Ars NovaFields Of People – The Elektra & Atlantic Recordings 1968/1969 (Ars Nova/Sunshine & Shadows) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of great albums from the overlooked Ars Nova – back to back in a single set! First up is the 1968 self-titled Ars Nova – a wonderful little set of post-folk rock – with lots of lovely baroque touches! Ars Nova were really short-lived group – known for only two rare records – but they've got a sound that perfectly sums up a generation! There's a wonderful LA late 60s sound here – somewhere between Love and The Byrds, with the baroque touches of the former and the best country influences of the latter – all wrapped up in earnest, honest songwriting that makes even the ambitious moments come across with surprising charm. A true lost relic, and the kind of record that should be in any late 60s cannon! Titles include "Album In Your Mind", "Pavan For My Lady", "General Clover Ends A War", "And How Am I To Know", "Fields Of People", "Automatic Love", and "Song To The City". Sunshine & Shadows is the second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". Atlantic, 1984. Near Mint- ... $5.99
Laura Branigan gets some help here on arrangements from Harold Faltermeyer – who makes things a bit funkier than you might expect – although still very much in the kind of poppy style he used famously on some big 80s soundtracks! The mode works well for Laura – whose approach is always on the soulful side of pop, but still filled here with all the sense of drama that made Branigan huge on the charts at the time. Titles include "Heart", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", "The Lucky One", "Self Control", and "Satisfaction". Atlantic/Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Stunning work from one of our favorite vocal groups of all time – one of the most dynamic acts of their generation, and a group whose pyrotechnics definitely earn them the "rocks" in the title! You might know some of the few big hits by The Coasters – but if you dig deep into their music, they will really blow your mind – as they've got this never-ending sense of wit, amazing vocal dexterity, and a raw, soulful sound that gets perfect presentation here from the team of Lieber & Stoller, who handled most of the songs within! The package offers up way more than most other Coasters collections, and comes with fantastic Bear Family presentation – in support of a whopping 33 tracks that include "Three Cool Cats", "Girls Girls Girls (parts 1 & 2)", "Young Blood", "Down In Mexico", "Stewball", "Dance", "Wait A Minute", "I'm A Hog For You", "The Shadow Knows", "Teach Me How To Shimmy", "Thumbin A Ride", "Bad Blood", "Keep On Rolling", "Sorry But I'm Gonna Have To Pass", "Gee Golly", and "Run Red Run". A record that might have been a step into cliche for Alice Cooper – but one that still stands surprisingly strong after all these many years! Sure, the Coop as spook-master is very firmly stated on the cover and title – and yes, the record does feature an appearance from Vincent Price – but all the searing intensity of the group at the start is still firmly in place – produced with groundbreaking genius by Bob Erzin, who almost seems to be laying down a blueprint for later generations that run the gamut from metal to goth to post-punk. Titles include "Black Widow", "Welcome To My Nightmare", "Devil's Food", "Department Of Youth", "Cold Ethyl", "Years Ago", "Escape", and "Only Women Bleed". LP, Vinyl record album

Edison Electric BandBless You Dr Woodward ... CD
Atlantic/Water, 1970. New Copy ... $7.99 17.99
The only album ever issued by this very groovy group – a quartet who wandered from Philly to San Francisco in the late 60s – where they clearly picked up the right sort of energy to let their freak flag fly! Yet these guys aren't totally Bay Area, either – as they've got more of the east coast roots that echo their start in the Philly scene a few years before – almost that mix of tightness and hipness that graced some of the best Long Island groups who were finding their way into New York during the same generation. There's plenty going on here – especially some nice songwriting, and a way of appreciating influences from blues and soul music – yet never coming across as a blues rock band at all. Titles include "Baby Leroy", "Over The Hill", "Ship Of The Future", "West Wind", "Royal Fool", "Lebanese Packhorse", and "Smokehouse". CD

✨✧ Iron ButterflyIn-A-Gadda-Da-Vida ... CD
Atlantic, 1968. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The album that rocked a million dorm rooms back in the 60s – and for good reason, too – given that the title track is a side-long, totally jamming monster – the kind of track that was really revolutionary at the time, and which still has a hell of an impact all these many years later! "In A Gadda Da Vida" was shortened to a single – with the big hook intact – but this classic album version runs for 17 minutes in length, and has the group doing all these cool jams with their instruments – all the animals in the garden of Eden talking to each other (or at least that's what our addled teenaged minds always thought!) Shorter tracks are mighty nice too – a heady, heavy brew of Hammond and fierce guitar from Erik Brann, on cuts all penned by group leader Doug Ingle. Titles include "Termination", "My Mirage", "Flowers & Roses", and "Most Anything You Want". CD

✨✧ King CrimsonIn The Court Of The Crimson King ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An album so heavy, it blew plenty of minds when first released at the end of the 60s! This set's the first-ever utterance from the King Crimson empire – the initial outing of the group, which featured Greg Lake on vocals, and lots of airy, darkly atmospheric guitar from the legendary Robert Fripp! The song structure is quite unusual – and the overall feel is less academically tangled than some of the later records – a feature that makes this album much more sought out by mainstream rockers looking for an intro to the group than some of the later sets. Yet having said that, there's also a pretty amazing approach here – somewhat obtuse, and definitely not looking for any radio edit hits – more just magical musings from a very unique ensemble. Peter Sinfield contributed the lyrics, which are sung by Lake – and Michael Giles handles drums and percussion, while Ian MacDonald plays flute, sax, keyboards, and more. Titles include "Moonchild", "21st Century Schizoid Man", "I Talk To The Wind", "Epitaph", and "Court Of The Crimson King". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ King CrimsonLarks' Tongues In Aspic ... LP
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
For some folks, this might be the purest moment of sonic genius from King Crimson – a record that has this incredible dynamic range, with ultra-low passages followed by soaring highs – all delivered by a group that might well be one of the most technically skilled that Robert Fripp had put together by the time! Fripp himself handles many guitars and devices – alongside drums from Bill Bruford, viola and violin from David Cross, percussion from Jamie Muir, and superb bass and vocals from John Wetton – who really gives the group a focus and soul that balances out he geekier technical moments. Titles include the soaring two-part title track – plus "Easy Money", "Talking Drum", "Book Of Saturday", and "Exiles". LP, Vinyl record album

A massive collection of genius from Led Zeppelin – and material that has gone onto become a crucial part of their all-too-small catalog over the years! The work here was all recorded for the BBC in the years 1969 through 1971 – offering up a much wider picture of the group during these formative years, handled by some top-shelf production – which makes these tracks way better than some of the bootlegs and demos that fans had to rely on before these sides hit the record racks. The third in Led Zeppelin's spectacular run of early albums – each one either matching or topping its predecessor, depending on one's personal favorite – and a record with an influence that's as massive as the sound! The record's got a pair of of Zep's best-remembered songs in "Immigrant Song" and their take on the traditional "Gallows Pole", but the whole thing is great – and a great balance of their earlier bombast with a lot more acoustic moments. Hard rock perfected! It's around Led Zeppelin IV that you can easily say that the group moved up from being incredibly great to flat-out legendary – really in a class by themselves, although maybe they'd already reached that point with the sublime sounds of the previous three records! There's a darkness here – and a sense of magick too – an eerie new energy that still has all the balls-out rock power of before, but which has the group moving into this heady territory that's really all their own. Every song is a classic – and tracks include "Black Dog", "Stairway To Heaven", "Rock And Roll", "Misty Mountain Hop", "When The Levee Breaks", "Going To California", "Four Sticks", and "Battle Of Evermore". ✨✧ Led ZeppelinPresence ... LP
Swan Song/Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $24.99
Overlooked genius from Led Zeppelin – an album that was missed by many the first time around, because of it's tight focus and simplicity! For the set, the group step back just a bit from their more stylistically sprawling tendencies – almost as if they got some of the more ambitious ideas out of their system with Physical Graffiti, or simply wanted to get out there and kick some ass – a back to basics move, and one that sees some tremendous guitar work from Jimmy Page! The album still has some longer songs and complicated changes – this is Led Zeppelin, after all – and the lack of over-played classic rock radio fodder actually makes this one a better listen nowadays than the more iconic albums. Includes "Achilles Last Stand", "For Your Life", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", "Candy Store Rock", "Hots On For Nowhere", and "Tea For One". LP, Vinyl record album

Their classic debut was a raw live album – designed to capture their intensity on the Detroit scene of the late 60s – but this set has the group stretching out, and really going for something else – working in the studio for the first time, with surprisingly strong production from a young Jon Landau – and a sense of focus in the songs that shows a great degree of maturity, while still keeping all their pre-punk edges! Wayne Kramer and Fred Sonic Smith are plenty darn fierce on guitar – and the titles alone give a good idea of the energy of the record – and include "Tutti Frutti", "Teenage Lust", "High School", "Shakin Street", "The Human Being Lawnmower", and "Back In The USA". ✨✧ John PrineDiamonds In The Rough ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Fantastic early work from John Prine – exactly the kind of sounds that made him so different from both the 60s generation of folksingers, and most of his hip 70s contemporaries too! In one breath, Prine manages to embrace musical worlds that run from New Orleans up through the Mississippi Delta, into Memphis and Nashville, on up to the Chicago scene in which he made his name – which is where the biting wit and special vision of his sound really comes into focus! Prine was reportedly discovered in a small Chicago club by Kris Kristofferson and Roger Ebert – but from the sound of his well-developed talents here, he hardly needed any big names to point him out – as the man's in very comfortable company of his own, working with Steve Goodman on second guitar and David Bromberg on electric guitar, mandolin, and dobro. Titles include "The Late John Garfield Blues", "The Frying Pan", "Billy The Bum", "Clocks & Spoons", "The Great Compromise", "Take The Star Out Of The Window", and "Yes I Guess They Oughta Name A Drink After You". John PrinePrime Prine – Best Of John Prine (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Atlantic/Rhino, 1976. New Copy ... $21.99
The compilation that capped off a younger John Prine's early years at Atlantic Records – and if it might have come off as a bit prematurely titled at at time given the treasure trove of "best of" level material Prine would record for decades to come, there's no question after all these years ther is plenty of genuinely prime Prine songs here! John's Atlantic albums still stand as some of the finest folk rock ever put out by the label, hislyrics and vocals that distinctive mix of wit and grit, Arif Mardin's production smart enough to keep things spare and intimate when necessary, and to bring in some lusher touches at times. Includes "Sam Stone", "Saddle In The Rain", "Pease Don't Bury Me", "Grandpa Was A Carpenter", "Donald & Lydia", "Illegal Smile", "Sweet Revenge", "Souvenirs", "Come Back To Us Barbara Lewis Hare Krishna Beauregard" and "Hello In There". RascalsFreedom Suite ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $1.99
A double-length set from The Rascals – possibly their most stretched-out exploration of ideas, at least during their initial run for Atlantic Records! The 2LP set features a fair bit of shorter, catchier tunes on the first record – many with some righteous soul overtones – but on the second record, the group really open up – hitting some longer jamming tunes on side three, and moving into a 15 minute instrumental on side four! Vocals are great from all three singers – Gene Cornish, Eddie Brigati, and Felix Cavaliere – and the rhythms are rock-solid too, often augmented with a bit of Atlantic-styled backings by Arif Mardin, to further enforce the soulfulness of the set. Titles include the hit "People Got To Be Free", plus "American The Beautiful", "Any Dance'll Do", "A Ray Of Hope", "Look Around", "Boom", "Heaven", "Cute", "Baby I'm Blue", and "Adrian's Birthday". RascalsSee/Search & Nearness ... CD
Atlantic/BGO (UK), 1969/1971. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.99
A pair of records that really show the evolution of The Rascals – back to back in a single set! See is harder rocking and almost deeper soul than before for the group – and a tremendous evolution in the music of The Rascals – light years past the pop hits of a few years before! The group co-produced the album with Arif Mardin, and the sounds here are even more sophisticated than their Once Upon A Dream album – in modes that are sometimes rootsy rock, sometimes looser jamming, all woven together with the complexity of some of the hipper groups recording for Columbia Records at the time. The vocals are even more confident than before – as are some of the tunes in the set – and titles include "See", "I'd Like To Take You Home", "Remember Me", "Real Thing", "Away Away", "Carry Me Back", "Nubia", and "Temptation's Bout To Get Me". Search & Nothingness is the Rascals' last album for Atlantic Records – and a set that has the combo relying more than ever on the talents of organist Felix Cavaliere! There's a great New York blend of rock and soul going on in the set – a confident, soaring sort of approach to the tunes that's past caring what any simple genre conventions might mean, or which tracks might end up on radio – even though most of the tunes here are still plenty darn catchy. The piano and organ lines on the album snap along nicely, as do some of the drums (especially on the break cut "You Don't Know") – and although group member Eddie Brigati had left by the time the album was released, he still sings lead on a few tracks. Titles include the jazzy "Nama", which is a wonderful surprise – plus "You Don't Know", "Right On", "Ready For Love", "Fortunes", "Glory Glory", and "The Letter". CD

Classic! Fragile is the one that catapulted Yes to unlikely stardom, and in so doing, it brought adventurous, proggy rock to mainstream audience – pretty much changing the face of rock for at least a decade to come! Rick Wakeman's arrival and his spacier electronic keyboards have a lot to do with the Yes ascension, but beyond that that, the songs mix of anthemic, stadium-ready immenseness and trippier, oddball touches makes it a win for both pop/rock fans and prog lovers – win-win! Possibly the biggest album ever by The Rascals – a wonderfully tight batch of tunes that has the group hitting perfectly on all their best fronts! Blue eyed soul mixes wonderfully with some rougher garage-styled rock – and the execution here is perfect enough to please listeners on both sides of the fence. Perhaps most noteworthy is the presence of Arif Mardin arrangements on some of the album's key tracks – a factor that really helps the group find their groove, and sparkle even more brilliantly than before. Atlantic, 1976. Used ... $11.99
We have never been sure if this comp was to be derided for not including some more interesting punk bands from the lower east side, or if all the really great ones already had contracts with other labels anyway. Besides, now that the venerable punk landmark is long gone, this early document provides an interesting perspective on a remarkable time. The music here runs the gamut from seminal new wave, to pretty dumb bar rock, but there's more than a few nuggets of great 70s guitar swagger too. 8 groups in all, with 16 tracks, including "Head Over Heels", "Slash" and "All For The Love Of Rock And Roll" by the Tuff Darts, "Operetico", "AVM" and "Poe" by the Shirts, "Cadillac Moon", "Change It Comes" and "Let Me Dream If I Want To" by Mink Deville, "Over, Under, Sideways, Down" and "I'm Rellay Not this Way" by Manster, "We Deliver" by the Miamis, "I Need A Million" and "It Feels Alright Tonight" by the Laughing Dogs, "Romance" by Sun, and "Everybody's Depraved" by Stuart's Hammer. One of the stranger albums on Atlantic at the start of the 70s – but a surprising hit as well! The group are a batch of Philly studio players who serve up instrumental versions of late 60s rock numbers, plus some of their own bits – all recording at the Sigma Sound studios, with arrangements from Richard Rome and Tom Sellers! It's our guess that some of the players are names we'd recognize from later 70s Philly soul – but here, they're working in a unique space that's partly fuzz instrumental, partly a bit more sensitive too – renditions that go way past the usual "let's remake the hits" style of other records, thanks to the arrangements. Deram/Esoteric (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $14.99
A fantastic album from this legendary British group – a bluesy rock combo who grew up in the same space as Fleetwood Mac and Savoy Brown, but who never fully got their due on this side of the Atlantic! The group here is a unique lineup that only recorded this one album – a trio with John Glascock on bass and Paul Hancox on drums – two players who give leader Stan Webb plenty of space in the spotlight, which means a very strong emphasis on his mindblowing work on guitar! Webb's a musician with the chops of contemporaries Eric Clapton and Peter Green, and you can definitely hear that here – and, like his contemporaries, Stan is also really taking the music way past its bluesy inspirations – using the trio to maybe bring in more of a hard rock vibe, yet never going too far in that direction either. Titles include "Daughter Of The Hillside", "Crying Won't Help You Now", "The Loser", "Telling Your Fortune", and "Poor Boy". A great little group, and one that we only know from this one early 70s album on Atlantic – an unusual set that's kind of a mix of rootsy modes with more baroque elements – often with strongly harmonized vocals, ala America – but a very different sound overall! The production is great – full and rich, but never commercial or slick – just the right balance of vocals, guitars, and all the subtle elements that shift in and out of the mix – all with a quality that makes us wonder why these guys never went on to much bigger fame, and a longer string of records. Bobby DarinBobby Darin Born Walden Robert Cassotto ... LP
Direction, 1968. Sealed Gatefold ... $19.99
An incredible late album from Bobby Darin – and a real treasure! The record was cut after Darin's mid 60s fascination with the work of Tim Hardin, most of which he re-recorded for Atlantic during that time – but it's got a similar style to the Hardin years, yet features some stunning original compositions by Darin. After the confidence of his early show days, it's amazing to hear Bobby D singing songs like this – filled with sadness, insecurity, and kind of a mind-numbing inability to cope with the times. Of course, part of this has to do with Darin's increasingly poor health conditions (he was predicted to live a very short life at an early age) – and the raw honest experimental quality of the album's a real testament to Darin's perpetual struggle to combine a strong professional bent to be a crossover entertainer with an increasing (and surprising) desire to emerge as a creative force on his own. Includes the sublime "I Can See The Wind", plus "Change", "Sunday", "Questions", and "The Proper Gander". (Vocalists, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Transatlantic/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $13.99
A pair of early albums from the great Gordon Giltrap – both released by Transatlantic Records when Gordon was a very young fellow! The self-titled Gordon Giltrap is a gem from 1968 – a record that has Gordon stepping out as a hell of a guitarist, and a very dark-tinged songwriter – certainly of the generation that was budding with John Renbourn and Bert Jansch – but with a distinct quality that really set Giltrap apart from the rest, maybe making him as much of an individualist as Davy Graham! Although just 18, Giltrap's acoustic guitar work is fantastic– and his vocals are much more biting than some of his contemporaries – almost mean at times. Titles include "Window Pattern", "Blythe Hill", "Won't You Stay Awhile Suzanne", "Don't You Feel Good", "Birth Of Spring", "Don't You Hear Your Mother's Voice", and "Ives Horizon". Portrait is an amazing record – at one level filled with mastery of the 12 string guitar has has Gordon Giltrap matching the best of the Takoma generation in the US – but also graced with vocals that are very distinct, very pointed, and which make the tunes with lyrics such a contrast to the instrumentals! The whole thing is fantastic – a true testament to the legend that has grown up around Giltrap over the years – with titles that include "Thoughts In The Rain", "Never Ending Solitude", "Young Love", "Lucifer's Cage", "Portrait", "Tuxedo", and "Hands Of Fate". Atco, 1969. Very Good ... $29.99
A psychedelic gem recorded at Gold Star Studios at the end of the 60s – one that brings a fair bit of British influences into play with the trippier sounds of the American underground of the time! This Atlantic debut by the group shows a tremendous amount of promise – and an approach to the music that sometimes takes on loftier ambitions through its use of bit of brass and reeds amidst the core keyboards, guitar, bass, and drums of the tunes. The songs are tight and sharp, but have some nice flourishes too – almost in the later Chad & Jeremy mode, with a real "British through LA" sort of sound. Titles include "RCMPB", "Don't", "Have You Ever", "To Be", "Sunrise #7", "Sparkle", and "Just Try". LP, Vinyl record album
