Boo & The Tru TonesShow The World ... LP
WIRL/Not Dead Yet (Canada), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 26.99 About April 20, 2024 (delayed)
A very cool set from the 70s – one that's part reggae, part sweet soul, and part funky jam – all served up with a nicely mixed up vibe that really makes the whole thing shine! The group hail from Barbados, and there's some great Caribbean funk on the record at times – especially on the instrumental moments, which have qualities that echo American funky 45s, but with a nice twist on the styles! The sweet soul vocals are great too – not heard often, but a nice feature when they appear – as is some of the more unusual organ and guitar expressions over reggae styled rhythms. A great record, with a strong sense of depth and variety – on titles that include "What A Life", "Don't Blame This Joint", "Sella", "Stop Leaning On The Shoulder Of Your Brother", "Let Me Get Stoned", "You're The Match", "I Just Can't Reach You", and a remake of "The World Is A Ghetto". ✨✧ Jimmy CliffFollow My Mind ... LP
Reprise, 1975. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Warmly-crafted work from Jimmy Cliff – a mid 70s set that has the singer emerging way past the Kingston scene, to a role where he feels much more like a global soul superstar overall! Make no mistake, there's definitely plenty of reggae on the album – but the record also marks that moment when the music was really reaching out to much bigger audiences, thanks to talents as great as Jimmy – able to take the best well-crafted grooves of Jamaica, mix them with a bit of Cali sunshine, and come up with cuts that sparkle here – like "I'm Gonna Live I'm Gonna Love", "Who Feels It, Knows It", "Remake The World", "Hypocrites", "Wahjahka Man", "The News", "Look At The Mountains", "You're The Only One", and the seminal "No Woman No Cry". LP, Vinyl record album
(Tan label stereo pressing. Cover has some ring and edge wear.)

✨✧ Desmond DekkerDesmond Dekker – Essential Artist Collection (purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Trojan, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
The soulful vocals of Desmond Dekker were some of the first from the Jamaican scene to let the rest of the world know that something magical was really taking place – and although the man himself is remembered for a few key singles back in the day, Desmond cut a heck of a lot of wonderful work – lots of which you'll find in this overstuffed set! The package brings together top-shelf tracks that certainly mark Dekker as one of the essentials of Trojan Records – much of it with his key group The Aces, and more with The Cherry Pies – plus later solo tracks too – all running strongly through the best modes of the ska, rocksteady, and early reggae generations. 2LP set features 28 tracks in all – and titles include "Intensified 68", "Jamaica Ska", Mother Pepper", "Wise Man", "Problem", "Rude Boy Train", "007", "Rudy Got Soul", "Unity", "You Can Get It If You Really Want", "Licking Stick", "Young Generation", "Get Up Adina", "Generosity", "Pretty Africa", "It Mek", "Israelites", and "Fu Man Chu". ✨✧ Alton EllisMr Soul Of Jamaica ... LP
Treasure Isle, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mr Soul is right – as Alton Ellis was one of the greatest Jamaican singers of his generation, and an artist who was able to bring a deeper sense of soul than most! The music's got this laidback rocksteady vibe that really lets Ellis soar – with backings by Tommy McCook & The Supersonics, and some harmonies behind his lead that really knock things out of the park! The album brings together cuts that were recorded over the space of a number of years in the late 60s, showing a nice evolution of both Ellis and the scene – and titles include "Breaking Up", "I Can't Stop Now", "Baby I Love You", "If I Could Rule The World", and "What Does It Take". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label with black logo and text – in cover with purple and yellow. Cover has some light wear, but this is a nice clean copy. Matrix Alton Ellis A/B.)

EthiopiansEngine 54 (180 gram gold vinyl pressing) ... LP
Trojan/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
A rocksteady classic from The Ethiopians – but a set that also has plenty more going on as well! The duo work here as a Jamaican counterpart to American soul groups – one of the first and best to hit the Kingston scene – but they also open themselves up to lots of other ideas in the process, and sometimes lay back vocally to just let the album open up and groove! Harmonies are The Ethiopians' strongest calling card – but they're often first directed by the rhythms, then slide in to warm things up and give a larger presence to the slow-stepping, midtempo grooves – all delivered with a classic Kingston head-nodding approach. The album's a key genre-building moment in Jamaican music – and titles include the classic "Train To Skaville", plus "Engine 54", "My Love", "You Got The Dough", "Woman's World", "Long Time Now", and "Unchanged Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Numbered limited edition of 750 copies – on gold vinyl!)

Derrick Harriott & OthersDerrick Harriott – Reggae, Funk, & Soul 1969 To 1975 ... LP
Dub Store (Japan), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $27.99 32.99
The title certainly gets it right – as Derrick Harriott serves up a wonderful mix of sounds that owes plenty to American funk and soul of the early 70s – some cool Kingston covers of famous US tunes, and some other originals that are equally groovy overall! The set's one of the best that we've ever heard from the Dub Store label – and almost has a Soul Jazz level of track selection – really wonderful work that either features Derrick in the lead, or working with some hip contemporaries, in a groove that's totally great – neither straight reggae, but also quite far from more familiar funk and soul too. Titles include "Black Moses" by The Preacher, "Tougher Than Tough" by I Roy, "Brown Baby" by Derrick Harriott, "Hell Below" by Crystal Generation, "Going Back Home" by The Chosen Few, "Psychedelic Train" by Derrick Harriott, "Slippery" by Karl Bryan & The Crystalites, "Home Sweet Home" by Bongo Herman & Les, "Rescue The Children" by Junior Murvin, "Phoenix" by Noel Brown, "People Make The World Go Round" by The Chosen Few, and "Message From A Black Man" by Derrick Harriott. InvestigatorsInvestigators Greatest Hits – The Rare Grooves ... LP
Freestyle (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $23.99 28.99
Crucial cuts from The Investigators – a UK lovers rock group, but one who borrow plenty from American soul as well – as you might guess from their look on the cover, which almost makes them appear like some east coast indie act from the early 80s! The rhythms are definitely reggae on most tracks, but they're blended with a warmer modern soul style too – easygoing, in true lovers rock style – and given some great vocals from lead singers Michael Gordon and Lorenzo Hall. Titles include remakes of "Close To You" and "How Could I Let You Get Away" – plus originals "Run Away Child", "Marley's Gone", "Baby I Am Yours", "Turn Out The Light", "Living In A World Of Magic", and "Woman I Need Your Loving". ✨✧ Third WorldJourney To Addis ... LP
Island, 1978. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
It may be commercial reggae, but the strength of the group's version of "Now That We Found Love" really pushed them over the top! That track's the real winner here – a smooth modern soul number with just a slight hint of Kingston, grooving away in a crossover style that we still really dig. Other tracks include "Journey To Addis", "One Cold Vibe", "Cold Sweat", and "African Woman". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label pressing, in fantastic shape, with inner sleeve and promo stamp.)

Carroll ThompsonCarroll Thompson (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Doctor Bird (UK), 1982. New Copy ... $14.99 17.99
A wonderful set from Carroll Thompson, one that easily slides back and forth between easy rocking lover's numbers on the reggae front, and polished 80s commercial soul. The set was originally issued on the SG imprint, and fell unfairly into obscurity almost immediately, perhaps because Carroll didn't neatly fit into either the then-burgeoning UK soul scene or London's reggae happenings, which leaned more towards the rootsier side of the spectrum. But whatever vein she was mining, her sophisticated approach shines brightly in both her own production and arrangements, and her sweetly grooving vocals. A young Cleveland Watkiss makes a supporting appearance, as does heavyweight Kingston key-man Jackie Mittoo, but it's Thompson that's the real star here! There's 9 numbers on the original album, including "Word Of Love", "A Happy Song", "Change", "Stay With Me Tonight", "Music (It Will Never Die)", "Just A Little Bit", "Hoping On Love", "Dreams Of You" and "Your Love". 8 bonus tracks, too – including single mixes of Make It With You", "Honis I Do", "People Of The World", "Earth Man" and more. Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Excellent! You're probably familiar with the Aquarius Dub set, an early, early dub LP, featuring some great rockers from Herman Chin Loy and Augustus Pablo – this groovy set from Pressure Sounds collects many of the vocal, dee jay and instrumental tracks that those rhythms laid the base for! 2 dozen bouncing numbers from the Scorpio and Aquarius imprints, with Chin Loy's rippling offbeat approach to production and top flight chats, scats and voicing from some of Kingston's finest, including Augustus Pablo & Herman "Aquarius Rock" and "Iggy Iggy", 2 versions of Alton Ellis' "Alton's Official Daughter", The Aquarians "Funky Aquarius", Sounds Unlimited "Roadrunner" and "Middle East Skank", Archie McKay "Pick Up The Pieces", Leroy Parker "Groove With It", Beres Hammond "No More War" plus its version by Herman, Dennis Alcapone "Return Of Sabata", James Eastwood "Darkest Night", Charlie Boy "Funky Strip", The Teacher "Soul Vibration", Dennis Brown "Song My Mother Used To Sing", Herman "Aquarius Dub", "River Nile Version", "Sabata" and "I Man" and Augustus Pablo "The Red Sea", "Snowball & Pudding", "Song Of The East" and "East Of The River Nile". ✨✧ VariousNiney The Observer Presents Jah Fire – The Observer 7" Singles Collection 1976/1977 ... CD
Doctor Bird (UK), Mid 1970s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stunning amount of music recorded in just the space of two short years – all standing as a mighty strong testament to the production genius of Niney The Observer during the roots reggae generation! The package features a fair bit of tracks that have never been on CD before, and as stated, includes a host of rare 7" singles originally issued on the Observer, Third World, and other labels – sounding far better here than on some crackly, mispressed, or recycled vinyl! The clarity of the package makes both the vocals and subtler elements of production come out strongly, while also giving plenty of grounding to the rhythms and their sweet dubby touches around the edges. The 49 track package is a who's who of hipper reggae singers of the time – with work from Gregory Isaacs, Junior Byles, I Roy, Horace Andy, The Soul Syndicate, Jacob Miller, Big Youth, Leroy Smart, Dillinger, and others – including Niney himself.
