Electric Peanut Butter CompanyElectric Peanut Butter Company – Trans-Atlantic Psych Classics Vol 1 ... LP
Ubiquity, 2015. New Copy 2LP ... $16.99 19.98
Sweet and salty psych-soul-rock-funk from Adrian Quesada and Shawn Lee, working together as The Electric Peanut Butter Company! They're a company of just 2, handling every aspect themselves, but if you if ever heard anything by either party, you know this is going to have a huge sound. Lots of fuzzed out psych funk touches on this one – a mix of heady instrumentals and some fun vocal numbers. Shawn handles the singing, and the duo are both multi-instrumentalists and leftfield funk geniuses – managing to work with myriad influences without sounding exactly like anyone but themselves. The drums, guitars and keyboards are masterful here, but there's a lot of cool instrumental and production touches throughout. Vol 1 is actually the duo's second album – the first was Vol 2 (naturally!) – and it delivers on the diverse debut, and then some! Includes "Flexi Funk", "Beer Good", "Spread The Jam", "Stealio", "Tennis Elbow", "Mister Pink", "Austin City Limiter", "Go Go Go", "Damn Skippy", "Jenn Wu", "Fat Budda" and more. ✨✧ Small FacesComplete Atlantic Recordings (Playmates/78 In The Shade – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two later Small Faces albums – back to back on a single set, with bonus tracks too! First up is Playmates – a late 70s gem from the revived version of the Small Faces – a group who seem to have gone through the same maturity and richer understanding of their roots as the Faces – but who come across here in an even more sophisticated way! Steve Marriott's at the helm – on guitar and vocals – and has this understated approach that's a great change from the early days – as if he's got nothing to prove, but is completely confident in his way of putting a tune over – which makes the slight twang of most of these numbers wonderfully charming, and surprisingly solid. Titles include "High & Happy", "Saylarvee", "Find It", "Lookin For A Love", "Playmates", "Never Too Late", and "Tonight". 78 In The Shade is from 1978, a year when the reborn Small Faces were still sounding plenty darn great! The album follows nicely from the previous Playmates – with the strong rootsy undercurrents as that one, way more than in the group's earlier music – produced tightly, but still at a level that's free from commercial fluff or any too-easy attempts at a hit. Steve Marriott's presence in the lead is great – the the overall presentation is surprisingly free of hoke, and the album falls somewhere in the territory of the best solo material by Ronnie Laine, Rod Stewart, or Ron Wood. Titles include "Over Too Soon", "Brown Man Do", "Real Sour", "Filthy Rich", "Stand By Me", and "Let Me Down Gently". CD features the bonus tracks "Kayoed By Luv" and "Hungry & Looking". CD

✨✧ Dusty SpringfieldComplete Atlantic Singles 1968 to 1971 (ruby red vinyl pressing) (2021 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Atlantic/Real Gone, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... On November 26, 2021
Dusty Springfield on Atlantic Records – a match made in heaven, and one that's presented here perfectly in a batch of two dozen tracks that are all served up in their original mono mixes for 45rpm seven inch singles! Dusty had already been one of the most soulful singers on the UK scene in the 60s – and her Philips recordings are real favorites of ours – but when she moved to Atlantic, the label gave her some key soul-based backings – in Memphis, Philly, and Muscle Shoals – plus some great New York sessions too. Only eight of these mono versions have ever been on CD before – and the whole thing's presented with great sound and notes on this key period in Dusty's career – alongside tracks that include "Silly Silly Fool", "Brand New Me", "Bad Case Of The Blues", "That Old Sweet Roll", "Willie & Laura Mae Jones", "Haunted", "What Do You Do When Love Dies", "Son Of A Preacher Man", "Just A Little Lovin", "Breakfast In Bed", "I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore", "So Much Love", "What Good Is I Love You", and "Nothing Is Forever". (Note: This item is not for sale online until 7:00am on Saturday, November 27. It is in limited supply – and by nature of the Record Store Day rules it will be offered for sale first to customers who visit the Dusty Groove retail outlet in Chicago the morning of Friday, November 26. It will not be pre-sold or reserved in any way. However, after 7:00am on November 27 we will offer up whatever we have left for sale online.) (Vocalists, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

That's a Texas image on the cover, which is pretty fitting for the sound of Alamo – as they've got a really heady brew of psych, hard rock, and southern elements – all forged together with a sound that would have been right at home on early 70s Capricorn Records! The group are part of that wave of artists who grew up in the shaggier side of the garage and psych undergrounds of the late 60s, then moved forward with a fuller, more carefully conceived sound – captured here beautifully in sessions recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis, which really illuminate all their great work on guitar and organ, while still keeping things very lean overall. Ken Woodley handles the vocals and keys, Larry Raspberry the guitar – and titles include "Get The Feelin", "Question Raised", "The World We Seek", "Soft & Gentle", "Got To Find Another Way", and "Happiness Is Free". ✨✧ Jon AndersonOlias Of Sunhillow (180 gram pressing) (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Atlantic/Esoteric (UK), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really beautiful solo album from Jon Anderson – best known as the lead singer of Yes, stepping out here with a set that matches the solo projects of Chris Squire and Steve Howe from the same time! Yet unlike those efforts, this one is truly a solo recording – as Anderson not only sings, but handles all the instruments himself – keyboards, guitars, and everything else – folded together in a sound that's very faithful, thanks to work from Mike Dunne, who'd handled a lot of the sound for recordings by Yes! Given that Anderson's not an instrumental virtuoso, like some of his bandmates, the record is a nice change from some of the side-long power jams of mid 70s Yes – tunes that together tell a story, but which have a lyrical, personal vibe that also really suits the charms of Jon's vocals. The set feels nicely like a mid 70s side-chapter of Yes – in ways that are different than the solo records by Howe and Squire – and titles include "Ocean Song", "To The Runner", "Flight Of The Moorglade", "Solid Space", "Dance Of Rampart/Olias", and "Meeting/Sound Out The Galleon". Roy BuchananLoading Zone ... LP
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
One of those 70s rock albums that seems to turn up in a fair bit of collections of hip soul and jazz – a bit like the work of Harvey Mandel, and with a similar blend of blues rock currents with farther-reaching ideals! Roy Buchanan is spectacular on the guitar here – the kind of player who almost could have fronted a bigger arena rock group, given his chops – but who choses instead to keep things close to the chest, with the more down to earth vibe of his look on the cover – even though his playing here is pretty outta sight. Roy's got some great help on the album – including some of the MGs on a version of "Green Onions" – plus more guitar from Steve Cropper on other tracks, plus piano from Jan Hammer, bass from Stanley Clarke, and drums from Narada Michael Walden. Other titles include "Judy", "Your Love", "Done Your Daddy Dirty", "The Circle", and "Hidden". LP, Vinyl record album

Atco/Atlantic, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A seminal collection of work from Buffalo Springfield – a group with a short-lived existence on the LA scene, but an impact that shaped the sound of mainstream rock for many years to come! That effect is no surprise – given that the lineup features a young Neil Young, Stephen Stills, and Richie Furay – moving from folk influences into trippier, headier territory – and paving the way for both classic and country rock to come! Here at the start, things are nice and lean – well-penned tunes that pack a heck of a lot into a very short space – given key production help from Jack Nitzsche, Brian Stone, Jim Messina, and even Neil Young himself. Titles include "For What It's Worth", "Mr Soul", "Broken Arrow", "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Win", "Expecting To Fly", "Go & Say Goodbye", "On The Way Home", "Sit Down I Think I Love You", and "Kind Woman". A really cool version of this classic album from Crosby Stills Nash & Young – one that's almost like looking at the original through a refracted lens! The tracks here are all from early recordings and alternate versions of the work used for the master recording – but they're hardly scratchy demos or unfinished cuts – as they represent the superquartet working through these tunes in a wonderful way, crafting the magic that became the classic record! Titles include "Know You Got To Run", "Cary On (early alt mix)", "Teach Your Children (early version)", "Woodstock (alt vocals)", "Deja Vu (early alt mix)", "Our House (early version)", "4 + 20 (alt take 2)", "Helpless (harmonica version)", and "Almost Cut My Hair (early version)". Bobby DarinInside Out ... LP
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A great little record by Bobby – recorded hot on the heels of his big hit recording of "If I Were A Carpenter", and with a surprising respect for Tim Hardin and a lot of the other young songwriters of the post-folk years. Keep in mind that Darin was really feeling his mortality at this point, and although it's easy to say that he's becoming a fake folkie, his approach to the material is very sincere – so much so that we're always surprised at how much we like this one. Titles include "Bes Friends", "Darling Be Home Soon", "Hello Sunshine", "Lady Fingers", "Whatever Happened To Happy", and Hardin's "Black Sheep Boy" and "The Lady Came From Baltimore". Some great funky grooves by this legendary British ensemble – featuring excellent keyboard work by Brian Auger, recorded during the period when he was really beginning to stretch out a bit, and hit a much more open-ended kind of sound. Julie Driscoll is still on vocals, singing in her raw sound, but Brian's Trinity group gets a fair number of nice instrumental moments on the set – which are greatly appreciated! The CD brings together all the tracks from the original double LP – and titles include "Light My Fire", "Czechoslovakia", "Finally Found You Out", "In Search Of The Sun", "Ellis Island", "I've Got Life", and "Save The Country". Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1974. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Electric Flag keep on playing – a statement that hardly needs to be made, when you've got a group lineup as strong as this! The album's a bit later in the combo's vintage, but actually seems to have the individual members finding more focus in the company of each other than they might have on their own – really focused, balanced sounds from Buddy Miles on drums, Nick Gravenites on guitar, and Roger Troy on bass – all of whom provide lead vocals at some point – alongside the sweet keyboards of Barry Goldberg and guitars of Mike Bloomfield! The quintet's a supergroup who clearly love working together – really coming up with something that sounds way more like a group effort instead of a bunch of egos in the studio – a great Cali sense of collaboration, on titles that include "Sweet Soul Music", "Make Your Move", "Lonely Song", "The Band Kept Playing", "Talkin Won't Get It", "Inside Information", and "Earthquake Country". Peter Gabriel gets a bit bolder and more confident here in his solo role – coming out with some of the bite of his Rael character from years back, but with a tighter, more focused mode that's pretty darn great! You can hear the early touch of the styles that would wander too strongly into the wrong territory a decade later – but here, things are all pretty darn fresh – wrapped around song themes that feel like very new ones for Gabriel, in ways that almost have you feeling him pick and choose the topics as the record moves on. Production is tight, but never too uptight – and titles include "On The Air", "DIY", "Exposure", "Animal Magic", "Flotsam & Jetsam", "Perspective", and "White Shadow". LP, Vinyl record album

An overlooked gem from Genesis – a record that maybe forms a perfect bridge between their early concept years and the tighter mode that drove them into the 80s – and a set that really has the trio version of the group finding their way forward! There's some of the catchiness of Abacab to come, but there's also more of a sense of scope – that long form instrumental exploration that Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks continued from the early years – honed into more focus, and driven by the increasingly strong drum talents of Phil Collins! Hall & OatesAbandoned Luncheonette ... LP
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A wonderful step forward for the team of Hall & Oates – and a set that has them moving more into soul than ever before! The album's a tremendous collaboration with the legendary Arif Mardin, who takes the pair's well-crafted vocals into territory that's much more slinkily soulful than some of their previous records – that sound that was always lurking in the background, never quite right, but which emerges here fully in that classic 70s Hall & Oates mode. Daryl and John seem to harmonize more here than before, and the backings are still somewhat rockish, but have a warmth that really suits their singing. We can't argue with the sublime brilliance of "She's Gone", one of those tracks that we've heard a bazillion times, but never cease to respect – and other titles include "Everytime I Look At You", "Had I Known You Better Then", "When The Morning Comes", and "Laughing Boy". ✨✧ Iron ButterflyIn-A-Gadda-Da-Vida ... CD
Atlantic, 1968. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The album that rocked a million dorm rooms back in the 60s – and for good reason, too – given that the title track is a side-long, totally jamming monster – the kind of track that was really revolutionary at the time, and which still has a hell of an impact all these many years later! "In A Gadda Da Vida" was shortened to a single – with the big hook intact – but this classic album version runs for 17 minutes in length, and has the group doing all these cool jams with their instruments – all the animals in the garden of Eden talking to each other (or at least that's what our addled teenaged minds always thought!) Shorter tracks are mighty nice too – a heady, heavy brew of Hammond and fierce guitar from Erik Brann, on cuts all penned by group leader Doug Ingle. Titles include "Termination", "My Mirage", "Flowers & Roses", and "Most Anything You Want". CD

King CrimsonIn The Court Of The Crimson King ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $44.99
An album so heavy, it blew plenty of minds when first released at the end of the 60s! This set's the first-ever utterance from the King Crimson empire – the initial outing of the group, which featured Greg Lake on vocals, and lots of airy, darkly atmospheric guitar from the legendary Robert Fripp! The song structure is quite unusual – and the overall feel is less academically tangled than some of the later records – a feature that makes this album much more sought out by mainstream rockers looking for an intro to the group than some of the later sets. Yet having said that, there's also a pretty amazing approach here – somewhat obtuse, and definitely not looking for any radio edit hits – more just magical musings from a very unique ensemble. Peter Sinfield contributed the lyrics, which are sung by Lake – and Michael Giles handles drums and percussion, while Ian MacDonald plays flute, sax, keyboards, and more. Titles include "Moonchild", "21st Century Schizoid Man", "I Talk To The Wind", "Epitaph", and "Court Of The Crimson King". LP, Vinyl record album
(Late 70s green and red Rockefeller label pressing with Warner text. Cover has light wear and a title sticker.)

Spacey sounds from out of the ether – Kraftwerk's wonderful tribute to radio, spun out in the same spare electronics they used to give some love to the computer, too! The album's the first by the group to really work as a unified suite of tracks – building up wonderfully over the course of both sides of the record – with themes that return, and bubble through other themes – creating a sense of careful, conceptual interplay that really blows away most of their 70s contemporaries – at the same time winning them a much bigger audience in the mainstream. Titles include "Radioland", "Airwaves", "News", "The Voice Of Energy", 'Uranium" and "Ohm Sweet Ohm". LP, Vinyl record album

An incredibly lovely record from Kraftwerk – fashioned along the same suite-like style as Radio Activity, and served up with some haunting and charming tunes throughout! The electronics are quite spare, yet very thoughtful – never a note out of place, as the quartet build their careful efforts together to create a tapestry of surprisingly warm sounds – using just a bit of vocals in really great ways, and almost prefacing a whole generation of UK and Euro pop to come – yet without any of their schmaltz! Titles include "Europe Endless", "Hall of Mirrors", "Abzung", "Franz Schubert", and "Showroom Dummies" – not to mention the awesome title track and electro break number "Metal On Metal". A massive collection of genius from Led Zeppelin – and material that has gone onto become a crucial part of their all-too-small catalog over the years! The work here was all recorded for the BBC in the years 1969 through 1971 – offering up a much wider picture of the group during these formative years, handled by some top-shelf production – which makes these tracks way better than some of the bootlegs and demos that fans had to rely on before these sides hit the record racks. Swan Song/Atlantic (Japan), 1982. Used ... $16.99
The title's an apt one – given that the record was the end of the tremendous run of records from Led Zeppelin – issued after the death of legendary drummer John Bomham – but the set's also way more than just an endpoint, as many of the tracks return to the group's beginning – and bring back unheard sounds from early 70s sessions! There's a nice criss-crossing of styles here – from the rawness of the earliest records, to the refined complexity of the mid 70s – and the album's way more than just an afterthought to the catalog – and is filled with great cuts that include the Bonham showpiece "Bonzo's Montreux", plus "We're Gonna Groove", "Poor Tom", "I Can't Quit You Baby". "Wearing And Tearing", and "Ozone Baby". CD

Swan Song/Atlantic, 1979. Used 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
Led Zeppelin's final album of the 70s – a record that really has them stretching out and trying on some new ideas, yet still holding onto all their genius in the process! Sure, the album's maybe not as iconic as the first few – but from the perspective of decades later, it's a killer – and still blows away just about all the competition – with that Plant/Page magic that still comes through brilliantly, no matter what the setting. There's a few unusual twists and turns – a bit of Latin here, a slight keyboard there – but overall the main focus is still on the lead duo, getting plenty of heavy drums to keep things moving. Titles include the hits "Fool In The Rain" and "All My Love" – plus "In The Evening", "South Bound Suarez", "Carouselambra", and "I'm Gonna Crawl". 2LP set features 7 great bonus tracks – rough mixes of the album in progress, on titles that include "Southbound Piano", "In The Evening", "Blot", "The Hook", "The Epic", and "Fool In The Rain". Overlooked genius from Led Zeppelin – an album that was missed by many the first time around, because of it's tight focus and simplicity! For the set, the group step back just a bit from their more stylistically sprawling tendencies – almost as if they got some of the more ambitious ideas out of their system with Physical Graffiti, or simply wanted to get out there and kick some ass – a back to basics move, and one that sees some tremendous guitar work from Jimmy Page! The album still has some longer songs and complicated changes – this is Led Zeppelin, after all – and the lack of over-played classic rock radio fodder actually makes this one a better listen nowadays than the more iconic albums. Vocals are great from all three singers – Gene Cornish, Eddie Brigati, and Felix Cavaliere – and the rhythms are rock-solid too, often augmented with a bit of Atlantic-styled backings by Arif Mardin, to further enforce the soulfulness of the set. One of the coolest concepts for a record in the 60s – and a set that's the first, and maybe crowning achievement of Vanilla Fudge! The set's mighty trippy – and often offers up very weird, fuzzy remakes of songs that were more mainstream hits for other artists in the 60s – tunes by The Beatles, Zombies, Impressions, and others – taken into really weird new territory by the group's jamming fuzz guitar, stark rhythms, and dark sensibilities. Genius Shadow Morton produced and directed the whole thing – which is one of his crowning achievements, and a great commentary on some of the more mainstream pop he was producing at the time. Young RascalsGroovin' ... LP
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good ... $4.99
Possibly the biggest album ever by The Rascals – a wonderfully tight batch of tunes that has the group hitting perfectly on all their best fronts! Blue eyed soul mixes wonderfully with some rougher garage-styled rock – and the execution here is perfect enough to please listeners on both sides of the fence. Perhaps most noteworthy is the presence of Arif Mardin arrangements on some of the album's key tracks – a factor that really helps the group find their groove, and sparkle even more brilliantly than before. Titles include "Groovin", "If You Knew", "A Girl Like You", "Find Somebody", "I'm So Happy Now", "Sueno", "How Can I Be Sure", and "It's Love". (Soul, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono orange & purple label pressing. Cover has light wear, a hype sticker, and a name in pen on the front and back.)
