✨✧ BandMusic From Big Pink ... LP
Capitol, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
The landmark first album from The Band – and along with the follow-up, it's among the greatest records of its time – which is all the more astounding given how independent of late 60s trends it is! Each member of The Band brings such inimitable textures – Garth Hudson's imposing organ grooves, Richard Manuel's aching tenor vocals, Rick Danko's voice and distinctive bass lines, Levon Helm's behind-the-beat drumming and the country wisdom of his voice, Robertson's guitar mastery – this really was THE Band. Includes "Tears Of Rage", "In A Station", "The Weight", "Long Black Veil", "Chest Fever", "Lonesome Suzie", "This Wheels On Fire", "I Shall Be Released" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

BuzzcocksAnother Music In A Different Kitchen ... CD
Domino, 1978. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
The fantastic first full album from The Buzzcocks – a group who'd already set the UK scene on fire with a flurry of amazing singles at the start of the punk generation! Here, they amazingly keep up all the great energy of their 7" releases – moving at a blistering pace throughout, with more focus than the Sex Pistols in their instrumentation, and a mixture of drum, bass, and guitar interplay that virtually became the blueprint for the whole west coast hardcore scene to come! Pete Shelly has never sounded so sinister, and the mighty Martin Rushnet puts the whole thing together with beautifully lean production – on classics that include "Fast Cars", "No Reply" "Get On Our Own", "I Don't Mind", "Autonomy", "Love Battery", "I Need", "Moving Away From The Pulsebeat", and "Fictionromance". ChasePure Music/Chase ... CD
Epic/Vocalion (UK), 1971/1974. New Copy ... $18.99
A pair of albums from Chase – one of the hippest jazz rock combos of the 70s! The self-titled Chase album first burned onto the market in 1971 – and it's a great distillation of a groove that was bubbling around in various other segments at the time – some of the tighter big band rhythms of the late 60s, as you might find in the work of Maynard Ferguson or Woody Herman – mixed with the hipper rhythms from the rockish underground, particularly in the work of Blood Sweat & Tears or Chicago. Chase is a fair bit jazzier than both of those groups – as they often put the horns more upfront than the vocals – although most numbers do have some sort of vocals as well. Instrumentation is heavy on trumpets – which come together in blasting, blaring groove, even despite the smaller size of the combo – and Phil Porter lays down some great keyboard lines that really help some of the best tracks cook nicely. Titles include "Handbags & Gladrags", "Livin In Heat", "Open Up Wide", "Hello Groceries", "Boys & Girls Together", and "Invitation To A River". Ennea is a jazz rock classic that still sounds pretty darn tasty today – forged on the heels of Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears, but with a sound that's leaner and meaner! The group's led by trumpeter Bill Chase – hence their name – and features lead vocals by GG Shinn and Terry Richards, both in a style that's got the same blue-eyed jazz soul overtones as that used by the groups mentioned above. The real strength of the tracks, though, is their jazzy backings – horn-heavy, as you'd expect, and hitting some great riffs and licks on the album's side-long title "suite", which features many instrumental passages. Titles include "Hades", "Aphrodite (parts 1 & 2)", "Zeus", "Poseidon", "Cronus", "It Won't Be Long", "I Can Feel It", and "Night". CD

Sleeping Bag, 1981. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $18.99 20.98
An incredible full album from Dinosaur L – the legendary New York dancefloor project of Arthur Russell! The group's a punky, funky, chunky amalgam of bass thumping, guitar riffing, keyboard filling, and sax honking – all very much in the spirit of Russell's best quirky club work of the time, but with the added sound here of a more expanded approach – one that takes the tunes in a whole new territory than the more famous 12" singles! The tracks on the set are simply numbered – "1", "2", "3", and so on – and come across almost as free-jamming instrumentals! Totally great stuff – as experimental as it is funky! ✨✧ Frankie Dymon JrLet It Out – Poems In Words And Music ... CD
Gorilla Musik (Germany), 1971. New Copy ... $4.99
Not Frankie Lymon, but Frankie Dymon – a US expatriate who works here with some funky prog backings! Dymon delivers hip, soulful poetry in English – often with a bit of a dark edge – and the instrumentation features guitar, piano, and organ – all familiar elements, but produced with an eerie, abstract feel by the legendary Conny Plank, who really brings in a strong sense of space to the set! While the album's got a degree of righteous power, it's different than American efforts of this type – much more heady, and trippy overall – US themes and concerns abstracted out in the newer freedoms of the European scene. All music was composed by guitarist Adam Reichel, who spearheads the project – and titles include "Wait N*gger Wait", "The City", "Aftermyth", "Soul Sister Angela", "In The Same Bag", and "Judy". CD

Brian EnoAmbient 1 – Music For Airports ... LP
EG, 1978. Very Good- ... $24.99
A landmark moment – both for Brian Eno, and for experimental music in general! Although Eno began his solo run with some searing, guitar-heavy records that were even wilder than his early work with Roxy Music – he also began experimenting with more sensitive aspects of sound on albums like Another Green World and Before & After Science – an approach he takes here to the farthest degree, by opening up himself and creating a whole new genre of ambient music in the process! Gone are the raspy, sometimes nasty vocals – and in their place is virtually nothing – just beautifully open music that uses scores that are somewhat cyclical – but at a pace that's very different than the minimalism of the period – and maybe even more minimal too. The record features four long tracks, one with piano by Robert Wyatt – really beautiful stuff, like some strange dark sonic crystal that fell out of the skies years ago, and which still remains a mystery to all ears that stumble upon it! Brian EnoDiscreet Music (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Obscure/Astralwerks, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! LP, Vinyl record album

EG/Astralwerks, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A compilation LP of sorts – though at the time of its release most of this material had not been heard in this form! The album's more or less part of the "Ambient" series Eno had started that year with Music For Airports – and it's presented with similarly simple, elegant packaging – a cool divergence from the more striking Eno of a few years before. The set is made up of various bits, record either exclusively for film use, or that in one way or another found their way into films – and contains mostly short tunes, some thematic, others purely sonic wallpaper, but always compelling! 18 tracks, including "M386", "Aragon", "Two Rapid Formations", "Slow Water", "Sparrowfall", "Evenings In Dense Fog", "A Measured Room", "Strange Light", and "Final Sunset". Bo Hansson works here heavy on keyboards, but also uses some nicely spacey guitars – all spun out over tunes that could each work as mini-soundtracks for separate sections of the three volume book – with titles that include "Fog On The Barrow Downs", "Leaving The Shire", "Lothlorien", "Shadowfax", "The Black Riders & Flight To The Ford", and "Dreams In The House Of Healing". Rhino, 1991. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $34.99
Great music from the second season of Twin Peaks – and a continuing illustration of the power of Angelo Baldamenti's music for the show! The strength of these simple themes and tunes is clear right from the get-go – as Angelo serves things up in a mode that's subtle, but still filled with the dark mystery that made the show so great – and all these many years later, there's a surprisingly timeless feel to the sound of the work, given that Baldamenti chose to use better keyboards and piano than the usual early 90s styles – plus a fair bit of acoustic instrumentation with a jazzy undercurrent as well. The package is a bit heavier on photos than notes, so we're not sure of the exact placement of all these cuts – but we can say that the CD features 22 tracks that include "Shelly", "Love Theme Intro", "I'm Hurt Bad", "Cop Beat", "Barbershop", "Harold's Theme", and "Packard's Vibration". Verve, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $34.99
A very tripped-out set of meditation music – issued by Verve in the late 60s, and arguably even more spacey and atmospheric than some of Tony Scott's similar records for the label at the time! Malachi is actually John Morgan Newbern – working here in a spare setting to capture the "evening vibrations" of a single night in 1966 – served up through instrumentation that includes low-end percussion, acoustic guitar, and a fair bit of Jew's harp – played by Steve Cunningham (of Red Crayola fame), but drifting out slowly over the longer tracks in the set. The album's an early example of the extremes that 60s labels used to address the growing interest in Eastern ideals at the time – and it's much less commercial than some of the more gimmicky sessions of the decade. Titles include "Wednesday – Second", "Wednesday – Sixth", "Wednesday – Fourth", "Wednesday – Fifth", and "Wednesday – Eighth". LP, Vinyl record album

Larry Page OrchestraKinky Music ... LP
Richmond/Trading Places (UK), 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Larry Page was a big figure in the British music scene of the 60s – manager of the Kinks, and a growing force in record production too – so much so, he decided to put himself in the limelight as the leader of this all-instrumental set of songs by his most famous group! Ray Davies arranged all the tunes, and the readings follow pretty closely to the structure of original Kinks tunes – but shift things up with the instruments used – adding in more horns, shifting a keyboard for a guitar, or vice versa – and filling up the space in the middle to cover up the absence of the vocals! The set is also noteworthy for a bit of guitar by a young Jimmy Page – and titles include "One Fine Day", "Come On Now", "Tired Of Waiting For You", "Don't Ever Change", "You Really Got Me", "Just Can't Go To Sleep", "Everybody's Gonna Be Happy", and "All Day & All Of The Night". Capitol, 1972. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 21.98
A mindblowing debut from Roxy Music – a record that took the world by storm in the 70s, and which is still pretty darn revolutionary all these many years later! Sure, the cover looks a bit cheesy and trashy, but the core of the music is amazing – this blistering array of guitars, electronics, and saxophone – all honed into songs that provide the perfect setting for the haunting vocals of Bryan Ferry! If you only know these guys from their later, softer work, you'll be quite surprised here – as the saxes by Andy Mackay are woven right in alongside the guitar of Phil Manzanera, and the album's laced with weird electronic and tape touches from Brian Eno. Peter Sinfield produced – as yet another mighty talent that was part of the proceedings – and titles include "Re-make/Re-Model", "Ladytron", "If There Is Something", "HB", "The Bob", "Chance Meeting", "Would You Believe", "Sea Breezes", and "Bitters End". Amazing 2CD expanded edition comes in a book-like cover, with lots of pages of notes – and CD 2 features 14 more bonus tracks – Peel Sessions recordings of "Virginia Plain", "Sea Breezes", "Remake/Remodel", "The Bob", "Would You Believe", "2HB", "Ladytron", and "Chance Meeting" – plus a live BBC In Concert Performance from March 8, 1972 – with performances of five more tracks! Cameo/Abkco, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
A fantastic early side of work from 70s superstar Bob Seger – and one that comes as quite a surprise, compared to his hits! This early material is really raw, gritty, and definitely shows Bob's roots in the same Detroit scene that was changing the worlds of both soul and rock in the late 60s – often with groups that had an equal emphasis on both sides of the spectrum! In fact, there's a surprisingly strong current of soul that runs through many of these cuts – a romping energy that really matches the freakier, fuzzier touches of the instrumentation – all with results that will have you maybe thinking about Bob in a whole new way. Some of the modes recall the best early Mitch Ryder material, but often with a trippier sort of vibe – and although the tracks came out as singles on the Cameo label in the mid 60s, this is the first full album ever issued of the material. Titles include "Sock It To Me Santa", "Heavy Music (parts 1 & 2)", "Chain Smokin", "Persecution Smith", "Vagrant Winter", "East Side Story", "Very Few", and "Florida Time". CD

Spotnicks/Russ Garcia/Ron GoodwinOut Of This World (Music In Orbit/Fantastica) ... CD
El (UK), Mid 50s. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
Space age pop galore – from a trio of very groovy sources! The Spotnicks start out the set with three cool guitar instrumentals – "Telstar", "Moonshot", and "Rocket Man" – done in their great blend of Ventures guitar modes and offbeat Joe Meek production styles – with a sound that's years ahead of its time! Next is the excellent album Out Of This World – from Brit arranger Ron Goodwin, with production by the legendary George Martin! The album was billed as Music In Orbit here in the US – and is a wonderful album of space-age easy listening! The album features no electronics, but Goodwin's use of soaring strings is somewhere between the Fantastic Planet soundtrack and some of the later moogy albums in the 60s. Scoring is richly sophisticated, with a complicated approach to the material that would befit a high-end 50s sci-fi soundtrack – made even better by the excellent cover, which features a beautiful purple painting of a rocket blasting off of a planet in space. The whole thing's perhaps a bit more romantic than spooky, but the mood changes nicely from track to track to keep things fresh. Titles include "The Moon", "The Venus Waltz", "Mercury Gets The Message", "The Sun", "Jumping Jupiter", and "Martians On Parade". Last up is Russ Garcia's Fantastica – one of the space-age bachelor pad electronic classics! Russ Garcia was mostly a jazz arranger in his day – but he does a good job of scoring some moody sci-fi tracks for this set – mixing full orchestrations with some great electronics handled by Ted Keep, all in a format that replicates a journey through the universe – with stops at lots of unusual galaxies along the way! The album's got a great mix of complicated strings and woodwinds, which offset the spooky electronics nicely – and although playful, the record also represents some of Garcia's most serious scoring on record. Titles include "Into Space", "Nova", "Monster's Of Jupiter", "Red Sands Of Mars", and "Moon Rise". (Now Sound, Rock) CD

A really tremendous album from The Talking Heads – and a set that moves far past their already-great early records, to really show a rhythmic complexity we never would have expected! Brian Eno is helping the group in the studio again here, and the record really shows both David Byrne and Eno's late 70s fascination with global rhythms – elements that are often used in spare, simple little ways to really help inflect the tunes with a playful imagination that goes way beyond the colder post-punk and new wave of most of their contemporaries! The balance of previous aesthetics with these new grooves is wonderful – heard to great effect on the classic club cut "I Zimbra" – but brewing up strongly underneath on gems that include "Mind", "Paper", "Cities", "Life During Wartime", "Memories Can't Wait", "Air", "Heaven", "Animals", "Electric Guitar", and "Drugs". Shakespeare never sounded so compelling before – given a very cool soundtrack by the Third Ear Band, who were moved to work on this project in collaboration with director Roman Polanski! The music is fantastic away from the film – very different than some of the group's earlier records, and a lot more eerie too – as some of their usual string and reed elements almost take on an electronic vibe in the process! Most tracks are very spacious and open, with the violin and oboe crafting some especially sharp, angular sounds – almost as if the group were let loose in some sort of analogue electronic studio. Titles include "The Beach", "The Banquet", "Dagger & Death", "Bear Baiting", "Groom's Dance", "Prophetics", and "Wicca Way". TullySea Of Joy – Music From The Film By Paul Witzig ... LP
Harvest (Australia), 1970. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Deeply introspective music penned for a 1970 Australian surf film – tracks that have a grounding in instrumental rock, but which also show plenty of trance-like and meditative modes as well! The titles are relatively short, but spin out with an open-ended quality that's almost like that of much longer instrumental jams – built up out of a spare and shifting assemblage of elements that include organ, flute, clarinet, piano, gong, and guitar – plus a bit of softly-sung vocals on a few numbers. There's an almost folk-like fragility to some of the tunes, but others have a more spacious feel that fits their use in a second-generation surf film nicely. Titles include "Cat Clarinet Mit Orgel", "Follow Me", "Pseudo Tragic Dramatic", "Sea Of Joy", "Thank You", "Softly Softly", "Syndrome", and "Down To The Sea". Finders Keepers (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $22.99
Denis Wise plays all instruments on this record – everything but the kitchen sink! Oh wait – the liner notes actually indicate that he does play a kitchen sink – and a garbage disposal too – but in ways that are completely changed, as he mixes them with sounds from a variety of guitars, keyboards, percussion, and various electronic instruments – all in this wild style that's surprisingly earthy and organic! At some level, the music is more a garage version of electro-acoustic modes from the academy – but at another, it's pure unbridled creation, with a sense of sonic joy that really comes through on the best numbers. Some songs are slightly tuneful, and there's maybe a bit of offbeat abstracted vocals here and there – on tunes that include "Balfazzar", "Light As Air", "Valhalla", "Machine Time Ship", "Love In Foam & Surf", "Andro", "Celes", and "Hedonic Rapture". Thom YorkeSuspiria (Music For The Luca Guadagnino Film) ... CD
XL, 2018. New Copy ... $9.99 18.98
A really great soundtrack to the remade version of Suspiria – a film that was famously scored by Goblin in the 70s, and which might have an equally great match here in the music of Thom Yorke! Yorke's sounds here are more extended and even spookier – electronic, but often abstracted – as in some of the more recent work by John Carpenter, even though Yorke's very much his own man – and not nearly in a Carpenter mode! Instead, he's part of a rare slice of contemporary composers who are not only inspired by horror sounds of the past, but also firmly committed to taking them to a new level – one that blossoms with as much inventive recording and production techniques as instrumental elements at the core. Titles include "The Hooks", "Suspirium", "A Storm That Took Everything", "Volk", "The Universe Is Indifferent", "A Choir Of One", "Synthesizer Speaks", and "The Inevitable Pull". B- Music (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $22.99
Funky psychedelia and multicultural cosmic grooves – late 60s & early 70s discoveries collected and put together by a team of some of the deepest diggers of boundary busting pulpy material out there –the vital B-Music/Finders Keepers team! Here they've delivered one of our favorite B- compilations yet, really a mindblowing set of tunes. The sounds are far flung and from all over the world – but they share a common trait in that no matter how far out a tune might be, they all have a furious core groove. Wild cinematic soundtrack bits, spacey early prog, freaky folk, buzzing guitar jams, spiraling keyboard and hard driving funk tunes of all kinds – obscure stuff from Turkey, China, France, Europe, Japan, Poland, and the wilds of the UK & US scenes – amazing stuff all around! Nearly half of these nuggets were selected by B- resident geniuses Andy Votel and Dom Thomas, and the others chosen by influential guest DJ, producers & tastemakers including David Holmes, Lee Janda, Cherrystones, Chris McBride & others. 21 tracks in all: "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly" by The Melodians, "Be Quite" (sic) by Jean Jacques Dexter, "Green Mountain, Jade Valley" by Cheung Kam Chun, "Arkham" by Spectre, "Bebek" by Sevil & Ayla, "Caballo Salvaje" by Unidades, "Fire" by Pegasus, "South Indian Line" by Jan Jankeje, "Guerra E Pace, Pollo E Brace" by Ennio Morricone, and more, plus the bonus track "Mera Mehbob Hai" by Nahid Akhtar. B- Music/Finders Keepers, 1975. Used ... $18.99
Funky breaks and fuzzy guitars – one of the most amazing albums to come out of the Turkish scene of the 70s – and one with a sound that really defies categorization! Although the sweet image of a girl and guitar on the cover might make you think the record's a folk set, the overall production is heavily electric – filled with fuzzed-up touches on the guitars, and usually supported by some funky drumming that gives most of the record a cool Eastern break sort of feel! Lyrics aren't in English, but they're oddly compelling even if you don't know what they mean – as Selda's voice has a weird other-wordly quality, and comes off with the same tripped-out qualities as the music! Titles include "Ince Ince", "Nasirli Eller", "Mehmet Emmi", "Dost Uyan", "Gitme", "Kizil Dere", "Yaz Gazeteci Yaz", and "Meydan Sizindir". CD features 5 bonus tracks – but it's not like you've got the original album, and needed those as an incentive to buy the reissue! CD

Dawn/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $23.99 25.98
A legendary group who never fully got their due – and maybe one of the creepier acts on the British scene at the start of the 70s! The cover art probably gives things away – but the sound of the record is even more haunting – with some acoustic elements that echo the acid folk movement of the time, but more dynamic energy at other spots that resonate more with prog – all topped by vocals that have a completely sinister sound that really makes the group stand out! Despite the acoustic guitars, these guys are hardly the traditional-leaning style of some of their folk rock contemporaries – and, if anything, it feels like they opened up some Pandora's box from the past, and let out all this weird Wicker Man energy. The first album from Laid Back – the Danish duo who would soon dominate the world of breakdance with their electro-pop groove! This set has Laid Back sounding maybe a bit more rock at the core, but still with plenty of electronic touches around the edge – maybe a catchier version of DAF in the mid 80s, or a group that's traveling in the same pop territory as Peter Schilling or Nena – right down to their use of English language lyrics in the set! Those lyrics often have a nice accent, though – which also keeps things interesting – on titles that include "Maybe I'm Crazy", "China Girl", "Keep On Moving", "Take Me Home", "Roger", "Night Train Boogie", and "Man From The Moon". Terry Riley's masterpiece, and an enduring classic that never grows old – and which never lapses into the hippy dippyness of some of his other work! The piece features 53 short musical passages, played in an order defined by the players, in minimal repetition, moving in and out of phase synchronicity – ever shifting, turning, and drifting – all to create a remarkable tapestry of sound, texture, and melody. This recording of the work is still the best, and it was produced with excellent care by David Behrman, as part of Columbia's great "music of our time" series. Massively heavy sounds from A Bolha – a Brazilian group who were previously known as The Bubbles, and backed up Gal Costa during the Tropicalia years – but who work here in a fuzzy, bassy groove that's totally great – definitely an heir to the headier sounds of the UK scene at the start of the 70s! The guitars are definitely in full force here, but the basslines drive things along strongly too – echoing some of the Peruvian sounds of the time, but with a bit more Brazilian sophistication – and definitely a musical echo of lessons learned during Tropicalia, even though the set's a fully instrumental one. Organ also figures in the mix too – and titles include "Bye My Friend", "Razao De Existir", "Um Passo A Frente", "A Esfera", and "Neste Rock Forever". A long-overdue full length album from Ace Of Cups – a really unusual female group from the Bay Area scene of the late 60s – but one who never hit the heights of their bigger San Francisco contemporaries! The girls have this really great look on the back – kind of flower power, but with a bit more charm – a quality that comes through in the music, with is often more garagey than trippy – but which also has a way of putting forth female vocals and honest ideas that might not flourish this strongly for similar groups until the post-punk years. That approach makes the whole thing a truly timeless collection of tracks – of the sort that maybe resonate more strongly today than they did back in the 60s. Terry Allen has always been one of the most enigmatic figures in Texas music – but the work included here might well be some of his most compelling – even if it is a bit far from the straighter country of his start! Allen's always been a very narrative songwriter – and here, he takes that form one further – in a series of radio plays and longer audio narratives, most of which intersperse sung passages with spoken bits, sound effects, and beautiful music as well! These aren't any sort of sleepy, too-prosaic works – but instead, the sort of material that's always had us link Allen's music with the books of Barry Gifford or Barry Hannah – instantly evocative, and with a vision for storytelling that's completely captivating – a journey begun on his Juarez album, and really extended here. The special package features the first vinyl appearance of a few of these pieces – and 3CDs of music that contain the complete "Pedal Steel", "Torso Hell", "Bleeder", "Dugout", and "Reunion (A Return To Juarez)". Also features a great 28 page booklet on all the material! (Folk/Country, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

The ensemble features Latin Soul maestro Larry Harlow on piano, organ, and percussion – working with a rock-based group that still has lots of jazzy touches on their instrumentation. Steve Cropper produced the set – but in New York, not Memphis – and the whole thing explodes with a rich range of musical influences, all bubbling together in one pot! Includes the funky rock tracks "Soul Food" and "Forget It I Got It", plus "Endless Night", "Sunday Lady", "Home Groan", "Chocolate Pudding", and "Gotta Find Her". LP, Vinyl record album

Overlooked later work from America – not the huge AM radio hits from the time when the group was a trio, and produced by George Martin – but instead, material from a point when they'd trimmed down to a duo, and really found a great way to move their music forward! The approach here still has all the harmonic interplay of before, and as the albums move on, older AOR modes get shed for some slightly more contemporary styles – but still with that kind of golden glow that always made the America approach a lot stronger than most of their contemporaries! Songs are nicely understated, as is the production – and if, like us, you're a fan of the group with a love that goes way deeper than the hits, then you'll find plenty to love here. The package features six full albums, each in original album-styled sleeves – with the releases Silent Letter, Alibi, View From The Ground, Your Move, Perspective, and In Concert. CD

Really great work by The Association – a back-to-basics effort that has the group handling most of the instrumentation themselves, in a way that often gives the set a surprisingly intimate feel! Sure, these are the guys who virtually invented candy-coated Sunshine Pop – but they're also a heck of a great group at the core, and move here into some of the looser, more relaxed modes of the Warner Brothers scene at the time – a setting that really helps them bring a hell of a lot of personality to the music. Harmony vocals still soar out beautifully when needed, and the arrangements and songwriting show a lot more signs of their association with the hip LA scene of the 60s – a maturation that really pushes their sound forward in a wonderful way. One of the greatest records of all time – and don't you forget it! Despite the countless lines of type that have been written about this record, nothing does it full justice like an all-through listen – something we're reminded of every time we put this one on the turntable, which is a heck of a lot over the years! Brian Wilson busted his ass making this little gem – and the rest of the world, and the band, were never the same again – awash in harmonies that most other groups tried to match, set to themes of young loss, longing, and frustration that really mark an emotional development – not just in the Beach Boys, but in pop music in general. And although some of the tracks are ones you've heard a million times on oldies stations, they somehow resonate together much more strongly here – taking on new meaning as the smaller elements of each song come into constellation with each other – creating a complicated tapestry of feelings set to near-godlike orchestrations. Added instrumentation is used wonderfully – never overdone, but with orchestral passages that can really hammer home the best musical moments – and titles include "I Want You", "Because", "You Never Give Me Your Money", "Golden Slumbers", "The End", "Her Majesty", "Polythene Pam", and "Sun King". BeatlesPlease Please Me ... CD
Apple, 1963. Used ... $5.99
An overstuffed album of early greatness – served up with a classic image of the Fab Four on the cover! The tunes are a mix of Lennon/McCartney originals and American soul and rock numbers that are reinterpreted wonderfully by the group – in ways that perfectly show why, unlike most of their contemporaries, The Beatles weren't just trying for slavish imitation of American authenticity – and instead were already taking off with new ideas inspired by the music! Titles include "Please Please Me", "Love Me Do", "Misery", "Anna", "I Saw Her Standing There", "Boys", "Baby IT's You", "Do You Want To Know A Secret", "Twist & Shout", "A Taste Of Honey", and "Chains". A landmark leaping-off point for The Beatles – and a record that really paved the way for countless new ideas to come! The mix of catchy pop and freer ideas here is really wonderful – tunes that introduce a whole new mature world in mainstream music – yet manage to have all the catchy complexity of the earlier years too. Production, songwriting, and delivery is superb – and titles include "Norwegian Wood", "Think For Yourself", "The Word", "Girl", "I'm Looking Through You", and "Run For Your Life"". Beaver & KrauseGandharva ... LP
Warner, 1971. Near Mint- ... $7.99
A cool mixture of rock and electronics – a perfect example of the Beaver & Krause team at their best! The ensemble on this one is bigger than usual, and the players includes jazz musicians like Mike Bloomfield, Gerry Mulligan, and Howard Roberts – but Beaver & Krause still play a lot of moog, though, and the songs are pretty groovy – although a little short. Side 2 was recorded at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Titles include "Soft/White", "Walkin By The River", "Walkin", "Nine Moons In Alaska", "Bright Shadows", and "Short Film For David". Beaver & KrauseIn A Wild Sanctuary/Gandharva/All Good Men ... CD
Warner/Righteous (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99
A trio of classics from this electronic duo – all brought together in a single set! First up is In A Wild Sanctuary – one of the best records ever from Beaver and Krause – largely because there's not so much noodling! This one features the pair on moog and organ, with help from Dave Grusin on piano, Milt Holland on percussion, Howard Roberts on guitar, and Bud Shank on reeds. The sound isn't jazz at all – but more a mix of spacey grooves and bubbling bits, with much more of a song-like structure than on other records. There's a few nice cuts here that almost hit a groove, and even when they don't, they still have a nice stripped down moogy sound that's very pleasing. Titles include "Spaced", "Salute To The Vanishing Bald Eagle", "People's Park", "Walking Green Algae Blues", and "Another Part Of Time". Gandharva is a cool mixture of rock and electronics – a perfect example of the Beaver & Krause team at their best! All Good Men is a higher concept album than usual for the team of Beaver & Krause – a record that still features plenty of cool moog and electronics by the pair, but which also has them teamed up with arranger Jimmie Haskell in a set of tunes that mixes older themes with original numbers! A fair bit of tracks here have vocals – either by Krause, or by female vocalists Cris Williamson, Adrienne Anderson, or Elisabeth Wilson – plus the "celestial choir" on a few tracks. There's a hearkening back here that's a bit confused at some moments – mixing Scott Joplin with the then-common apology to Native American mode – but things sound best on the original numbers, which have picked up a groove a bit more than before, and even have some nice warmer tones we really like. Titles include the spacey spinner "Between The Sun & The Rain", plus "Loves Of Col Evol", "Sweet Williams", "Bluebird Canyon Stomp", "Looking Back Now", "Child Of Morning Sun", and "All Good Men". It's the third installment in this series, but the Chess Records classics are still going strong – and are maybe even better, given that the music's getting more obscure, and also features some instrumentals too! Players include Willie Dixon on bass, Johnny Johnson on piano, Matt Murphy on guitar, and Eddie Hurdy on drums! Titles include "Hey Pedro", "My Little Love Light", "House Of Blue Lights", "County Line", "Blue On Blue", "Ingo", "St Louis Blues", "Broken Arrow", "Rolli Polli", "Downbound Train", "Worried Life Blues", and "Man & The Donkey". Chess, Early 60s. Very Good ... $19.99
The title's certainly straightforward and to the point – but then again, there's not a lot to say about this one except that it's pure Chuck Berry all the way through! The album may well be one of Chuck's most -hit filled, as it's overflowing with classics like "Rock & Roll Music", "Maybellene", "Roll Over Beethoven", "Johnny B Goode", and "Back In The USA" – but it also includes some other numbers like "Let It Rock", "Come On", and "Round & Round". Big Star#1 Record ... LP
Ardent/Craft, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... On February 7, 2020
The amazing first album from Big Star – a set that came out of nowhere, made hardly a ripple on the charts, yet went onto crash in big waves of sound for generations to come! The style here is unlike thing else before – hardly what you'd expect from the group's Memphis roots or Alex Chilton's previous performances – yet the group's music has become a generation-defining sound in the way it blends southern inflections with harder rock influences, and a lean, gritty quality that's arguably in a late 70s space between punk and power pop. Every element is wonderful – guitars that are powerful, but never indulgent – vocals that are moving, but never overly emotive – and a balance between sensitive and searing moments that even The Replacements could never hope to match. A landmark all the way through – with tracks that include "Feel", "Ballad Of El Goodo", "In The Street", "The India Song", "When My Baby's Beside Me", "Give Me Another Chance", "Don't Lie To Me", "Thirteen", "Watch The Sunrise", and "Try Again". Birds Of A FeatherBirds Of A Feather – The Page One Recordings (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Page One/RPM (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
An album that's maybe best remembered for its connection with the world of the young Elton John – as the man himself plays piano on the record, and also contributed a number of songs – but a set that's also a standout achievement from sisters Doreen and Irene Chanter! The duo are British, but sing together in a way that clearly draws a lot of inspiration from southern soul – that version of the music that you'd find refracted through a British prism on records like Honky Chateau or Tumbleweed Connection – but coming through nicely in the girls' own songs too. Production is great – nicely understated, even when full – and the main focus is on the vocals, which are surprisingly soulful throughout. Titles include "Take Me To The Pilot", "Border Song", "Leaving The Ghetto", "Country Comfort", "All God's Children Got Soul", "One More Time", "Take The World", "Bad Side Of The Moon", and a cool cover of "Gimme Shelter" that's almost got a Motown vibe! CD features two bonus tracks – "Blacksmith Blues" and "Sing My Song & Pray". CD

Cilla BlackCilla/In My Life (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Parlophone/SFE (UK), 1965/1974. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
Two key albums from England's legendary Cilla Black – back to back in a single set, and with 26 bonus tracks too! First up is the amazing 1965 debut, Cilla – a record that maybe draws even more heavily on American soul music than some of Dusty Springfield's early work – all given some impeccable handling in the studio by arranger Johnny Scott, with a bit of help from Johnny Spence, and the record's producer, George Martin. Tunes are a great blend of American pop tracks and more off-beat numbers – done in that strangely syncopated mode that always provided a perfect counterpoint for Cilla's vocals – percolating the tracks wonderfully, and keeping things nice and clean, in a way that you don't always find in her later records. Titles include "Baby It's You", "Goin Out Of My Head", "Every Little Bit Hurts", "This Empty Place", "Come To Me", "Dancing In The Street", and "Whatcha Gonna Do Bout It". In My Life is the first set in the second chapter of Cilla Black's years with EMI – and her first record without George Martin at the production helm, too! The styles open up with a lot more contemporary 70s elements than some of Black's previous records – and there's a fair bit of keyboard work to create these warmer currents underneath Cilla's always-strong lead vocals. Titles include "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song", "Someone", "Daydreamer", "Everything I Own", "Baby We Can't Go Wrong", "Let Him In", "Like A Song", and "I Believed It All". 2CD set features lots of bonus tracks – including "Changes", "From The Inside", "Alfie Darling", "He Was A Writer", "I'll Still Love You", "Little Bit Of Understanding", "Heatwave", "Anything You Might Say", and the full mono mix of the debut album. ✨✧ Black SabbathBlack Sabbath ... LP
Warner, 1970. Very Good- ... $12.99
Huge, dark, and heavy – an album of mythical proportions, and that's a lot to say for a mainstream album – especially one that crossed over as big as this one! It would be hard to imagine the modern rock landscape without this album or group, who provided the template for so much music to follow – and the soundtrack to many bong-fueled excursions to the dark side – a huge legacy in sound, but one that may well still be best begun on this landmark self-titled album! A fantastic collection of work from electronic wizard Tim Blake – a set that's a nice counterpart to albums under his own name, as it also features singles, work with other groups, and some rare archive material that's especially nice! CDs 1 and 2 bring together Tim's issued legacy of the 70s, plus bits from later years too – including work with Gong on "The Octave Doctors & The Crystal Machine" and "Other Side Of The Sky", "Surf" with Saratoga Space Messengers, and "Lighthouse" with Hawkwind – plus his own tracks "Midnight", "Synthese Intemporel", "Passage Sur La Cite Des Revelations", "Who's Gonna Win The War", "A Return To The Clouds", "Waiting For Nati", "Jacuzzi Surfing", "Flating", "Byzance (live)", "Absent Friends", and "Tide Of The Century". CD3 features really great archive material – "Ionic Clouds 2", "Psychedelic Springs", "Forteresse/Crystal Mirrors To Infinity", "Oming In", "Mirrors Of Light", "Metro Poly Train", and "Tide Of The Century (live)". Blood Sweat & Tears3 ... LP
Columbia, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $1.99
Blood Sweat & Tears are really stretching out here – working their already-famous magic through a range of great tunes, both originals and covers – and coming up with some great longer-form expressions of their sound in the process! David Clayton-Thomas is firmly in the lead on vocals – but at points, the instrumentation almost takes over even more – especially on some of the jazz-heavy jam numbers that would go onto shape generations of high school and college music ensembles! Side two features the excellent "Symphony For The Devil/Sympathy For The Devil" suite – and other cuts include "He's A Runner", "The Battle", "Lucretia MacEvil", "Lonesome Suzie", "Fire & Rain", "40,000 Headmen", and "Hi De Ho".
