Atlantic BridgeAtlantic Bridge (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Dawn/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
A very cool quartet from the British jazz/rock years – but one who were a lot more jazz-based than some of their contemporaries! These guys are all instrumental, and although a number of their tunes are familiar rock standards from the late 60s, they don't play them like rock tunes at all – and instead used them as freewheeling vehicles for solo exploration –r eally stretching out in a mix of acoustic and electric modes that's mighty nice! Leader Mike McNaught plays both Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano – and the group also features Daryl Runswick on bass, Mike Travis on drums and percussion, and Jim Philip on some especially great flute, tenor, and soprano sax – the last of which really soars up beautifully next to the Rhodes! The set is maybe a bit in the mode of some of John Klemmer's electrified work from the same time, but also more British too – although not without a fair degree of soul on the keyboards. Titles include "Dreams", "Rosecrans Boulevard", "Something", "Dear Prudence", and "Childhood Room". (Jazz, Rock) CD

✨✧ Ars NovaSunshine & Shadows ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good ... $24.99
The second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". Atlantic, 1975. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A record that might have been a step into cliche for Alice Cooper – but one that still stands surprisingly strong after all these many years! Sure, the Coop as spook-master is very firmly stated on the cover and title – and yes, the record does feature an appearance from Vincent Price – but all the searing intensity of the group at the start is still firmly in place – produced with groundbreaking genius by Bob Erzin, who almost seems to be laying down a blueprint for later generations that run the gamut from metal to goth to post-punk. Titles include "Black Widow", "Welcome To My Nightmare", "Devil's Food", "Department Of Youth", "Cold Ethyl", "Years Ago", "Escape", and "Only Women Bleed". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic/Rhino, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 21.98
A great document of all this famous harmony trio/quartet were able to achieve during their first few years – a masterful reworking of vocal group modes from earlier rock and soul styles, taken forward towards the 70s with a spirit that's still as powerful today as it was back at the time! These tracks saw so much circulation over the years, it's easy to forget how revolutionary they were – especially when coming from artists who had roots in more familiar rock modes, but who somehow really seemed to rise together in the company of each other. Titles include "Deja Vu", "Suite Judy Blue Eyes", "Ohio", "Teach Your Children", "Our House", "Helplessly Hoping", "Wooden Ships", "Woodstock", "Helpless", "Guinnevere", and "Find The Cost Of Freedom". Everything But The GirlAmplified Heart (25th anniversary editon) ... LP
Atlantic/Buzzin' Fly, 1994. New Copy ... $26.99 28.99
A later masterpiece from the duo of Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt – maybe their strongest record since their early years – and a great way of allowing their always-strong songwriting a chance to find a new sort of groove! In this case, the music is both a step back to the more acoustic colors of their first record or two – and a nod to some of the new rhythms that were coming from the London scene – used here in very subtle but brilliant ways by Watt, who'd soon go on to make some of his own creative sounds in new formats. As always, the vocals of Thorn are breathtaking and heartbreaking in ways we can hardly begin to describe – on titles that include "We Walk The Same Line", "I Don't Understand Anything", "Troubled Mind", "Rollercoaster", "Get Me", "25th December", and "Missing". A surprising charmer from Bryan Ferry – his second solo album away from Roxy Music, and somehow even more focused than the first! The groove here is still very much in a Roxy mode, but tighter, leaner, and with more of a focus on Ferry's captivating vocals. And although a few tracks on the set are covers, there's also some killer Ferry originals that are right up there with the best Roxy Music work on the group's first 5 albums. Titles include "Casanova", "Sea Breezes", "2 HB", "Re-Make/Re-Model", and "It's Only Love" – plus a great reading of "You Go To My Head". LP, Vinyl record album

Allen GinsbergAllen Ginsberg Reads Kaddish – A 20th Century American Ecstatic Narrative Poem ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $49.99
The one-and-only entry in the Verbatum series from Atlantic Records – a proposed spoken word offshoot of the label – but one that only ever issued this fantastic 60s reading by Allen Ginsberg! As you might guess from the cover's beautiful photograph by Richard Avedon, Ginsberg is at the height of his hippie years here – and the poem Kaddish is a freewheeling, spiritually-infused work that is quite different than some of the earlier beat material. Ginsberg draws both on his Jewish roots and his increasing conflict with society for the piece – which is presented here in a lively recording done at Brandeis in 1964. ✨✧ Hall & OatesAbandoned Luncheonette ... LP
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good ... $6.99
A wonderful step forward for the team of Hall & Oates – and a set that has them moving more into soul than ever before! The album's a tremendous collaboration with the legendary Arif Mardin, who takes the pair's well-crafted vocals into territory that's much more slinkily soulful than some of their previous records – that sound that was always lurking in the background, never quite right, but which emerges here fully in that classic 70s Hall & Oates mode. Daryl and John seem to harmonize more here than before, and the backings are still somewhat rockish, but have a warmth that really suits their singing. We can't argue with the sublime brilliance of "She's Gone", one of those tracks that we've heard a bazillion times, but never cease to respect – and other titles include "Everytime I Look At You", "Had I Known You Better Then", "When The Morning Comes", and "Laughing Boy". Atlantic, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A groovy little collection that features a few previously-unissued tracks from the great early years of Hall & Oates at Atlantic Records – plus a few tracks from other label releases as well! The unissued numbers are all from 1973, and done with Arif Mardin's help in the studio – in this warmly swirling groove that really illustrates the way that Hall & Oates were able to pick up the best aspect of Philly soul production, and turn them towards their own blue-eyed lyrics and vocals. These cuts include "It's Uncanny", "I Want To Know You For A Long Time", and "Love You Like A Brother". The set then features some great material from the early Atlantic albums – including "Las Vegas Turnaround", "Can't Stop The Music", "She's Gone", "Lilly", "When The Morning Comes", and "70s Scenario". Iron ButterflyIn-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (deluxe edition) ... CD
Atlantic, 1968. Used ... $4.99
The album that rocked a million dorm rooms back in the 60s – and for good reason, too – given that the title track is a side-long, totally jamming monster – the kind of track that was really revolutionary at the time, and which still has a hell of an impact all these many years later! "In A Gadda Da Vida" was shortened to a single – with the big hook intact – but this classic album version runs for 17 minutes in length, and has the group doing all these cool jams with their instruments – all the animals in the garden of Eden talking to each other (or at least that's what our addled teenaged minds always thought!) Shorter tracks are mighty nice too – a heady, heavy brew of Hammond and fierce guitar from Erik Brann, on cuts all penned by group leader Doug Ingle. Titles include "Termination", "My Mirage", "Flowers & Roses", and "Most Anything You Want" – plus live and single versions of the title track. CD

King CrimsonIn The Court Of The Crimson King ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $19.99
An album so heavy, it blew plenty of minds when first released at the end of the 60s! This set's the first-ever utterance from the King Crimson empire – the initial outing of the group, which featured Greg Lake on vocals, and lots of airy, darkly atmospheric guitar from the legendary Robert Fripp! The song structure is quite unusual – and the overall feel is less academically tangled than some of the later records – a feature that makes this album much more sought out by mainstream rockers looking for an intro to the group than some of the later sets. Yet having said that, there's also a pretty amazing approach here – somewhat obtuse, and definitely not looking for any radio edit hits – more just magical musings from a very unique ensemble. Peter Sinfield contributed the lyrics, which are sung by Lake – and Michael Giles handles drums and percussion, while Ian MacDonald plays flute, sax, keyboards, and more. Titles include "Moonchild", "21st Century Schizoid Man", "I Talk To The Wind", "Epitaph", and "Court Of The Crimson King". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint- ... $34.99
For some folks, this might be the purest moment of sonic genius from King Crimson – a record that has this incredible dynamic range, with ultra-low passages followed by soaring highs – all delivered by a group that might well be one of the most technically skilled that Robert Fripp had put together by the time! Fripp himself handles many guitars and devices – alongside drums from Bill Bruford, viola and violin from David Cross, percussion from Jamie Muir, and superb bass and vocals from John Wetton – who really gives the group a focus and soul that balances out he geekier technical moments. Titles include the soaring two-part title track – plus "Easy Money", "Talking Drum", "Book Of Saturday", and "Exiles". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the heaviest early King Crimson albums – a set that really has the group taking off even more than before – pushing the needles way into the red with their own sort of sonic intensity! The group's a trio this time around – with the legendary Robert Fripp on guitar, really carving out the sound with an edge that's incredibly sharp – plus the great John Wetton on vocals and bass, giving the group an unexpected sense of soul – and lots of mighty drums from Bill Bruford too! Additional instrumentation comes from some cats who really help round out the more complicated edges of the Crimson sound – David Cross on violin, Mel Collins on soprano sax, Marc Charig on cornet, and Ian McDonald on soprano sax. Tracks are all nice and long – and titles include "Starless", "Providence", "One More Red Nightmare", and "Red". LP, Vinyl record album

There's less easy soul elements here, and instead this really compelling fusion of redneck rock and more sophisticated singer-songwriter modes – with Bobby even more fully-voiced and confident than ever – on titles that include "Hot Wood & Coal", "She Made Me A Man", "John The Rollin Man", "He Played The Reals", "Tribute To A Woman", and "Something Unfinished". Swan Song/Atlantic (Japan), 1976. Used Gatefold ... $9.99
Overlooked genius from Led Zeppelin – an album that was missed by many the first time around, because of it's tight focus and simplicity! For the set, the group step back just a bit from their more stylistically sprawling tendencies – almost as if they got some of the more ambitious ideas out of their system with Physical Graffiti, or simply wanted to get out there and kick some ass – a back to basics move, and one that sees some tremendous guitar work from Jimmy Page! The album still has some longer songs and complicated changes – this is Led Zeppelin, after all – and the lack of over-played classic rock radio fodder actually makes this one a better listen nowadays than the more iconic albums. Leiber Stoller Big BandYakety Yak ... LP
Atlantic, Early 60s. Very Good ... $5.99
A very unusual little record, cut at the height of fame for the team of Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller! The session's a rare jazz one from the duo – put together to feature different versions of tunes they'd been penning for acts on Atlantic and some of the other big labels of the late 50s. Work here is all done in a mode that's a bit like the Ray Charles jazz style of the time – big band, but with plenty of R&B influences – and searing horn work from a batch of players who include Al Grey, Frank Foster, Ernie Royal, Thad Jones, Frank Rehak, and Benny Powell. Lieber & Stoller don't play on the record, but direct the tunes with the mentioned flair – although in a way that's a bit looser than their usual work. There's a Basie-esque flair to most numbers, and titles include "Smokey Joe's Cafe", "Hound Dog", "Loving You", "Poison Ivy", "Bazoom", "Black Denim Trousers & Motorcycle Boots", and "Jailhouse Rock". MC5High Time ... LP
Atlantic, 1971. Very Good Gatefold ... $49.99
Motor City madness from the MC5 – a searing batch of work that still has the groups kicking out the jams whenever possible! Guitars are fuzzy, freaky, and full-on – played with plenty of force by Fred Smith and Wayne Cramer, and driven home with some heavy drums by Dennis Thompson – almost a blues into funk approach, via hard rock – and definitely standard-setting work for the time. The album's often overlooked in favor of their debut, but it's well worth seeking out – and features tracks that include "Future/Now", "Skunk (Sonicly Speaking)", "Poison", "Gotta Keep Movin", and "Sister Anne". ✨✧ RascalsFreedom Suite ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $2.99
A double-length set from The Rascals – possibly their most stretched-out exploration of ideas, at least during their initial run for Atlantic Records! The 2LP set features a fair bit of shorter, catchier tunes on the first record – many with some righteous soul overtones – but on the second record, the group really open up – hitting some longer jamming tunes on side three, and moving into a 15 minute instrumental on side four! Vocals are great from all three singers – Gene Cornish, Eddie Brigati, and Felix Cavaliere – and the rhythms are rock-solid too, often augmented with a bit of Atlantic-styled backings by Arif Mardin, to further enforce the soulfulness of the set. Titles include the hit "People Got To Be Free", plus "American The Beautiful", "Any Dance'll Do", "A Ray Of Hope", "Look Around", "Boom", "Heaven", "Cute", "Baby I'm Blue", and "Adrian's Birthday". One of the greatest albums ever from the oft-overlooked Terry Reid – a man who turned down an initial offer to be the lead singer of Led Zeppelin, but went on to record some great albums on his own! The album was Terry's first away from producer Mickie Most – and it's got a much more American vibe than previous efforts – with some nice rootsy touches on guitars (including steel and slide) from the great David Lindley, which really work perfectly with Reid's compellingly raspy vocals – and some slightly funky elements on the bass and drums! Willie Bobo makes a surprising appearance on the title cut "River" – which almost has a Chicano rock groove at times – and other titles include "Dean", "Avenue", "Things To Try", "Live Life", "Dream" and "Milestone". Also includes the bonus tracks "Anyway" and "Funny". CD

CloversTheir Greatest Recordings – The Early Years ... LP
Atco, Early 50s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $7.99
A sweet little collection of great tracks by the legendary Clovers – a group whose sound was a key force in transforming Atlantic Records during the 50s! The Clovers were an incredibly tight, incredibly consistent quintet – possessed of a rich talent for both sweet ballads and raspier groovers, in a way that helped push vocal harmonies much more strongly into an R&B mode than some of the efforts of groups who came before. This set features 14 of the group's best numbers from their early years with Atlantic – including the familiar hits, as well as some nice, lesser-known tracks that show just how strong The Clovers sound was overall. Titles include "Devil Or Angel", "Ting A Ling", "Blue Velvet", "Fool Fool Fool", "One Mint Julep", "Don't You Know I Love You", "Love Potion Number Nine", "Lovey Dovey", "Your Cash Ain't Nothin But Trash", "Hey Miss Fanny", and "Down In The Alley". Pure genius from a group who kept on growing strongly over the relatively short span of their career – maybe under-sung heroes at the time of their release, at least on this side of the Atlantic – but one of the few truly classic groups we can think of from the decade, at least with a recorded legacy this strong! The songs are as creatively distinct as anything every put forth by Morrissey and The Smiths – but in a very unique sort of way, with the guidance of mainman Lawrence firmly guiding the sound with his vocals amidst the wonderful songswirl of Hammond organ and guitar. Titles include "Apple Boutique", "Ivory Past", "Until The Fools Get Wise", "Bitter End", "How Spook Got Her Man", "Christopher Street", "Under A Pale Light", and "Don't Die On My Doorstep". Wynder K FrogShook, Shimmy, & Shake – The Complete Recordings 1966 to 1970 (Sunshine Superfrog/Out Of The Frying Pan/Into The Fire/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
RPM (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
Three full albums of romping organ work from Wynder K Frog – plus lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Sunshine Superfrog – a record with a Donovan reference in the title, but a much more mod set overall – thanks to searing Hammond work from organist Mick Weaver, who was maybe one of the hippest London cats on his instrument at the time! The tunes draw equally from the Hammond soul jazz of artists like Jimmy Smith or Jimmy McGriff, and from the soul instrumental style of the time – particularly the grooves of Stax and Atlantic Records – and the deft work on the keys of the organ show that you hardly need a singer to make these records groove. Titles include "I Feel So Bad", "Blues For A Frog", "Hold On I'm Coming", "Incense", "Feel It", "Dancin Pain", "Mercy", and "Somebody Help Me". Next is Out Of The Frying Pan – a lost Hammond classic from organist Mick Weaver, who famously worked with the group Traffic! This set's a lot different than the work he did in that band, though – as the album's all instrumental, and has a quick-stepping, all-soul sound that's a lot like the best Jimmy McGriff organ jazz albums on Sue Records – mixed with maybe a bit of the mod sound of London at the time! Tunes are tight and short, but pack plenty of punch – and the album also features great work on saxes from Chris Mercer and Dick Heckstall-Smith. Titles include "Green Door", "Bad Eye", "Willie & The Hand Jive", "House That Jack Built", "Gasoline Alley", and "Harpsichord Shuffle". Last up is Into The Fire – which has the group really opening up, laying down some wonderfully jazzy and funky instrumentals with a fuzzy Hammond sound that's really great! Although the set was recorded in the UK, the best cuts have a soulful crossover sound that feels like it should have been recorded during one of the Cadet Concept sessions in Chicago at the same time. One cut has vocals, but the best are the instrumentals – like "Into the Fire", "Howl In Wolf's Clothing", "Hot Salt Beef", "Cool Hand Stanley", and "Why Am I Treated So Bad". The set features lots of bonus tracks from singles and other sources – including "Zooming", "Green Door", "I'm A Man", "Henry's Panter", "Baldy", "Dancing Frog (stereo)", "Happy Jack", "Funky Broadway", "I'll Go Crazy", "A Memory Of Bruce", "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever", and "We Can Work It Out". Ralph McTellAll Things Change – The Transatlantic Anthology 1967 to 1970 ... CD
Transatlantic/Cherry Tree (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $15.99
Beautiful work from Ralph McTell – a British singer with roots in folk music, but an artist who was already finding his own territory by the time of these albums! Unlike other British folkies of the time, who seemed to be heading towards more ancient territory, and were often trying to sound even more old school in their phrasing – McTell was always trying out something new, and moving more towards some of the singer/songwriter territory that a few key American contemporaries were trying at the time. The set brings together three full albums by Ralph for the Transatlantic label – Eight Frames A Second, Spiral Staircase, and My Side Of Your Window – plus the Ralph McTell Revisited album, which features reworked material, as well as some bonus tracks too – all a fantastic summation of Ralph's early years – a time when he was maybe at his best. 51 tracks in all – with titles that include "Nanna's Song", "The Fairground", "Last Train & Ride", "Michael In The Garden", "Clown", "Girl On A Bicycle", "Father Forgive Them", "Are You Receiving Me", "Bright & Beautiful Things", "Daddy's Here", "Terminus", "Suzanne", "Blues In More Than 12 Bars", and "Kew Gardens". Gerry Rafferty/HumblebumsWho Knows What The Day Will Bring – The Complete Transatlantic Recordings 1969 to 1971 (New Humblebums/Open Up The Door/Can I Have My Money Back/bonus tracks) ... CD
Transatlantic/Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
Gerry Rafferty is best known on our shores for one big crossover AOR hit of the late 70s – but overseas in England, his career started much earlier – as you'll hear in this great set of material! The first CD in the set features two albums recorded under the name of The Humblebums – amazing early work from Gerry Rafferty – material that's completely different than his late 70s material that crossed the Atlantic in a bigger way – as the record's got this cool complexity that's not unlike some of the best folk rock experiments that were taking place at the time on Island Records! There's elements of guitar work and songphrasing that maybe also echo the generation of Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, and even John Martyn – but the songs also have some baroque orchestrations at some points, and fuller instrumentation at others – never fully commercial, and always with an acoustic core – and already-wonderful vocals from Raffterty. Titles include "Look Over The Hill & Far Away", "Steamboat Row", "Half A Mile", "My Singing Bird", "Patrick", and "Her Father Don't Lie". Next is the Gerry Rafferty album Can I Have My Money Back – a record that got circulated globally a lot more in the late 70s, to cash in on his rising fame – but which really takes off in a strong way that places him as a key talent in the folk/rock universe of the UK Transatlantic label at the start of the 70s! The songs are tighter and catchier than the acid folk generation – in part because Gerry's vocals are already completely charming, and produced with this compression that hints at Brit modes to come on mid 70s hits – but a lot more down to earth overall. Titles include "New Street Blues", "Mr Universe", "Mary Skeffington", "Make You Break You", "One Drink Down", and "Half A Chance". 2CD set features great notes, and 14 more bonus tracks! CD

Rare EarthDreams/Answers ... LP
Verve, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $49.99
The funky blue-eyed debut of Rare Earth – an early Detroit combination of soul, rock, and funk! The group really sprang to fame on Motown right after this early album for Verve – but this set may be even harder and heavier than any of their later records – produced by Dennis Coffey, with a nice blend of fuzz and funk, at a level that's very much like the best Atlantic sounds from Vanilla Fudge – but much more born from the Detroit scene that could give the world The Stooges and Funkadelic at the same time! Many cuts are soul standards, redone with a heavy-drum style that's pretty great – and some of the originals have more of the psych feel, but are graced by some genuinely soulful vocals, often done in harmony style. Titles include "Mothers Oats", "New Rochelle", "Yesterday On Third Avenue", "Red Apple", "Get Ready", "6-3-4-5", and "Sidewalk Cafe". (Soul, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John RenbournUnpentangled – The Sixties Albums (There You Go/John Renbourn/Bert & John/Another Monday/Watch The Stars/Sir John A Lot Of/bonus tracks) (6CD set) ... CD
Transatlantic/Cherry Tree (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 6CD ... $32.99
A treasure trove of greatness from British folk rock legend John Renbourn – all of his late 60s solo work, done before moving on to greater fame in Pentangle! First up is There You Go – a rare one from singer Dorris Henderson and future Pentangle founder John Rensbourn! Florida born, LA raised singer Dorris Henderson moved to London in 1965 and was soon singing London's folk clubs, where she met Rensbourn. A solid mix of traditionals and then contemporary folk songs – stripped down and honest takes on "Saly Free And Easy", "Cotton Eyed Joe", "Mr Tamborine Man", "Going To Memphis", Something Lonesome", "Mist On The Mountain" and more. This edition includes bonus tracks from a rare 45 – "Hangman" and "Leaves That Are Green". Next is the self-titled John Renbourn from 1965 – a set that would not only establish John's legacy for years to come, but also have a very strong impact upon the role of the guitar on the British scene too! The album's definitely in a mode that owes something to an American folk legacy – but it also really breaks from the past with unusual phrasings and colorings in Renbourn's guitar – certainly with an ear towards ancient English modes, but also at once very fresh and contemporary – a strong precursor to the waves of new acoustic talents that would flow from the UK a few years later, but maybe even more revolutionary – given that John's mostly just working here with his guitar and voice. Bert Jansch adds guitar to a few tracks – and titles include "Song", "Down On The Barge", "Plainsong", "Judy", "Beth's Blues", "Blue Bones", "Train Tune", "Winter Is Gone", and "Noah & Rabbit". Bert & John is a hell of a collaboration between British legends Bert Jansch and John Renbourn – both working here together to completely redefine the sound of their music for the generation to come! This one album may well hold all the sense of subtle power and possibility that was about to flower in the Brit movement often known as "acid folk" – that reworking of older aesthetics with modern conceptions, and doing so mostly with their work on acoustic guitar – quite a feat, given the stripped-down instrumentation of the set! Bert sings a bit – in that incredible style of his – but the real attraction here is the guitar interplay, which is always fresh, never hokey, neither familiar American folk nor forced singer-songwriter backup material. Titles include a wonderful reworking of Charles Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" – plus "Red's Favourite", "Orlando", "Soho", "Piano Tune", "East Wind", "After The Dance", and "The Time Has Come". Another Monday is maybe the most obscure album in the collection – a set that is mostly instrumental, with some completely fantastic work by Renbourn on guitar – but which also features a bit of guest vocals from singer Jacqui McShee – whose warmer presence next to John really makes for a nice pairing. The album's as powerful as it is subtle, really beautiful in its sense of variety – with titles that include "Buffalo", "One For William", "Lost Lover Blues", "Another Monday", "Day At The Seaside", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", and "Waltz". Watch The Stars is another great collaboration with Dorris Henderson – an American singer, but one who moved to London in the 60s – where she cut this rare gem with guitarist John Renbourn! The album's got a righteous vibe that's hipper than the usual folk set – with some traditional tunes and some contemporary material – recorded with that amazing phrasing that made Renbourn's guitar so distinct right from the start, with lots of those jazzy currents we love so much – and which really fit the creative vocal approach of Henderson! Dorris also plays some autoharp, and there's a bit of bass in the backings – although overall the main focus here is on Renbourn's guitar and Henderson's vocals. Titles include "Come Up Horsey", "God Bless The Child", "Watch The Stars", "30 Days In Jail", "Mosaic Patterns", "Tomorrow Is A Long Time", and "There's Anger In This Land". Sir John A Lot Of is perhaps one of the best-known albums from British guitar legend John Renbourn – as it was issued widely in the US, and kept in print for a surprisingly long time over the years! The approach here is slightly different than Renbourn's previous records – a bit in the image presented by the cover, although with maybe not as slavish a sound – as John just uses the whole thing to go a bit more ancient than before, in ways that echo the time travel that the whole British folk scene was taking as the 70s approached. The tunes are done in ways that are really beautiful – still lots of the incredible guitar work that made Renbourn such a standout on the scene – plus flute from jazzman Ray Warleigh, who's very different here than usual – and spare use of finger cymbals, African drums, and glockenspiel by Terry Cox. Titles include "Morgana", "Transfusion", "The Trees They Do Grow High", "Sweet Potato", "Seven Up", and "White Fishes". 6CD box features all records in original artwork sleeves, with a booklet of notes – and bonus tracks that include "Message To Pretty", "The Waggoner's Lad", "Lucky Thirteen", "Blues Run The Game", "The Wildest Pig In Captivity (alt)", "Can't Keep From Crying", "Transfusion (alt)", and "The Leaves Are Green". Mitch Ryder & The Detroit WheelsBreakout ... LP
New Voice, Late 60s. Very Good ... $11.99
Blue-eyed soul from the legendary Mitch Ryder – and pretty darn gritty at that – steeped in styles borrowed from Memphis and Muscle Shoals, and given a bit of a color-blind twist on the Detroit scene of the late 60s! Mitch clearly loves the motor city sound of the 60s, but also takes things to farther points south, too – using elements that would be right at home on Stax or Atlantic Records, and coming up with a crossover sound that had his recorded almost ending up in more soul collections over the years than rock ones! Production is by pop maestro Bob Crewe, but it's surprisingly unadorned compared to some of Crewe's other work of the time – and the album bristles with sock-soul instrumentation from the Detroit Wheels, and loud, proud vocals from Mitch. There's a bit of garaey guitars in the mix, too – making for a mighty nice hybrid of styles – and titles include "Shakin With Linda", "You Get Your Kicks", "Any Day Now", "I Need Help", "Little Latin Lupe Lu", "Walkin The Dog", "I Had It Made", and the classic "Breakout".
