Studio Mule (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... $19.99
A set that's hardly background at all – as the tracks here have a lively, forward sort of energy that reminds us of our favorite post-punk experiments from the British and German scenes at the start of the 70s – done with a darkness that really resonates with the album's cover image too! There's hardly any vocals at all on the songs – other than muted, abstracted lyrics that are buried under brooding basslines, echoey drums, and fuzzy work on guitar and keyboards – all with a moody Factory Records sort of vibe – and by that, we mean Factory circa 1980, not the later sunnier years. Titles include "Neo Dancer", "And", "Repeat", "Membership Card", "Romantic Romance", and "Recovery Room". LP, Vinyl record album

Bonniwell Music MachineBonniwell Music Machine (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warner/Real Gone, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 24.99
An amazing second chapter for The Music Machine – working here with the last name of leader Sean Bonniwell in their name – in a groove that's even weirder and wilder than before! The group take on an odd new sound here – still the heady brew of fuzz and Hammond on their original garagey recordings from LA – but with a mode that also really lets Bonniwell's offbeat character come to the forefront – both in the odd lyrics, and his stark presentation in the lead – a Sunset Strip sense of personality that's almost up there with Kim Fowley at times! The record's definitely one of the weirder, more edgey sides cut for Warner Brothers in the mid 60s – and titles include "Astrologically Incompatible", "Double Yellow Line", "The Trap", "Soul Love", "Bottom Of The Soul", "Me Myself & I", and "The Eagle Never Hunts The Fly". Bearsville, 1980. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $6.99
A great lost record of minimalist club – a set that we'd rank right up there with classics by Arthur Russell, Liquid Liquid, or some of the other most creative talents on the New York scene at the start of the 80s! As with work by those other two artists, there's an experimental approach here, but one that's very very groovy – mostly just spare beats, loose instrumentation, and other sounds – woven together in ways that certainly have strong post-punk inspiration, but which can also work perfectly on a dancefloor too! This is the kind of work that would be equally at home in the clubs and in a punk club too – the crossover you'd experience at the legendary Danceteria – and titles include "AEO (parts 1 & 2)", "Psyclone", "Nervous Breakdown", and "Spy Vs Spy". William EatonMusic By William Eaton ... LP
Morning Trip (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... About October 1, 2020 (delayed)
Beautifully mellow sounds from William Eaton – a 70s hippie-esque figure who wandered the desert in Arizona, and had a great talent for building his own stringed instruments! Here, William's working on an assortment of self-created guitars – one with 6 strings, one with 12, and one with a whopping 26 strings – dubbed an "elesion harmoniom", and sounding a lot more like a harp than anything else! The style of these tunes is spare and often spacey – played with sounds of nature in mind, often in ways that flow out in the breeze, and come back with a slight little echo. The home made ("private press", if you will) nature of the original album is expanded nicely here with additional notes and photos – and the CD features a total of 18 tracks in all. EdenMiasto Szczesliwiych Ludzi – 1976 Polish Library Music From The WFDIF Vaults ... CD
GAD (Poland), 1976. New Copy ... $16.99
A rare instrumental outing from Eden – a Polish trio that first began as a blues-rock group, then moved into progressive territory, before hitting a lighter folksier style – none of which really comes close to the vibe of this material from a rare sound library session in 1976! There's fusion elements in the mix at times – like tight drums and funky flute – but the record also has a wider palette of colors, too – quite a surprise, given that the group is just a trio – as they find ways to evoke some larger studio ensemble sounds from time to time. As with all the great titles in this series, there's detailed notes in both Polish and English – and titles include "Sen", "Dzungla", "Scherzo", "Eksperyment Nr 1", "Daleka Podroz", and "Male Inwencje". Brian EnoDiscreet Music ... CD
Virgin/EMI (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $10.99
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! CD

A compilation LP of sorts – though at the time of its release most of this material had not been heard in this form! The album's more or less part of the "Ambient" series Eno had started that year with Music For Airports – and it's presented with similarly simple, elegant packaging – a cool divergence from the more striking Eno of a few years before. The set is made up of various bits, record either exclusively for film use, or that in one way or another found their way into films – and contains mostly short tunes, some thematic, others purely sonic wallpaper, but always compelling! 18 tracks, including "M386", "Aragon", "Two Rapid Formations", "Slow Water", "Sparrowfall", "Evenings In Dense Fog", "A Measured Room", "Strange Light", and "Final Sunset". Mod grooves from the Italian scene – very much in the mode of some of the 60s-styled work that's been showing up on the Record Kicks label of late, with plenty of Hammond in the mix, but also an overall sound that's got some more rock-oriented influences. The organ work on the set really sounds great on the best tunes – laying out a groove that's almost in a British 60s beat group style, but served up with a sense of feeling that's informed by a few decades more worth of musical expression. Titles include "Italian Suite", "Aria", "Lessons In Love", "Another Chance", "Cozmootronic Experience (parts 1 & 2)", and "Horizon". (New Grooves, Rock) CD

Shotput/Columbia, 1971. Used 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
The landmark album from Hampton Grease Band – a group who were every bit as weird and wonderful as contemporaries like Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa – and who work here with a similar sense of wit and freeplay in their instrumentation! Given that the group originally had some blues elements in their music, there's a definite link to Beefheart – and there's a dynamism here that almost feels as if they felt like they conquered blues rock at an early age, when they were working the southern scene – then felt free to play with its elements in whatever way they wanted! Bruce Hampton's vocals are wonderful – almost as weird and skittish as sounds that would later come from the art/punk underground at the end of the decade – and titles include "Halifax", "Maria", "Evans", "Hey Old Lady & Bert's Song", and "Hendon". Dreamy sounds from Iasos – an early proponent of the world of new age music, but one that's far hipper than the bigger-label acts to come in the 80s! This set is beautifully spare and meditative – two side-long tracks, each a kind of warmer, more sentimental take on territory that Brian Eno was exploring with his ambient music projects – inflected maybe with a slightly spiritual vibe, as you'd guess from the title! Instrumentation is mostly electric, but used in ways that also really show the manner in which these early American pioneers of the format were marking their own space away from German electronic experimentation. A very strange little album – one of those records that was created without any interest in an audience – but which has gone on to become the stuff of legend over time! The set features vocal performances by a group of rural school students recorded in the mid 70s – often performing alongside just a bit of sad-tinged piano or guitar, as they deliver these surprisingly compelling versions of songs from their generation – tunes by David Bowie, Wings, The Beach Boys, and others – in versions that are completely different than the originals. The whole thing's about as strange as you can imagine – and has had a huge amount of attention and followers over the years. El (UK), Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A really cool little package – one that brings space age sounds from both the world of mainstream pop, and the farther reaches of electronic music composition in the postwar years! The core of CD1 is the groundbreaking album I Hear A New World by Joe Meek – presented here both in the "restored" version that was first issued by RPM in 1991, and the original unreleased tapes from 1960. The whole record is like The Ventures meeting space aliens – and Joe Meek composed and conceived the incredible 60s session of strange space-age instrumentals – one that mixes instrumental surf-flavored guitars with crazy sound effects and production techniques, for an out-of-this-world batch of tracks that's like nothing else we can think of! Tracks include "Glob Waterfall", "I Hear A New World", "Orbit Around The Moon", "March Of The Dribcots", and "Valley Of The Saroos". CD1 also features 11 more weird electronic tracks from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop – and from Ray Cathode. Then CD2 and CD3 move into the darker corners of experimental electronics and musique concrete – with works that include "Dripsody" by Hugh Le Caine, "Syncopation" by Tom Dissevelt, "Timbres Durees" by Olivier Messiaen, "Poeme Electronique" by Edgard Varese, "The Innocents" by Daphne Oram, "Fontana Mix" by John Cage, "Visage V (parts 1, 2, & 3)" by Luc Ferrari, "Musica Su Due Dimensioni" by Bruno Maderna, "Deux Etudes De Musique Concrete For Magnetic Tape" by Pierre Boulez, "Fantasy In Space" by Otto Luening, and "Piece For Tape Recorder" by Vladimir Ussachevsky. New York Rock & Roll EnsembleReflections – Music Composed By Manos Hadjidakis ... LP
Atco, 1970. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Quite possibly the most interesting album ever from the New York Rock & Roll Ensemble – a set done in close collaboration with Greek soundtrack maestro Manos Hadjidakis! The tunes are all penned by Hadjidakis, and they're performed by the group in an ambitious mode that has more than a few echoes of their Balkan heritage – bits of oboe, cello, and guitar used in ways that have a distinctly Greek-sounding flavor – supported by more conventional rock-styled rhythms that still manage to have a quality that's a bit more majestic than just regular small group rocking! Vocals are all in English, penned by members of the band on top of Hadjidakis' compositions – and the album's a great crossroads between 60s psyche and soundtrack genres. Titles include "Dedication", "The Day", "Love Her", "Dance Of The Dogs", "Kemal", "Orpheus", "Noble Dame", and "Better Way". LP, Vinyl record album

The fourth album from Roxy Music – and quite possibly their best to date! The album has the group moving strongly past the Eno years, into a tighter framework that still contains many of the darker themes of earlier records. Ferry's lead vocals are incredibly majestic – rising to heights to match the European greats of years past who were his inspiration – and the group's tight blend of reeds, guitar, and moody keyboards gives the whole album an off-kilter sense of instrumentation that really sets it apart from the pack. There's an artfulness here that's never overdone, and the whole thing comes together with a magic that's impossible to describe, but which is Roxy at their best. EG/Reprise, 1979. Used ... $3.99
A brilliant little comeback album for Roxy Music – their first album in 4 years after Siren, and a well-done departure that takes off from older records without losing any of their greatness! In a way, the set's almost the group's Lodger – a similar effort to Bowie's record from the same time that reflects a move away from heavier styles of earlier years, but never loses the edge of the group's best work. Manifesto also reflects some of the lessons learned by Bryan Ferry on his solo records – a bit leaner and cleaner presentation of the songs – but the album itself is also strongly a group production effort, and certainly feels that way in its use of Phil Manzenera's great guitars and Andy Mackay's horn arrangements. A mindblowing debut from Roxy Music – a record that took the world by storm in the 70s, and which is still pretty darn revolutionary all these many years later! Sure, the cover looks a bit cheesy and trashy, but the core of the music is amazing – this blistering array of guitars, electronics, and saxophone – all honed into songs that provide the perfect setting for the haunting vocals of Bryan Ferry! If you only know these guys from their later, softer work, you'll be quite surprised here – as the saxes by Andy Mackay are woven right in alongside the guitar of Phil Manzanera, and the album's laced with weird electronic and tape touches from Brian Eno. Peter Sinfield produced – as yet another mighty talent that was part of the proceedings – and titles include "Re-make/Re-Model", "Ladytron", "If There Is Something", "HB", "The Bob", "Chance Meeting", "Would You Believe", "Sea Breezes", and "Bitters End". Quite possibly the biggest early moment of US fame for Roxy Music – thanks to the classic "Love Is The Drug", which kicks off the album and is easily one of the group's best-known tunes of the 70s! The album tightens things up slightly from the sound of Country Life before – not as many dark corners, but still plenty of the offbeat styles that make these early Roxy Music albums so great – with none of the softer styles that took over during the early 80s years. Other tracks include "End Of The Line", "Sentimental Fool", "She Sells", "Could It Happen To Me", "Both Ends Burning", "Just Another High", and "Whirlwind". CD

Helen ShapiroFace The Music – The Complete Singles 1967 to 1984 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
Excellent work from Helen Shapiro – a UK singer known for a few big hits in the 60s, but represented here by a much wider scope of work – including a number of tracks that appear here on CD for the first time ever! Like some of the best of her generation, Helen's got that sweet UK female pop approach that's often heavy on influences from American soul, especially Motown – so that she really soars as she belts on the lyrics, over tunes that often have similarly soulful arrangements and really impeccable production! The package brings together both the a-sides and b-sides of singles recorded for a number of different labels – all with the superb Ace Records presentation that includes detailed notes and excellent sound quality – and the focus is mostly on material from the late 60s and early 70s. Titles include "She Needs Company", "Sill Boy", "Today Has Been Cancelled", "Face The Music", "Stop & You Will Become Aware", "Just Another Weekend", "Brickyard Blues", "That's The Reason I Love You", "A Glass Of Wine", "Waiting On The Shores Of Nowhere", "Take Me For A While", "The Way Of The World", and "Touchin Wood". B- Music/Finders Keepers, 1975. Used ... $13.99
Funky breaks and fuzzy guitars – one of the most amazing albums to come out of the Turkish scene of the 70s – and one with a sound that really defies categorization! Although the sweet image of a girl and guitar on the cover might make you think the record's a folk set, the overall production is heavily electric – filled with fuzzed-up touches on the guitars, and usually supported by some funky drumming that gives most of the record a cool Eastern break sort of feel! Lyrics aren't in English, but they're oddly compelling even if you don't know what they mean – as Selda's voice has a weird other-wordly quality, and comes off with the same tripped-out qualities as the music! Titles include "Ince Ince", "Nasirli Eller", "Mehmet Emmi", "Dost Uyan", "Gitme", "Kizil Dere", "Yaz Gazeteci Yaz", and "Meydan Sizindir". CD features 5 bonus tracks – but it's not like you've got the original album, and needed those as an incentive to buy the reissue! CD

The first album from Laid Back – the Danish duo who would soon dominate the world of breakdance with their electro-pop groove! This set has Laid Back sounding maybe a bit more rock at the core, but still with plenty of electronic touches around the edge – maybe a catchier version of DAF in the mid 80s, or a group that's traveling in the same pop territory as Peter Schilling or Nena – right down to their use of English language lyrics in the set! Those lyrics often have a nice accent, though – which also keeps things interesting – on titles that include "Maybe I'm Crazy", "China Girl", "Keep On Moving", "Take Me Home", "Roger", "Night Train Boogie", and "Man From The Moon". CD features a number of bonus tracks from singles – including "Walk On", "New Feeling", and some other mixes too. (Soul, Rock) CD

Apple/Hear Music, 1971. Used 2CD ... $16.99
An early moment of genius from post-Beatles Paul McCartney – a solo set that's wonderfully diverse throughout – filled with the kinds of cool little twists and turns we loved in his late Beatles records, and in his 70s killers with Wings! There's a newly-emerging sweetness going on here – that great sound that started to emerge with the McCartney album – where Paul was a proud, put-together family guy – easily one of the most confident of his fab foursome, and able to bring an incredible amount of charm to just about any style he wanted to try! Some of the best cuts here are the mellower, more personal moments – still delivered with an amazing rock-solid sense of musicianship and production, too – and even the rockers, which might sound clunky in the hands of anyone else, manage to come off with a great deal of charm as well. Titles include the wonderfully playful "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" – plus "Too Many People", "Heart Of The Country", "Dear Boy", "Ram On", "The Back Seat Of My Car", and "Smile Away". 2CD version features some rare tracks and b-sides – including "Another Day", "Oh Woman Oh Why", "Little Woman Love", "Love For You", "Hey Diddle (Dixon Van Winkle mix)", "Great Cock & Seagull Race (Dixon Van Winkle mix)", "Rode All Night", and "Sunshine Sometime (earliest mix)". ✨✧ A BolhaUm Passo A Frente (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Continental/Lion, 1973. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Massively heavy sounds from A Bolha – a Brazilian group who were previously known as The Bubbles, and backed up Gal Costa during the Tropicalia years – but who work here in a fuzzy, bassy groove that's totally great – definitely an heir to the headier sounds of the UK scene at the start of the 70s! The guitars are definitely in full force here, but the basslines drive things along strongly too – echoing some of the Peruvian sounds of the time, but with a bit more Brazilian sophistication – and definitely a musical echo of lessons learned during Tropicalia, even though the set's a fully instrumental one. Organ also figures in the mix too – and titles include "Bye My Friend", "Razao De Existir", "Um Passo A Frente", "A Esfera", and "Neste Rock Forever". CD is beautifully done – with full notes in the great Lion tradition – and bonus tracks that include "Sem Nada" and "18.30 Parte 1". CD

AcanthusLe Frisson Des Vampires (transparent blood red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Finders Keepers, 1971. New Copy ... About October 15, 2020 (delayed)
A strange, eerie psychedelia and prog steeped soundtrack to the Jean Rollins French vampire film Le Frisson Des Vampires – played by the group Acanthus – a great little set of evocative, stripped down macabre instrumentals and trippy bits of dialogue! Finders Keepers describes the sound by comparing it to lynchpin combos of early prog as affected by "a 1000 year old acid infused blood transfusion", and guess what – that's perfect! Guitar melodies spun very loosely and eerily rolling along with improved bits and creepy sound sound effects – but it never veers into shlocky horror movie music, it's psych-steeped instrumental rock, played in a spooky style. The music is great, and the bits of dialogue (in English) is totally priceless! Includes Funerailles Des Vampires", "Le Frisson Des Vampires", "La Chateau", "Wedding Party (Angoisse Temporelle)", "Occupied Clock", "Who Are You?", "Blood-Cups", "Isabelles Demise", "Night Excursion", "Isa's Ceremony", "Flightless Bird", "The Shiver Of The Vampires", "Envol Vers La Folie" and more. 27 tracks in all – the entire, previously unreleased soundtrack! Luglio/Wah Wah (Spain), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A really experimental set from the Italian scene of the 70s – an album that might easily fit in the great legacy of albums on the Cramps label, even though it was issued by the artist himself! The approach is very unique – as the record mostly features organ and keyboard lines from Giacomo Mino Di Martino – a musician with roots in prog, but who'd also discovered much more avant, creative territory over the years – partly in collaboration with his wife, actress Terra Di Benedetto, who provides some unusual vocalizations on the set! The whole thing is very different than anything we can think of – at times, almost like some of the better melodic moments of the UK industrial underground of the mid 80s, but also with some of the starker qualities that mark the Italian avant scene of the time the album was issued. Paradise Of Bachelors, Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy LP, 3CD & Book ... $26.99 32.99
Terry Allen has always been one of the most enigmatic figures in Texas music – but the work included here might well be some of his most compelling – even if it is a bit far from the straighter country of his start! Allen's always been a very narrative songwriter – and here, he takes that form one further – in a series of radio plays and longer audio narratives, most of which intersperse sung passages with spoken bits, sound effects, and beautiful music as well! These aren't any sort of sleepy, too-prosaic works – but instead, the sort of material that's always had us link Allen's music with the books of Barry Gifford or Barry Hannah – instantly evocative, and with a vision for storytelling that's completely captivating – a journey begun on his Juarez album, and really extended here. The special package features the first vinyl appearance of a few of these pieces – and 3CDs of music that contain the complete "Pedal Steel", "Torso Hell", "Bleeder", "Dugout", and "Reunion (A Return To Juarez)". Also features a great 28 page booklet on all the material! (Folk/Country, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

A big international record from Amon Duul – and for good reason, too – as the set's filled with catchy little tracks that have this really cool blend of prog and glam! The style's almost like Roxy Music at points – with the vocals all compressed in the guitars, and this sinister vibe in the instrumentation – played by a group who clearly know how to stretch out more, but instead pack a lot of experimentation into shorter, groovier space. The vocals are in English, but accented – which gives them a further offbeat vibe – and titles include "The King's Chocolate Waltz", "Emigrant Son", "La Krautoma", "Metropolis", "Gala Gnome", and "Mr Kraut's Jinx". About the only thing familiar here is the set of drums played at times by Limpe – alongside all sorts of other incredible things created by the pair – including a bowed stringed instrument, a large horn of copper, strange combinations of exotic wind instruments and mouthpieces, a foot zither, and other unusual percussion instruments – all used in ways that are very open and improvised – almost as if you had a troupe of Harry Partch musicians creating their own music after hours. MGM/Poker (UK), 1964. Used ... $6.99
Dreamy 60s pop from Ginny Arnell – a sweet-voiced singer working in a very echoey space! There's a nicely weepy quality to Ginny's music – not in a way that's overly emotive, but which comes from the odd mix of guitar lines, bubbling bass, and heavy echo used to record the music – all with qualities that start feeling sad long before Arnell even sings a word of the lyrics – and which is almost a female equivalent to the best blue modes of Bobby Vinton's work of the same time! Arrangements are by a variety of talents – including Bill McElhieny, Al Gorgoni, and Ray Stevens – but there's a nicely unified feel to the set, thanks to the strong production on the album from Jim Vienneau – clearly an under-acknowledged genius of 60s pop. Titles include "Dumbhead", "I Wish I Knew What Dress To Wear", "I'm So Afraid Of Loving You", "He's My Little Devil", "This Is Mine", "You Pulled A Fast One", "I Don't Want You This Way", and "This Is Mine". Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of great albums from the overlooked Ars Nova – back to back in a single set! First up is the 1968 self-titled Ars Nova – a wonderful little set of post-folk rock – with lots of lovely baroque touches! Ars Nova were really short-lived group – known for only two rare records – but they've got a sound that perfectly sums up a generation! There's a wonderful LA late 60s sound here – somewhere between Love and The Byrds, with the baroque touches of the former and the best country influences of the latter – all wrapped up in earnest, honest songwriting that makes even the ambitious moments come across with surprising charm. A true lost relic, and the kind of record that should be in any late 60s cannon! Titles include "Album In Your Mind", "Pavan For My Lady", "General Clover Ends A War", "And How Am I To Know", "Fields Of People", "Automatic Love", and "Song To The City". Sunshine & Shadows is the second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". Really great work by The Association – a back-to-basics effort that has the group handling most of the instrumentation themselves, in a way that often gives the set a surprisingly intimate feel! Sure, these are the guys who virtually invented candy-coated Sunshine Pop – but they're also a heck of a great group at the core, and move here into some of the looser, more relaxed modes of the Warner Brothers scene at the time – a setting that really helps them bring a hell of a lot of personality to the music. Harmony vocals still soar out beautifully when needed, and the arrangements and songwriting show a lot more signs of their association with the hip LA scene of the 60s – a maturation that really pushes their sound forward in a wonderful way. RCA/Sacred Bones, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... On November 6, 2020
One of the spookiest albums we've ever heard from moog maestro Mort Garson – way darker and more complex than his Wozzard Of Id or moogy horoscope projects – with a feel that's much more like his legendary Black Mass album! Like that one, there's a fair current of supernatural running through the mix – an early use of the electronics to explore the darker corners of reality, served up with lots of cool 70s occult touches – in a way that's oddly more timeless than some of the later projects of this nature from the industrial generation. Garson's range of tones is wonderful – from fuzzy bassy bits, to sparkling keyboard lines, to lots of spacey sounds in between – and titles include "I Ching", "Tarot", "Deja Vu", "Seance", "Sorcerer", and "Astral Projection". One of the most righteous, message-oriented albums ever from David Axelrod – and the third in his legendary trilogy of instrumental sets for Capitol Records! Earth Rot moves even past the modes of Songs Of Innocence and Songs Of Experience – to offer up a chilling message on the environment, circa 1970 – with beautiful arrangements in the best Axelrod tradition – performed by a large group of jazz players who mixes vibes, guitars, and off-kilter reeds – augmented by a group of singers who perform some of the lyrics of the set, most of which are adapted from the Old Testament and from Navajo legends! The record's broken into two long suites – "The Warnings" and "The Signs" – and the whole thing blends together in a spacey, other-worldly mix of heavy arrangements and trippy grooves! The kind of overlooked, understated gem that should have put Badfinger at the top of the charts in the mid 70s – a record of impeccable songwriting, really great production, and a refinement of an earlier musical ideal that really points the way forward – all while avoiding most of the pitfalls of some of the group's UK contemporaries! There's a quality here that almost reminds us of the more straightforward elements of Wings, but with a rootsy vibe too – almost a bit like Little Feat, but definitely British in terms of the way the vocals come across. The album's overflowing with hooks, and the kinds of songs that should have been huge – and maybe that's what makes it such a treat all these many years later. Bobby BareBobby Bare Sings Shel Silverstein Plus (8CD set) ... CD
RCA/Bear Family (Germany), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 8CD ... $216.99 249.99
A huge tribute to one of the most important partnerships in country music during the 70s – the vocal talents of Bobby Bare and the offbeat songwriting skills of Shel Silverstein – one that helped both artists really hit their heights during the decade! Bare had cut some great work for RCA during the 60s, but was floundering a bit after a brief stop at Mercury Records at the end of the decade – and Silverstein was a multi-voiced artist who was part of the Chicago folk world, a member of Hugh Hefner's inner circle, and both a cartoonist and a clever wordsmith – but one who never had the right showcase for his own songs. Johnny Cash and a few others sung Silverstein songs – but it was really Bobby Bare who found the right platform for Shel's music – taking the hip Midwestern words into more of a down-home spirit in Nashville – blending things perfectly as Bare really started to explore the format of album-length expression in the 70s. This huge set brings together all the remnants of that partnership – and includes 25 unreleased tracks, plus the full albums Lullabys Legends & Lies, Hard Time Hungrys, Singin In The Kitchen, Great American Saturday Night , Down &Y Dirty, Drink & Crazy, and lots more material – plus a huge 128 page hardcover book that has a look at the career of both artists, lots of photos, lyrics, and session details too! 137 tracks on 8CDs – and a stunning collection! Unheard music from guitar genius Robbie Basho – a selection of tracks that were never issued at the time, all rescued from Basho's archive of over 100 reel to reel tapes! Robbie gave us some groundbreaking records on Fantasy, Vanguard, and Blue Thumb – which established him as one of the most important guitarists of the new acoustic generation to rise up in the 60s, alongside important contemporary John Fahey. But Basho also kept on evolving in his music before his untimely early death in 1986, even though he was often not getting the attention from labels that he deserved – which is why a package like this is so great! Robbie BashoVenus In Cancer ... LP
Blue Thumb/Traffic, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99 24.98
One of the wildest albums ever from the great Robbie Basho – as you might guess from the cover! Basho first made waves with his solo guitar work (and a bit of vocalizations) for the Takoma label, during the early years of John Fahey – but as the 60s ended, Robbie had more of a spiritual awakening – which really changed up certain aspects of his music. The set's still got some beautiful long-spun guitar passages – acoustic work that makes Basho maybe an even closer tie to Sandy Bull than Fahey – but Robbie also sings a bit too, in this weirdly trilling voice that almost feels as if it's been pulled from some 15th century pagan culture, but infused with a new missionary spirit. Most of the set is instrumental, but these vocal moments are wonderfully haunting too – and titles include "Venus In Cancer", "Eagle Sails The Blue Diamond Waters", "Kowaka D'Amour", "Song For The Queen", "Cathedrals Et Fleur De Lis", and "Wine Song (Sweet Wine Of Love)". Lucio BattistiRarities (180 gram pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Ricordi/RCA (Italy), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... $29.99
A nice collection of work from Italian legend Lucio Battisti – most of which predate the 80s look of the cassettes on he cover! Lucio's in great form here – stepping out on unusual songs, but with that richly soulful style that made him one of the most important in a new generation of expression in Italian music – as emotive as pop singers from the previous decades, but much more contemporary and universal overall. Titles include "La Folle Corsa", "La Spada Nel Cuore", "Vendo Casa", "Per Una Lira", "Il Mio Bambino", and "La Farfalla Impazzita". LP, Vinyl record album

Beach BoysPet Sounds (mono) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Capitol, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
One of the greatest records of all time – and don't you forget it! Despite the countless lines of type that have been written about this record, nothing does it full justice like an all-through listen – something we're reminded of every time we put this one on the turntable, which is a heck of a lot over the years! Brian Wilson busted his ass making this little gem – and the rest of the world, and the band, were never the same again – awash in harmonies that most other groups tried to match, set to themes of young loss, longing, and frustration that really mark an emotional development – not just in the Beach Boys, but in pop music in general. And although some of the tracks are ones you've heard a million times on oldies stations, they somehow resonate together much more strongly here – taking on new meaning as the smaller elements of each song come into constellation with each other – creating a complicated tapestry of feelings set to near-godlike orchestrations. Titles include "God Only Knows", "Caroline No", "Pet Sounds", "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", and "You Still Believe In Me". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Beach BoysSurf's Up ... LP
Brother, 1971. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A record with "surf" in the title, but one that's light years from the earlier Beach Boys albums of the 60s! This set is a wonderfully mature effort – hardly surf music at all, and one that moves nicely in the same territory as Sunflower and 20/20! Some of the tunes are wonderfully gentle and heartfelt, and others try for some new subject matter for the group – sometimes missing the mark a bit, but still holding our interest strongly in the way they try. Genius work include "Disney Girls" and "Til I Die" – both instant classics – and other titles include "Don't Go Near The Water", "Long Promised Road", "A Day In The Life Of A Tree", and "Surf's Up". Beach BoysSurfer Girl/Shut Down Vol 2 (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol, Early 60s. Used ... $5.99
2 early ones from The Beach Boys – records that show them growing a lot, musically and emotionally, and also showing a bit of the strain to fill so many albums with quality material. This 27 track set features some real gems – like the original and German versions of "In My Room", the obscure "Surfer Moon", and the incredibly haunting "Warmth Of The Sun", one of the first real moments of genius from Brian Wilson. Other titles include a few oddball numbers – like "Denny's Drums" and "Cassius Love vs Sonny Wilson" – plus classics like "Fun Fun Fun", "Don't Worry Baby", "Keep An Eye On Summer", "Our Car Club", "Little Deuce Coup", and "Surfer Girl".
