Question Mark & The MysteriansAction ... LP
Cameo/Abkco, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 25.99
The second album from Question Mark & The Mysterians – even more obscure than the first, and harder and heavier too! There's an energy and brashness here that's undeniable – like the group have really gotten their isht together – and found a way to push past the simple melodic groove of their debut! All the best elements from that set are still in place – the cool organ, Question Mark's almost-conversational vocals – and the garagey production that makes the guitars sound great. But there's also a focus that comes through strongly – like the combo were really finding the right way to interact – no doubt after a string of club performances on the strength of their singles! Titles include a long take on "Shout", plus "Do You Feel It", "Smokes", "Hangin On A String", "Got To", "I'll Be Back", and "Girl". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Rolling Stones & OthersRolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus ... CD
Abkco, 1968. Used ... $4.99
A great audio documentary of a really mindblowing film – one that captures the Rolling Stones at that key late 60s point when they were stepping into really sinister territory – playing in a very vivid setting, along with some of their key up-and-coming contemporaries on the scene! The whole thing builds up with the energy of a circus – the Stones are last, and there's a growing mix of performers introduced by various members of the band – really presented in a carnivalesque array, before the lead act comes in and knocks it out of the park. The set features a killer early version of "A Quick One While He's Away" by The Who – maybe one of the high points of the set – plus "Song For Jeffrey" by Jethro Tull, Whole Lotta Yoko" by Yoko Ono & The Dirty Mac (John Lennon), "Ain't That A Lot Of Love" by Taj Mahal, and "Something Better" by Marianne Faithfull. The Rolling Stones round things out with performances of "Sympathy For The Devil", "Parachute Woman", "Jumpin Jack Flash", "Salt Of The Earth", "No Expectations", and "You Can't Always Get What You Want". CD

Rolling Stones/Neptunes/Fatboy SlimSympathy For The Devil Remix CD Single (SACD pressing) ... CD
Abkco, 2003. Used ... $9.99
The Stones may be old, but they ain't dumb! Mick & co. must have noticed the huge shot of artistic credibility Justin Timberlake received after the Neptunes hopped aboard, which is something the Stones haven't had in a couple of decades. The 'Tunes do a pretty great re-imagined take on the classic rock staple – adding some sitar and Eastern string touches on top of their patented minimal claps, snaps, and thumps. On top of the full length Neptunes mix and an edit you get Fatboy Slim's mix, also in epic form plus radio edit. Cook's is a fine, bubble gum club mix with a Happy Mondays kind of vibe. The Full Phat mix strays the most from the original, keeping Mick's vocal and the whoo-whoos, but completely strips the band and adds all electronic beats. The original version is here for you kids who didn't realize there was one! CD
(Hybrid SACD pressing with the original lenticular insert!)

A landmark live set from the Rolling Stones – featuring material from their smoking tour of 1969! A very cool early EP from The Animals – the group's second in this format, and never originally issued in the US! The group are at their young, gritty best here – with lots of bluesy currents in the music, thanks to Alan Price on Hammond – topped with soulful vocals from the mighty Eric Burdon, who never fails to blow us away. Titles include the great "I'm Mad Again", plus "Bury My Body", "She Said Yeah", and "I'm In Love". 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Marianne FaithfullCome & Stay With Me – The UK 45s 1964 to 1969 ... CD
Decca/Abkco, Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wealth of wonderful work from Marianne Faithfull, all pulled from those key early years when she was part of the musical world of Andrew Loog Oldham and the Rolling Stones! Yet right from the start, despite the fact that she sang a few Stones songs on her own (and wrote a few for the group, too) – Marianne was always very much her own singer, and had a way with a song that was quite different than most of the other UK girl pop artists of the time too! Faithfull sometimes has a trill, and always has a sense of darkness on these singles – almost in the territory of the young Nico, but more tuneful and less moody – and superbly set up in just the right sort of arrangements by Mike Leander, David Whitaker, and even the great Jack Nitzsche. CD features all the a and b-sides of these early singles, plus a huge amount of notes – and 22 tracks that include "Morning Sun", "Sister Morphine", "As Tears Go By", "Summer Nights", "The Sha La La Song", "Something Better", "I'd Like To Dial Your Number", "Counting", "That's Right Baby", "Tomorrow's Calling", "This Little Bird", "What Have I Done Wrong", and "Go Away From My World". ✨✧ VariousPhil Spector – Back To Mono 1958 to 1969 (4CD set) ... CD
Abkco, Late 50s/1960s. Used 4 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The classic box set featuring so many of the biggest, best, and brightest pop, rock & soul singles of the late 50s and on through the 60s – those ubiquitous, but no less incredible productions from that crazy genius Phil Spector! Back To Mono features many of the best known numbers by the Ronettes, the Righteous Brothers, Darlene Love, the Checkmates, the Crystals and many more – all of it with the appropriately dubbed Wall Of Sound that made Phil Spector the most famous producer of all time! We'd love to see an addendum someday featuring a set of Spector's productions for those idiosyncratic superstars of the 70s (the Ramones, Leonard Cohen, the post-Beatles) – but as a snapshot of an era, this box can hardly be beaten! 60 tracks on the the main 3CDs in the set – plus a 4th CD featuring the classic Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector album from 1963! Titles include "To Know Him Is To Love Him" by the Teddy Bears, "Spanish Harlem" by Ben E King, "I Love How You Love Me" by Paris Sisters, "He's A Rebel" by the Crystals, "(Today I Met) The Boy I'm Going To Marry" by Darlene Love, "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes, "Hold Me Tight" by the Treasures, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" by the Righteous Brothers, "River Deep Mountain High" by Ike & Tina, "Love Is All I Have To Give" by Checkmates and tons more – plus the immortal holiday disc featuring the Ronettes, Bob B Soxx & The Blue Jeans, Crystals, Darlene Love and more! All that, and a thick, nearly 100 page booklet! CD
(Out of print, includes book and "Back To Mono" button too! Outer box has some edgewear and booklets have some light age spots but set is in overall good condition.)

✨✧ Rolling StonesAftermath (gold SACD pressing) ... CD
Abkco, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
A record that's a real step forward for The Rolling Stones – a set that really marks the emergence of the Jagger/Richards team as a songwriting powerhouse for the 60s – and which has the group moving past bluesy roots into some nicely trippier territory at times! Everything from the previous years is still nicely intact – but the band are definitely on the way towards that Stones sound that made them very distinct from other blues-inspired UK acts of their generation – heard here in a mix of classic singles and overlooked LP tracks that include "Paint It Black", "Stupid Girl", "Lady Jane", "Under My Thumb", "Flight 505", "High & Dry", and "Going Home". BBC/Abkco, Mid 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A massive discovery of material from the early Rolling Stones – beautifully-recorded performances that were originally done for the BBC – served up here in a double-length set that adds a huge amount of sounds to the start of their catalog! The tracks here date from 1963 to 1965, and really show the group evolving in the space of just a few short years – playing their own music, and great soul and blues numbers too – on shows that include Saturday Club, Blues In Rhythm, Yeah Yeah, and Top Gear. Titles include "Mona", "You Better Move On", "Satisfaction", "Come On", "Cops & Robbers", "The Spider & The Fly", "Roll Over Beethoven", "Cry To Me", "Mercy Mercy", "Around & Around", "Fannie Mae", "You Better Move On", "Route 66", "It's All Over Now", and "The Last Time". Also includes great bonus tracks – "Little By Little", "Ain't That Loving You Baby", "Beautiful Delilah", "Crackin Up", "I Just Want To Make Love To You", "Carol", "If You Need Me", "Confessin The Blues", and "2120 South Michigan Ave". ✨✧ Rolling StonesTheir Satanic Majesties Request (gold SACD pressing) ... CD
London/Abkco, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
A record that was initially thought by some as a cheap cash-in on the Sgt Peppers concept – but an album that, to us, really helped set The Rolling Stones free to express themselves in so many new and amazing ways! There's definitely a bit of the hippie vibe to the set at times – such as sitar that might have been unimaginable on a Stones track a few years before – but there's also an explosively creative approach to the album's arrangements and production, creating a kaleidoscope of sounds that only further seems to illuminate the Jagger and Richards genius! Titles include the classic "She's A Rainbow" – plus "Citadel", "2000 Man", "On With The Show", "Sing All This Together", "In Another Land", "The Lantern", and "Gomper". CD

A record that has The Animals at the crossroads – working without the piano and organ of Alan Price, but with an even more rising sense of power from Eric Burdon – who's really coming into his own as a singer, and turning out to be a surprisingly great songwriter too! The group still bring in tunes that are from some of their blues and R&B inspirations – but Burdon's phrasing is very personal, and really transforms the material and makes it work wonderfully with the original tunes – on titles that include "Cheating", "She'll Return It", "See See Rider", "Inside Looking Out", "Gin House Blues", "What Am I Living For", "I Put A Spell On You", "Don't Bring Me Down", and "One Monkey Won't Stop The Show". The set's hardly a hodge podge, though – as it was a crucial second full length for the US, and a collection of cuts that really cemented the group's reputation at the time – thanks to the strength of cuts that include "Mess Around", "I Believe To My Soul", "Ain't Got You", "Dimples", "She Said Yeah", "I'm Crying", "Boom Boom", "How You've Changed", and "Let The Good Times Roll". Cameo/Abkco, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A great set of groovers from the Cameo/Parkway label – a company that gave the world the biggest twist record of the 60s, but which also was perfectly poised to deliver all sorts of other upbeat tracks as well! The label was in Philly – a huge dance town in the early days of soul and rock – and the set list here is filled with the kind of cuts that were Philadelphia's answer to the rising sound of Motown – the roots of the Northern Soul sound that would be followed by soul collectors for decades! These aren't novelty hits, but upbeat cuts that groove plenty – most by soul artists, a few by pop singers – but all given the kind of tight instrumentation and strong studio handling that made the Philly scene such a standout. 22 tracks in all – including "Shimmy Shimmy" and "The Wah Watusi" by The Orlons, "Bristol Stomp" and "You Can't Sit Down" by the Dovells, "Mashed Potato Time" and "Do The Bird" by Dee Dee Sharp, "The 81" by Candy & The Kisses, "The Mash" by Tony Young & The Hippies, "Mexican Hat Rock" by The Applejacks, "Baby Do The Frog" by The Dardenelles, "The Swim (part 1)" by The Marlins, "Slow Twistin" by Chubby Checker & Dee Dee Sharp, "The Third House" by Bobby Rydell, "When You Dance" by The Turbans, "Everybody South Street" by The Taffys, "The Popeye Waddle" by Don Covay, and yes, "The Twist" by Chubby Checker.
