sparrowfall", "Evenings In Dense Fog", "A Measured Room", "Strange Light", and "Final Sunset". ✨✧ Ron Geesin & Rogers WatersMusic From The Body ... LP
Harvest (UK), 1970. Near Mint- ... $39.99
An incredibly tripped-out record – of the sort we're stunned was ever recorded for a major! The work's a side project of Roger Waters from Pink Floyd, done in collaboration with Ron Geesin for a film directed by Roy Battersby – and it's a shifting landscape of short experimental tracks, easily drifting back and forth between off-kilter instrumental numbers to sing-songy vocal ones that are far madder than Syd Barrett's work ever was. There's some nice folksy touches that sit by the tripped-out guitar work – and overall, the album's relatively introspective, especially for the setting, with less of the guitar-churning sound than you'd expect from Floyd at this point! Titles include "Body Transport", "Embryonic Womb Walk", "Give Birth To A Smile", "Chain Of Life", "Dance Of The Red Corpuscles", "Our Song", and "Bridge Passage For Three Plastic Teeth". Rhino, 1991. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $34.99
Great music from the second season of Twin Peaks – and a continuing illustration of the power of Angelo Baldamenti's music for the show! The strength of these simple themes and tunes is clear right from the get-go – as Angelo serves things up in a mode that's subtle, but still filled with the dark mystery that made the show so great – and all these many years later, there's a surprisingly timeless feel to the sound of the work, given that Baldamenti chose to use better keyboards and piano than the usual early 90s styles – plus a fair bit of acoustic instrumentation with a jazzy undercurrent as well. The package is a bit heavier on photos than notes, so we're not sure of the exact placement of all these cuts – but we can say that the CD features 22 tracks that include "Shelly", "Love Theme Intro", "I'm Hurt Bad", "Cop Beat", "Barbershop", "Harold's Theme", and "Packard's Vibration". Verve, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $29.99
A very tripped-out set of meditation music – issued by Verve in the late 60s, and arguably even more spacey and atmospheric than some of Tony Scott's similar records for the label at the time! Malachi is actually John Morgan Newbern – working here in a spare setting to capture the "evening vibrations" of a single night in 1966 – served up through instrumentation that includes low-end percussion, acoustic guitar, and a fair bit of Jew's harp – played by Steve Cunningham (of Red Crayola fame), but drifting out slowly over the longer tracks in the set. The album's an early example of the extremes that 60s labels used to address the growing interest in Eastern ideals at the time – and it's much less commercial than some of the more gimmicky sessions of the decade. Titles include "Wednesday – Second", "Wednesday – Sixth", "Wednesday – Fourth", "Wednesday – Fifth", and "Wednesday – Eighth". LP, Vinyl record album

Richmond/Trading Places (UK), 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Larry Page was a big figure in the British music scene of the 60s – manager of the Kinks, and a growing force in record production too – so much so, he decided to put himself in the limelight as the leader of this all-instrumental set of songs by his most famous group! Ray Davies arranged all the tunes, and the readings follow pretty closely to the structure of original Kinks tunes – but shift things up with the instruments used – adding in more horns, shifting a keyboard for a guitar, or vice versa – and filling up the space in the middle to cover up the absence of the vocals! The set is also noteworthy for a bit of guitar by a young Jimmy Page – and titles include "One Fine Day", "Come On Now", "Tired Of Waiting For You", "Don't Ever Change", "You Really Got Me", "Just Can't Go To Sleep", "Everybody's Gonna Be Happy", and "All Day & All Of The Night". EG, 1974. Near Mint- ... $49.99
The fourth album from Roxy Music – and quite possibly the best to date! The album has the group moving strongly past the Eno years, into a tighter framework that still contains many of the darker themes of earlier records. Ferry's lead vocals are incredibly majestic – rising to heights to match the European greats of years past who were his inspiration – and the group's tight blend of reeds, guitar, and moody keyboards gives the whole album an off-kilter sense of instrumentation that really sets it apart from the pack. There's an artfulness here that's never overdone, and the whole thing comes together with a magic that's impossible to describe, but which is Roxy at their best. Cameo/Abkco, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $18.99 21.99
A fantastic early side of work from 70s superstar Bob Seger – and one that comes as quite a surprise, compared to his hits! This early material is really raw, gritty, and definitely shows Bob's roots in the same Detroit scene that was changing the worlds of both soul and rock in the late 60s – often with groups that had an equal emphasis on both sides of the spectrum! In fact, there's a surprisingly strong current of soul that runs through many of these cuts – a romping energy that really matches the freakier, fuzzier touches of the instrumentation – all with results that will have you maybe thinking about Bob in a whole new way. Some of the modes recall the best early Mitch Ryder material, but often with a trippier sort of vibe – and although the tracks came out as singles on the Cameo label in the mid 60s, this is the first full album ever issued of the material. Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 5CD ... $39.99
The northern side of the UK scene finally gets its due – all with a sound that's a lot more exciting than the spare landscape pictured on the cover! The work is all from Scotland, and it's hardly the music of kilts and bagpipes – because nearly all these tracks had a huge influence on the British music scene down south – the kind of tracks that won over listeners on the John Peel Show, got rave reviews in NME and Melody Maker, and forever helped change the style at just about every step of the way from the punk years onwards! The package is a huge treasure trove of great sounds – as musically fantastic as it is a geographical marker – and honestly, we had no idea that so many of these artists were Scottish – as we usually just think of a few key 80s groups when we try to picture that scene. Instead, the book-like package has plenty of knowledge, notes, and pictures to offer – in support of 115 tracks by artists who run the gamut from early punk, through post-punk, power pop, nouveau psych, C86 charmers, Creation Records fuzz, and some of the new grooves that exploded at the end of the 80s. Includes work by The Zips, Skids, Subs, PVC, Rezillos, Jesus & Mary Chain, Del Amitri, Primal Scream, Meat Whiplash, Blood Uncles, Pastels, Altered Images, Prats, Josef K, Cocteau Twins, The Orchids, Vaselines, Shamen, Mackenzies, Baby Lemonade, Bachelor Pad, Dog Faced Hermans, Cindytalk, Strawberry Switchblade, Aztec Camera, Biff Bang Pow, Boots For Dancing, Fire Engines, Thomas Leer, The Associates, Scars, TV 21, Ales Fergusson, Jasmine Minks, and lots lots more! Omni (Australia), 1950s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
A fantastic collection of offbeat country music songs from the postwar years – tunes that begin during the Korean War, end during Vietnam, and embrace a lot of Cold War anxiety in between! As with other titles from this great label – like the Hillbillies In Hell series – there's a great theme at the core, with so many different varieties of songs that we're amazed at how much the compilers were able to dig up! You'll probably recognize a few of these, but most of the tunes are from a pretty deep dig – and even longtime country freaks like ourselves are hearing most of these for the first time. Titles include "Freedom Monkey" by Doc Williams, "Bearded Bandit Of Cuba" by Art & Glenda Davis, "Fallout" by Red Castle, "Ballad Of Two Brothers" by Autry Inman, "Little Boy Soldier" by Wanda Jackson, "Crazy Vietnam War" by Stringbean, "Congratulations" by Arlene Harden, "The Patriot" by Marie Roberson, "The Craziest War Of The Universe" by Jefferson County Bluegrass Boys, and "I'm No Communist" by Grandpa Jones. Svart (Finland), 1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $14.99
Finland's been giving us some great funk and soul sounds in recent years, but that legacy stretches back much longer than we might have guessed – to a point that includes all these groovy disco and electronic dance tracks from the 80s! The set's a follow-up to the Satan In Love compilation, which charted similar territory – but this one moves more into a world that's influenced by some of the electro pop modes that were coming out of the UK in the early 80s, with maybe a touch of the European disco of the decade before – especially in the style of some of the female singers here, who could just as easily have been working with Munich Machine, or some of the other German and Italian groups. Lyrics are mostly in Finnish, but the keyboards, drum machines, and basslines are universal – on titles that include "Jossakin Jos Halaut" by Eini, "Jupiter" by Jori Sivonen, "Big & Beautiful" by Visual, "Night Is Like Magic" by Biba, "Hi Jacker" by Buffalo Soldier, "Sormus" by Clifters, "Grandmaster Klaus" by Mad Lindell, "Nuori Inka" by Jarmo Juhani, "Robotin USA" by Vaarallinen Mutanti, "Cold War On The Rocks" by Step On The Other Side, and "Tahdenlento" by Mika Sundqvist. Soul Jazz (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... $32.99
A totally great look at the explosion of electronic sounds in German music during the 70s – a set that goes way past more familiar Krautrock territory, to bring together elements from the artier side of the spectrum too, and even run up to some of the first great moments of the German new wave! Soul Jazz have been down this path before, but this time they're maybe following the road a little farther – as the track selection is especially great, and has a way of really illuminating the special sound of this generation, even if you already know some of the music! There's a few more meditative moments than on previous volumes, mixed with some tuneful tracks, funky numbers, and even a few subtle rockers – all laid out in a way that really makes the songs sound great together as a whole. Titles include "Dronz" by Novalis, "Wide Open Space Machine" by Klaus Weiss, "Deutscher Wald" by Deutsche Wertarbeit, "I'll Be Your Singer You'll Be My Song" by AR & Machines, "The Brain Of Oskar Panizza" by Michael Bundt, "And The Waters Opened" by Between, "White Overalls" by La Dusseldorf, "Tanz Der Vogel In Den Winden" by Achim Reichel, "Hollywood" by Cluster, "Die Haut Der Frau" by Pyrolator, and "Passage" by Streetmark. B- Music/Finders Keepers, Late 60s. Used ... $19.99
The first-ever release of some incredible funky folk tunes from vocalist Susan Christie – originally recorded as demos in the years before her work at Columbia Records, and arguably even better than those classic singles! Backings here are by John Hill, who inflects Susan's folksy style with a heavier undercurrent – one that's subtly funky at the best moments, and which also pushes fuller strings and more baroque instrumentation into the mix – all in a way that almost sounds like David Axlerod might, had he started making folk records! Titles include the amazing 9 minute "Yesterday, Where's My Mind" – a funky mini-suite that's worth the price of the record alone – plus "Paint A Lady", "Rainy Day", "Ghost Riders In The Sky", "Echo In Your Mind", "When Love Comes", and "For The Love Of A Soldier". Brother Music (Denmark), 1981. New Copy ... $15.99
The first album from Laid Back – the Danish duo who would soon dominate the world of breakdance with their electro-pop groove! This set has Laid Back sounding maybe a bit more rock at the core, but still with plenty of electronic touches around the edge – maybe a catchier version of DAF in the mid 80s, or a group that's traveling in the same pop territory as Peter Schilling or Nena – right down to their use of English language lyrics in the set! Those lyrics often have a nice accent, though – which also keeps things interesting – on titles that include "Maybe I'm Crazy", "China Girl", "Keep On Moving", "Take Me Home", "Roger", "Night Train Boogie", and "Man From The Moon". CD features a number of bonus tracks from singles – including "Walk On", "New Feeling", and some other mixes too. (Soul, Rock) CD

Terry Riley's masterpiece, and an enduring classic that never grows old – and which never lapses into the hippy dippyness of some of his other work! The piece features 53 short musical passages, played in an order defined by the players, in minimal repetition, moving in and out of phase synchronicity – ever shifting, turning, and drifting – all to create a remarkable tapestry of sound, texture, and melody. This recording of the work is still the best, and it was produced with excellent care by David Behrman, as part of Columbia's great "music of our time" series. Sarolta ZalatnaySarolta Zalatnay ... CD
B- Music/Finders Keepers, 1970s. Used ... $13.99
Fuzzy, funky, and freaky – some really incredible work from Hungarian rocker Sarolta Zalatnay – an artist with a groove that's a lot easier to get than her name! The work here was recorded in collaboration with 70s groups Locomitiv GT, Metro, Omega, and Skorpio – all of whom are pretty darn funky at times – with an approach that mixes heavy drums, rumbling bass, and lots of fuzzy guitars – making for a fair bit of break-heavy tracks on the set. Topped with Sarolta's vocals, the sound is somewhere between Betty Davis on her classic Just Sunshine albums and Gal Costa at the end of the 60s – but also a fair bit more exotic too, given the Hungarian language, and the use of Eastern phrasing on some of the tunes. And if you're scratching your head because you've never heard of Zalatnay before, don't worry – because the package features some great notes on her sordid career from the 70s onward – even though the music alone here should be more than enough to win you over! Titles include "Ne Hidd El", "Itt A Nyar", "Egyser", "Rogos Uton", "Zold Borostyan", "Munanyag Almok", "The Freak", "Move Over", "Oh Ha Milliomos Lennek", and "Fekete Beat". CD

An excellent mix of some of the best lost folk funk, tripped out psychedelia, 60s & 70s material from the global underground from Finders Keepers – but far cooler than a mere sampler – an aurally exciting blend of the material courtesy of the Gaslamp Killer! For this excellent set, eclectic LA DJ guru Gaslamp Killer was given the keys to the Finders Keepers vaults to craft an evocative set of his own, from the sounds found on the first 20 Finders Keepers releases. Turkish rock from Ersen, wild soundtrack grooves from Valerie & Her Week Of Wonders composer Lubos Fiser, instrumental French funk from Jean Claude Vannier, and so much more! All Killer has 12 tracks that are each expertly blended suites of Finders Keepers releases, including "The Sermon" by Lubos Fiser, "Les Garde Volent Au Secours Du Roi" and more by Jean Claude Vannier, "Dance Of The Vampires" by Vampires Of Dartmoore, "Gunese Don Cicegim" by Ersen, "Les Electroniciens" by Bruno Spoerri, "Zeytinyagi" by Mustafa Ozkent, "Europa" by by Susan Christie and more. Massively heavy sounds from A Bolha – a Brazilian group who were previously known as The Bubbles, and backed up Gal Costa during the Tropicalia years – but who work here in a fuzzy, bassy groove that's totally great – definitely an heir to the headier sounds of the UK scene at the start of the 70s! The guitars are definitely in full force here, but the basslines drive things along strongly too – echoing some of the Peruvian sounds of the time, but with a bit more Brazilian sophistication – and definitely a musical echo of lessons learned during Tropicalia, even though the set's a fully instrumental one. Finders Keepers (UK), 1971. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A strange, eerie psychedelia and prog steeped soundtrack to the Jean Rollins French vampire film Le Frisson Des Vampires – played by the group Acanthus – a great little set of evocative, stripped down macabre instrumentals and trippy bits of dialogue! Finders Keepers describes the sound by comparing it to lynchpin combos of early prog as affected by "a 1000 year old acid infused blood transfusion", and guess what – that's perfect! Guitar melodies spun very loosely and eerily rolling along with improved bits and creepy sound sound effects – but it never veers into shlocky horror movie music, it's psych-steeped instrumental rock, played in a spooky style. The music is great, and the bits of dialogue (in English) is totally priceless! The girls have this really great look on the back – kind of flower power, but with a bit more charm – a quality that comes through in the music, with is often more garagey than trippy – but which also has a way of putting forth female vocals and honest ideas that might not flourish this strongly for similar groups until the post-punk years. That approach makes the whole thing a truly timeless collection of tracks – of the sort that maybe resonate more strongly today than they did back in the 60s. Terry Allen has always been one of the most enigmatic figures in Texas music – but the work included here might well be some of his most compelling – even if it is a bit far from the straighter country of his start! Allen's always been a very narrative songwriter – and here, he takes that form one further – in a series of radio plays and longer audio narratives, most of which intersperse sung passages with spoken bits, sound effects, and beautiful music as well! These aren't any sort of sleepy, too-prosaic works – but instead, the sort of material that's always had us link Allen's music with the books of Barry Gifford or Barry Hannah – instantly evocative, and with a vision for storytelling that's completely captivating – a journey begun on his Juarez album, and really extended here. The special package features the first vinyl appearance of a few of these pieces – and 3CDs of music that contain the complete "Pedal Steel", "Torso Hell", "Bleeder", "Dugout", and "Reunion (A Return To Juarez)". Overlooked later work from America – not the huge AM radio hits from the time when the group was a trio, and produced by George Martin – but instead, material from a point when they'd trimmed down to a duo, and really found a great way to move their music forward! The approach here still has all the harmonic interplay of before, and as the albums move on, older AOR modes get shed for some slightly more contemporary styles – but still with that kind of golden glow that always made the America approach a lot stronger than most of their contemporaries! Songs are nicely understated, as is the production – and if, like us, you're a fan of the group with a love that goes way deeper than the hits, then you'll find plenty to love here. A massive amount of early work by The Animals – brought together in one overstuffed package with some unreleased tracks as well! The group here have a great rough sound – much more bluesy than in later years, which turns out to be a perfect setting for the young Eric Burdon – whose vocals soar out wonderfully over a mix of original tunes and remakes of American classics by folks like Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, Sam Cooke, Bo Diddley, and others! Producer Mickie Most really knows how to keep the right sort of edge on the tunes – lots of raw power in the instrumentation, especially the Hammond and guitar – and a stark, dark quality to Eric's vocals that went onto become the stuff of legend. Vangelis composed the whole set – as an extended piece based on the Apocalypse of St John – and the album was recorded in Paris, away from their native Greece – in a time of political unrest and cultural upheaval that's clearly referenced in the music! There's a really wide array of textures and moods on the set – from sinister to soft, freaky to peaceful, all laid out beautifully with a sense of poetry and power that few other groups could match! Irene Pappas performs a recitation, and also gives some sexy sounds on the classic "Infinity" – and other tunes include "The System", "Babylon", "Loud Loud Loud", "The Four Horsemen", "The Seventh Seal", "Aegian Sea", "The Marching Beast", "Capture Of The Beast", "Altamont", "Seven Trumpets", and "Hic Et Nunc". Ars NovaSunshine & Shadows ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good ... $24.99
The second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". LP, Vinyl record album

AssociationAssociation ... LP
Warner, 1969. Sealed Gatefold ... $7.99
Really great work by The Association – a back-to-basics effort that has the group handling most of the instrumentation themselves, in a way that often gives the set a surprisingly intimate feel! Sure, these are the guys who virtually invented candy-coated Sunshine Pop – but they're also a heck of a great group at the core, and move here into some of the looser, more relaxed modes of the Warner Brothers scene at the time – a setting that really helps them bring a hell of a lot of personality to the music. Harmony vocals still soar out beautifully when needed, and the arrangements and songwriting show a lot more signs of their association with the hip LA scene of the 60s – a maturation that really pushes their sound forward in a wonderful way. Titles include "Broccoli", "The Nest", "Love Affair", "Boy On the Mountain", "Under Branches", "Goodbye Forever", and "Yes I Will". LP, Vinyl record album

Valiant, 1966. Very Good+ ... $4.99
An aptly-titled album, as it sprung the genius of The Association fully onto the world – and forever changed the rules for dreamy vocal pop music! The album's a wonderful blend of sweet harmonies, LA production, and the kind of slightly-trippy song stylings you already know from The Association's biggest hits. However, the album's also filled with great little songs that you probably haven't heard before – which makes it an even bigger treat, kind of like stumbling upon a treasure box of unheard musical gems that you've been looking for your entire life! Titles include "Songs In The Wind", "Memories Of You", "No Fair At All", "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies", and "Another Time Another Place". LP, Vinyl record album

Association/Charles FoxGoodbye Columbus – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Warner, 1969. Sealed ... $4.99
A groovy groovy soundtrack that contains one of the Association's greatest songs! "Goodbye Columbus" may not be as famous as some of their bigger hits – but we love it to death, and it's the kind of catchy groover they'll find us singing in the coffin long after we've passed away! The soundtrack features the vocal version of the track – as well as some other vocal numbers like "It's Gotta Be Real" and "So Kind To Me". Plus, the soundtrack's also got some excellent instrumental numbers that are in the best spirit of the group's music – with loads of dreamy arrangements and light lilting pop melodies. Tunes include "Love Has A Way", "A Moment To Share", "A Time For Love", and "How Will I Know You?". LP, Vinyl record album

New Promotion/Wah Wah (Spain), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
The debut album by an obscure Spanish progressive trio from the 70s – but one who hit the highest heights of some of their British or Italian counterparts of the time! The album features one long track, with no vocals at all – which leaves plenty of room for insane interplay between bold drums, fuzzy guitar, and some especially wicked keyboard lines from Francisco Ortega – clearly played by a musician who can handle his chops in a more sophisticated setting, but can also rock out with the best! The whole thing's great – the album-length "El Principio Del Fin" – and this special edition comes with a large booklet, and a bonus CD with an alternate mix of the album! LP, Vinyl record album

Wah Wah (Spain), 1976. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99
Sublime sounds from this legendary Spanish prog trio of the 70s – a record that's even more fully-formed than their excellent debut – and done with more sophisticated recording quality too! The album has a bit of vocals at some points – mostly wordless, but occasionally with lyrics – yet as before, the focus is on the blinding interplay between the musicians – guitarist Eduardo Niebla, drummer Joan Punyet, and keyboardist Benet Noguer – who plays organ, piano, melotron, and even a bit of moog! The group's also got a bassist this time around – which propels the songs even more strongly – on titles that include "Dia Perfecto", "Cucutila", and "Intencion" – plus a side-long reworking of "El Principo Del Fin" from the group's first album. Very long and extended jamming work from Ave Rock – a hip Argentine combo from the early 70s, and one that rivals the bigger progressive greats of the European scene at the time! Ave Rock are heavy on the keyboard and guitar lines here – really stretching out with a fluid, well-played approach that's sometimes spacey, but often much more jamming, and really focused on the technical details. Tracks have vocals, but also some very extended instrumental parts – and titles include "Ausencia", "Viva Belgica", "Dejenme Seguir", and "Gritos". LP, Vinyl record album

Daniel BachmanJesus I'm A Sinner ... LP
Tompkins Square, 2013. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Mindbending work from guitarist Daniel Bachman – a player who may well be the John Fahey of the contemporary acoustic generation! Daniel works here mostly in a solo mode – with just a bit of banjo and fiddle at two points on the record – but his richly chromatic approach to the strings of the guitar unlock a whole world of color and sound – a mode that, at one level is rooted in older acoustic traditions – but at another is richly inventive, especially in the way that Bachman unlocks some metallic elements in the strings that bring a sharp edge to his music. Titles include "Jesus I'm A Sinner", "Variation On The Goose Chase", "Blenheim", "Leaving Istanbul 4am", and "Under The Shade Of The Trees". (Folk/Country, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Maybe not the first album from the legendary Band – but a record in which the group get everything completely right all the way through – and sparkle with that special sound that continues to influence generations of music makers, and music lovers! All the great elements the group were bringing to their work with Bob Dylan are in place here – but the focus is completely different, with this warm glow that really fits the vocals of Levon Helm, and a sense of unified vision that makes it really hard to even come up with a match for the energy of the group on this album. The great John Simon adds a few special touches to the overall sound – and titles include "Rockin Chair", "Across The Great Divide", "When You Awake", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Look Out Cleveland", and "King Harvest". 2CD 50th anniversary edition features lots of bonus tracks – including 13 more early, alternate, and instrumental versions of tracks on the album – and a bonus 11 track Live At Woodstock 1969 set, with original rough mixes of tunes that include "I Shall Be Released", "This Wheel's On Fire", "Long Black Veil", "Ain't No More Cane On The Brazos", "Tears Of Rage", "Chest Fever", and "We Can Talk". ✨✧ BeatlesBeatles Live At The BBC ... CD
Apple, Early 60s. Used 2 CDs ... $5.99
The Beatles live at the BBC – heard here in a host of rare recordings that were done between March 1962 and June 1965 – pulled from the vaults of the legendary radio station, and with a few cool dialogue bits too! The versions here were all played live on the air, and make for some much-needed alternate takes on the big hits by the Fab Four – and a few American numbers that really show the influence of other styles on their early sound. And since the recordings were done in a top-shelf studio, they're not muddy concert recordings – but actually feel more like some lost EMI studio material from the same period. 71 titles in all – including "Nothin Shakin", "The Hippy Hippy Shake", "Glad All Over", "Rock & Roll Music", "Ticket To Ride", "Ooh My Soul", "Don't Ever Change", "Slow Down", "Matchbox", "I Forgot To Remember To Forget", "The Honeymoon Song", "Lucille", "Can't Buy Me Love", "Taste Of Honey", "From Us To You", "I Got A Woman", "I'll Be On My Way", "Shot Of Rhythm & Blues", "Some Other Guy", "Soldier Of Love", and "Clarabella". An overstuffed album of early greatness – served up with a classic image of the Fab Four on the cover! The tunes are a mix of Lennon/McCartney originals and American soul and rock numbers that are reinterpreted wonderfully by the group – in ways that perfectly show why, unlike most of their contemporaries, The Beatles weren't just trying for slavish imitation of American authenticity – and instead were already taking off with new ideas inspired by the music! Titles include "Please Please Me", "Love Me Do", "Misery", "Anna", "I Saw Her Standing There", "Boys", "Baby IT's You", "Do You Want To Know A Secret", "Twist & Shout", "A Taste Of Honey", and "Chains". Chess, 1958. Very Good ... $14.99
One dozen "berrys", all of them great – the fresh fruits of the labors of a young Chuck Berry – heard here at his raw, early best! The sound here is stunning – a version of Chuck that gets way past any oldies cliches – and which reminds us that at the start, his music was coming from the same Chess Records fount as Bo Diddley's riffing guitar and Muddy Waters' Chicago blues! The tunes all work together perfectly – and the familiar numbers fit in perfectly with overlooked gems that really make the album great – especially when Chuck's guitar is really given a chance to step out and solo. Big Star#1 Record ... LP
Ardent/Craft, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... On January 24, 2020
The amazing first album from Big Star – a set that came out of nowhere, made hardly a ripple on the charts, yet went onto crash in big waves of sound for generations to come! The style here is unlike thing else before – hardly what you'd expect from the group's Memphis roots or Alex Chilton's previous performances – yet the group's music has become a generation-defining sound in the way it blends southern inflections with harder rock influences, and a lean, gritty quality that's arguably in a late 70s space between punk and power pop. Every element is wonderful – guitars that are powerful, but never indulgent – vocals that are moving, but never overly emotive – and a balance between sensitive and searing moments that even The Replacements could never hope to match. A landmark all the way through – with tracks that include "Feel", "Ballad Of El Goodo", "In The Street", "The India Song", "When My Baby's Beside Me", "Give Me Another Chance", "Don't Lie To Me", "Thirteen", "Watch The Sunrise", and "Try Again". Page One/RPM (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
An album that's maybe best remembered for its connection with the world of the young Elton John – as the man himself plays piano on the record, and also contributed a number of songs – but a set that's also a standout achievement from sisters Doreen and Irene Chanter! The duo are British, but sing together in a way that clearly draws a lot of inspiration from southern soul – that version of the music that you'd find refracted through a British prism on records like Honky Chateau or Tumbleweed Connection – but coming through nicely in the girls' own songs too. Production is great – nicely understated, even when full – and the main focus is on the vocals, which are surprisingly soulful throughout. Titles include "Take Me To The Pilot", "Border Song", "Leaving The Ghetto", "Country Comfort", "All God's Children Got Soul", "One More Time", "Take The World", "Bad Side Of The Moon", and a cool cover of "Gimme Shelter" that's almost got a Motown vibe! Cilla BlackCilla/In My Life (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Parlophone/SFE (UK), 1965/1974. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
Two key albums from England's legendary Cilla Black – back to back in a single set, and with 26 bonus tracks too! First up is the amazing 1965 debut, Cilla – a record that maybe draws even more heavily on American soul music than some of Dusty Springfield's early work – all given some impeccable handling in the studio by arranger Johnny Scott, with a bit of help from Johnny Spence, and the record's producer, George Martin. Tunes are a great blend of American pop tracks and more off-beat numbers – done in that strangely syncopated mode that always provided a perfect counterpoint for Cilla's vocals – percolating the tracks wonderfully, and keeping things nice and clean, in a way that you don't always find in her later records. Titles include "Baby It's You", "Goin Out Of My Head", "Every Little Bit Hurts", "This Empty Place", "Come To Me", "Dancing In The Street", and "Whatcha Gonna Do Bout It". In My Life is the first set in the second chapter of Cilla Black's years with EMI – and her first record without George Martin at the production helm, too! The styles open up with a lot more contemporary 70s elements than some of Black's previous records – and there's a fair bit of keyboard work to create these warmer currents underneath Cilla's always-strong lead vocals. Titles include "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song", "Someone", "Daydreamer", "Everything I Own", "Baby We Can't Go Wrong", "Let Him In", "Like A Song", and "I Believed It All". 2CD set features lots of bonus tracks – including "Changes", "From The Inside", "Alfie Darling", "He Was A Writer", "I'll Still Love You", "Little Bit Of Understanding", "Heatwave", "Anything You Might Say", and the full mono mix of the debut album.
